TheHon.theMinisterforInformationhasagaincovered himselfwithdoubtfuldistinctioninhisfightagainstthe stainingofAustralia.Motivated,doubtless,bythesame gallantrywhichAustraliansoldiersdisplayedintheOwen Stanleys,hehasintimatedthatJapanesewillinvadeAustraliaonlyoverhisdeadbody-andthateven,thoughtheyattemptinfiltrationinthepeacefulguiseofcontestantsinthe OlympicGames.Andinevidenceofhisgrimdeterminationinthematter,hedeclaresthatthefeelingsofmany Australianpeopleinsuchamattermeanmoretohimthan anyfilthylucrewhichmightaccruefromtheholdingof theseGamesinMelbourne.IfwemustchosebetweenhavingnoJapsandhavingnoGames,hewillcourageouslyad,heretohisstand,aslongasbreathandthepowersofMinisterlieinhisbody.

Thusweareoftentreatedtothespectacleofamanabdicatingfromthepositionhemustknowtobejust,andyielding tothetemptationtoturnpopularfeelingtohisownuse andbenefit.Pilatedidjustthat,andhewasneitherthe firstnorthelasttosmilinglywashhishandsofguilt,explainingthathewasmerelythemouthpieceofdemocracy.

Thewholepointaboutthemartyrisnotthatheadheredtohisprinciples,butthatheadheredtothemeven whentodosomadehimunpopular.Inlikemanner,we maybestgaugethealtruismofapolitician'sconcernforthe feelingsofothersbynotinghowfarheisresponsivetothe feelingsoftheunenfranchised.TheHon.Ministerprofesses athrobbingsympathywiththerelativesandfriendsofAustraliansoldiersbutcheredbytheJapanese.Whatdoeshe thinkofthefeelingsofChrist,WhodiedontheCrossfor theJapsnolessthanforus;Whocommandedustoloveour neighbourasourselves;Whoextolledthevirtueofforgiving one'senemiestothepointofwarningthatwithoutitwe couldexpectnoforgivenessforourselves;andWhogaveus thefrightfuladmonition:"Inasmuchasyoudothesethings tooneofMyleastbrethren,youdothemuntoMe"?

Theslavishadherenceofmanypoliticalaspirantsto thepracticeofaccreditingalltheiractsintermsofprofit andlossatthepollsisalltoocommonplace.Andsincein thislandGodhasnotavote,itisnotalwayssurprisingthat Hisfeelingsaremostoftenignored.Ifitwerenotso,we shouldhavetheastonishingspectacleofsuchpoliticiansas professChristianbeliefstryingtotranslatethosebeliefsinto ordinary,practicalconductwithintheirvocations.We should,perhaps,seeparliamentarianswhoclaimtobeChristianfearfullesttheymightbywordordeedfosteramost un-Christianrefusaltoforgive.Wemightevenfindthem, bywordandexample,quietlyexhortingtheirmultitudinous admirerstotryandtreateventhelesserracesofthisglobe withtherespect,charity,andforbearanceduetothechildrenofGod.Or,attheveryleast,wemightfindthem maintainingadignifiedsilencewheretheydidnotpossess thecouragetoprofessopenlytheirbeliefintheessential equalityofallmankindundertheFatherhoodofGod.

Theworldto-dayisnotanindescribablypeacefulone, andaWhiteAustraliaisinmuchthesamepositionasabantaminapenofheavy-weightblackroosters.Insucha position,itiswelltotemperthedesiretoconsideronlyone's personalfeelings.Butevenifthiswerenotthecase,itis obvioustoallbuttheverychildishthatthewaytointernationalpeaceliesthroughinternationalgoodwill;andthat theinterestsofinternationalgoodwillarebetterservedby charitythanbycontempt.Theresponsibleauthoritiesmust administerthenation'slaws-thoughinthisregardarecent warningbythePopeconcerningtheadministrationbyCa'atholicsofunjustlawsshouldgiveuspause-butatleastthey shoulddosowithsomeregardforrealities.Whitethose inauthorityseektoincreasetheirpopularityamongconstituentsbyeternallyrakingovertheembersofbittermemoriesbetterforgotten,orbystirringupracialhatreds-ofall thingsthemostutterlyimbecile-tlikechancesofinternationalpeacearenegligible.Onlywhenwhole-heartedChristianleadersleadtheirpeopletoseeinthoseofothernations theirbrothersinGodwillpeacereignforlongerthanthe acutememoryofwar'shorror.AndtowardsthisincrediblydesirablegoaltherancorousattitudeoftheHon.Ministercanscarcelyberegardedasanotablecontribution.

A.:Thequestionyouaskcannotbeansweredstraightoffby yesorno.Manythingshave tobetakenintoconsideration. Ifgreatinconvenienceiscaused,thelawofabstinencedoes notbind.Take,forinstance, thisparticularcase,whichyou quote.Ifthemeatboughtwould

notkeepuntilthenextday,this couldmeanconsiderablelossto afamilywhichwasnotwelloff. Thatinitselfcouldexcusethe familyfromtheobligation. REASONSFORDRIFT.

