ItisnOttotakepartinpoliticalskirmishesthatwe praisetheeffortsofMr.CalwellandhisDepartmentforthe vigourandsuccessoftheireffortstostockAustraliawith newblood.Trulytheover-allexcellenceoftheimmigrationpolicyhasbeenslightlymarredinminoraspectsbya quiteunnecessaryracialintolerance,butthemorecommon criticismofourfellowcitizensisequallyunfounded.The claimthatNewAustraliansstfbuldnotbeadmittedtothis countryuntilhomeshavebeenfoundforallAustraliansignoresthelargerandmorevitalquestionthatunlessthedepletedlife-stocksofthiscountrycanbebuiltupinacomparativelybriefspaceoftime,weshallnotbeabletohold thecountry.Surelyitisbetterthatwerisktheinconvenienceofageneralhousingshortagethanthatwe'jeopardiscournationalsurvival.Itisalsopertinenttoreflect thataverysmallpercentageofthenewarrivalsareable tosecurehomestothedenialofnative-bornAustralians.In additiontobeingquarteredinmilitarycampsandtents, thepreponderanceofthesehomelesspeoplearevirtuallyindenturedlabour,engagedoftunattractivetasks.Admittedlytheirlotisvoluntarilychosen,butweatleastshouldnot beoutdonebytheircheerfulnessunderhardship.

Itis,ofcourse,notenoughtobringthousandsofnewcomerstoourcountryeachyearandthenleavethemto theirowndevicesinthepioushopethatsomehowtheywill absorbourwayoflifeandbecomegoodAustraliancitizens.Theremustbeconsciousandperseveringeffortsin thisdirectiononthepartofall.The,DepartmentofImmigrationendeavourstoteachthemEnglishandtohelp themintheiremploymentandotherdifficulties.Butthere isatremendousamounttheindividualcandobywayof personalcontacttomakethesepeoplefeeltheyarereally welcomeandwanted.Manyofthemareyoungpeoplewho haveseenthemostdegradinghorrorsofwar;theyhave knownnohomelife,butonlytheinhumanregimentation ofconcentrationcamps;theyknowlittleofourlanguageand customs,andtheyhavenofriends.Wecanandshould helpthemtolearnourtongue,andofferthemourfriendship andthehospitalityofourhomes.Otherwisewewilldrive themtoformforeignblocsandtoremainforageneration outsideourwayoflife.

OnCatholicstherefallsaspecialobligation,andthat istodowhattheycaninhelpingtopreservetheFaithof themanymigrantswhoareCatholics.AlreadytheMigrationAssociationandtheLegionofMaryareactivelyat workinthereceptioncamps.Butagreatdealmorehasto bedonewhentheNewAustralianstakeupworkinvarious partsoftheState.ItisherethattheindividualCatholic maybypersonalcontactassistthenewcomertoenterinto theparochialorganisationoftheChurchandtoperseverein thepracticeoftheFaith.Inthisrespectwehavealot tolearnfromthepast,andthespiritualdefectionoflarge numbersofItalianswhomigratedhereinyearsgoneby cannotleaveuswithanysenseofcomplacency.Wepray eachdayforthepropagationoftheFaith,andinparticular fortheconversionofAustralia.Ifthelargenumbersof NewAustralianswhoareCatholiccanbemaintainedinthe solidarityoftheFaith,theymaywellbeamajorfactorin theaccomplishmentofthatapostolicaim.Itisforeach Catholictodohissharetowardsthatend.

Inmyrecentvisittosomeof thecampsofexpelleesinWesternEurope,itwasveryeasyto seethematerialtragedyoftheir lives.Thehardshipandsufferingwasevidentoneveryside, andyet,despiteallthis,Iwas amazedatthetremendousmoral strengthandthehome-making capacityoftheexpelleewomen.

Thrustoutoftheirhomesand farmsintheSudetanareaof Czechoslovakia,SilesiaandEast Prussia,withtheirchildrenand oldpeople,andwithorwithout theirhusbands,thesewomen foundthemselvesunloadedinto almostuninhabitablebarracks, barnsandhalf-destroyedhotels. Thebarracksonceservedforthe unfortunateprisonersofwaror slavelabourersinGermany.

Itishardtoimagineintime ofpeacethatinnocentfamiliesmillionsofwomen,childrenand aged-wouldbecrowdedobscenelyintotheseplaces,which weretheshameoftheNaziregime.

CATTLE.

Isawswarmsofpeopleinthe campsin1945,rightafterthey leftthecattlecars,thatbrought themfromtheirancestralhomes.

Isawtheagonyofthemothers astheytriedtokeepalivethe sparkoflifeindyingbabies,or astheysatoverthestrawbed ofafeverishboyorgirl.

