FatherLeroywaslast seenonApril18walkingin thecustodyofPathetLao troops,Fidesreported.The PathetLaoforceshadenteredBan-Pha-Teu,whereFr. Leroyhadhismission,on April15followingseveral daysoffightingintheneighbourhood. AccordingtoFides,Ow priest'sdisappearanceand murderfollowedthischain ofevents.

OnApril18,followingthe offeringofhisusualmorningMass,thepriestwasorderedoutofhischapelby PathetLaotroopsatwhich timeheandhishousewere searched.

Ashorttimelaterthat morningthepriestwasorderedtoleavehismission inthecompanyofahalfdozensoldiers.Hewasseen walkinginfrontofthesoldiers,barefootedandbareheaded,dressedinhiscassockwithacrucifixandbreviary.

Hetoldoneofthevillagers thathewasgoingtoseethe PathetLaocommandantwho hadaskedforhim. Laterthatdayalarge contingentofsoldiersreturnedtothehousewiththe priest'skey,wheretheypillagedtherooms-taking money,letter:,records,medicinesandsomeBlms.

Fromthehousethesoldierswenttothechapel wheretheytookamissal andsomealtarornaments. Theyaskedthatthetabernaclebeopened,butdidnot insistwhenthoseinthe chapelrefused.

Laterthateveningwhen thesoldiershadleftthe grounds,ayoungwoman wenttothechapelandcon-

sumedtheSacredHostsin ordertopreventprofanation.

At8o'clockthatevening thetroopsorderedthevillagerstoassemblewhere theyweretoldthatalthough thepriesthadnotbeenkilled,hewasatraitoranda spyandwouldbereplaced byabetterpriestlater. Severaldayslaterthemissionwasagainsearched,and thereligiousarticlesinthe chapelwerecompletelydestroyed.

OnthedayFatherLeroy wastakenprisoner,awoman ofthevillageBan-Pha-Teu sawthepriestsurroundedby soldiersinaricefield.A shorttimelatersheheard shotsinthisareaandconcludedthepriesthadbeen killed.

Laterseveralwomencollectingfirewoodinthisarea werechasedawaybythe soldiers.Thefollowingday, whenthesoldiershadgone, afreshgravewasdiscovered.

Becauseofthefearofdiscovery,itwasnotuntilthe beginningofMaythatthe gravewasinvestigated.A womanfromthevillage openedthegraveandfound whatshebelievedtobethe bodyoftheFrenchmissioner.

ThestatementsmadebysomesourcesofMoralReArmamentthatithasthebackingoftheChurchare ratherconfoundedbyastatementmadebyCardinal Pizzardo,oftheSacredCongregationoftheHolyOffice. TheHolyOffice,amongotherduties,guardsCatholicdoctrineinfaithandmorals,judgesheresyandthose suspectedofit.Thestatementreads:

"TheSacredCongregationisastonishedtoseeCatholicsandevenpriestsseekcertainmoralandsocial objectives,howeverpraiseworthytheymaybe,inthe bosomofamovementwhichpossessesneitherthe patsimonyofdoctrineorofspirituallife,northesupernaturalmeansofgratewhichtheCatholicChurchhas. Itisevenmoreastonishingtoseecertainpeoplehavean exaggeratedenthusiasm,whichapparentlymakesthem believethatthemethodsandmeansdevelopedbyMoral Re-Armamentaremoreefficaciousinthismovement thanintheCatholicChurchitself.Thedange,rofsyncretism(compromisesofreligiousprinciple)andof religiousindifference,ofwhichwarningshavebeen givenonMoralRe-Armament,cannolongerbeignored."

TheBishopofMarquette,intheUnitedStates,Most Rev.T.Noa,inwhosediocesetheU.S.headquartersof M.R.A.issituated,issuedapastoralletterwhichhas beendescribedasamasterlydocumentofferingadetailedandconvincingbackgroundforthefollowing forthrightdirective,whichisgiveninthepastoral: "UntilHolyMotherChurchshoulddeclarethatno dangertotheFaithofCatholicsistobefoundinthe movement,thepresentPastoralInstructionconcludes withthefollowingdirective:CatholicsoftheDioceseof MarquetteandallotherCatholics,whenevertheymay bewithinthelimitsofthe_jurisdictionoftheDioceseof Marquette,maynotattendthemeetingsofM.B.A.,or participateinorpromoteitsactivities."

negativeapproachtolifehadnotgivenhimpeace. ThiswasexactlytheproblemofPaul,who,asfaras lawwasconcerned,calledhimself"blameless."Earlier inHispubliclife,OurLordhadtakenaccountofthis yearninginsideofmenforbettermentwhenHesaid: "Blessedaretheywhohungerandthirstafterrighteousness."

