MONTREAL-(NC).-The Rev.PrimeGirard,O.M.I.,who diedrecentlyatLowell,Mass., wasthefounderoftheArctic missionofPond'sInletin1929, andwasknownasthe"firstparishpriestoftheNorthPole."
AconfrereofthelateCardinal RodrigueVilleneuveatSt.Joseph'sScholasticateinOttawa, FatherGirardhadbeenamemberoftheOblateOrderfor50 years.For20yearsheserved intheHudsonBayVicariate withBishopArseneTurquetil,andwasknownasagreatfriend oftheEskimos.Hewasresponsibleforthecompositionof-an Eskimoalphabet,whichhas servedmissionariesinlater years.
In1936,becauseofsnowblindness,FatherGirardleftthe missionfield,andvisited France,Italy,Switzerlandand Ireland,wherehegavenumerouslecturesontheOblatemissionsoftheCanadianFarNorth.

Considerableprogresshasbeen madeonruralreconstructionin theProvinceofSzechuan,under thesponsorshipoftheChinese andAmericanJointCommission on Rural Reconstruction (JCRR).Fundsallottedto carryontheJCRR'sworkmust havetheapprovaloftheEconomicCo-operationAdministration'sofficialsinWashington.
HowlongtheSzechuanprojectwillbeabletocarryonin thefaceofthepresentCommunistattackonKansu,whichmay developintoasouthwarddrive onSzechuan,remainstobe seen.Butitissignificantas showingwhatcouldbedoneto removegroundsonwhichmuch oftheCommunistpropaganda isbasedasregardspoorrural livingconditions.
BOLDPROGRAMME.
Szechuan,oneoftheunderdevelopedinlandprovinces, cameintoprominencewhenit embracedthewar-timeChinese capital,Chungking.Theprogrammethereincludeslandtenurereform,irrigationwork,animaldiseasecontrol,seedmultiplication,health,industries, farmers'organisationsandcitizenshipeducation.Withinthe lastsevenmonthstheareahas receivedmorethan£250,000. AsalmosteverywhereinChina thepositionoftenantfarmers andtheirratesofrentcallfor specialattention.JCRRisalso takingamorebenevolentinterestinlandreformplansfor Formosa.

