TOKYO.-Across400yearsand15,000miles,the righthandofXavierreachesoutagaintotouchthehandiworkofXavier.Areliquarycontainingtherightarm ofSt.FrancisXavierarrivedherefromRomeforcelebrationsmarkingthefourthcentenaryoftheSaint'scomingtoJapan.Sunday,May29,sawthebeginningof thecelebrationsinNagasaki,theoldChristiancentre, sceneofsixteenthcenturymartyrdomsandtargetofthe twentiethcenturyatombomb.

Takingtheformofapilgrimage,thecelebrationswilllast twoweeks,reachingtheirclimax onSunday,June12,withaPontificalMassinTokyo'svastMeiji Stadium.

AllJapanisinterestedinthe centenary.Evennon-Christians realisethehistoricsignificanceof Xavier'scomingtoJapaninthe yearof1549,Hewasthefirst tointroduceJapantotheoutsideworldandtheoutsideworld toJapan.TheJapaneserecognisethattheFaithheplanted herehassurvivedwithmarvellousvitalityandheroicfruits, whereinevennon-Christianstake pride.

COLOGNE,May12.-ExperimentsrecentlycarriedoutatSt. FrancisHospitalhere,underthe directionofDr.HermannMoed4 der,whoisinchargeoftheXraydepartment,haveledtothe conclusionthatChristdiedon theCrossfroman"orthostatic collapse"resultingfromacessationofheartandcerebralfunctionswhich,inturn,werecaused byinsufficientbloodcirculation. WhyConditionalBaptism IsGiven

OnePapalNunciotoLisbon, impressedbythecurativepropertieshehadfoundintobacco. claimedit"curedsuchmaladies ascolds,catarrh,hoarseness, headache,paininthestomach, lungsandchest."

Tobaccoleafpoulticesandtcbaccojuicebecametheasprins andalkaseltzersoftheirage. OnebuccaneerreportedtheFloridaIndianscouldlivefouror livedayswithouteating,aslong astheyweresmoking.

Nicotine.

Itwasin1559.whenJean Nicot,ambassadorfromFranceto Portugal,sentslipsoftobaccoto CatherinedeMedicithatFrance tooktosmoking.TheAmbassa-

dorrecommendeditasacurefor ringworm,ulcerandcancer. Takingtobaccoassnuff,the Queenlikeditsowellthewhole courtsoonwtassniffing,andto honourJeanNicot,thenewtoy waschristened"Nicotina."

FIRSTSYMPHONYCONCERT OFTHESEASON

TheAustralianBroadcasting CommissionpresenteditsfirstSymphvyConcertofthe1949 seasonattheCapitolTheatreon SaturdayandMonday,May21st. and23rd.Thattheconcert shouldberepeatedisahearteningindicationthatorchestral musicisgraduallywinningits, rightfulplaceinthelifeofour community.Thenextthingto bedesiredisthatthehallshould hefilledonthesecondnight. This,alas,wasfarfromthecase.

Sufficienttimehaselapsedsince theappontmentofMr.Kripsas permanentconductortoevaluate theresultsofhiswork.One noticesimmediatelythatthereis nottheusualrustinessinthe performanceoftheextraplayersthatusuallyintrudesitself uponone'sattentionatthefirst concertoftheseason.Theplayingwasaccurateandcleanlyundercontrol.Technicallytheorchestrahasadvancedconsiderably,thoughtheabsenceof someofthewoodwindandthe makeshiftreplacementbyothers andthehelpofapianowascertainlyregrettable,Butthatis anotherstory.

Theorchestragavelifetothe wittygaietyofVaughanWilliams'"Wasps"overture,even thoughoneofthewaspsseemed tohavecausedalittlecommotion intheswarmthatthescoredoes notaccountfor.Smetana's °Vltava"winsremarkableforthe verygoodtoneandbalanceachieved;therewasexcellenttonecolourandwarmdynamiceffects.