TheLordwaspleasedwiththeyoungmanforthe GospelrecordsthatHelovedhim-whichisalwaysthe casewhenHemeetsanunsulliedyoungneaq.Now comesthetest,whichresultsinoneofthesaddest storiesofhistory.OurLordsaidtohim:"Ifthouhast amindtobeperfect,gohomeandsellallthatbelongs tothee,giveittothepoor,andsothetreasurethou hastshallbeinheaven;thencomebackandfollowMe." Thereweremanycommandments,buttherewasonly onethingnecessaryiftheyoungwastoprovehewas reallyinearnest.Evidently,theyoungman,whowas alreadydescribedasrich,hadmadeanidolofhis riches.Hehadevidentlythoughtmoreaboutdoing goodthanbeinggood.Thisyoungmanwantedtodo greatthings,butherecoiledfromthetestabouthow attachedhewastowealth.

Itwasnottobethoughtthatthiswasauniversal commandmentthatOurLordgavetheyouth.Itwasa counseldirectedtohim,notapreceptforeveryone. Theyouthwasattachedtosomethingwhichtiedhim totheearth.Butifhewastobeperfect,thenhehadto openhishandsandcastoutthetreasures,andhisheart hadtobesweptcleanoflesserloves.Whentheballast isthrowndown,theballoonshootsup.Heaskedwhat helacked,andwhenhewastoldthathehadnolack ofthematerial,butalackofthespiritual,theyoung mancooledoffinhisenthusiasm.

Intheearlierpartofthestory,hecamerunningto OurLord,butnowthestoryhasasadending.Wealth hadgivenhimafalsesenseofstability.Hewastold thathewasbuildinghislifeonsand.Thesadending follows:"Whenheheardthis,theyoungmanwent away,sadatheart,forhehadgreatpossessions."He wasneverbroughtsosharplytotheforkintheroad, butnowthetworoadsarebeforehimandhechooses theworse.

Theonethingneededforcompleteinnerpeaceis self-surrender.Inthecaseofthisyouthithappenedto havebeenwealth.Hemightnothavebeentemptedas otheryoungmenweretempted,butthekindoftemptationdoesnotmatter.Thereisasecretgardeninevery heartwhichtreasuresupsomethingwhichitwantsto keepforitself.Itmaynotbeevilasthiswealthofthe youngmanwasnotevil.Butitpreventssoaring;it standsinthewayofperfectlove.AsLeonBloyonce wrote:"Onestepbeyondmediocrityandwearesaved." Theheightofgoodnessandreachesofspiritualhappinessareattainednotbysubmissiontoaminimumof precepts,butalovewhichscuttleseverythingfromthe shipof.selfforthesakeofLove.AsDantesaidofhim: "Hemadethrovghcowardicethegreatrefusal."He .waswillingtoaskadvice,butnottofollowit.As Chestertonhassaid:"Christianityhasnotbeentried andfoundwanting:ithasbeenfoundhard,butnever tried."

COMMUNISTBADFAITHinLaosand WesternweaknessinGenevaaremakingthe skiesdarkeroverSouth-EastAsia.People inguerrilla-plaguedSouthernVietnamsee thethreatfromLaosbecomingdailymore definite.

FROMMOSCOWTOHANOITOXIENGKHOUANG THISBADFAITHHASBEENGLARINGLYIN EVIDENCE.

TheRussiansdelayedforlongweeksbeforeagreeing withtheBritishonthetextofamessagecallingfora cease-EreinLaos.(TheBritishForeignSecretaryand RussianForeignMiniAterareco-chairmenofthe GenevaconferencethatbroughttheIndo-Chinaarmisticein1954.)WhiletheRussianswerestalling,their communistalliesinLaoswerewaginggaraggressively, withtheartilleryandmunitionssuppliedbythe Russianairlift.

Atlength,onApril24,thejointmessagewasissued withdiplomaticfanfare.AccordingtoanofficialBritish source,theRussiansexplainedthedelayontheirpart bysayingthattheyhadtocleareverywordwith Peking,HanoiandXiengKhouang.XiengKhouangis theheadquartersofthecommunistPathetLaoandtheir alliesinLaos.

