WhilethefutureoftheChurch andofArchbishopJosefBeran inCzechoslovakiaremainsuncertain,thereisnownodoubt astothefalsityoftheregime's propagandathatthePrague Archbishopenjoyspersonalfreedom.Theveilhidingthisdeceitwasrippedawaybythe Archbishophimself.

InabitterlettertotheState prosecutor,hechargedthathe isacompleteprisonerinhispalace,thataGovernment-appointedlaymanhasusurpedthe Archbishop'sauthorityandhas confiscatedandisdisposingof theArchdiocese'sfundsandproperty,andthattheCatholic ChurchinCzechoslovakiahas beenrobbedofindependencein purelyinternalaffairs.

Forsometimegovernment propagandahadblaredforth thattheArchbishopenjoyspersonalfreedom,thathecancome andgoashepleases,andthat heisremaininginhispalace onlytospreadthe"lie"inwesterncountresthathehasbeen deprivedofhisliberty.

BERANPROTESTS.

Theletter,datedAugust5, cametolightintheCzechoslovakcapitalthroughdiplomatic andChurchsources,

"SinceJune19Ihavebeen internedinthepalaceofthe Archbishop,"theletterdeclared."Iamnotpermittedvisitors,anditissaidthattheArchbishopforbadesuchvisits.

"Iamdeprivedofallpersonal freedomandallrightsasthe Archbishop,andallthiswithout anyinvestigatonandwithout anydecisionofanycourtorany otherofficialauthority."

"IstheRomanCatholic ChurchinCzechoslovakia.still recognisedbytheState?Ifso, bywhatlawwastheRoman CatholicChurchdeprivedofits legalindependenceininternal matters?"

Theletterrelatesthatthe Archbishophadsentwritten proteststotheMinistryofEducation,totheMinistryoftheInterior,andtotheofficeofthe CzechoslovakGovernment,but allhavegoneunanswered.

Notingthatanofficialofthe EducationalMinistry,Dr.MiroslavHouska,hadbeeninstalled as"supervisor"intheArchbishop'schancery,invirtueofa lawoftheoldAustrianEmpire, datedMay7,1874,theArchbishopaskedbywhatinterpretationofthelawthisofficialis empoweredtoexerciseallthe functionsofthechancery.

Forthefirsttimesincebefore thewar,aDublindiocesanpilgrimageofmorethan1,000personshasgonetotheFrench ShrineofOurLadyofLourdes. ArchbishopJohnMcQuaidisthe spiritualdirector.Includedwere 120invalids,ofwhom90went inspecialplanes,acompaniedby Msgr.R.J.Glennon. Therewasaninterestingfeatureaboiltthepilgrimageof someoftheinvalids.Tohelp payforinvalidsunabletomeet thecostofthefullfare,thepilgrimageorganisingcommittee establishedwhatwascalledthe AssociatesofOurLadyofLourdes.Membersconsistedofpeopleunabletomakethepilgrimage,who,nevertheless,wanted tobeunitedwithitinspirit.

TheAssociateswereenrolled bypayingsubscriptionsfor membershipandbadges-atiny pinofOurLadyofLourdes. Theyundertooktorecitethe prescribedprayersdailyand wereofferedashareinthespiritualbenefitsofthepilgrimage. FundsfromthesaleoftheAssociates'badgeswenttothose invalidpilgrimsinneedofassistance.

Beyonddemandingaliving wageforworkers,thedelegates stressedwhattheycalleda"socialwage."Asocialwagewas describedasonethattakesinto considerationthewagesofother occupations.Thewagesfor onegroupshouldnotbesohigh thatitsfinishedproductsbecomeanunbearableexpenseto peopleinotheroccupations,they said.

Turningtotheproblemof Communism,thedelegateswent onrecordasopposingtheoutlawingoftheCommunistparty. Effortsshouldratherbemadeto unmaskthefalsityoftheRed propaganda,theysaid.

LONDON,Aug.19-Anyidea onthepartofCatholicsthatthe YugoslavCommunistsmight haveabandonedtheirplanto liquidatetheChurchshowsa completelackofrealism,accordingtolatestreportsreaching hereThattheincreasingrift betweenMoscowandBelgrade hasnotlessened,butevenspurredthepersecution,isnowconfirmedbyreportsofthemost recenteventsinYugoslavia.

Infact,thereportssay,MarchallTito'spersecutionisnow initssecondphase:theinitial periodofslaughterandintimidationculminatedintheimprisonmentofArchbishopAloisius Stepinac,ofZagreb;inthepresentphase,theregimeisharryingthefaithfulandperverting theyouthofthecountry.

Astothecorruptionofyouth, CommunistauthoritiesatMedijimuri,theportionoftheArchdioceseofZagrebalongthe Hungarianborder,wroteanorderthatreligionmaynotbe taughttochildrenuptotheage of16.Thewrittenorderwas withdrawn,buttheprohibition stands.Atypicalexampleof CommunistchicaneryisthebarringoftheteachingoftheCatechisminchurch,because"religious"instructionisprovided intheStateschoolsby"popular frontpriests."

Astopilgrimages,Communistshaveinvokedsternmeasures todiscouragepilgrimagestothe nationalCroatShrineofMaria Bistricabytransportation,accommodationandfoodprohibitions.

PROFANATION.

TheConferencedecided,on themotionofthePerthdelegates,toconductacampaign overaperiodof3-5yearson "Familylifeandhomeresponsibility."Thiswouldopenwith acampaignon"Chastity,-which wouldbeconductedthroughthe InquiryMethodfromMarchto June,1950. Itwouldbefollowedbya campaignon "Drink." SERVICES.

ItwashopedbyConference thattheAdolescentTraining CoursesandtheCanaandpre.* CanaConferenceswouldbeextendedtoallStates,aswellas theCo-operatingHousingand Tradingsocieties.

TheneedforgoodCatholic clubs,especiallyinindustrial areas,wasstressed,together 6 withtheconstructionofpermanentholidaycamps,which wouldadmitaquotaofnonCatholics.

Vocationalguidance,employmentandaccommodationservicesshouldbeextended,and thevisitationofsickyouthin hospitalsorbed-riddenathome.

Itwasalsohopedtodevelop moreculturalservicesinthe wayofencouraginggoodbooks, musicanddramaticproductions,

agewasregardedasapre-eminentsocialproblemcallingfor drasticaction.Concreteproposalsinthisdirectionwere discussed.Asonly50percent. offamiliesinAustraliaown theirownhomes,itwassuggestedthattheGovernment shouldassisthomepurchaseby fosteringco-operativebuilding societiesandbyreducingthe interestrateonhomebuilding loans.

FILMADVERTISING. Conferencedisapproved,ofthe typeofadvertisingwhichmade itsappealthroughtheover-emphasisofsex,andwhichwas notinaccordancewiththecontentofthefilmadvertised.To eliminatethesedegradingpractices,itwasdecidedtodirect thenoticeoftheCommonwealth Censortothedisplaysonhoarding,trailers,stills,etc.,andto writetofilmproducerspointing outthattheywerelosingrevequethroughsuchadvertising.

ItwasconsideredbyConferencethat,toencouragewholesomerecreationamongyoung workers,the10percent.Sales Taxonsuchequipmentneeded bythemshouldbelifted.