Manymenhavehadahard timeofitthemselvesontheland andthelastthingthatthey wantisfortheirsonsanddaughterstoleadthesamekindof life.Inmanycases,witha largefamily,thereisnotthe landnorthemoneytopurchase moreforallthechildren,and A someofthemreverttothecity. Theverylimitedchoiceofhusbandsorwivesinthecountryis sometimesthereasonwhysome ofouryoungmenandwomen cometothecity.

Ifthepeaceteamscouldonly seethestreetsofmytown,a sampleoftensofthousandsof othertowns,filledwithdead, withthediscardeduniformsand littlecapsofBoyScoutsand students,witheverydoorburst openforlooting-thenneither wouldtheyhavebelievedthe shampleasoftheRedsfor peace,whichforthemmeant onlyawayofescapetowax strongerforrevenge.Ifthe Redslostafewhundredsoldiers inthosebraveassaultsonhigh wallsandpillboxes-itmatterednothingtothehighrankingofficers,whoenteredonly afterthefightwaswellover.

RECRUITS.

ForeverydeadRedsoldier theypickedtwoorthreestrong boysfromthetownspeople.Surrenderingsoldiersweretoldthey werenowintheRedArmy,like itornot.CuriousboysimpatienttoseethemarchingReds suddenlyhadapackthrustat them.Atthemarch'send,just astheywereabouttoreturn home,theyweregivenarifle anduniformwiththethreat, "NeverdesertthePeople'sArmy ofLiberation."Bearershadto befoundforthehundreds,or mosttimesthousandsofrifles capturedineachtown.Such tacticsofthelossofallAmericanarmstotheRedsfinallydecidedthenowwell-disillusioned AmericanagainsthelpingChina.

MARTYRDOM.

Duringmytwelveyearsin ChinaIhaddailyprayedferventlyformartyrdomatthe handsoftheReds.Itwasan hourlypossibilityalltheseyears. Thestorybeginsin1939when thevessel,SriMahaLetchmy, aCeyloneseshipoftheLanka Merchantfleet,wasintheBay of.BengalheadedforAkyab, Burma,100milesaway.A stormthrewthevesseloffits course,headingittowardCalcutta.Anotherandmorefierce stormdroveitintheopposite directiontowardMadras.

Asthestorm'sfuryincreased, thebewilderedsailorswanted tolightenthevesselby&lifting downthemasts,butthecaptain wouldnotapprove.WithRosaryinhand,hebadehismen recitetheirprayerswithfaith. HehimselfmadeavowtoSt. Anthony,whosestatuehekept inhiscabin,thatiftheywere savedfromthegalehewould haveapriestsayMassaboard shipintheSaint'shonour.

Anotherstormhittheship and,despitethefactthatits sailsweretorntotatters,itwas drivenintotheportofAkyab.

Itwasnotuntilayearlater thatthecaptainhadachanceto fulfilhisvow.HefinallyarrangedforapriesttoofferMass aboardthevesselonNovember 16,1940.Onthepreviousday, lavishpreparationsweremade bythesailorsasthevessellay atanchoroffAkyab.Thecaptain'scabinwasadornedwith flagsandflowers.Thestatue ofSt.Anthonystoodinthemiddleoftheimprovised,brightly illuminatedaltar.

AshorttimeagoIhadsomethingtosayaboutthelifeand workoftheAmericanpoet, Longfellow.NowIwantto sketchanentirelydifferentcharacterintheworldofpoetry:a manwhoisstillliving,onewho, ayearorsoago,receivedthe NobelPrizeforLiterature-T.S. Eliot.

ThomasStearnsEliot,probablythemostnotablepoetliving, isanAmericanbybirthandan Englishmanbyadoption.He wasborninSt.Louis,Missouri, onSeptember26,1888;hebecameaBritishsubjectin1927. Hischangeofnationalitywas duetohisgrowinginterestin theEnglishChurchandState. Afteraspiritualpilgrimage whichbeganwithhismeditationsinhisearlypoemsonthe instabilityofhumanlifeandsow ciety,hehasarrivedbytortuous pathsattheharmonyprovided byatraditionalreligiousculture;hehasbecomeanAngloCatholic.

