TOKYO,Oct,8.-LegalisedabortiontookmorelivesinoccupiedJapanduringthefirstsevenmonthsofthisyearthan theatomicbombsdidinHiroshimaandNegasakitogether.

FromJanuarytoJuly,inclu-fantsinthewombisauthorised sive,93,863abortionswereperformedwithfulllegalsanction, accordingtofigurescompiledby theJapaneseMinistryofWelfare.(Deathsresultingfrom theatomicbombingofHiroshimaandNagasakiin1945 totalled88,367,accordingtothe U.S.AtomicBombCasualty Commissionhere.)

Therecordoflegalisedabortionsisadmittedlyincomplete. TheWelfareMinistryreportedlyestimatesthetotalnumberas morethan300,000inthesevenmonthperiod.

Thepaperposestwoleading questions:

"Willanycountrysetupa definitemoralstandardwhich willbeadheredtonomatter whatthetemptationorprovocationtodootherwise?Willany countrysubordinateitsmilitary standardstoadefinitemoral standard?

"Inaworldinwhichmaterial standardsarevaluedabovespiritualohes,wefearthatfew countrieswillbepreparedtoact fromspiritualmotives.Fear maypreventtheuseofthe bomb,fearofreprisals.Butno country,probably,willbanits usebecausesuchusewouldbe morallywrong."

The"CatholicTimes"mentionsquestionsputbyAmerican journaliststotheAmericanNationalSecurityCouncilandso farunanswered.Twoofthe questionsare:

Istheobjectivethetotaldestructionoftheenemybythe annihilationofitspopulation andtheobliterationofitscities? Orisittobringaboutanearly surrenderbyachievingintermediateobjectives,suchastheparalysingoftheenemy'stransport andthecuttingoffofvitalwar supplies?

LONDON,Oct.8(NC).-AccordingtoreliablePolishinformantshere,theCommunistsin Polandarebecomingincreasinglyanxiousabouttheattitude ofmostPolishstudentstoCommunismandtoRussia.

OneCommunistleader,says thisinformant,hasdiscovered withhorrorthatinCracowUniversity428studentsarestudy-ingEnglish,whileonlynineare studyingRussian.

Otherstatisticsshowthatout of2,768studentsofthehumanisticfacultyinCracow,222are membersSoftheCommunistdominatedStudents'Union,but aonlyfouractuallybelongtothe party.Ontheotherhand,the sodalitieshavean"alarming" influence.

BONN,Sept.29.-InKonrad Adenauer,theGermanpeople havechosenoneofthemostdistniguishedCatholicsoftheir countrytobeatthehelmofthe newWesternState.Alawyer byprofession,Dr.Adenauerhas playedavitalpartinpubliclife forthepast30years.Now74 yearsold,heisasvigorousas manyayoungerman.Since 1917,andforanuninterrupted periodof16years,hehasbeen MayorofCologne,oftencalled the"GermanRome,"thegreat metropolisof spectaculartheRhine,whose riseinthe'twentieswasdueprimarilytohis initiativeandability.Foralmostthesamelengthoftime,he presidedoverthepre-Nazi CouncilofStateofPrussiaand hadconsiderableinfluencein nationalaffairsasoneofthe mostprominentmembersofthe nowdefunctCatholicCentre Party.

WhentheNaziscameto powerin1g33,itwasaforegone conclusionthatDr.Adenauer wouldbepersonanongrata.He hadbeentoooutspokenagainst them,andhewasnotamanto compromisehisCatholicconvictions.Thenewrulersdeposed himfromofficeandevenbanned himfromhisnativeCologne. Lateron,theGestapoarrested himtwice,andhebarelyman-

LONDON,Oct.6(NC).-Ber- nardSullivan,notedCatholic tradeunionleaderandvicechairmanoftheLondonCounty Council,whohasjustreturned fromathree-weektourof Spain,writesinthe"Catholic Herald"here:

"Thereseemstohavebeena transfertotheworkersof wealth,whichhasgiventheman airofindependenceandconfidenceinthefuture,whiletheir participationinthebuildingof workers'homesandhospitals,andthewelfareserviceSthey helptomanage,isgivingthem anexperiencethatwillfitthem onedaytoshareinademocraticgovernmentoftheirown country."

