WHATISFAITH?Someconceiveitasbelievingthatsomethingwillhappen,suchas"I havefaiththatIwillmakeafortunebeforeIamforty."Othersthinkofitasselfconfidenceandself-assurancebywhichtheymakeGodajuniorpartnerinsomeproject oftheirs:"Ihavefaiththatwillwooandwinthatrichgirl."Thisisnotfaithbutegotism; itisdirectednottoGodbuttoself.

FAITHisrelatednottoself-assurance.buttoGod; nottoanevent.buttotruth.Infact,thereis oftenthegreatestfaithwhenthereistheleast prosperity.SuchwasthecasewithJobwho,fullof soresandsittingonadunghill,said:"IwilltrustHim thoughHeslayme."Faithistheacceptanceoftruthon theauthorityofGodrevealingit.Whenadistinguished scientisttellsmeabouttheageoffossils.Iacceptiton naturalfaith.Inevermakeatestofthebonesto verifyhisestimate.ButIhaveasufficientmotiveinhis credibility,namely,heisthekindofmanwhowould neitherdeceivenorbedeceived.Therefore,hisutteranceaboutthefossilage.Iacceptitastrue.

Now,overandabovethehuman,thereistheDivine. Asascientistcanrevealtometruthswhicharebeyond myreason,soGodcanrevealtometruthsbeyondthe powerofmyintelligence.SinceIknowHimtobeOne Whoneitherdeceivesnorcanbedeceived,IacceptHis revelationinfaith.

Howdomenreceiveascientifictruthwhichisbeyond theirknowledge?Somedenyit,someridiculeit,some aresilentthroughindecision.Thesamereactions happeninthefaceofaDivineRevelation.Remember thetimewhenOurBlessedLordcuredthemanwho wasblindfromhisbirth?Themiraclewasworkedto provethatHewastheSonofGod.Themiraclewasto beamotiveforbelievinginHim,justasassociations withcertainpeoplegiveusanassuranceoftheirtrustworthiness.But,somerefusingtorecognisethemiracle deniedthatitwasthesamemanwhowasbornblind: "Helookslikehim."Inotherwords,"thereisafraud." Butthemanbornblind,butnowrestoredtovision,said that"Iamhe."

Once-BlindManDefendsHisHealer

Nowthatfraudwaseliminated,someInquirersasked howthechangecametopass.Whenheansweredthat theLorddidit.theanswerofthosewhosawthemiracle was:"Howcanamanwhoisasinnerdosuchmiracles?" Hereisanewescapefrombelief.Thistime,deceitis nolongertheexcusefromassentingtobelief,butrather anattackuponcharacter.Therewasalatentconsciousnessthat"thisMandothmanymiracles,"butthey refusedtodrawtheproperinference.The,parentsof themanwereinsulted;theyverifiedtheblindnessof theirsonfrombirth,butnoamountofproofcould convincethem,thoughhehadsaid:"Sincetheworld beganithasnotbeenheardthatanyonehasopenedthe eyesofonebornblind.IfHewerenotofGod,Hecould donothing."

Inanswer,thosewhorefusedtoacceptthisconclusion attributedanevillifetotheonecured.Hemustbe

rotten,aliar,athief,anadulterer,anidiot,otherwise hewouldnotbesobelieving.Lateron,whenChrist sawtheman,Heaskedhim:"DoyoubelieveintheSon ofGodWhospeakstoyou?"Heanswered:"Ibelieve, Lord,andworshippedHim."

Faith,itwillbeseen,hasnothingtodowithexpectancy,withprosperity,withfate;itisnotevenrelated toanabstractstatement.ItcentresinaPerson-a PersonWhoisTruthitself.Itbecomesadialogue betweenthehumanandtheDivine,betweenadark mindandaLight,betweenaweakWillandasurrender, betweenSomeonetowardsWhomwehaveamotivefor believing,andourPoorselfwhoeatstheofferedbread. thoughheknowsnotallthemysteriesofphysiological digestion.WithoutthatSomeone,weallhaveafeebling senseofblindness,butwhenHisTruthisaccepted,we nolongerstumble,butwalk,aye,runintotheIneffable LightofthePerfectDay.

UniversityStudents' UnusualPilgrimage

THREEgroupsofuniversitystudentswalkedin pilgrimageacrossEnglandinHolyWeekcarrying threeheavycrossestotheancientshrineofOurLady ofWalsingham.