O PiusXII.,someoftheworld'sleadingarcheologistsbeganthedelicateoperationofexploringthefoundationsofSt. Peter'sBasilica,thegreatesttempleintheworld.Original- ly,theworkcontemplatedwastheloweringofthefloorof thecryptinordertofacilitatetheaccessofpilgrimstothe tombsofthePopesburiedthere.However,theinitial operationsledtosuchinterestingdiscoveriesthatitwas decidedtocontinuetheworkonamuchlargerscale.Almosteveryspadeofearththatwasturnedbroughttolight, notunknownorunsuspectedsecrets,butratherconfirmation ofwhathadbeentheconstanttradition.Theancient pagancemeteryknowntohaveexistedinthevicinityofthe tombofthePrinceoftheApostleswasconfirmed.Many tombswerediscoveredintactandmuchnewlightwas thrownonthatperiodofRomanhistorypriortotheconversionoftheEmperorConstantineinthefourthcentury. Later,theoriginalbasilicabuiltbythatemperor,whowas instrumentalinraisingtheCrossofChristoverthepagan empireofRome,becametraceableinthemassivefoundationsandsupportingwallsthathadbeenbuilttoleveloff thegroundfortheeventualbasilica.Traceswerealso foundoftheCircusofNero.
DeeperanddeeperstillwenttheexcavationsuntilfinallytheHolyFatherhimselfwasabletoannouncelastJanuarythat"hereunderthedomeisthesiteofthetombof thePrinceoftheApostles."Thiswasimportant-notbecauseitrevealedsomethingunknown,butbecauseinconfirmedwhathadalwaysbeenthetradition,andcontradicted withirrefutableproofthefavouriteargumentadvancedby theenemiesoftheChurchandthePrimacyofPeter;name- ly,thatSt.PeterhadneverbeeninRome,thathecertainly didnotestablishtherehisSeenorsufferedmartyrdomon theVaticanHillaswasclaimed.Suchassertionswere madeinspiteofthewordsoftheRomanpriest,Caius,handeddowntousbyEusebius:"GototheVaticanandthe tr. Nineyearsago,attheexpresswishofhisHolinessPope PiusXII.,someoftheworld'sleadingarcheologistsbeganthedelicateoperationofexploringthefoundationsofSt. Peter'sBasilica,thegreatesttempleintheworld.Original- ly,theworkcontemplatedwastheloweringofthefloorof thecryptinordertofacilitatetheaccessofpilgrimstothe tombsofthePopesburiedthere.However,theinitial operationsledtosuchinterestingdiscoveriesthatitwas decidedtocontinuetheworkonamuchlargerscale.Almosteveryspadeofearththatwasturnedbroughttolight, notunknownorunsuspectedsecrets,butratherconfirmation ofwhathadbeentheconstanttradition.Theancient pagancemeteryknowntohaveexistedinthevicinityofthe tombofthePrinceoftheApostleswasconfirmed.Many tombswerediscoveredintactaridmuchnewlightwas thrownonthatperiodofRomanhistorypriortotheconversionoftheEmperorConstantineinthefourthcentury. Later,theoriginalbasilicabuiltbythatemperor,whowas instrumentalinraisingtheCrossofChristoverthepagan empireofRome,becametraceableinthemassivefoundationsandsupportingwallsthathadbeenbuilttoleveloff thegroundfortheeventualbasilica.Traceswerealso foundoftheCircusofNero.
DeeperanddeeperstillwenttheexcavationsuntilfinallytheHolyFatherhimselfwasabletoannouncelastJanuarythat"hereunderthedomeisthesiteofthetombof thePrinceoftheApostles."Thiswasimportant-notbecauseitrevealedsomethingunknown,butbecauseinconfirmedwhathadalwaysbeenthetradition,andcontradicted withirrefutableproofthefavouriteargumentadvancedby theenemiesoftheChurchandthePrimacyofPeter;namely,thatSt.PeterhadneverbeeninRome,thathecertainly didnotestablishtherehisSeenorsufferedmartyrdomon theVaticanHillaswasclaimed.Suchassertionswere madeinspiteofthewordsoftheRomanpriest,Caius,handeddowntousbyEusebius:"GototheVaticanandthe OstianWayandthereyouwillfindthetombsofthemartyrsPeterandPaul."Thisletterwaswrittenintheyear 200,only130yearsaftertheactualdateofthemartyr- domofthesetwoApostles.TheenemiesofthePapacy addedcalumnytotheirfalseassertionsbyproclaimingthe martyrdomofSt.Petera"myth"fabricatedinorderto substantiatetheclaimofRometothePrimacy.Theywent sofarastoaccusetheHolySeeofbadfaith,sayingthatthe prelatesoftheVaticanwereafraidtoexcavatebecause theyknewthattherecouldnotbefoundanytraceofatomb thathadneverexisted.
To-day,however,inthewordsoftheHolyFatherhimself,"thestoneshavespoken."Nowithasbeendefinitely established,withoutashadowofdoubt,thattheactualtomb ofthePrinceoftheApostlesisthereunderthecentralpoint ofthegreatdomeoftheBasilicaofSt.Peter'sintheVatican,aswasannouncedbytheHolyFather.Itwouldap- pearthattheworkofexcavationhasnowbeenpractically completed.Duringitsfinalstagesyetanotherinteresting discoverywasmade,constitutingonemoreproofoftheconstanttraditionregardingtheplaceofthetombofSt.Peter. Thisnewdiscoveryisaquantityofcoins,somedatingfrom thethirdandfourthcenturies,andothersfromtheninthto thethirteenthcenturies.Thiscollectionofcoinsis,initself,notveryimportant,butitbecomesofvaluebecauseof theplacewhereitwasfound:inthevicinityofthetomb ofSt.Peter.Thusitisprovedthatbothinthoseearly centuries,and.rightthroughtheninthtothethirteenth,pilgrimsfromallcountriesofEuropecametoveneratethe tombofthePrinceoftheApostles,wheretheydeposited theirofferings-justasdoCatholicsto-dayinallpartsof theChristianworldwhentheygoinpilgrimagetoanyof thevarioussanctuaries.

ThedeathofthelateMr. JamesKeating,of"Lisava,"96 VincentStreet,Mt.Lawley,on August24th.,closedthelifeof anoldandworthycitizen.The lateMr.Keatingwasbornat Collingwood,Victoria,79years ago.ComingtothisStatein 1898,heestablishedthewellknowntailoringbusinessof McLeanandKeatinginthat year.FormanyyearsMr. KeatingwasPresidentofthe MasterTailors'Association,and throughouthisbusinesslifehe enjoyedtherespectandesteem ofhisprofessionalcolleagues.
OnetimeTreasurerofthe CelticClubandapioneerofthe parishofHighgateHill,Mr. Keatingcontinuedlivinginthe parishuntilhisdeath.Always ofabrightandgenerousdisposition,hewasawellknown figureinPerthformanyyears. Mn.Keatingwaspredeceasedin 1932byMisswife,Margaret,and leavesafamilyoffivesons.

ThedeathofthelateMr. JamesKeating,of"Lisava,"96 VincentStreet,Mt.Lawley,on August24th.,closedthelifeof anoldandworthycitizen.The lateMr.Keatingwasbornat Collingswood,Victoria,79years ago.ComingtothisStatein 1898,heestablishedthewellknowntailoringbusinessof McLeanandKeatinginthat year.FormanyyearsMr. KeatingwasPresidentofthe MasterTailors'Association,and throughouthisbusinesslifehe enjoyedtherespectandesteem ofhisprofessionalcolleagues.
OnetimeTreasurerofthe CelticClubandapioneerofthe parishofHighgateHill,Mr. Keatingcontinuedlivinginthe parishuntilhisdeath.Always ofabrightandgenerousdisposition,hewasawellknown figureinPerthformanyyears. Mr!.Keatingwaspredeceasedin 1932byhiswife,Margaret,and leavesafamilyoffivesons.
Thefuneralcortegemoved fromtheSacredHeartChurch, HighgateHill,afterRev.Father McGrathhadofferedupRequiemMassforthereposeofhis soul,andthenproceededtothe CatholicCemetery,Karrakatta. TheRev.FatherMcGrath,assistedbytheRev.FathersSorohanandO'Reilly,recitedthe lastprayersforthefaithfuldeparted. Thechiefmournerswere Messrs.Reg,Len,Jack,Kevin andLeoKeating(sons),Mrs.R. titles,itisalways-tothesame sanctuaryaboutonemilefrom theshore.Itisoneofthe oldestinItaly,andhasavery interestinghistoricalbackground. Saladin,thecelebratedSultan ofEgypt,resolvedupontheconquestofPalestine.TheBat-
armyofSaladin.TheretreatingChristiansdiscovereda statueofOurLadyandrescued itfromprofanehands.Weary andfootsore,thoseCrusadersset outintheirboatsforhomedisgracedbyutterfailure,butconsoledbythepreciouspossession ofaPalestinianstatueofOur Lady.
Aftermanydaysofstriving withoarsagainstadversewinds thislittleremnantofthevanquishedCrusaderswasnearing thecoastofSicilywhenastorm ofmagnitudearoseandtossed andheavedtheboatsothatthe sailorspreparedforawatery grave.Theironlyhopewas theprotectionofMary,whose imagetheysoreverentlycarriedfromPalestine.Theywere notdisappointedintheirhopes, forthisstormwhichOurLady herselfhadcaused,blewthem tosafety.Thosewayfarers pouredouttheirheartsin thanksgivingwhentheyfound themselvessafelyatland-to themaforeignland-butitwas Molfetta,ontheeastcoastof Italy.
TheItalianpeople,overjoyed toseesuchabeautifulstatueof theMadonna,hadaspecial sanctuarypreparedforit.This wasintheyear1186,andever sincethenOurLadyhasshown bynumerousmiracleshow pleasedsheistobevenerated at title:Molfettaunderthisspecial "TheVirginoftheMartyrs."
Perhapsoneofthegreatest manfestationsofherloveforthe MolfettesewaswhentheheathenTurksinvadedItaly.Those barbariansrobbedandlooted Molfetta,carryingawayamong thespoilstheirmuch-treasured Madonna;butasuperiorpower watchedovertheproceedings. Heartbroken,theMolfettesesaw itcarriedintotheTurkishships andborneaway.Butnowsomethingofthemiraculoushappen- ed-agreatdisturbancebeneath thesea.Theboatshaltedas thewaterreceded,andasandy beachappearedholdingthe Turkishships.Terrified,the Turksreturnedtothemainland, bringingtheMadonnawith them,andoncemorethestatue wasplacedinitsformersanctuary.OurLadywishedher imagetobeveneratedstillat Molfetta.
Centurieslateranattemptwas madetoblowupthesanctuary withdy%amite,butagainthe naturalwassuspendedandno explosionoccurred.Theseare buttwoof recorded.themanymiracles Wheneverthereisa
Molfettesebythenumberof suchpicturesonthewallsof thesanctuary,itisverygreat indeed.Hereoneseesthe paintingofacrippledboybeing
restoredtohealth,orablind girlreceivinghersight,oragain adistractedwifewelcominga husbandthathadbeenthought lost.Thewallsareliterally coveredwithsuchpicturesgivingtestimonytothepowerof OurLady'sintercessionwith God. Nowonder,then,thatthe 8th.Septembereachyearisset aparttqhonour"TheVirginof theMartyrs."AfterthemorningMassthestatueisbornein solemnprocessiontotheseashoreandplacedinagaily-decoratedboat.Thenalongsea processiontakesplace.Our Lady'sstatueisbornefarout overthefishingcentres.The processionreturnsintheevening,whenabanquetisprepar- ed,followedbyagreatdisplay offireworks.Thedaycloses withspecialdevotions,whilethe Molfettese,renewedinthefervouroftheirloveforGodand Mary,lookforward,tonew gracesandblessingsforthe comingyear.