Mr.Sullivan,astaunchLaboursupporter,admitsitwas "withcertainprejudices"thathe acceptedtheinvitationbythe SpanishSyndicatestovisitthe countryandinvestigateatfirst handtheconditionsobtaining there.

"Iquestionedbothworkers anddirectors,"hesays,"about theindustrialorganisations knownasSyndicates.There arenotradesunionsinSpain similartotheBritishtype.

"ThroughoutmyvisitIalwaysaskedtheworkersandthe employersseparatelyfortheir viewsoftheSyndicates,and everywherefoundtheworkers moreenthusiasticthantheemployers.

"ThebesttributeIgotfrom anemployerwasthatbefore Francotherewasalwaysstrife andhunger,butnowtherewas peaceandbread...."

TwoofMr.Sullivan'sfinal commentssumuphisviewof thepoliticalsituation:

"TheviewthroughoutSpain isthatFrancohassetupanorganisationthatwouldbecapable offormingthebasisofanew government.

"Thereisnosignthatanotherpoliticalpartytogovern Spainisemerging,buttheSyn- dicatesareaforcethatmay modifythepresenttotalitarian politicalpartywhichisthepresentGovernmentofSpain."

Sevenof13membersofthe newCabinetareCatholics.Nevertheless,Dr.Adenauerwillnot haveeasysailing,forhisgovernmentisbesetnotonlybythe violentoppositionoftheSocialists,whosepoliciesremainfundamentallyasanti-Churchas theyalwayshavebeen,butalso bymanyadivergenceofviews withinhisownparty,which oftenissplitintoarightanda leftwing,aswastheCatholic CentrePartybeforetheNazi period.However,Dr.Adenauer isamanofunusualskilland greatpoliticalexperience.No doubt,hisfaithwillguidehim inweatheringmanyastorm. Almostone-thirdofthemembershipofthenewWestGermanParliamentconsistsofCatholics,someofthemnotbelongingtoDr.Adenauer'sparty.

JapsCopyNazisUnder U.S.Patronage

TOKYO,Sept,30.-Japan's legislatorshavere-enacteda "eugenics"lawthatcloselyparallelsaNazidecreeof1933and goesevenfurther.Thoughall Japaneselegislationissubject toapprovalofOccupationauthorities,GeneralMacArthur's headquartersheretooknoactiononthisBill,regardingitas "strictlyaJapanesematter."So Iwastoldintheparliamentary divisionofSCAP(Supreme CommandfortheAlliedPowti withwhichtheJapanese liaisonofficemustclearallproposedlegislation.

PassedbytheDiet-Japan'sParliament-onMay22,and nowinforce,theEugenicsProtectionLaw(1)authorisessterilisationbycompulsionaswell asbyconsent;(2)givesunprecedentedlatitudetoabortionists;and(3)setsupgovernmentofficeswhichpromoteartificialbirthcontrol.

TheNaziinfluenceissuggestedbythesterilisationclauses, evenintheopeningwords:"The objectofthislawistoprevent theincreaseofinferiordescendants.."

Thelawpermitsadoctorto performasterilisationoperation athisowndiscretion,withthe consentofthepersoninquestionandthespouse,ifeither partyhasanyofthementalor bodilydiseasesthattheLaw-not alwaysaccurately-listsashereditary.Furthermore,thedoctorisauthorisedandevenobliged(accordingtoaWelfare Ministryofficial)toinforma EugenicProtectionCommission whenapatienthasoneofthese ailments.TheCommissioncan thenorderthepatienttobe sterilised,evenagainsthiswill Thepatientmayappealtoa CentralEugenicsCommissionin Tokyo,andfromitsdecisionto aTokyocourt.Ifthecourtdecidesthathisailmentisproved, heistobesterilisedforcibly.In suchacasethedoctOrwhooperatescollectsfromthegovernment4,000yen(about£5)for operatingonaman,halftbs. amountforawoman.

SuchistheJapanlaw,passed firstin1940,whenNaziinflu-

encewashighhere,thenreenactedin1948withexplicit provisionsforabortion,andreenactedagainthisyearwith birthcontrolclausesadded. TheNazidecreethatthe Japanlawseeminglyimitates wasissuedonJuly14,1933,six monthsafterHitlercameto power.Itprovidedthat"to hinderthespreadofhereditary diseases,"adoctormightsteriliseapatientwhorequestedit. Aspecialcommitteenamedby theGermanHierarchytostudy theexpelleesituationhasjust releasedastatementbearingout thealarmexpressedbytheBishops.The.statementemphasisesthattheexpelleeswere forcedintowesternGermany,

whichhadlostmorethan2,500,000homesastheresultofair raidsandotheractsofwar.

