ThetwomainfallaciesoftheReportinvolvethenotionsthat'procreation.(orrather,itsprevention)shouldbea matterofpublicpolicy,andsecondly,thatthebegettingof childrenisprimarilyapolitical,economicandsocialquestion.TheimmemorialChristianviewisthatsexisprimarilyaspiritualandmoralaffair,becauseithasnoefficacy orpurposeapartfromtheco-operationofmenandwomen withtheCreatoroflife.God'sshareinthematter-the majorone,letusrecall-iscarriedthroughinthelawsof nature;anyartificialtamperingwiththoselawsisunnatural andthereforeimmoral.
Regardingtheotheraspectsofthequestionasthey impungeonpolitics,freemenoughttoinvitethebusybodieswhowishtoplanoutotherpeople'slivestothelast detail,tomindtheirownbusinessinthepersonal,intimate andsacredmatterofsexrelationsinmarriage.
Thequestionofwhetherbirth-preventionispopularor ingeneralpracticeiscompletelyirrelevant,becausemoralitydoesnotstemfrommajorityvotes.Moreover,itis generallyconcededonmedicalandpsychologicalgrounds thatthereisarealandinimicalrelationbetweencontraceptionandneuroticdisease,especiallyamongwomen.Despite theassurancesoftheCommissionregardingthefuture, every-dayexperience'showsthatbirth-controlendsupwith nocontrolandveryfewbirths-astateofaffairsverygratifyingtoourenemies.
Hadthegroupofmenandwomenwhoframedthe Reportconspiredtogethertoundermineandoverthrow BritainandthenationsoftheBritishCommonwealth,they couldscarcely,bystrikes,sabotage,seditionorarmedrebellion,haveaccomplishedsomuchtothesamepurposeas theyhavedonebytheirattackonthelifespringsofthe Britishrace.Thereseemslittlepointinsafeguardingthe secretsoftheatombomb,whilethemoreinsidiousand deadlyweaponofthecontraceptiveisnotmerelytolerated butofficiallyencouraged.TheRoyalCommissiondid,itis true,adverttotheCatholic butitisclearthatthe Christianpointofviewcutexactlynoiceatall.Itisthis insensitivitytothecrystal-clearobligationsoftheNatural Lawthatmakessuchdiscouragingreading.Foritisplain thatoncethetypeof"planning"advocatedbytheCommissionisofficiallyacceptedandpractisedpolitically,therecan benobartofurtherenormities.Thenextlogicalstep willinvolveinfanticide,sterilisation,euthanasiaandanumberofothercrimesforwhichwerecentlyhangedaliberal numberofNazidoctors.
TherewasnottheslightestindicationintheReport thattherewasaspiritualandmoralsubstratumoflife whichcouldbeconsideredassignificant.Itisadocument preparedbymaterialistsformaterialists.Theevidenceof NaturalLawpropoundedbyCatholicwitnesseswasdismissedwiththepuerileremarkthat"responsiblesectionsofthe communitysawnothinginherentlywrong"incontraception.Onewonderswherethiskindofresponsibilitybegins andends.ItwillcertainlynotberesponsibleforthesurvivalofBritain.Anditinvolvesmuchthesamekindof logicthattheuseofsoapisunnecessarybecausethemajorityofsmallboysseesnoinherentvirtueinitsretention.In aword,thepopulationreportistheworkofpeoplemorally immature,andhenceirresponsible.Theyfreelyadmit thatnaturalincreaseamongpeoplesoftheWestern sationhasmarkedlydeclined,whilethatoftheOrietntal peopleshasmarkedlyincreased.Surelythisisthemajor factorinthequestionofsurvival;yettheCommissionlight- heartedlyplacesthesolutioninafurtherreductionofour numbers.Theaveragemancanonlyviewthatkindof thingaschroniclunacy.