ItisOurLady'sintercession, andherintercessionalone, whichto-daycansaveAustraliafromanenemymuchmore powerfulthanthe"redplague," namelythewateringdownof thedignityandnobilityof womanhood.
Itishightimethatwomen tookstockofthesituationand ceasedtoapemen.Thetime hasarrived,andmoreoveris overdue,whenadefinitestand shouldbemadebydecent womentocommenceacampaigndesignedtobringback intoevidencethewomanlywomanwithgraciousmanners whommeninstinctivelyadmire. Onlythencanweexpectthereturnofthechivalrousman. AlmightyGodendowedwomenwithaveryspecialattribute-thegiftofbringingout thebestinmen.Awoman,and awomanalone,caninspire,ennoble,canrefineAtndliftmanto thegreatheightswhichhecan attain.Oncewomanlosesthis delicategift,agiftwhichhas notbeengiventoman,thenshe ceasestobetruetohersex.Insteadofelevatingmen,she dragsthemdown.
Somewomen,insteadofhavingastheiridealOurBlessed Lady,haveallowedthemselves tobesacrificedonthealtarsof vanityandmake-believe,and havelostthetrueartofliving. Toomanyhaveallowedthemselvestobeside-trackedfrom thenoblepurposeandthehighdignityforwhichtheyaredestined. Insteadofaddinglustreand honourtotheirsex,theyareon thewaytobetrayingthedignitywhichwaswonforthem whenOurLadywaschosenas theMotherofGod,andinstead ofenjoyingthehighplacein societytowhichtheywereelevatedbyOurDivineLord,they willagainbeenfetieredwith bondsofslaveryandtrampled underfootbytheverymenthey areendeavouringtoequal.
Justasmankindwasledinto bondagebythefirstEveanddeliveredbythesecondEve, namely,OurLady,soto-day womenmustthrowoffthefalse philosophieswhicharetypified bythefirstEveandembrace thehighidealsandnobleattainmentsforwhichOurLady stands. What'stheuseofwriting aboutthedeedsofsportsmen, what'sthegoodofencouraging youngmenandwomentodevelophealthybodies,whenon allsidestheyarebeinggiven noencouragementtodevelopa healthymind?