AstronglywordedcondemnationoftherevisedMadrasEducationBillhasbeenissuedhere byArchbishopLouisMathias,of Madras,PresidentoftheCatholicEducationalCouncilofSouth India.

Theprovisionsofthenew EducationBillaresomewhat lessharshthanthoseoftheold one,whichwastheobjectofrepeatedprotestsbyChristian bodies.However,thenewBill wouldstillpermittheprovincial Governmenttoseizeanyprivateschool,allitsfurnishings andendowmentiftheEducation Ministryshoulddecidethatthe privateschoolwasunder"inefficientmanagement."This seizurewouldnotadmitofany appeal.

ArchbishopMathiaslabelled thisrequisitionclauseas"wrong inprincipleandtyrannicalin practice."

"InthecaseofCatholicinstitntions,"theArchbishoppointedout,"theownerofaschdol isthebishopofthedioceseor thesuperiorofareligiousOrder orCongregation.Themanages ofaschoolisnottheowner,'but amemberofthedioceseorof thecongregationappointedby theBishoporreligioussuperior.

AftertheformerMadrasEducationMinisterandframerof theoriginalBill,AvinashilinghamChettiar,wasoustedfrom office,Christiansherebelieved thattheobjectionablefeatures oftheBillwouldbedroppedentirely.However,itwaslater discoveredthatMr.Chettiar servedaschairmanofthecommitteeentrustedwithamendingtheBilltomakeitunobjectionable.

CampbellSwinton'sscheme whichhadbeenproposedas eralyas1908. Forthepastsixteenyearsor moreDr.McGeehasbeenattachedtotheResearchDepartmentofElectricandMusical IndustriesLtd.,generallyknown asE.M.I.Duringthattimehe wascloselyconnectedwiththe developmentoftheEmitron Camera,statedtobethemost startlingtelevisionapparatusin theworld,andoneofthemain reasonswhyBritishtelevision hasadvancedsorapidly.

In1938,Dr.McGeewassent toAmericaasEnglishrepresentativetothebigRadioConventionthere.Onhiswayouthe visitedSydney,andwhilehere addressedtheConventionofthe InstitutionofRadioEngineers (Australia)intheGreatHall, SydneyUniversity.

Duringthewaryears,Dr. McGee'sworkwasconcerned withthedevelopmentofelectronicinfra-redimageconverters,andtheinstrumentswith whichtheywereused.There mustbefewex-servicemenwho foughtoverseeswhowillnot realisethatadebtofgratitude

LONDON,Sept.29(NC).-At therequestofHisEminence BernardCardinalGriffin,ArchbishopofWestminster,theNationalBoardofCatholicWomen herehasundertakensocialwork amongCatholicsoftheEuropeanVoluntaryWorkersinBritain.

Mrs.DouglasWoodruff,wife oftheeditorof"TheTablet," explainingthefunctionsofthis service,said: "Wewanttohelpthembreak downthebarbedwiremental.. itythatsomanyofthemfindso difficulttoshakeoffafterso manyyearsspentbehindphysicalbarbedwire."

Withthecessationofhostilities,Dr.McGeewassentoverto theContinenttointerviewGermanscientistsandtoobtain fromthemasmuchinformation ashecould, Amagnificentjobwasdone duringtheOlympicGameswith theC.P.S.Emitron,usedin conjunctionwithanewand compactmobileunit.

Whenthehistoryoftelevision comestobewritten,weshould rememberthatitssuccessinits initialstageswasdue,inno smallway,tothevision,foresight,andhardworkofasmall butdeterminedgroupofmen.

Dr.McGeehasmanyand variedinterestsoutsidethefield ofscience-thoughhehaslittle opportunitytopursuethem.Yet inspiteofthearduousnature ofhiswork,JimMcGeehasalwaysfoundthetimetobea veryactiveandenthusiastic memberoftheUniversityof LondonCatholicGraduateSociety,andtheUniversityCatholicFederation(PaxRomana). Bylivinguptotheprinciplesinculcatedinhisearlytraining, JmiMcGeehasprovedthatscientificresearchandCatholic idealsarenotincompatible.