Againin1949,Ivisitedthe campsandfoundthesamepeoplelivinginthesamebuildings thatneverwereintendedto

househumanbeings.Thecamps nowarecalled"barrackhomes"(Wohnungs-Barracken). Peoplewerenolongerlivingen masse.Throughsuperhuman effort,thebarrackshadbeen dividedintoseparatehomes. Partitionsofeverykindhad beenerected,andeachfamily hasitsownseparatehome,even thoughitmightbeonlyone roomtoserveasbedroom,kitchen,livingroomandwash room.

HOME-MAKERS.

OverandoveragainIwas amazedatwhatthewomenwere abletodowiththeserooms. Paintbrightenedrough,unfinishedwalls,andpictureswere placedstrategicallytocover cracksorunsightlydefects. Woodenlampstandswere brightenedbyhome-madelamp shadesofpaintedpaper.Frankly,Iwouldh'tknowhowa womankeepsaroomtidywhen itconsistsofsevenbeds-two andthreedeckers-atable,a primitivestove,acoupleof chairsandclothingboxesfor eachmemberofthefamily.I supposeitmerelymeantthatthe womenworkedallday,and everydaytotidyupafterthe childrencameinandout,washed,ate,anddidtheirstudies.

Ivisitedawomanwhoescapedmassdeportationsbyleavinghernativevillagewithher eightcllikldrenandwalkingto Poland.Shedidthisbecause sheknewherhusbandhadalreadybeendeportedtoSiberia, andshewantedtosaveherboys andgirlsfromasimilarfate. HernameisMrs.BarbaraWalt, andsheandherchildrenlivein aone-room"home"inanexpelleebarracksinthedioceseof Paderborn.Whenshereached Poland,Mrs.Waltwasexpelled intotheRussiansectorofBerlin.ShewasspottedimmediatelyasaRussiancitizenand wasmarkedforanotherdeportation,thistimebacktosome unknowndestinationinRussia. Fleeingwithhereightchildren intotheBritishsector,shepersuadedthemilitaryauthorities toacceptherasapoliticalrefugee.Theywereloadedon toanArmyplaneandtakento theBritishzoneofGermany.

Theplightoftheagedwomen amongtheexpelleescouldbe thesubjectofabook.Itis enoughtosaythattheseold womenandoldmenwereherdedintocattlecarsanddumped outascallouslyaswereallthe otherexpellees.Hundredsof dampcellars,bunkers,orairraidsheltersarenowthehomes ofexpelledoldpeople.Sometimes,onebarrackinacampis setasidefortheaged.Thereone seesoldwomenbusywith theirbeads,ordoingsomesewingorknitting.Often,they havenoknowledgeofthe whereaboutsoftherestoftheir families:oftentheyknowthat theyarealreadydead.So manyofthemaregentleand withoutbitterness.Somanyof themawaitdeathasablessed andhappydeliverance.

AsaCatholicnewspaperman ofmanyyears'experience,Iam consciousofthefactthatwhile ' theCatholicChurch"makes news,"easierthananyotherreligiousgroup,itgetsanexceptionally"badpress"ineveryday life.Wearesadlyindifferent tothepowerforgoodthatexistsinmost'newspapersand magazines.

ItisveryseldomthataCatholicpriestisseenorwell knowninmostnewspaper offices,yetnon-Catholicministersareconstantlyinandoutof secularnewspaperswithwellpreparednewsitemsornewsrequestsofimportancetothem.In thefaceofconstantattacks,Catholicsmaintainanaloofness thatamountsalmosttotimid elusiveness.This,Ithink,is amistakewhichaSt.Paul wouldnevermake.Iamsure thatSt.Paulto-daywouldbe usingeverymodernmediumfor communicationthatthemindof Man,withGod'sblessing,had unfolded.Hewoulduseradio, television,motionpicturesand thepress,happythattheseinstrumentsforamodernapostolateareathand.

LET'SDOOURPART.

ToomanyCatholics,bothlaymenandclergy,taketheattitude,Iamafraid,thattheDiv_ ineguidanceoftheChurchwill takecareofeverything.We haveaDivineassurancethat GodwillbewithusasCatholics untiltheendoftime,butinthe meantimethereisalotofwork whichneedstobedonebyus, with,ofcourse,God'shelp.

EveryCatholicpastorand everyCatholicparishshouldbe onfriendlytermswiththeir localsecularnewspapers.They shouldmakeiteasyforthese newspaperstogetCatholicnews andtheyshouldmakeaconstantefforttokeepsecular newspapersinformedwithrespecttoCatholicmatters.Avoid alwaisthe"chipontheshoulder"attitudeandavoidalways thenotionthatmisunderstandingisalwaysmalice.Catholics arenotsufficientlyawareofthe factthatmanyProtestantsare actuallyfearfulofanythingCatholic,principallybecausethey havenoknowledgeofCatholics orCatholicmatters.Anewspaperreporter,evenaCatholic one,hasdifficultyincovering Catholicnews,butheaccepts thedifficulties.Anon-Catholicnewspaperreporteroftenis permanentlydiscouragedifheis rebuffedeitherbyclergyor laity.

