ExpansionOf CatholicSchools

TheEducationCommitteeoftheFederal ParliamentaryLabourPartyvisitedPerthlast week.Anumberofinformativediscussions tookplacearrangedbyMr.KimBeazley, FederalMemberforFremantle.

Amongstbodieswhichthe Committeemetwerethe Teachers'Union,TheParentsandCitizensFederation, PublicSchoolsHeadmasters, TheCatholicEducationOfficeandtheParentsand FriendsFederation.This reportconcernsthelast two.

Throughthesecontactsthe Committeegainedmuch firsthandknowledgeofthe difficultiesconfrontingeducationinWesternAustralia. MembersoftheCommittee expressedmorethanonce theirconcernfa:theeducationofallAustralian childrenwithoutdiscrimination.

Figureswerequotedto theCommitteewhichshowedthattheexpansionof numbersinCatholicschools overtheperiod1946-1959 hadalmostdoubled.Itparalleledasimilarexpansion inStateschools.Butthe expansioninthenumbers ofteachersinCatholic schoolshadperforcelagged behindthatinStateschools. Thisthrewagreatburden onteachingstaffsinCatholicschoolswhichthey couldnotbearindefinitely.

TheexpansionofCatholic schoolshadbeeninvaluable totheStateeducationsysteminrelievingandassistingtheEducationDepartmentinitsowncrisisof expansionineducationprovisions.Thepositioncould notcontinueandthishad tobefacedbyresponsible Governments.

Tributewaspaidtothe successiveconcessionsthat hadbeenmadebyWest AustralianGovernmentsin theprovisionofteaching aids for Independent SchoolsintheState.The unanimityinParliamentin givingtheseconcessionsand thetemperateclimatein whichtheyhadbeenreceivedbyalleducational interestswasanobjectlessonwhichmadeamarked impressionontheCommittee. Brisbaneofassistanceto secondaryeducationwasdiscussed.Thevalueofassistanceinthisspherewas app.eciated.Buttheneed ofprimaryschoolsforassistancewasnottobeneglectedsincethiswasa numerousandimportant phasewhichwascalling moreandmorefortheuse oflayteachers.Ithadalso bornethemajorbruntof accommodatingmanynationalitiesofmigrantchildenbroughttoAustralia throughGovernmentpolicy.

Themeetingswereconductedinacordialandreciprocativemanner.The prayersofallareasked thatgoodmaycomeof them.

1961Archdiocesan ClericalChanges

TheHolySeehasdirected thattheboundarybetween theArchdioceseofPerth andtheAbbeyNulliusof NewNorcia,bechangedso thattheParishofSouthern CrosswillhenceforthbeincorporatedintotheArchdioceseofPerth.Thenew parishpriestisRev.M.G. TheChurchofEnglandannounceditis establishingapostinRomeforofficialliaison withtheHolySeeduringthepreparationsfor theSecondVaticanCouncil.

TheAnglicanChurch Informationofficesaidthat theVeryRev.BernardC. Pawley,CanonofElycathedral,isbeingtransferredto Rometotakeuptheassignment.

"CanonPawleywillhea linkbetweentheChurchof EnglandCouncilonInterChurchRelationsandthe RomanCatholicSecretariat forPromotingChristian Unity,ofwhich(Augustin) CardinalBeaischairman," theannouncementsaid.

Ineffect,CanonPawley willbetheAnglicanoppositenumberofFather ThomasF.Stransky,C.S.P., ofMilwaukee,whowasassignedtoafulltimepost withtheChristianUnity secretariattohandlecommunicationswithEnglishspeakingnon-Catholics.

CanonPawley,whospeaks Italian,iswell-knownasa roving"diplomat"forthe AnglicanChurch.Hehas madepreviouscontactswith ChristiangroupsinGermany,Belgium,Franceand Italy-wherehewasa prisonerduringWorldWar II.Heismarried,andhas beenservingastreasurerof Elycathedral.Thedate forhisdepartureforRome wasnotimmediatelyfixed.

TheAnglicanannouncementsaidthattheArchbishopsofCanterburyand Yorkmadetheappointment sothatCanonPawley"may beavailableforinformation inresponsetotherequest oftheRomanCatholicsecretariatforclosercontact andbetterunderstanding withthenon-RomanCatholicchurches."

Theeffectiveteachingofreligiontochildrenwhoare unabletoacquireaknowledgeoftheirHolyFaith, becauseofparentalneglectorforotherreasons,isone ofthenoblestandmostefficaciousworksofCatholic Action.

FormanyyearshereinPerththeLegionariesofMary haveassistedinthisworkwiththecheerfulgenerosity whichcharacterisestheirwholeapostolate.

Thecatechistswhowillcommencetrainingon Mondaywill,forthepresent,impartreligiousinstructionat.Stateschoolsandsupplementaryreligious classes.Butastimeelapses,amoreambitiouscatecheticalapostolatewillbeundertaken.