AllthisimpliedthatthecommunistsinLaosand NorthVietnamwerenowwillingtohaveacease-fire. Infact,theykeptonfighting.TheLaotiangovernment declareditsreadinessforanimmediatecease-fire. Owingtocommunistdelay,itdidnottakeplaceuntil May3.

Aboutoneweeklater,however,thecommunists launchedanattackonPadong,heldbyMeosoldiersof thegovernmentarmy.Theykeptuptheattackuntil thedefenders,overwhelmedbyimportedartillery, withdrew.

Thecommunistshavecontinuedtoviolatetheceasefirewithcynicalpersistence.

Meanwhile,theinternationalcommissionhasarrived inLaostosupervisethecarryingoutofthecease-fire. Ithasbeenrenderedlargelyineffectivebycommunist obstruction.

ThecommissionconsistsofIndian,Canadianand Polishrepresentatives,namedbytheirrespectivegovernments.ThePolishmembersare,ofcourse,communists.Theyseektohavearuleofunanimityinthe commission,whichwouldgivethemaveto.

Thepresidentofthecommission,thechiefIndian delegate,hasaskedtheGenevaconferencetoauthorise thecommissiontohaveitsowntransportation.Otherwiseitcannotgowhereandwhenitwishestosupervise andinvestigate.TheRussianswillnotagree.

InVietnamasimilarcommissionhasbeenoperating, feeblyindeed,butstilloperating,since1954.According toacommissionsource,partofitsweaknessisdueto thefactthatitdoesnotpossessitsownmeansoftransportation.

Theevidentanxietyofthecommuniststorestrictand enfeebletheInternationalControlCommissioninLaos hasonlyonemeaning.Theyaretryingtohidesomethig-perhapsmanythings.Theirattitudenowshows alsothattheywillobstructanysimilarcommission thatmaybesetuptoensuretheneutralityofLaos afteraGenevasettlement.

TheWesterngovernmentsseemtohaveretreated fromthepositionthattheyheldsostoutlyintheir statementsofsomemonthsago.

OnApril25,releasingthetextofthejointAngloRussiancease-firemessagetothepressinVientiane,the BritishAmbassadortoLaos,JohnM.Addis,outlined thisposition.Thecorrespondentwaspresent.

"Wehaveactedonthefollowingunderstandingwith theRussians,"theAmbassadorsaid."First,theceasefirstshouldtakeplaceimmediately.Secondly,itshould beverifiedbytheinternationalcommission.Thirdly, theconferencewillnottakeplaceuntiltheco-chairmen aresatisfiedthatthecease-firehasbeeneffective." Headdedthat,ontheBritish..side,therehadbeen "completeagreementateverystagewiththeAmericans."

Obviouslythethreeconditionssetforthsofirmlyby theBritishAmbassadorinVientianeonApril25have notbeenfulfilledinanyrealsense.Iftherewasseemingcompliancewiththesecondandthird,itwassoon provedtobeanillusion.

InregardtoLaos,nearlyeverything,Laotianand Western,militaryanddiplomatic,seemstohaveyielded beforethecommunists.Thereare,doubtless,serious reasonswhyithasyielded.

ButthevitalfactforthemanintheSouth-EastAsian streetisthattheyieldinghashappened.

sectors-nowaself-governingareawhichispoliticallyapartoftheFederal Republic-andtheSoviet sector.ThelatterisconsideredbytheRedsasthe capitaloftheEastGerman DemocraticRepublic.

TheSovietUnionisnow tryingtomakethepresent division,ofGermanywhichhasnotbeenconfined byapeacetreaty-apermanentthing,thusforcing theWesternpowersoutof theirsectorsofthecity.

Bycontrast,thesituation oftheChurchinEastGermanyismarkedbysharp restrictionsandoutright persecution.Publicreligious activitiesofanykindare madedifficultifnotimpossible.CommunistauthoritiesmakeithardforEast GermanCatholicstogoto WestGermanytoattend meetingsorretreatsoreven tovisitrelatives.Bishop-' fromWestGermanyareforbiddentoentertheSoviet zone.

Thisisthereasonwhy teachingmustberegarded asavoationnomatterwhat typeofschoolisconsidered. Theteacherisworkingall thetimewithhumanmaterialandineverysenseis mouldingthefuture,aseach individualisencouragedand assistedtoreachupwards towardsfullmaturity.