Authorandproducermustbe censured;wheretheauthor missedouttheproducershould havetakenuptheslack.The prolongedscenebetweenJohnny andIrisMarsh(ShirleyGeddes),inAct3,wasaclassicexampleoffatuity.WhenJohnnyeventuallyworkedoutwhathad happenedtoIris,hisamazement wastoomuchfortheaudience, whichlaughedtoaman.Simplearithmeticwasapparently justanotherofJohnny'sweak points.
Themusic,ofcourse,isenchanting.MissMoncrieffsings thatoldfavourite,"Villio,"with greatsuccess.HerbertBrown andMiriamLesteraretogether inpopularduets-especially popularwas"ADutifulWife." Themostrousing-andamusing -choruswasthemalemarchseptet,"Women." Thefamous"MerryWidow Waltz"wasdancedbyMiss MoncrieffandFredMurray severaltimes.Earliertheyhad scoredheavilywiththeattractiveduet,"Cavalier"-made particularlyattractivebythe dumb-showanticsofMr.Murrayinhisimitationsofahorseman. Theballetwentthroughsome pleasingroutines,BettySparks (asFrou-Frou)turnedonsome prettyacrobatics,andValerie Meehan(asFi-Fi)provideda fast-movingandskilfulsolo dance. DramaFestivalGets OffToBadStart
TheDramaFestival,conductedundertheauspicesofthe TheatreCouncilofW.A.,openedattheAssemblyHallon TuesdaynightwiththepresentationofTomJudd's"Life BurnsOn,"theAlfredSandover prize-winningplayintheAustralian-wideplaycompetition recentlyconcluded.
Itwasaninauspiciousbeginning.Theplaywasarank failure.Rarely,ifever,have somanypeoplebeeninagree mentonthemeritsofaperformanceaswasthefullhouse thatstreamedoutoftheAssemblyHallonthisfirstnightof thefirstDramaFestivalheldin Perthsincepre-wardays.On allsidescouldbeheardderisive commentsorthesortofpolite laughsbywhichwell-bredpeopleindicatetheirdisappointment.Itwasanightwhen eventhepoker-facedcritics couldrelaxandfeelthatthey weremembersofthehuman familyagain.Incidentally,it wasaverycriticalaudience. Mostpeoplepresentwereregularfollowersofthedrama.
If"LifeBurnsOn"isthe bestofallthe(some20ormore) playsthatweresubmittedfor thecompetition,,itisasadcommentaryonthestandardofthe entries.Itwouldbeinterestingtoknowwhattheworstof themislike.
Bestinthecast,inmyopinion,wasBiddyLawson,becauseshewasmostnaturaland convincing.Afterherwould comeKevinMoylan,whoseemedapassablemanontheland andcontrivedtowinagood dealofsympathy.ShirleyGeddeshadtofollowthescript, whichwasahandicap;othewiseshemayhavemademuch moreofanimpression.Mrs. R.J.Coxseemedoutoftouch foronce,andWalterWestwas rathercolourless.NoreenKnight didareasonablygoodjob.
Theplayattemptedtodeal withthepsychologicalupset causedinamanbytheimpact ofwaronhim.

OnSunday,19th.June,the WaginbranchoftheHolyName Societyconductedarallyfor theirmembers,intendingmembers,andshould-bemembers fromallpartsoftheparish,in LakeGrace.LakeGracewas chosenasthemostcentralplace fortherally,andthisjudgment hasbeenamplyconfirmedby theattendanceonthisoccasion.
HolyMasswascelebratedin theLakeGraceHallathalfpastnineo'clockonSunday,and allofuswhoassistedatthat Masswillrememberittillthe daywedie.Wegenerallyhear Massinourownlittlegroupsin ourownsmallcountrycentres, butonthisoccasionwewere joinedwithhundredsofothers fromthosecentrestoofferOur LordtoGodtheFatherasour ownsacrificeofhonourandre paration,andtoreceiveOur LordinHolyCommunion.Our consciousnessofwhywewere togetherhasdonemuchto strengthenourfaith,and,as Fatherpointedoutinhissermontous,whenwearehearingMassbackinourowncentresinthefuture,wecanrealisethatwearenotalonebut arejoinedwithhundredsinthe parish,thousandsintheArchdiocese,millionsthroughoutthe world,whohonourGodinthe Massaswedo.