Thedifficultyofattemptingto evaluatetheworkofcontemporarywritersismanifestinthe widedivergencesofcriticalreactiontoEliot'swork.Hereare afewexamples.Reviewing"The WasteLand"in"TheLondon Mercury,"in1923,J.C.Squire wrote:"Conceivably,whatis attemptedhere isafaithful transcriptofthepoet'swanderingthoughtswheninastateof eruditedepression.Agrunt wouldserveequallywell,"And later(1926),thesamecritic wrote(againof"TheWaste Land"):"Thekindestthingone cansupposeisthatheisexperi- mentingwithautomaticwriting. Eliothimself(likeArnold, Coleridge,BenJonson,Dryden andothers,hecombinesthe functionsofpoetandcritic)has saidthattoselectagoodnew poem,torespondproperlytoa newpoeticsituation,isthemost severetestofacritic.Itiseasy toillustrateitsseverityfrom thepastaswellasfromthepresent.Weallknowthewelcome whichWordsworthand,later, Keats,receivedatthehandsof thereviewers.Itwasmany yearsbeforeBrowningwonrecognition,andHopkins,who diedinthesameyearasBrowning(1889)washardlyheardof untiltwentyyearsago. Theplay,generally,wasquite successful.Itwasputoverenergetically,andatafasttempo. Itwaswellreceived.

TheupshotwasthatLt.WilliamSeawrightcametotheWilkins'householdonedaytoclaim hisbeloved.ConvenientlyRuth wasout;shewas,infact,arranginghermarriagetoAlbert Kummer,aratherstuffybanker.ThelieutenantwaswelcomedbyRuth's'parents,who, bothofthem,hadverylittle timeforAlbert,whomtheyregardedasa'sortofcongenital idiot.ThechoicebetweenAlbertandthedashinglieutenant wasnothardtomake.Then thesoulfulMiriamarrived,and letthecatoutofthebag,As thelieutenantwasonlyona coupleofdays'leave,itwasde-

AmongtheactorsMauriceGibsonandBobbieHalliganwere outstandingastheparents,Each wasadelightfulfoilforthe other.Thedryhumourofthe judgewasveryacceptable,and hischaracterisation, being stable,grewononeastheplay progressed.Nextmostlikeable portraitwasBobWorrier'sversionofAlbertKummer.Mr. Wornermadeanastonishingly gooddebutinstagework.He playedwithenormouszest, punchinghiswayacrossthe footlightsuntilhelandedsecurelyintheheartsoftheaudience.Itwasanall-Britishportrait,butitgotover.

MaureenO'Sullivanlookedher partoftheteen-ager,andacted itconvincingly.Shewasdeficientinvoice,howover.MaureenChild,asRuth,didnothave asimportantaroleasthetitle oftheplaysuggests.Mostof theactionrevolvesroundherroundhernamemorethananythingelse-butthesuccessofthe playisnotdependentonher. Whatshehadtodo,shedid morethanadequately,andshe lookedsuitablycharming.Roy CallardplayedLt.WilliamSeawrightwithcommendableease, MinorroleswerefilledbyIsobelScullin,JillnaHiggins,GordonGregson,andJohnTout. Thenameoftheproducerwas notgiven,butproductionwas veryattractive.

Mr.Hasluck,whoistheendorsedL.C.L.candidateforthe Curtinseat,saidthatthebasic differencesbetweenLiberalism andSocialismweretobefound intheemphasiswhichLiberals placedontheacceptanceofresponsibilitybytheindividual, andintheLiberalviewthat therewerewholefieldsofhumanactivitywhichtheState mustrespectandprotect,but shouldnotcontrol.Governmentsweretobetheservants

Everynowandagainthere cameanelection,whenthenationhadtodecidenotonlywho shouldgovernbutalsothegeneralprinciplesonwhichthe governmentofthecountry shouldbeconducted.Theforthcomingelectionwoulddecide whetherAustraliashouldmove towardssocialismornot,In politics,asinmakingajourney, thedirectioninwhichonewas facingwasjustasimportantas thestepsonewastaking.Only thedefeatoftheLabourGovernmentcouldturnthenation awayfromsocialismandmake itfaceagaintowardsthepoliticalpathbywhichundersuccessivegovernmentstheAustralian peoplecouldbuildasocietyin whichallcouldworktogether forthecommongood,rejecting theinhumanandirreligiousdoctrineofclasswarfare,maintainingsocialjusticeandrespecting individualfreedom.

Thusoneindispensibletestby whichtheChristianisationofa socialframeworkmaybejudged isthis:whatisthedistributionof ownershipwithinthecommunity?Andoneindispensibletest ofwhetherapoliticalpartyis alliedwiththecauseofChristiansocialjusticeisthis:what emphasisdoesitplaceuponindividualownershpofthemeans ofproducngwealth?

MARXIANEVASION.

IncontradictionoftheChristialideal,KarlMarxpropoundedatheorywhichinnoway representedasolutionofthesocialproblem,butwasratheran attempttoconcealtheproblem byaruthlessuniformity-much asifawiseandbeneficentgovernmentproposedtoalleviate theunquestionablesocialinferiorityofthemaimedand limblessbyreducingallitscitizenstothatunhappystate(all, thatis,excepttheplannersof thisenlightenedmove).Apart fromthefadthattheMarxian solutionoffendsthefacultyof reason-or,tobemoreprecise, isnothingmorethangibberingidiocy-wecannotadmititbecauseitflatlydeniesthefact,of Christianrevelation,thatManin thesightofGodismq'eprecious
