AmagazineeditedbyFather Craigforthepromotionofreligiousinstructioninthehomeis nowbeingpublishedinmonthly editionsofover7,000copies. Korea'sCatholicdailynewspaperhasacirculationof73,000.

Accordingtothelateststatistics,16,255persons,including 3,818adults,werebaptizedin southernKoreaduringthepast yearand60newstudentswere admittedtothemajorandminor seminariesinSeptember,bringingthetotalupto240.Ten Catholicmiddleschoolshave beenestablishedinsouthern Koreasincetheendofthewar. Thepec,secutionoftheCatholicChurchinCzechoslovakia convincinglydemonstratesonceagainthattheChurch cannotbetrulyfreeunderatotalitarianregime.Byits verynature,sucharegimeseekstodominateeventhetiniest cellsofthecountry'ssocialstructureandtoconcentrateall powerintheState.Consequlently,thetotalitarianrulers cannottolerateanyorganismwhichanywhere-evenina purelyspiritualfield-mightbeindependentoftheircontrol. AfterarevolutionarychangeinCzechoslovakia'spolitical structure,broughtaboutbythecoupd'etatinFebruary, 1948,thevictoriousCommunistsimmediatelystartedto purgethecountryofallforcesthatfailedtoconformwith theCommunist-totalitarianpatternofthings.Theyuseda specialtechniquetoachievethisend:thetechniqueofpouringthewaterofCommunistdoctrineintotheoldurnsof nationaltraditions.Inmanyfieldstheypreservedoldforms whilegivingthemradicallynewcontents.Thepurposewas obvious:tocreatetheimpressionamongthepeopleathome andpublicopinionabroadthatthechangeswerenotfundamentalandwerecarriedoutinaccordancewiththecountry's traditions.

ThistechniqueofdeceptiOnalsoguidedtheCommunists intheirwaragainsttheChurch.Apreliminarymovein thiswarwasmadeduringtheFebruary,1948,crisis,when theso-calledrevisionofthelandreformwasalsoappliedto Churchholdings.Thehiddenpurposeofthismeasurewas this:todeprivetheChurchofallherpossessionsinorderto makeherentirelydependentonStatesubsidiesand,inthis way,subjecthertothestronginfluenceofthecountry's rulers.Afterthispreparatorystephadbeentaken,representativesoftheChurchwereinvitedtonegotiatewiththe GovernmentonState-Churchrelations.TheCommunist rulersplannedtousethesalariespaidbytheStatetopriests astheirprincipalbarterobjectinthesenegotiationsinorder toobtainconcessionsfromtheChurch.Itwasatthattine thattheCatholicBishopsbecamethespecialtargetofCommunistattacks.Theseattackswerelaunchedasamoveof psychologicalwarfareaimedatweakeningthespiritand underminingtheprestigeoftheChurchnegotiatorsand,at thesametime,splittingtheranksoftheCatholicclergy: ontheonehandthe'loyalandpatrioticpriests"willingto "goforwardwiththepeople,"andontheother,"theenemies ofthepeople'sdemocracy"andofsocialreforms,whotook theirordersfromabroad.

Unfortunately,forthePragueregime,theCzechoslovak Bishopshavebeenatalltimes,since1945,trulynonpoliticalpersonalities,devotingtheniselvestoecclesiastical mattersonlyandnotmeddlinginpolitics.Ofcourse,they areandalwayshavebeengoodCzechoslovakpatriots,but theywerenotpartymen.Theyabstainfromallpolitical activity,andscrupulouslyfollowthedirectionsofcanon law.However,intheviewoftheCommunistrulers,nothing iseasierthantoindicttheiropponentsofpoliticaland criminaloffences.Thearrestsofmanypriestsonavariety oftrumped-upcharges,theincreasinglyclosesupervisionby spiesoftheiractivitiesinsideandoutsidetheChurch, demonstratethedeterminationofthePragueCommunist regimetocarryitsfightagainsttheChurchtothebitterend. NomeanswillbeleftunusedinordertoweakentheallegianceoftheprieststotheirBishopsandtoshaketheloyalty ofthelaitytoCatholicprinciples.But,infact,theCatholic clergyhavealreadywontheirvictory.Virtuallynodefectionshaveoccurred,andtheChurchhasonlybeenstrengthenedbythepersecutions.TheregimeevenhadtosuppressopenrevoltsofCatholicpeoplewhodefendedtheir priestswhentheyweretobetakentoprison.Non-Catholics, too,aswellasluke-warmCatholics,arelookingupwith admirationtotheCatholicclergyandhaverevisedtheir formerattitudetowardtheChurch.Theyrecognisenowthe truthoftheoldsloganofCzechoslovakia'sCatholics, "ChurchandMotherland,"andarewillingtoadmithow deeplyrootedhasbeenthesenseofdutyandthewillingness ofsacrificeamongthecountry'spriests.