Manyofthemweremembers alsooftheLeagueagainstImperialism.BeforelongHyde joinedthatLeague,too,andthen variousotherleaguesandassociationswhichreallyformeda Communistnetworkofnearpartyorganisations.Bythetimehe was18,aftermuchthoughtand discussion,hehadbecomea memberoftheCommunistPartyandhadthrownoverboardas unworthyofamodernandprogressiveyouthallthoughtofbecomingamissionary.Forsome timeheclungdesperatelytothe remnantsofhisChristianity.He calledhimselfaChristian-Communistanddrewacrosson whichhungahammerandsickleinhiscopyofLenin'sworks. Olderpartymemberssmiledand said,"You'llgrowoutofit." Theywereright;hedid.

CameWorldWarII,andafter theinitialbackingandfillingof theCommunistPartyasto whichsideitwouldsupport,the Partysettleddowntoattempt toundermineBritain'swareffortandHydewasappointedto thestaffofthePartypaper, "TheDailyWorker."Thatpaper wasbannedbytheGovernment, anditsnewseditorwasgiven anotherFleetStreetjobbythe Party,tryingtogetRedpropagandastoriesintoordinary papersthroughoutBritain. WhenHitlerattackedRussia andtheBritishCommunist Partycameoutwithsupport forBritaininthewar,"The DailyWorker"wasallowedto getgoingagainandHydewas oncemoreamemberofitsstaff. HydefoundplentyofinspirationinCommunismandplenty ofscopeforhisyouthfulenthusiasm.TheChristianshehad knownhadbeencomplacent, theCommunistswithwhomhe nowbelongedhadahugeimpatiencewitheverythingthat waswrongwiththeworld.The Christiansseemedtobestill ditheringaroundafter2,000 years.TheCommunistParty, afteronlyafewyears,knewexactlywhereitstoodandwhat itwanted.Christianityhadits martyrs,buttheyseemedremoteandmostofthemofother ages,whereastheCommunists hadplentyofpresent-daymartyrsinAsia,intheBalkans,and even,toalesserextent,inhis owncountry,England.Infact, almosteveryRedhemethad somethingofthemartyrinhim, inasmuchashehadbeenvictimisedatonetimeoranother, sacked,refusedajoborgiven theworstkindofwork,simply becausehewasaCommunist.

DouglasHydeshowedgreat courageinbecomingaCatholic. Hehadn'taCatholicfriendin theworld;itwaslaunchingintotheunknown.Thenhewas cancellingoutallthathehad livedforinthelast20years. Manymenwouldhavepretendednottoseethelightrather thangiveadenialtoeverything thathehadvaluedandesteemedandworkedfor.Furthermore inbecomingaCatholicandleavingtheCommunistPartyhewaS courtinghatredandabuse.(Incidentally,itnearlyalwaysrequiresagreatdealofcourage tobecomeaCatholic.)

Itseemstomethat,summing up,therearethreepointsinhis changefromCommunismto Catholicismthatareworthstressingifwearetounderstandwhy hemadethatchange.
In1943hehadlibelledaCatholicpaper,"TheWeeklyReview,"callingitFascist.Inpreparingfortheanticipatedcourt case(whichnevercameofP)he readthroughthepaper'sfiles fortheprecedingyear,and studiedeachissueasitappeared.Thus,hemetCatholicism, andwasdeeplyimpressed.He usedtolookforwardtothe weeklyappearanceofthepaperonhisdesk,andbeganto readgraduallytheworksof ChestertonandBelloc.