Thethreegroups,totallingaboutahundredmen,set outfromtheirrespectivecentres-London,Kettering andNorthampton-ontheeveofPalmSundayinthe fashionofthemedievalpilgrims.Eachgrouphada cumbersome100lb.cross.Theysleptatnightonthe hardfloorsofchurchhallsandclubrooms.Whenthey restedbydayontheroadsidearoundtheircrosses,they atefrommobilecanteensmadeupofthreebicyclesand atrailercarryingsandwiches.

AfterMass,offeredbythechaplainaccompanying eachgroup,theywouldbreakfastthenlistentoan addressontheWayoftheCrossandsetofftocontinue theirmarch.Everyhourtheymadeabriefhalt accompaniedbyameditationonthePassion.Every eveningtheysangComplineandattendedBenediction inalocalchurch.

OnGoodFridayafternoonallthreegroupsmeton theoutskirtsofWalsingham,joiningupwithabig universitypilgrimageorganisedbytheNewmanAssociation.FromtheancientSlipperChapel-wherethe pre-Reformationpilgrimsusedtoleavetheirshoestheyallwalkedthelast"holymile"totheshrineinthe sameway,barefoot. Attheshrine,despoiledattheReformationand recentlyrestored,allthepilgrimskeptvigiluntilthe festivitiesofEasterSunday.

Thestudentpilgrimageswerestartedin1948under thenameof"StudentCross"byMaundcoteCarter,then astudentattheLondonSchoolofEconomics.Hehas sinceemigratedtoCanada.

MOTIVESSHOULDBEFIRSTCONCERN

TPRESENT,theAustralianLaborPartyis sortingoutwhatkindofaprogrammeitwill presenttothepeoplebeforethenextFederal elections,Itistimethereforetoreviewthe principlesbywhichsuchaprogrammeshould beassessedandtotakenoteofthemainconsiderations involved1J1applyingthoseprinciplesinthecurrent politicalcontext,

Thedutyofanygovernmentistocareforthecommon goodofthecommunityitrepresents,andsothefirst questiontobeaskedaboutanyprogrammeputforward bythoseaspiringtogovernmentalauthoritymustbe: ISITGOINGTOBENEFITTHECOUNTRYASA WHOLE?

Sincethefamilyisthebasisofanysociety,aprogrammeassistingthefamilyman,andparticularlythe manwithabigfamily,mustcommandrespect.Inour ownsociety,theCatholicBishopssomeyearsago pointedtothevictimisationofthefamilymanand advocatedanincreaseinchildendowment.

Atthesametime,thinkingCatholicswillhesitateto supportapartywithafamilyprogrammeiftheyfear thatthesamepartyislikelytoalloweventuallythe completedestructionoffamilylifebyfailingtocope withthedangerofCommunism.

Ourmainconcernisnotthatthemajorityofpeople intheA.L.P.arelikelytogiveconscioussupportto Communists.Indeedontheparliamentarysideofthe partyinW.A.menlikeBeazley,CookeandWillesee haveshownanawarenessoftheCommunistdangerand takenactionagainstit.Buttheparliamentarypartyis notcompletelymadeupofmenoftheircalibre,and moreoveritiscontrolledtheoreticallybytheparty conferencesandthepartyexecutive:thepartymachine. Itisherethatconcernarises,evenaboutpeoplefrom ourownState.

Mr.Chamberlain,thefederalsecretaryoftheparty machine,hasrecentlyseenthroughandopposedaCommunistmovefromtheFremantleDistrictCouncil.He hasshownheresomeknowledgeofCommunistintrigue. ButbyhisreportonChinaandbyotheractionshehas shownthathedoesnotreallyunderstandwhatCommunismis.Themanwhocansincerelydescribea Communistregimeasbeingtrulytoleranttowardsthe ChristianFaithisnotnecessarilyasecretRed-heis simplyignorantofwhatmakesaCommunist,ofwhat itmeanstobeaCommunist.

Mr.Chamberlainisnotaloneinhisignorance.Many Catholicsshowsignsofthesamelackofknowledge,but theirignoranceisnotsosignificantbecausetheydo notholdtheimportantpositionthatMr.Chamberlain does.Howcanhe,withthebestofintentions,prove capableofcopingwiththeCommunistproblemwhenhe justdoesnotknowwhatitis?Byspreadingtheliehe wastoldinChinahehasalreadygivenunwittingsup- porttotheCommunistcause.Whereishelikelytobe givingunwittingsupportagain?

Unfortunately,manyofuswillbeleftwondering aboutwhatforceswilldominatetheA.L.P.onthe Communistissue.Certainlythereisanofficialparty banonunityticketswithRedsinunionelections,and severalA.L.P.membershavebeenexpelledforviolating theban:inothercases,however,violationshavebeen ignoredsoobviouslyastoindicateawidespreadignoranceoftheirimportance.Certainly,too,manyparlia- mentarymemberscanbereliedontoseethroughthe hazeand.followtheirconsciencesratherthanparty directivesiftheyareaskedtosupportCommunism.But wherethereiswidespreadignoranceoftheessenceof avitalproblemthereisadecideddangerthatitwill notbetackledinaneffectivemanner.

TheColumbanFathers,whohavehadmembersof theirsocietyexpelledfromCommunistcountries,areat presentmakinganoutstandingcontributiontoAustralianthinkingbybringingoutfromEnglandawellknowex-Communistlecturer.HisnameisDouglis Hyde.Hisspecialityisteachingpeopletounderstand justwhatitmeanstobeaCommunist.

HisGracetheArchbishophasarrangedwiththe FathersforDouglasHydetospeakinPerthattheend ofMay-withoutbitternesstowardsCommunistsand withoutfavourtoanypoliticalparty.Ifheiswidely heardandheeded,hisvisitcouldbeoflastingbenefit.

WenineSisterswereat KasongoonTuesday,February14,whentheycameto getus.Oneofuswassufferingfrombronchial-pneumonia.Asoldiercameand toreherfromherbedand pushedherontoatruck, strikingheratthesametime withthebuttofhisgun.An agedSisterwhocouldnot walkfastenoughwasstruck onthearm.Asshestaggered anotherSister,whotriedto helpher,receivedaviolent blowonthehead.Finally, bothfellandwerepushed ontothetruck.

Uponourarrivalin Kasongoataboutfour o'clockintheafternoon,we werethrownintoprison, fourinacellmeasuringsix feetbyfourfeetandsixfeet high.TheBrotherwhose lungswereinjuredbythe blowthathereceived,sufferedatrociouspainduring thenight.Inprison,however,wedidnothaveto sufferthecrueltiesthat manyothermissionaries andalsootherEuropeans andCongolesehadtoundergo.

Thenextdaywewereset atliberty.TheFathersof SambaandalsotheSisters returnedtotheir?nission. ThreeSistersofSamba, DaughtersoftheCrossof Liege,weretheSistersof Kasongoduringthenightof horrordescribedabove.

ThepriestsatMalelareturnedtotheirmission,but theinjuredBrotherobtained permissiontogotoKindu formedicalcare.Thetwo., daytripbyambulancetired him,andhewasconfinedto bedforsometime.

ThesituationintheisolatedmissionofManiema hasbecomeimpossible. EuropeanpriestsandSisters areexhaustedandillphysically.TodayallthemissionariesofSambaandMalela arebeinggatheredtogether inKindu.

Itissomedaysnowthat thingshavenotbeengoing verywellatWamasa.Difficultiesarebeingmadebecauseofthesalariesof teacherswhohavenotbeen paidsinceDecember,1960. Acertainemployeeofthe administration-whocalls himselfcommissionerofthe districtoradjunctcommissioner-saidinthepresence ofalltheteachersandothers thathehadpersonallysent methemoneyandthatI hadspentitorsentitto Europe.

Thisexplainsevents.The nextevening,however,our commissionersenta"little word"totheteacherstotell themthatthemoneyhad neverbeensent.

Theatmospherewasheavy. Christianscameandasked metohidemyself.Then camethedeathofLumumba.Thefollowingday,at theendofMass,thepolice rndtheircommissionerwere theretoarrestthe"Bel-

Afterthiscertainteachers complainedtothecommissionerofpolicebecauseI wasnotarrested,although (theycharged)Ihadstolen theirsalariesforthree months.SomehourslaterI wasarrestedwithoutviolence.Iwaswithanumber ofCongoleseandEuropeans.

Weweretakentoahouse aboutsixmilesaway.We werenotmistreateduntil fourintheafternoon,when foursoldiersarrived.Iwas consideredasanevilone,as onewhohadsentmoney thatbelongedtoteachersto Europe.