Anyonewhofeelsthatheorshecanhelpinanyway inthisworkisaskedtocontacttheCatholicEducation Office.Peoplecanhelpinmanywaysbesidesteaching. Some200parishionersofSt.Peter'sAngli canparish,VictoriaPark,gatheredintheir parishhallrecentlytowitnessthehanding overofchequestothevalueof£66donated bythemtowardstherebuildingoftheCatholicandMethodistchurchesinDwellingup.

FatherHarryBrennan, parishpriestofPinjarra,and theRev.S.Jenkins,Director ofMethodistHomeMissions,acceptedthegiftsin abriefandtouchingceremony. Thepresentation wasmadebymembersof St.Peter'svestrywhowere introducedbytheRev. RalphThomas.

FatherBrennantoldthe gatheringthatthemoney receivedwouldnotbeput intothebuildingfundbut wouldbeusedtobuysomethingforthealtarofthe newchurchandpromised thatitwouldbeengraved asapermanentrecordof thefactthatitwasagift fromtheAnglicanparishof VictoriaParkandatangible signoftheuniversaldesi:e forchurchunity.

TheRev.Thomasexpressedthewishthatthegestureofhisparishioners wouldinspireothercongregationstosimilaracts. Earlierintheeveninghe hadspokentohispeople onthethemeoftrueChristianandchurchunity,he said.

MODERNMANFINDSITHARDTOBEALONE,nordoeshewonttobealone.Onemight almostsaythatiftherewerenocrowds,hewouldmakecrowdsinordertolosehimself. Whenthecrowdiswalkingtowardstheabysshewhotakestheoppositedirectionisthought tobemod.Uneasyconscience,arepressedsenseofguilt,aflightfromtheheartwhere deepthoughtsareforged,alltendtomakethemanoftodayifnotthe"organisationman"at leostthecrowdman.

ANABSORBINGCHARACTERinNewTestament historybythenameofNicodemustellsofhow hissoulwasforcedtofaceitsindividualityand responsibility.Nicodemuswasanintellectual,anold manandastudentaboveallelse.Hehadjustheard thatOurBlessedLordhadgoneintotheTempleof Jerusalem,haddrivenoutthebuyersandsellersand withanindignantvoicesaidthatHisFather'sHouse wasnottobemadeadenofthieves.

TheauthorityChristclaimedfordoingthisastounded theculturedNicodemus,andsodidHismiracles.Nicodemusresolvedtomakeaninvestigation.Hecalledon OurLord"atnight."Heneverappearsatanyother timeintheGospelexceptatnight.Itisperhapsunfair tothisgreatstudenttosaythathecameatnightbecause hewasafraid,forhislaterconductproveshimtobe anhonestman.

WhenhehadfoundChrist,hesaidtoHim"Master, weknowthatThouhastcomefromGodtoteachus; noone,unlessGodwerewithHim,coulddothemiracles whichThoudost."NoticethatthoughNicodemuscame alone,heusedthepluralform-"We,""weknow"that is,ourparty,ourgroup,ouruniversity,ourelite.He wasachildofhisage,andwantedtobeknownassuch. Hispersonalitywasmergedintothecollectivity.Despite theofficial"we,"heunwittinglybetrayedthathehada personalproblem,otherwisehewouldnothavecome. OurLordnowpulledNicodemusoutoftheofficial circleinwhichhehadhiddenhimself,bytellinghim thathisproblemwasaspersonalashisbirth.Asmen arenotborninaheap,sotootheproblemofsalvation mustbefacedbyeachonealone,forittooisabirth. Thecarnal-mindedNicodemuscouldnotunderstand thattheDivineMasterwastalkingnotofphysicalbirth

Nicodemuscameinasarepresentativeofagroup, butheleftasaperson,andthatheremainedtherest ofhislife.Twoyearslater,whenOurDivineLordwas arrestedbythepolice,whostandsoutagainstthegroup, whoisnolongertheorganisationman,whonowdares thinkforhimself,andbravely,too?

ItisNicodemus,asheasksthosewhooncewerepart ofthe"we":"Isitthewayofourlawtojudgeaman withoutgivinghimahearingfirst,andfindingoutwhat heisabout?"Thetauntthatwashurledbackathim wasthathewasnolongerthinkingwiththeparty;so theyaddressedhiminthesingular:"Artthoutooa Galilean?"Nicodemushadbecomestrongatthevery pointwherehewasweakest;heassertedtherightof hisownindividualsoul.

Finally,whenthehosannahshadceased,thepalm turnedintospears,andthecrossraiseditselfonCalvary andthesunhiditslight-itwastimeforthenightman toappear.Andsohedid.Whenthecrowdswere walkingintheotherdirection,beatingtheirbreasts, hecameupthehill,solitaryandalone,bringingmyrrh andaloesofahundredpoundsweighttoembalmand anointtheLordforthreedays.Nicodemuswasborn again,hewasnolongeranorganisationman-hewas amanwho,inthenight,foundtheLight.

TheIrishInAustralia'sHistory

T.PATRICK'SDAYmustalwaysremainan occasionofgreatsignificanceforCatholicsin Australia.Eventhoughthepeoplewhomake uptheChurchherebenative-bornandofmany nationalorigins,whilemenstillhavememories andwhilehistoryisstillread,thestubborntruth,ever waitingnewdiscoveriesbyenquiringminds,isthat CatholicisminAustraliawasbornandnourishedunder GodbythepriestsandthepeopleofIreland,

ItisafineheritageofwhichanyChurchinany nationmightwellbeproud.

ThefirstIrishmentocometoAustraliawereconvicts, andthefirstlargeinfluxofthemwerebroughtoutfor theiractivepartintherebellionof1798,whenIreland roseinoneofhermanyeffortstogainherfreedomfrom Englishoppression.Eventhefirstpriestswereconvicts underthesamesortofcondemnation.Moreover,itwas anIrishpriest,FatherJeremiahO'Flynn,whosailed freelyintoBotanyBaycolonyin1817andraisedsuch astormbyhispresencethatAustralianCatholicswere grantedemancipationbeforeitwaswoninEngland.

AgainitwasanIrishpriest,FatherTherry,whoin 1820becamethefirstCatholicchaplaininAustralia appointedbytheBritishGovernment.Itwasthispriest whosetapatternforpastoralworkbyhisclosenessto thepeopleandhiscarefortheneedyandoppressed, whichhasbeenanexampleandinspirationtomanya priestsincehistime.

ThefirstAustralianCardinalwasagainanIrishman, whostandsasaguidinglightforallthoseinterested inthesocialproblem.Heespousedthecauseofthe unionistsofhisday,supportedthemintheirgreatstrike of1890againsttheshipowners,andoutlinedaprogrammeofsocialreformwhichnow,seventyyearslater, isstillsoundandstillnotfullyimplemented.

Notonlyontheclericalside,butamongthelaity too,ithasbeentheIrishwhohavepredominated.They madeupthebulkoftheCatholicsinthebeginning when,oppressedfortheirreligionanddeprivedoftheir priests,theykeptthefaithoftheapostlesunaideduntil reliefandfreedomcame.

Andwheninthe1850'sGovernmenttaxationof minerswasexcessiveandpolicemethodsbecamearbitrary,itwasanIrishCatholic,PeterLalor,wholed themenofBallaratattheEurekaStockade,demanding therightofpeopletofullparliamentaryrepresentation andnopropertyqualificationformembersofparliament.

Inspiteofallthesespectacularevents,itisnotso muchherethatthegreatestdebtofAustralialies,but rathertothethousandsandthousandsofordinarylay people,nunsandbrothersandpriests.whohave enduredandlabouredamongusasSt.Patrick,theholy youthofold.labouredamongtheirforefathers,andat thecostofyouthandhealthandfriendsandevenlife itselfhavebroughtthetruthandhopeandlovethatis inChristtothepeopleundertheSouthernCross.

HEfirstCatholicmissionevertobeestablishedinPapuaisfacinganacutetransport crisis.ThisistheMissionoftheSacredHeart,foundedonYule IslandbyBishopVerjusin1885.Duringthe75yearsofitsexistence,themissionhasbeenprimarilydependentonseatransport. NowtheSt.Francis,theonlymissionboatlargeenoughtocarry cargo,hasbeendeclaredunseaworthyandistobebrokenup.

Suppliesforthemissionheadquartersontheisland mustcomebyseaallthewayfromPortMoresby,a distanceoil60miles.Thereisnocoastalroadinthis difficultcountryofswampsandunbridgedrivers. FromYuleIsland,suppliesarerelayedbylaunchto themissionstationsalongthecoast,orbyhorsecaravanstothemanystationsintheruggedmountain rangesoftheinterior.Onlythemosturgentlyneeded cargocanbesentbyaironaccountofhighfreight rates.

Themissionisthereforeobligedtomaintainaboat ofatleast25tonstomaintaintheflowofsupplies.This isessentialtothewell-beingofisolatedFathers,Sisters andBrothers,manyofwhomareseveraldays'walk fromtheneareststore.Anyoneknowingthemission atfirsthandrealisesonlytoowellthehardshipcaused byrunningoutofsuchbasisnecessitiesasflour,sugar orkerosene.

