ThusMonsignorFultonJ.SheenparaphrasestheparableofthePharisee(Luke,18;10-14),todramatisethe mainpointofhisnewbook,publishedrecently,"Peaceof Soul."

PersuasiveFultonSheenwould liketointroducemodernman toGodbywayofSt.Thomas Aquinas'famedfiveproofsfrom reasonofGod'sexistence,but hefeelsthatmanyaharassed, scatterbrainedmodernmanmay be"tooconfusedtograspthem."

SoMsgr.Sheenbeginshisbook wherethereadersofself-improvementvolumesseemtofeel mostathome:therealmofpsychology."Ifthemodernsoul," hewrites,"wantstobeginits questforpeacewithitspsychologyinsteadofwithourown metaphysics,wewillbeginwith psychology. Muchofthepsychiatry,Sheen argues,onlygivesmanafalse sensethatalliswellwithhim, wheninrealitythingscouldnot beworse.Thepsychiatrist's patientmayindeedgainpeace ofmind,buttheChristiangets somethingfarbetter-peaceof soul."Thereisaworldofdifferencebetween(them).Peace ofmindistheresultofbringingsomeorderingprincipleto bearondiscordanthuman experiences;thismaybeachievedbytolerance,orbya grittingofone'steethintheface ofpain;bykillingconscience,or denyingguilt,orbyfindingnew lovestoassuageoldgriefs.Each oftheseisanintegration,but onaverylowlevel.Thiskind ofpeaceOurLordcallsfalse,andhelikensittolivingunder thedominionofSatan..."
