TOKYO.-Across400yearsand15,000miles,the righthandofXavierreachesoutagaintotouchthehandiworkofXavier.Areliquarycontainingtherightarm ofSt.FrancisXavierarrivedherefromRomeforcelebrationsmarkingthefourthcentenaryoftheSaint'scomingtoJapan.Sunday,May29,sawthebeginningof thecelebrationsinNagasaki,theoldChristiancentre, sceneofsixteenthcenturymartyrdomsandtargetofthe twentiethcenturyatombomb.

Takingtheformofapilgrimage,thecelebrationswilllast twoweeks,reachingtheirclimax onSunday,June12,withaPontificalMassinTokyo'svastMeiji Stadium.

AllJapanisinterestedinthe centenary.Evennon-Christians realisethehistoricsignificanceof Xavier'scomingtoJapaninthe yearof1549,Hewasthefirst tointroduceJapantotheoutsideworldandtheoutsideworld toJapan.TheJapaneserecognisethattheFaithheplanted herehassurvivedwithmarvellousvitalityandheroicfruits, whereinevennon-Christianstake pride.

COLOGNE,May12.-ExperimentsrecentlycarriedoutatSt. FrancisHospitalhere,underthe directionofDr.HermannMoed4 der,whoisinchargeoftheXraydepartment,haveledtothe conclusionthatChristdiedon theCrossfroman"orthostatic collapse"resultingfromacessationofheartandcerebralfunctionswhich,inturn,werecaused byinsufficientbloodcirculation. VATICANCITY,May20.-HopehasbeenexpressedamongVaticanofficialsthatthecauseofBlessed MariaGoretti,Italian-bornmodernmartyrofchastity, willbecompletedintimetocanoniseherduringthe HolyYear,itwaslearnedhere.

Ifsheiscanonisednextyear, herswillbeoneoftheshortest processesonrecordinmodern times.BlessedMariadiedin 1902indefenceofherchastity. Hermother,fbrother,twosisters,oneofthemanun,andthe manwhoattackedherarestill alive.

TheChurch'spointofview abouttheuseoftobaccoisin.. eludedintheattitudethatallthe thingsGodmadeandputatthe disposalofmanaretobeused asHeintended,moderatelyand suitably,withprofitandenjoyment,andthatbecauseHemade thesethingstheyaregood Socialsmoking,asweknowit, isfairlynewintheworld.Not morethanacoupleofhundred yearsagotherewerepeoplewho hadneverheardoftobacco.One ofthemwasaWelshmanwho wentuptoLondononavisit.In atavern,wherehewashaving dinner,hesuddenlysawsmoke comingfromthenoseofthe manopposite. Hesnatchedup hismugofaleandthrewitin theman'sface,shoutingexcited prayers"thatGodwouldquench thelireinsidethecreature's snout."

TobaccoistheAmericanIndian'sgifttotheworld,butits foundingfathersdidn'tsmokeit exclusivelyforpleasure,aswe do.Tribalritualscentredina pipe,andwhiletheRedskinsdependeduponitfortheirmoment thatrefreshes,itsreligioussignificancewasamoreimportant consideration.

SymbolofPeace.

Petdiversionaswellasthe mostprofoundritual,smoking wastheIndian'ssymbolofpeace andhispledgeoffriendship.A pipewasabrave'sconstantcompanionduringhislife,and,with histomahawkandwarclub,it sharedhisgraveasacompanion forthehappyhuntingground. Ceremonialsmokewasofferedto trappedanimalswhosepeltsor organstheIndiansneededfor clothingormedicine.Forrituals thetobaccowasadifferentkind fromthatsmokedforthefun ofit.Intertribalcustomsvaried, too.Sometribesusedwildtibacco;othersrefuseditbecause itmighthavecomefromthe burialplacesofthedead. Amongstthosetribesthatcultivatedtobaccoforreligiouspurposes,theceremonialsofselectingsuitabletypes,mixingseed, plantingandtendingthecrop, wereasprofoundasamedicine mancouldmakethem Europe'sfirst'pipeswere broughttherebytheSpaniards, whohadsailedwithColumbus.

Pipes,Prejudices,Prohibitions andPoultices,

TheEmperorofPersiapunished violatorsofhisbanontobacco byslittingtheirlipstoprevent furthersmokes.TheShah4I,o succeededhimchangedthispenaltyandorderedinsteadthat moltenleadbepoureddownthe throatsofviolators.MuradIV ofTurkeyorderedthedeathperaltyforsmoking,andthenosss ofthosewhotooksnuffsnipped off.

OnePapalNunciotoLisbon, impressedbythecurativepropertieshehadfoundintobacco. claimedit"curedsuchmaladies ascolds,catarrh,hoarseness, headache,paininthestomach, lungsandchest."

Tobaccoleafpoulticesandtcbaccojuicebecametheasprins andalkaseltzersoftheirage. OnebuccaneerreportedtheFloridaIndianscouldlivefouror livedayswithouteating,aslong astheyweresmoking.

Nicotine.

Itwasin1559.whenJean Nicot,ambassadorfromFranceto Portugal,sentslipsoftobaccoto CatherinedeMedicithatFrance tooktosmoking.TheAmbassa-

dorrecommendeditasacurefor ringworm,ulcerandcancer. Takingtobaccoassnuff,the Queenlikeditsowellthewhole courtsoonwtassniffing,andto honourJeanNicot,thenewtoy waschristened"Nicotina."