Oncebefore,15yearsago,themissionwasinurgent needofasimilarboat.AustralianCatholicsresponded generouslytoanappeallaunchedbyFatherAndre Dupeyrat,M.S.C.,thenotedauthorof"Mitsinari,"and themissionwasabletobuytheSt.Francis.Thisboat wassailedtoYuleIslandbyacrewofAustralian volunteers,whostayedontoworkforthemissionas unpaidmissionarylaymen.

TheSt.Francishasbeeninconstantuseeversinceinallweathers,inheavyseas.Now iswornout andfacesthescrapheap.

Becauseoftheseconditions,FatherVazwasforced toworksecretly.AtSillalehediscoveredaCatholiccommunitywhichhad resistedallattemptstosuppressit.Heworkedthere foratimeandthen,under pressurefromaviolently anti-Catholicgovernment, wenttoPutlamandKandy.

Denouncedatfirstasa Portuguesespy,FatherVaz wasthrownintoprison,but hesoonwonthefavourof thekingandwasallowed topursuehisworkinpeace.

Theoccasionofthisappealwasaletterofloyalty presentedbytheEastGermanCDUtoEastGerman PresidentWalterUlbricht. AccordingtotheRedpress theloyaltyletterwassigned by32,000"Christiancitizens," including 2.000 Catholics.

InformedsourcesinBerlinsaythepressureisa newattempttoembarrass theCatholicpopulation, whichlutebeenstanding firmagainstcommunist threats. Acommunist campaigntoorganise"peace meetings"ofCatholics throughouttheSovietZone waswreckedagainstthis Catholicfirmness.

Petrusblatt,thenewspaper oftheDioceseofBerlin,has expressedconcernoverthe extraordinarycommunistactivityinthefieldofreligion. Thediocesannewspaper saidthisactivityseemsto threatennew pressure againsttheChurchand againstCatholics.

DuringtheMassoneoftheolderboysincassockand surplicereadstheEpistleandGospelfortheMassof theday.Thus,eventheyoungerchildrenandthose whodonothavedailymissalsareabletobeenriched throughthemagnificentScripturalpassagesthatare foundintheseasonalMassesofLent.

BUTinthemeantime,thecommunicationsmedia renewedtheirpropagandacampaignagainstthe Church.Therehadbeenamonth-longlullintheinvectiveagainsttheChurchthatwaslaunchedatthe beginningof1960.whentheBishopsissuedajoint pastorallettercondemningthewaveofarrestsand violationsofhumanrightsundertheTrujillodictator-

JanuarywasthemonthinwhichtheTrujilloregime wasprojectinganewimageof"closeco-operation" betweenChurchandStateintheDominicanRepublic. ItwasalsothemonthinwhichpuppetPresident JoaquinBalaguerandhiscabinetwrotetotheBishops askingthemtoconferthetitleof"Benefactorofthe Church"onGeneralissimoTrujillo.ThetitlepresumablywouldhaveservedasacompaniontotheGeneralissimo'sciviltitle,"BenefactoroftheFatherlandand FatheroftheNewNation,"whichisusedinallofficial documents.

TheBishopsnotifiedthePresidentandthecabineton February6thattheycouldneithergrantnorrecommendsuchaChurchtitleforGeneralissimoTrujillo.

Acloseassociateof MotherDengelformore than30yearssummedup hercharacterthisway: "MotherDengelisa simplebutdetermined person.Shehasresponded tohervocationandtothe demandsplacedbefore herfromthemomentshe wenttostudyinaforeign countrysothatshecould practisemedicineinIndia.

ThreeyearsagoaLayApostolatewasformedfor laymissionaries.ThemembersoftheapostolatededicatetheirlivestotheworkofGodandmakepromises ofpoverty,chastityandobedience.Thesepromises aremadeforaperiodoftwoyearsandthemissionaries areappointedtoworkonthePallottlneMissionsin thenorthofWesternAustralia.

Theapostolateisan auxiliaryofthe"VerSacrumMolise"LayInstitute. Thisinstituteconsistsofa groupofyoungwomen whohavedevotedtheir livestoworkingamong thelaypeople,andthey remainworkingoutinthe worlddoingtheirvarious tasks,suchasofficework, teachingandhelping motherswithyoungchildren.TheSuperiorofthis institutecontrolsthelay missionarygirls.

Turnsaretakenbythe girlstodothedifferent typeofwork-sacristan, cooksforboththegirls' andboys'houses,bellringer,waitingontable, settingtable,doingthe housework,dishwashing, wateringthegarden,arranginghymnstobesung atMassandBenediction, readingtheEpistleand Gospelatlunchandthe eveningmeal.

Otherworkthegirls learntocarryoutismending,washing,ironing, bottlingoffruitandbaking.Thisistheworkthat istaughttothenativeson

Thedaystartsat6a.m. Primeissaid,followedby meditationandMass,both boysandgirlsattending; Afterbreakfastalecture isgivenbytheSpiritual Director,FatherSylvester, andthencommencesthe tasksallottedfortheday.