Thepurposeofagoodpress relationshipbetweentheCatholicChurchandthesecularnewspapersisnotthecompilationof parishscrap-booksinwhich

manynamesappearinprintto pleasethepersonalvanityof manyindividuals.Itistomake theCatholicChurchproperly understood.MonsignorFulton Sheenstatedineffectthatfew personshatetheCatholicChurch assheis,butastheythinkshe is. Thatistrue.Itisthe purposeofagoodpressrelationshiptochangethissituation.

TRYCHARITY.

Itisalwaysagoodruleto presumethatamistakeabout theCatholic.Churchisanhonestone,becauseevenwherethe mistakeisnothonest,acharitableattitudetowardabigotis impressive.Ifanewspapermistakenlystatesa Catholic

friends,notforhimself,butfor Christ.Thereisnoinstitution intheworldto-daymoreaccessibletothepress,normorecooperativewiththepress,than theVatican.IfthePopethinks itisimportant,nottooverevaluatetheparochialattitudeof mind,thenitoughttobeconsideredimportantbylaymen andclergyelsewherenotto over-evaluateit.

Editingapaperisapleasant thing.Ifitcontainstoomuch politicalmatter,peoplewon't haveit;ifitistoolittle,they won'thaveit.Ifthetypeis toolarge,itdoesn'tcontain enoughreadingmatter;itthe typeistoosmalltheycan'tread it.Iftelegraphicreportsare Catholicsare,forthemostpart,aninarticultitegroup. Theywieldaverysmallinfluence,comparedtowhatthey mightwield,iftheysoughttodoso.Theprobablecauses aremany.Laymen,whoquiteproperlydefertotheclergy inmanymatters,defertothemintoomanythingswhere itisnotnecessaryorevendesirable. position,asignedlettertothe editorinacourteous,friendly andcorrectivespiritisalwaysin order.Don'twaitfortheBishopofthediocesetowriteit. Writeityourselfasalaymanor apastor,makingsure,ofcourse, thatyouyourselfareright.

NotlongagoaCatholicreporteronourstaffwrotealettertoeachofthepastorsofCatholicchurchesinourarea,settingforththedesirabilityofCatholicnewsandinvitingitssubmission.Monthshaveelapsed andasfarasthereporterknows noneoftheletterswasanswered. Notoneacknowledgmentwas received.Notonenewsstory wassubmitted.ItisprettydifficultforeitherCatholicornonCatholicreporterstobevery sympatheticunderthecircumstanceswithCatholiccomplaints fromtimetotimethatthesecularpressisnotco-operativein handlingCatholicnews.

IfeveryintelligentCatholic inthecountrywouldresolveto writealetternowandthencorrectingmisinformationabouta Catholicpositiononthepartof somenewspaperormagazine, muchofthemisunderstanding aboutCatholicswoulddisappear.Ifeverypastorwould co-operatewiththesecularpress inprovidingtheproperkindof newsforthepress,agreatdeal moregoodwouldbedone.

THEPOPE'SEXAMPLE.

Themodernnewspaperdoes nothavethetimeorthefacilitiestocovereverynewshappening.Thatiswhymanypress consciousorganisationsto-day successfullyemploymethodsof seeingtoitthatnewspapersare providedwithnewsstorieswell prepared.

They,weregiven15daysat thetitheInwhichtogotothree smallconventsinRumaniaorto returntotheirfriends.The nunsunanimouslyrefusedtogo totheconventswhentheydiscoveredtheywouldhavetolive undersuperiorsappointedbythe Communistauthorities.Theconventscouldhaveaccommodated onlyalittleover100ofthe nuns,Informationofthesedevelopmentswasreceivedhere bytheOrientalChurchInformationService.

TheInformationServicealso learnedthattheregimehas takenpoliceactiontooustthe remainingCatholicnunsofthe ByzantineRitefromtheirconvents.TheByzantineRiteCatholicChurchinRumaniawas declarednon-existentbytheregimeinadecreeissuedDecernber1oflastyear.

Theactingwiselikethepar- son'segg-goodinparts.As Steve,ayoungactorwhomI don'trememberseeingbeforeRayMenmuir-putupanadequateperformance,Thepart didn'tstrikemeasbeingpar- ticuarlvdifficulttoplay(being blind,hegotroundlikeanautoton).butIdon'twanttodamn himwithfaintpraise. Idoubt whetheranyoneelsecouldhave madeabetterjobofit.Whether thefaultwasintheacting,or whethertheplaywrightisto blame,I'munabletodetermine; butitseemedtomethatsomeone shouldhavewrungmoresym- pathyoutofusforamanin Steve'sposition.Thecharacterisationwasnotclear-cut. Stevewasblind,andStevehad beennearexhaustioninthejun- gle,andStevehad"squibbed"it inthefaceoftheenemy;butI stildon2tknowwhatsortoffellowStevereallywas.Perhaps Ishouldblametheproducerfor this.Anyhow.IthoughtSteve wasanunsatisfactorysortof character.