WhentheGreatPlaguehit Londonin1665,smokingin schoolbecameanobligation,in thebeliefitwasaprotection againstcontagionThethree "r's"wererecitedinablinding fogandchildrenwerewhipped whocametoschoolwithouttheir pipes.Butonlytenyearsbefore,Englishschoolmastershad beenforbiddentosmokeatany time,bytherulesofChigwell PublicSchoolwhichdeclared: "Theschoolmastermustbea manofsoundreligion,neithera PapistnoraPuritan,ofagrave behaviourandsoberandhonest conversation;notipplerorhaunterofalehousesandnopufferof tobacco."

Cigarettes.

Warshavebeengoodtothe tobaccoindustry.Thefirstcigarerewasawarproduct,made byanEgyptiansoldierin1832, whenhestuffedareedwith crushedtobacco.Thecigarettes wereimmediatelypopular,and thedemandduringtheSouthAfricanwarwassogreatthatonly machinescouldsupplyit.

WhileRaleighWasprobably thefirstwhitemantopuffat hispipeuptoaminutebefore helaidhisheadontheexecutioner'sblock,theIndianshad atraditionthatthemanwho smokedjustbeforehedied wouldgodirectlyandswiftlyto theGreatSpirit,andthatwithoutgenerousofferingsoftobaccoatafuneral,thedeadman's ghostwouldnotbestrongenough tostartoutonthelongjourney thatallIndianspiritsmusttr.vel.

FirstEuropeanpipesmereso rareandcostlythatonewas usuallysharedbyseveralmen, whowouldtaketurnspuffin?. Ordinarypipes,madeofawalnutshellfittedwithastemof straw,wereusedbytheswashbucklingsailorswhohadbeen acrosstheoceanandlearnedto smokefirsthandfromtheIndians.Aristocratsusedsilver pipes.

SmallclaypipesfoundinRomangravesinIrelandandEnglandbaffledtheexpertstothe extentthatsomeonesettledtheir probableidentitybycallingtheyn "fairy"pipes.

Nooneknowshowmanyof thesepriestsarestillalive.Of themanywhohavebeenswallowedupbehindtheIronCurtain,nowordhascomeforyears Afewhavebeenreporteddefinitelyputtodeath.Othersare scatteredaroundtheglobein China,NorthandSouthAmerica,BelgiumandFrance. Theirsisauniquemission; noreturnispemitted,novisible successislikelyforyearsto come.Therearefewtospeak for-them,fewtosupportandencouragethemand,itcouldbe, onlyafewtoprayforthemin theirexile,theirlongnightof waiting.Theylive,study,pray andlabourasOrientalpriests withtherichgloryoftheancient riteofSt.BasilandSt.John Chrysostomtoinspirethemand tounitetheirheartswithGod. TheyknowRussiansandlove themwithaloveonlyapriest whohasdedicatedhislifeinthe faceofdangerandforevercan know.

But,humanlyspeaking,theso menarealoneascatteredhandful.ThespreadingtideofCommunismissuchablackmountainouswaveofdisappointment andfrustrationthattheyneed specialprayersto-day.Their workshouldbeknownandprayersforthesuccessoftheirmissionshouldascenddailytoGod.

IftheRussianpeopleonly knewthesemen,howtheywould lovethemTheyareaninter estinggroup,Letmetellyou aboutafew.Imustbecareful aboutnamessothatnoharmwil cometothemfromtheCommunistswhosurroundsomeofthem asIwrite.

TherewasFatherWalter(let's callhimthat).HewasanAmericanboyfromthecoalmine townsofPennsylvania.

This,alas,wasfarfromthecase.

Sufficienttimehaselapsedsince theappontmentofMr.Kripsas permanentconductortoevaluate theresultsofhiswork.One noticesimmediatelythatthereis nottheusualrustinessinthe performanceoftheextraplayersthatusuallyintrudesitself uponone'sattentionatthefirst concertoftheseason.Theplayingwasaccurateandcleanlyundercontrol.Technicallytheorchestrahasadvancedconsiderably,thoughtheabsenceof someofthewoodwindandthe makeshiftreplacementbyothers andthehelpofapianowascertainlyregrettable,Butthatis anotherstory.

Theorchestragavelifetothe wittygaietyofVaughanWilliams'"Wasps"overture,even thoughoneofthewaspsseemed tohavecausedalittlecommotion intheswarmthatthescoredoes notaccountfor.Smetana's °Vltava"winsremarkableforthe verygoodtoneandbalanceachieved;therewasexcellenttonecolourandwarmdynamiceffects.

Themajororchestralworkfor thenightwas"Scheherazade," byRimsky-Korsakov.Mr.Krips' interpretation,whilehavingthe clear-cutprecisionwehavelearnedtoexpectfromhim,wasmore matter-of-factthanonewould haveexpectedfromaconductor ofMr.Kripstemperament.Possiblytheabsenceofessential wood-windinstruments,andthe inadequateweightofthestrings causedtheconductortolose heartsomewhat.Asensitivemusiianwouldcertainlyfeelagood dealofmisgivingabouttryingto producefirst-ratemusicunder such'unsatisfactoryconditions.

WhileIndia'snationalpolitical leadersgenerallyproclaimapolicyofseparationofChurchand Stateandmaintainthatthe Stateshouldnot'interfereinthe religiousdomain,thereareinstancesoflocalpoliticiansseekingtohamperthefreedomsof religiousgroups.

OnesuchinstancewastherecentintroductionofaBillinthe BombayProvincialLegislature here,whichwouldprohibitthe Churchfromusingitspenaltyof excommunication.TheBillwas introducedbyMorarjiDesai, whostatedthat.itoughttobe passed"intheinterestsoflibertyandfundamentalprinciples ofcitizenship."Evenif"oppressivemeasureslikeexcommunication"arestilltolerated by"illiterateorsuperstitious" peopleto-day,hesaid,a"paternalgovernment"shouldnottoleratesuchastateofaffairs.