DouglasHydewasborninruralEnglandintoamiddle-class Nonconformistfamily,and,had aChristianupbringing.Asa youthheintendedtogotoIndia asaMethodistmissionary,and hestartedstudyingtheology withthatendinview.Because hewasinterestedinIndiahe joinedtheCommonwealthofIndiaLeague,wherehemetkeen andintelligentyoungpeople. Manyofthemweremembers alsooftheLeagueagainstImperialism.BeforelongHyde joinedthatLeague,too,andthen variousotherleaguesandassociationswhichreallyformeda Communistnetworkofnearpartyorganisations.Bythetimehe was18,aftermuchthoughtand discussion,hehadbecomea memberoftheCommunistPartyandhadthrownoverboardas unworthyofamodernandprogressiveyouthallthoughtofbecomingamissionary.Forsome timeheclungdesperatelytothe remnantsofhisChristianity.He calledhimselfaChristian-Communistanddrewacrosson whichhungahammerandsickleinhiscopyofLenin'sworks. Withtheworldthewayitis, andeverybodytoooccupiedwith warsandrumoursofwarsand strikesandthreatsofadepression,itisalmosttoodepressing ajob,tooforlornatask,toattempttostrikeablowforthe freedomofthespirit.
Yetdauntlesslyandindefatigablywemustpresstheclaims ofeverymantoashareinthat largerlifewhichishisnatural birthright,andfromwhichhe houldneverbesodivorcedas theextraordinarycircumstances ofto-dayhavefoundhimtobe. Inearliertimesmanmayhave beenunletteredandignorant; butIventuretothinkthatatno periodinourhistoryhavewe beensoignorantofthethings thatreallymatterandwhich makeforrealhappinessaswe arenow.
Ithasbecomefashionableto sneeratthe"backwardness"of thepeopleoftheMiddleAges. Anythingwhichseemstorun countertoprogress-nomatter hewhazyournotionsofprqr gressmaybe-isclassedas"medieval."Yetthepeopleofthe MiddleAgesknewhowtobe happywithinthefamilycircle, knewhowtoworkwiththeir handsandgetpleasureandsatisfactionfromthefruitsoftheir labour,andintheorganisation andconductoftheircraftguilds knewhowtoapplythoseChristianvirtuesofhonestyandcharitywhichareconspicuouslyabsentfromthefabricofmodern society.
Agreattragedyofourday- perhapsthegreatestinterms of the insularitywhichisolatesevery individualfromthe.mannextto him.Thisisparticularlytrue ofmetropolitansociety;asone getsfurtherandfurtherinto thecountrythebondbetween manandmanperceptibly strengthens.Butinthecity weareasspokesinawheel, sidebysidebutnevertouching. Wegoaboutourdailytaskswith monotonousandsoul-killingregularity.Weareservantsof some"boss,"whohasonlya veryremoteinterestinus;our interestinhimisequallydistant.Weeatanddrinkand sleepandknownochange. In1946thefirsttwoteamsof LayAuxiliariesleftfortheBelc,,ianCongo;oneteamisworkingnowatCostermansville (Kivu)andtheotheratKolwezi (NighKatasga)),inAfrica.
InApril,1947,athirdteamleft forNankingtoworkintheCapitalofChinaunderArchbishop PaulYuPin.

Thesubstitutionofatriangular symboloraredheartforthe traditonalredcross,wasdiscussedatacommitteemeeting oftheinternationalconference herefortherevisionoftheconventionfortheprotectionof warvictims.
RepresentativesoftheInternationalRedCrosspointedout thatthecrosswasthemostobviousandsimplestsymbolof charityrecognisedtheworld over,butdelegatesfromboth EgyptandTurkeyinsistedthat totheircountriestheredcrescentwasthetraditionalemblem ofneighbourlylove,whilethe Israelirepresentativessuggested therecognitionofthestarof Davidinternationally.Thelatter motionwasrejected,butnodecisionhasbeenreachedsofaras towhethertheredcrossshould continuetobevalidasthesymbolofspecialprotectionintime ofwar.