MRS.PIEROGRASSELLINI,a48-year-old familyhostilitytobecomeapainterandher caughtthepaintingurgefromhiswife.Their severalshowsinItaly.

Everyonepaintsinthefamilywhichhas beenchosenasthelatestdesignersofVatican stamps.

Mr.andMrs.Grassellini havebeendesigningVatican stampssince1957andhave 17seriestotheircredit. Theirlatestworksarea seriesoffourstantpscommemoratingthe19thcentenaryofSt.Paul'sarrival inRomeandanotherseries honouringthefirst100years oftheVaticanCitydaily, L'OsservatoreRomano.

AsachildMrs.Grassellini lovedtodrawandpaintand wantedtobecomeanartist. However,herfamilytoldher itwasawasteoftime.Insteadtheyinsistedonher learningthegentleartof embroideryasbeingmore suitableandusefulanart forafuturewifeandmother.

Withonlysevendaysto workin,Mrs.Grassellini produced"aseriesofdesigns commemoratingthePontificalAcademyofSciences whichwereacceptedbythe Vaticanofficials.Designers arenotappointedanditis passiblethatmorethanone artistwillbeemployedby theVaticantodesignits stamps.

Sincethensheandher husbandhavecontinuedto designVaticanstamps.Her husbandconcentrateson thosepartsofthedrawings whichcallforarchitectural techniques.

ProbablythegreatestcrisistheGrassellinifamily havefacedwasbroughtabout bythedeathofPopePius XIIin1958.

Aspecialseries,called the"SedeVacante"(Vacant See),hadtobeproduced immediately.Thecouple weregivenordersat5p.m. oneafternoontoproducea suitabledesignby8a.m. thefollowingmorning.

Withonly15hoursattheir

disposal,theyworkedtogetherfrom5,p.m.to10that night.ThenMrs.Grasselliniwenttobedwhileher husbandcontinueduntil3 a.am.whensherelievedhim. At8a.m.'theydelivered thecompleteddesign,perfect ineverydetailandready forprinting.

Normallywhenassigned acommission,Mrs.Grassel-

talianblondefromFlorencehadtoovercome husband,alsoaFlorentine,andanarchitect, 20-year-oldson,Giuliano,hasalreadyhad liniwillsubmitdraftdesigns,usuallymorethanone, tothepostalauthorities. Thefinaldecisionisoften lefttothePope. Whentheywereworking ontheseriescommemorating thecoronationofHisHolinessPopeJohnXXIII.Mrs. Grasselliniattendedpapal audiencesandsketchedthe Popeashetalked.

Nobodythendreamedthat theywouldbecomethe RoyalBallet,secondonlyin theworldtotheBolshoi.

Thesameforward-looking patternexistshere-theuse ofestablishedstarstogain popularsupport(Sadlers WellsusedDolinandMarkova)whilethelocaltalent isbuildingup,thededicated director,theboldstagingof newballetsspeciallywrittenforthecompanyand, mostofall,courageinthe faceofpublicindifference andcontempt. "LesSylphides,"opening theshow,showedsome weaknesses,perhapsthrough nervousness,maybethrough lackofrehearsal.Terri CharlesworthandEdward Millerwereoutstandingly goodandthetwoleadersof thechorus(whichIthought tobeValerieHumannand BeverleyTwyford-Jones) putperfectionintotheir smallparts.

Thegreatestdancingof theeveningcamefromGorhamandPomieintheexcerptsfrom"DonQuixote." TheydancedasCziffraplays Liszt,witheverybrilliant highlightglowingwithcolour.Thiskindofdancing, enthrallingasitis,hasits dangersforwefindourselvesapplaudingtechnique insteadofbeingmovedby thepoetryofthedance.

Asmallgroupintheaudiencebecameaclaque,probablyunwittingly,applaudingeverycleverpieceof dancing,bothhereandin "Aurora'sWedding."Ido hope,forthefutureofthe art,thatballetwillbecome, forsuchpeople,something morethanagymnastdisplay. ExiledBishopbecomes pioneerpriest ArchbishopLacchio, O.F.M.,whowasreleased fromaChineseprisoncamp in1952andexiledfromHis dioceseofChangsha,has builtachurchinthepioneer missionarydistrictofNan kan,Formosa.

Therewerehardlyany Catholicsinthedistrictwhen hewentthere.Thereare nowmorethan10,000.