UnobatingFerocity

FromthenIwasrepeatedlybeatenwithclubs. Thesamewastrueofthe others.Ourhandsweretied andtheropeswerepassed betweenourlegs.Tiedto oneanotherinthismanner, wehadtositontheground. Iwasferociouslybeatenon thehead,armsandallover mybody.Bloodgushedfrom myhead. SlightReprieve Atmidnightatruckarrivedandsoldierstookme backtothemission.There Iwasabletowashand changemyblood-soaked clothes.Iwasabletotake acupofcoffee. Iasked absolutionofthepriestwho wasthere,asIbelievedI wouldneverseehimagain. TheservantsandtheChristiansofthemissionwerein tears. Latertherewasatripto theprisonofKasongo,where Ispentthenightinacell withothers.Happily,Iwas notbeaten.Wewereforced togoafiouttheprisontwice onourkneessaying,"I killedLumumba,theChrist oftheCongo." Thenextdaywewere freedandIspenttwodays inbed.atthemissionof Kasongpunabletomove.A Congolesemedicalassistant treatedmeanddressedthe woundsonmyhead.Later hewasabletobringmeto KinduwithtwoWhiteSistersandaHolyGhost Brother.Ireallycameout ofhell.

Threeweekspassedwithoutanyfurtherwordon thistragedy.Asisknown, theEasternProvincehas,for thepastthreemonths,been almostentirelycutofffrom therestoftheworld.The followingbriefreportonthe deathofFatherTegelshas sincebeenreceived.

OnFebruary13,1961, sometravellingsoldiersarrivedinBasokoandasked forlodgingatthemission. FatherTegelswentwith themtotheschoolofthe missionandindicatedthe artisanschoolasaplace thatwouldbesuitable.

Asheleft,oneofthesoldiers,whoseemedtobe undertheinfluenceofhemp, rushedatthepriestand triedtobayonethim.The priestescapedthisattack andrushedtotheinterior ofthehouse,fearingforhis life.

Thenextmorninghewent totheschooltotalkwith thesoldiersandthesurf managainthreatenedhim withhisrifle.Thepriestwas forcedtoretreat,butashe wasmountingsomestairs hewasshotthreetimesin theback.Hestaggeredand felldead.

LunaticMurderers

Thesoldiers,proudofthis exploit,begantodance aroundhisbodysinging.At about11o'clockpolicearrivedandtriedinvainto calmdowthesemadmen. Itwasnotuntilfourinthe afternoonthatthesoldiers lefttheplaceafterbeing summonedbytheirleader.

Furtherinformationis lacking.Weknowonlythat theotherpriestsofthemissiontookrefugeintheir roomswhentheyheardthe firinganditwasonlywhen calmwasrestoredthatthey discoveredtheblood-soaked bodyoftheirsuperior.

FatherJosephTegelswas bornonApril20,1923,at Vlodrop,Holland.Heenteredthenovitiateofthe PriestsoftheSacredHeart ofAstenandmadehisreligiousprofessiononSeptember8,1945.Hisordinationtothepriesthoodtook placeatHees-Nijmegenon July15,1951.In1952he wenttotheVicariateApostolicofStanleyville,which wasthenunderthecareof BishopGamilleVerfaille. Hewassoonrecognised forzealandorganising abilityandappointedsuperiorofthemissionofBasoko. Hisprematuredeathatonly 38deprivestheflourishing missionofafineleader.

Earlythisyearawriter inaCaironewspaperupbraidedAlAzharfornot sendingmissionariestothe newlyindependentAfrican countries. Ahighofficial ofthemosque-university wrotearevealingreply.He saidthattheauthoritiesin AlAzhar"arenotlosing sightofthespiritualneeds ofAfrica.Theyhavetwo largemissionsfulfillingtheir dutyasregardstheAfricans. Buttherectorof AlAzharisveryanxious thattheseactivities,inths Africancontinentespecially ,benotpublicised."

Everythingisfreetothe AlAzharstudent-tuition, boardandhiswayto Cairo,hehasnoexpenses forthenextfouryears.A studentfromanyAfrican countrycancometoCairo withoutapassportandwithoutmakingarrangementsin advanceandbesureofa freeplaceinAlAzhar.

CRUCIFORM DESIGN

ANEWCATHOLICCHURCHinourareaisbeingso designedthat,thoughitwillaccommodate1,200worshippers,noonewillbemorethan 14rowsawayfromthesanctuary. Ofcruciformdesign,thesanctuary, withafree-standing\altaratthe centre-pointoftheverticalandhorizontallinesofthecross,willhavemembersofthe congregationfacingthealtartramthreesides.