ThedaymaynotbefardistantwhentelevisionisintroducedintoAustralia-letus thenrememberaquiet,unassuming,butoutstandinglybrilliantyoungAustralianscientist whohelpedmould"theshapeof thingstocome"-Dr.JamesD. McGee,

CatholicslivinginanydistrictwherethereareEuropean VoluntaryWorkers,sheadded, areaskedtowritetheneworganisation,calledForeignCatholics'Service,tostateinwhat capacitytheyarewillingtohelp inmakingthelivesofthesepeoplealittlehappier.

"Fromoccasionallyinviting someofthemtotea,togiving Englishlessonsorgivingthem anopportunityofmeetingBritishpeople-allofferswillbe gratefullyreceivedbyus,"Mrs. Woodruffsaid, "Wemustrememberthat, amongthesepeoplewhoare workinginfactoriesaresomany whobelongtotheprofessional classes.Iftheycannotoccasionallymeetpeoplewhohave thesameinterestsastheyhavethemselvestheyareboundto feelunhappyandfrustrated."

TheseworkersincludePoles, Hungarians,Czechs,Serbs,Latvians,Lithuanians,Yugoslays, Estonians,Slovaks,Rumanians, UkrainiansandCroats.

Beforeopeningthecanteen BishopBrightblessedthecamp chapel,wherepriestsofthedifferentnationalitiescometosay MassandwherethePoles-500 stronginthecamp-havetheir ownspecialshrineofOurLady.

FortifiedbytheLastSacraments,Mrs.MaryEllenReddy gavebackhersoultoGodat theRoyalPerthHospital'on September20thattheadvanced ageof86years.BornatKinnitty,Co.Offaly,Ireland,in 1863,MaryCarrollcametoAustraliaasayounggirlandlived successivelyinQueenslandand NewSouthWales.AfterherarrivalinthisStateshemarried Mr.JohnReddyandwentto liveatMundaringWeir,where herhusbandwasengagedina transportbutiness.Mr.and Mrs.Reddyboughtanddonated totheChurchthesiteonwhich theMundaringChurchstands to-day, Twenty-twoyearsagoMrs. Reddywasbereavedofherhusband,andonhisdeathshe transferredtoMundaringand builtasmallcottagenexttothe Churchsite.Beingchildless,she resolvedtomakethebuildingof achurch"herbaby,"anddevotedmanyyearsofhardwork totherealisationofherpious ideal,MeantimeMasswasbeing offeredinthehallandinher ownhome,andMrs.Reddylovinglyarrangedthealtar.Fulfilmentcamein1933whenthe ChurchoftheSacredHeart, solidlybuiltofgranite,excellentlyfurnishedandequipped, andfreeofdebtwasopenedby ArchbishopClune.Theparish priestofToodyay,Dr.E.Collins,

gaveMrs.Reddytheprivilegeof namingit.Henceforththewhole ofherlifepivotedaboutthe careoftheChurchanddevotion tothepriestswhosuccessively ministeredthere.Inaddition, thoughhermeanswerenot great,shefilledherlifewith charitablegiftstovariousinstitutions.

Duringthepasttwoyearsher eyesightandgeneralhealthbegantofailandshehadperforce toleaveMundaring.Buttothe veryendofherlifeshemaintainedthedeepestinterestin everythingconnectedwiththe Churchandherlife'sambition wasconsummatedwhenthefirst parishpriestwasappointedto Mundaringthisyear, RequiemMassfortherepose ofhersoulwasofferedinthe MundaringChurchonSeptember21standalsoatSt.Mary's Cathedral.Atthefuneralno fewerthanfourparishpriests paidtribute,bytheirattendance, toonewhohadspentherlifein theserviceofGod-Rev,Dr.E. Collins,Rev.Fr.J.Lynch,Rev, Fr.J.McCormack,andRev,Fr. T.Linnane, Otherspresentincluded:Mrs. Friedman,Mrs.Hilton,Mrs. McCracken,Messrs.P.andH, Dunne,F.Jacoby,R.Wells,Mr. andMrs.F.O'Loughlin,Messrs.