InPalmyraparish,whichis dedicatedtoOurLadyofFatima,wefeelthatwehavea specialreasontorespondtoOur Lady'srequestsandtoheedher warnings.Fullyconsciousof thefactthattruedevotionto Marydoesnotconsistin'mere externaldisplay,nevertheless,as aspurtoourdevotion,asan outwardmanifestationofour love,andbecauseMaryherself desiresit,wehaveparticipated inthoseexternalactsthroughouttheyear.Sixtimesayear, onthe13thofeachmonthfrom MaytoOctober,specialdevotionswereheldinherhonour, andontheheadofherbeautiful

banners,followedbythegirls fromSantaMariaandvisitors andothermembersoftheparish,ledtheprocession.Then camethelargestatueofOur LadyofFatima,carriedonthe shoulderoffourexecutivemembersoftheH.N.S.,totheaccompanimentoftheHymnof OurLadyofFatima,andprecededbythemanyvisiting priests.Atthebottomofthe stepsthecadetsfromAquinas stoodatthesalute,andformed theguardofhonourthroughout theprocession.Membersofthe H.N.S.andallothermenthen tooktheirplaces.Theprocessionthenwendeditsway throughtherecentlybeautified

TherehasbeennointerruptionofchurchservicesinSinsiang.However,obstaclesare growingintheruralareas.In somevillages,Catholicshave beenprohibitedfromgoingto church,prayinginpublic,or havingcontactwithpriests. PriestsinSinsianghavenot beengiventravelpermitsto visitoutlyingmissions.

ReportsfromTsingtaostate thatfiveChineseprieststhere arecarryingonpastoralwork withoutmuchinterference.Convertclassesarecontinuing,the missionisstillissuingitspublicationsandattendanceatMass isdescribedasverygood.However,theReddemandfortaxes makesitimprobablethatthe missioncanreopenitsschools.

statuewasplacedacrownof roses,symbolicofourloveof herwhoisQueenofthemost HolyRosary, A24-hourcontinuousRosary frommidnighttomidnightduringwhichthemenoftheparish tookturnsallduringthenight, andthewomenandchildren throughouttheday,wasyetanotherproofofMary'spowerand influenceoverthesoulsofher devoutclients.Needwewonder thenthatthefinalmanifestation ofthepeople'sdevotiononSunday,16thinst.,shouldhavebeen amagnificenttributetoaloving motherfromhergratefulchildren.

Inglorioussunshine,theparish,withfewexceptions,turned outtohonourtheirPatroness andtheirQueen.Many,too, fromneighbouringparishes cametopaytheirrespects.As thechurchcouldnotaccommodateall,theHolyNameSociety andthemenandboysofthe parishformedaguardofhonour outside.

At3.30sharp,theprocession began;ledbythecross-bearer andaltarboys,itfileddownthe aisleofthechurch.TheSacred HeartSodalityandtheChildren ofMarymarchingbehindtheir

grounds,alljoiningintheRosaryontheway.Thestatue havingbeenplacedontheplatformpreparedforit,achild fromtheconventschool(representingthepeoplepresent) placedacrownofbeautiful rosesonitshead.

VeryRev.FatherO'Byrne, O.M.I,,thendeliveredamost impressiveaddresstothelarge andappreciativegathering.The actofconsecrationtotheImmaculateHeartwasthenrecited. BenedictionoftheMostBlessed Sacrament,givenbyRightRev. MonsignorGoody,endedaceremonythatwasafittingconclusiontoourhumbleeffortssince MaytodohonourtoOurLady oftheRosaryofFatima.

Tothevisitors,andespecially MonsignorGoodyandthemany priestswhohonoureduswith theirpresence,weexpressour appreciation.