Othershaveattemptedthesamethinginachurch-inthe-roundformwiththepeopleentirelyaroundthe altar,orinasemi-circle,whichalsohelpstobringthe worshipperclosertothealtar.Thechapelofthenew ChristianBrothers'CollegeneartheCausewayistobe builttoacirculardesign. Itseemstomethatallthesemovesaregoodbecause theytakerecognition,ofthefactthatthecongregation hasaparttoplayinMassandthatthepeoplecansee andheartheactionandwordsofthepriest,themore effectivelytheywillbedrawnintotheactionofthe Massitself.

THEDAYSoflongandnarrowchurches,clutteredby pillarsthatobstructtheviewofthealtar,seemtobe passing.Nowthereismore concernonthepartofparish priestsandarchitectsthatthe needsofthepeoplemustbe accommodated.Anotherfactor occasioningtheseremarksisthedecisionthatwasrecentlymaderegardingtheSisters'chapelinthenew conventbeingbuiltinourparish.Thesizeofthespace forthechapelwasfixedbythenatureofthebuilding inalong.narrowroom,30feetby13feet.Itwas decided,therefore,toplacethealtaragainstthelong wall,oppositethewindows,ratherthanattheheadof thelongroom.

Thiswillpermittheplacingoftheprie-dieuxforthe Sistersonthreesidesofthealtar,drawingallcloser tothegreatcentralfunctionoftheMass.Especially doesthisseemimportantinaconventchapelwhere. becauseofthelimitednumbers,theopportunityto conveytheearlyideaof"Christiansaroundthealtar" issomuchmorefeasible.

WhenweconsiderthatessentiallytheMassisameal wecanseethatthisrelationshiptothealtarisimportant.Withtherecentemphasisontheimportanceof participationbythecongregationinthdactionsofthe Mass,itisnecessaryforustomakesuchparticipation easierbydesigningchurchesthatwillbringusallcloser tothealtar.

Laos,thesoutheastAsiantinderboxthatcouldmakethecoldwarhot,isoneoftheleast CatholiccountriesinAsia.

WTHILELaosisadjacenttoVietnam,whichis WsecondonlytothePhilippinesinitspercentage ofCatholicsintheFarEast,theCatholicsofLaos constituteonlyaboutonepercentofthepopulation. Theynowtotalabout24,000inapopulationofbetween twoandtwoandahalfmillion.

Despitethegainsinthe pastten.years-resulting partiallyfromaninfluxof VietnameserefugeesChristianityhasalways hadroughgoinginLaos. Theland-lockedkingdom ispredominantlyBuddhistincultureandreligion.Butmanyofthe isolatedtribesinthelofty mountainswhichcover muchofthecountryare stillgiventodemonworship.

Thefirstattempttopreach theGospelinLaos-thenan extensivekingdom-was madeinthe17thcenturyby aPortugueseJesuitmissionary,JoaoMariaLeiria.He preachedforfiveyearsin Vientiane,theoldcapital, andnowtheadministrative capital.ButtheviolentoppositionoftheBuddhist bonzesforcedhimtoleave

thecountryinDecember. 1647. FatherLeiria'sworkhad nolastingeffect.Vientiane, wherehepreached.was sackedbytheSiamesein 1827,andwithinaperiodof yearswasovergrownwith jungle,leavingtheremains ofthearchitecturallyfamous palaceandpagoda,butno traceoftheChristianmission.

Thefirstmissionaryefforts inmoderntimesbeganin 1881,butwereingeneral hamstrungbythecivilauthorities.Itwasnotuntil 1893,whentheFrenchmade Laosaprotectorate.that Catholicmissionarieshad anyrealfreedomtopreach. Butthefewpriestswho cametoLaosthencame mainlytoministertothe smallCatholiccommunity ofAnnamitesandTonkinese residinginLaos.

Themissionsgainedoffi-thecountry,inJanuary, cialstatusinJune,1938,1960.LastJuly,Father whentheHolySeeerectedMarioBorzaga,O.M.I.,a thePrefectureApostolicofmissionaryfromItaly,disVientianeandLuangPra-appearedinterritoryheavily bang.ThelittleCatholicinfiltratedbythePathetLao. congregationintheroyal Thecurrentstrifegained capitalatLuangPrabangnewmomentumlastAugust hadtorelyonthepriestat9,whenthepro-Western Vientiane.ItwasthenagovernmentofPremierTiao ten-dayboatexpeditionupSomsanithwasoustedby theMekongRiver,andthetroopsledbyCaptainKong priestcouldonlygettoLe.Vientianewasshelledin LuangPrabangtwoorthreeSeptember-allegedlyby timesayear.Thenin1940,ThaiforcesacrosstheMeLuangPrabanggotaparishkongRiverinThailand,and priestofitsown. CommunistInvasion