THE18-HOURDAY.
Itwasthetimeofgoldfever, andmenwereflockingoverto theWestinthousands,anddying likefliesinthemosquito-infestedflatsandthevillagesoftents inKalgoorlie.BishopGibney, ofPerth,calledforvolunteers fromtheSisters,andsentthree uptoopenaschoolanddowhat nursingtheycouldontheGoldfields.MotherAntonio,now dead,andthefoundationmember,andanotherSisterhadan instantsuccesswiththeschool, whichopenedwithsixchildren thefirstweek,jumpedtotenin thesecond,andsteadilyincreasedtilltheharassedSistershad fourhundredchildreninregular attendance,aswellasnursingin theafter-schoolhours.Their's wasaneighteenhourdaymost ofthetime,butthewomenand childrentookonanewsignificancewiththeircoming,andthe roughestofmengavethem courtesy,admirationanddeference.

Itwasononeofthehottest daysofthesummer,whenthe temperaturewas119inthe shade,thatBishopGibneyvisitedthem,andfoundtheSisters intheirblackhabitsdroopingin theoven-likerooms,yetrigidly adheringtotheirruleofno waterornourishmentorfruit betweenmeals.Helookedat theirtiredfaces,andstalked outoftheroom,returningvery shortlywithadozenicedsodawater."Thisisanecessityfor yourhealth,Sisters,"hesaid, "andinfutureyouaretohavea chopforbreakfast,andeverythingtopreservethathealth, andtherulefortakingadrink inbetweenmealsisrelaxed whileyouareworkingunder theseconditions."

NineSisters,underMotherAntonio,volunteeredfromtheSistersofSt.JohnofGod.From heretheirsuccessledtotheir openingupaschoolandnursingintheGovernmenthospital atBroome.Everywherethey wentordercameoutofchaos, andsuccesscametocrownall theirefforts,andthenumbersof sickanddestitutesoulsthey havesenttoGodiscountless. ThefameoftheSistersandtheir popularitycausedtheGovernmentin1837toaskthemto takeoverthenursingofthe newly-erectedLeprosariumat Derby.Heretheynurseover 250lepers,manyofwhomare cot-cases.

InPerth,backintheearly days,BishopGibneybuiltthe
SistersthepresentConvent, whichhasbeenaddedto,and theyweremuchperturbedas theirhospital,alittlegaragelikeplace,underthesixold peppertrees(thatstandtothe rightoftheConvent,inaseaof cement)wasaplaceofonly threewards-oneformales,one forfemales,andsixprivate rooms,10feethighby8feet. Andtheyfeltthattheywere betterhousedthantheir patients.Patiently,butfirmly, HisLordshipexplainedthatit wasnecessarytoguardtheir healthandhousethemproperly, asiftheywerenotfitandwell theirworkwouldsuffer,and thatwasallimportant.Besides,hepointedout,thehospitalwouldcome,intime.
NURSINGPREFERRED.
In1911,theSisterswentinto white,asthiswasthoughttobe moresuitablefortheirwork, andthefirstbrickofthenew hospitalwaslaid.Archbishop Clunewishedthemtogiveup teaching,andconcentrateonthe nursing,astherewasmoreneed forthis,andnootherOrderestablishedherehadtheirqualifications.Sotheystarteda TrainingSchool,andthework branchedoutwithasteady streamofpatientscominginand theaccommodationsadlylacking.