Themajororchestralworkfor thenightwas"Scheherazade," byRimsky-Korsakov.Mr.Krips' interpretation,whilehavingthe clear-cutprecisionwehavelearnedtoexpectfromhim,wasmore matter-of-factthanonewould haveexpectedfromaconductor ofMr.Kripstemperament.Possiblytheabsenceofessential wood-windinstruments,andthe inadequateweightofthestrings causedtheconductortolose heartsomewhat.Asensitivemusiianwouldcertainlyfeelagood dealofmisgivingabouttryingto producefirst-ratemusicunder such'unsatisfactoryconditions.

VAUGHANHANLY

Thesoloartistforthenight wastheorchestra'sleader, VaughanHanly.Thatheand theorchestracouldgiveusfor thefirsttimeinPerthDelius' lovelyViolinConcertowasbut anotherindicationofwhatprogressmusichasmadeinPerth duringthelastfewyears.Delius' Concertoisnotbyanymeansthe usualtypeofconcerto;thereis noshowybrilliancenoreasy melodicappeal.Itisreflective music,wiherethesoloistisreally Partoftheorchestra,andtechnicaldifficultyisonlymadeto servethemusic'sneeds.While itistechnicallydifficultenough tosatisfyanyvirtuoso,yetnone ofitsmostdifficultpassagesIn anyway"display"theperformer'svirtuosityOntheother handitdemandsgreatmusical sensitiveness,andthisMr.Hanly gaveit,Histonewasbeautiful, andhissolidtechniqueallowed himtogivehimselfentirelyto themusicwithoutpreoccupation aboutitsdifficulties.Thereis alwayssomethingwistfulabout Delius.Itwouldseemthathe yearnedforsomethingwhichhe didnotbelievein,andso,despite itsgreatbeauty,thereisalways somethingoffrustrationinall hismusic,eventhoughattimes itcontainsagreatemotional surge.Mr.Hanlypossessesall thequalitiesthatallowedhimto salvethemusicitsdelicateautumnalbeauty.

Therearesignsofinterestin apermanentorchestraallaround thesedays.Ifevertheneces-

cityofgivingtheSymphonyOr-chestrapermanencewasmade clear,theabsenceofsomany necessaryinstrumentsfromthe orchestraatthelastconcert shouldprovidefoodforthought onthesubject.Becausemost efficientextramembersofthe orchestrawereemployedatanothertheatre,apianohadto providefillingforasymphony orchestra!Asaxaphonehadto makegoodtheabsenceofbassoonsin"Scheherazade"(more satisfactorythanonewould haveexpected,however).There wereonlytwobasses,insufficient cellos,andtherewereothergaps intheranks,Theseareoften likelytobethefateoftheorchestraunlesstheseplayersare

givenpermanentworkintheorchestra.Then,ofcourse,there isnoneedtostressthefactthat onlyregularpracticebypermanentplayerscanformareallyfirst-classsymphonyorchestra.

WhileIndia'snationalpolitical leadersgenerallyproclaimapolicyofseparationofChurchand Stateandmaintainthatthe Stateshouldnot'interfereinthe religiousdomain,thereareinstancesoflocalpoliticiansseekingtohamperthefreedomsof religiousgroups.

OnesuchinstancewastherecentintroductionofaBillinthe BombayProvincialLegislature here,whichwouldprohibitthe Churchfromusingitspenaltyof excommunication.TheBillwas introducedbyMorarjiDesai, whostatedthat.itoughttobe passed"intheinterestsoflibertyandfundamentalprinciples ofcitizenship."Evenif"oppressivemeasureslikeexcommunication"arestilltolerated by"illiterateorsuperstitious" peopleto-day,hesaid,a"paternalgovernment"shouldnottoleratesuchastateofaffairs.

DuringdebateontheBillanothermemberofthelegislature declaredeveniftherewasjustificationforsuchapenaltyinthe past,itwaslackingto-daybecausewiththearrivalofthe supremestatesuchapower couudbevestedonlyintheState andnotinanyreligioushead.