TheFrenchreturnedin Elevendaysafterthe 1945,andgraduallygrantedshellingofVientiane,Sam greaterself-governmenttoNeua,theprovincialcapital theLaotians.Thisculmi-oftheprovinceofthesame natedinindependenceforname,wascapturedbythe Laos,.withintheFrenchcommunist-ledPathetLao. Union,in1949,andfinally FatherLucienBouchard, thewithdrawalofFrenchleftSamNeuaonlytwo forcesin1954. hoursbeforethetownfell. HereachedVientianewith fiveothermissionariesand sixLaotiansafterafive-day marchofmorethanahundredmilesinmonsoondrenchedmountainsand jungles.

Thecivilwarhadbeen raginginnext-doorVietnamintheearlypost-war period,andcommunist-led forcesfromNorthVietnam invadedLaosonseveral occasions,especiallyin195354,whentheVietnamese Redswereaidedbythe PathetLao,arebelgroupin Laos.

InFebruary,1954,Bishop JeanArnaud,M.E.P.,then PrefectApostolicofThakhek.-theChurchjurisdictioninthesouthernpartof Laoswhichwassetupas prefecturesin1950andbecameavicariatein1958wasseizedbyRedforces.He andthreeotherpriestsof theParisForeignMission Societywereheldcaptive forsometime.ASisterand 15novicenunswerealso captured,butwereletfree infivedays.

GuerillaWarfare

Laositselfhasbeenhitby intermittent'guerrillawarfareeversincetheendof thelastwar.TheGeneva conferencehgreementof July,1954,providedforan endtothehostilitiesinLaos aswellasforthepartition ofVietnam.Undertheaccord,PathetLaorebelforces weremovedtothetwo north-eastprovincesofLaos. Thesouthernofthetwo provinces,SamNeua,isthe mostCatholicpartofLaos,

FatherBouchardreported inVientianethatSamNeua hadbecomeuntenablewhen PathetLaoforcesmounted artilleryonahilltopless thantwomilesaway.The pro-Westerncommanders evacuatedthetown,andthe rebelstookover.

OblatesRemain

Thepriestsaidthatfour FrenchOblatepriestsremainedbehindatthemission.TheCatholicsofSam NeuahadremainedsteadfastintheirFaithdespite yearsofintensivecommunistpropaganda,hesaid.He attributedthisinparttothe martyrdomofFatherJoseph Tien,theonlynativepriest oftheprovince,inApril, 1954.

SincethefallofSam Neua,thePathetLaoforces, aidedbytheSovietUnion andbytheNorthVietnamesecommunists,have madesteadyprogress.Little newshasreachedtheoutsideworldonthefateofthe Catholicpopulationorofthe missionaries.

The1981yearbookissued bytheHolySeeliststhe totalnumberofCatholicsas 24,650.TheVicariateApostolicofVientiane,under anduntil1958waspartofFrench-bornBishopEtienne theTonkineseSeeofThanLoosdregt,O.M.I.,accounts Hoa,nowpartofcommu-for14,987ofthese.Ithas nist-ruledNorthVietnam. 15priests-threeofthem Peacewasrestoredindiocesan-and27Sisters. 1957,whenthePathetLaoTheVicariateApostolicof movementwastransformedThakhek,underBishopJean intoalegallyrecognisedArnaud,M.E.P.,aFrenchpoliticalparty.Butthemanwhohasservedasa PathetLaoguerrillasweremissionaryinLaosforover soononthemoveagain. aquarterofacentury-has Guerrillaskilledamis-9,663Catholics.Ithas38 sionarypriestinPakse,inpriests-includingfivediothesouth-westernpartofcesan-and54Sisters.

Fifteenyearsaftersheand45otherMaryknollSisters wererescuedfromLosBanosprisonbyAmericanparatroopersduringWorldWarII,MotherMaryColeman, Mother-GeneraloftheMaryknollSistersofSt.Dominic, returnstothePhilippines,herfirstmission.Sheiscurrentlyvisitinghercommunity'shousesinAfricaandthe Orient.HereinDulawan,onMindanao,shetalkswith FilipinoMuslims,whosechildrenattendtheMaryknoll schoolhere.

Hetracedthehistoryof theconfraternityfromits beginningsinthe16thcenturydowntothepresent day.In1902thisconfraternitywasintroducedinto thedioceseofNewYork andin1922intotheArchdioceseofLosAngelesin circumstancessimilar'toour ownhereinPerthatpresent.
