Mostvaluablefruitofthe methodadoptedbytheSynod ofSydneyinestablishingCatholicActionistherelativeease withwhichapriestorlayleadercannowunderstandanyof theseMovements, becauseof theverydefiniteanduniform fundamentalprinciplesdiscoveredandelaboratedbytheSecretariat."StudiesinCatholic Action"isabrilliantexpositionoftheseprinciples, andwill certainlybecomeastandard text-bookinallEnglish-speakingcountries, AMISSIONARYPROBLEM.

Thehardfactsofleakage. smallnumbersatdailyMass. desertedDevotions, mixedmarriagesandthelikearegraduallybringinghometoeventhe mostoptimisticpastorthefact thatthereissomethingwrong withtheworld.Thelaity, overwhelmedbyworldevents andthepaganterrorsoftotalitarianStates, confusedbythe broadstandardsandincreasing lackofasenseofsininthe worldaboutthem, joininthe generallament.Forallof these,"StudiesinCatholicAction"isaprovidentialbook. It setsoutthemindoftheChurch onthemodernproblemasexpressedbytherecentPontiffs intheclearestpossibleway. Theproblemisstatedasbeing essentiallyamissionaryone:

Thechallengefiringthevisionoftheauthorsisthatwhich confrontedtheapostles.

"Wetakeupthetaskofthe earlyChristians winning overapaganworldtothe startlingandnovelrevelationof thepersonalityandmessageof Christ."(p.30.)

Onlythosewhoregardthis

TheexistenceoftheSecretariat; theveryworthofthisbook, standorfallonthetruthor otherwiseofthisfundamental proposition;thatPriorityOnefor apriest, afterthedispensation ofthesacramentsandpreaching, istheworkofCatholicAction.Theslowandpainful progresswehavewitnessedat timesresultsfromtheinnocent blindnessofsomanymenof goodwill.Howaptarethe wordsofPopePiusXI.quoted bytheauthor:
