PopePiusXII.hasaddressedaletter.totheGerman Hierarchyexpressing"intenseinterest"andvoicing "growingconcern"overthedifficultiesthathavearisenin connectionwiththeconstitutionforWesternGermany thatwasapprovedbytheProvisionalAssemblyinBonn onthe9th.inst.Thetextoftheletterwasreleasedby HisEminenceJosefCardinalFrings,Archbishopof Cologne.

Pointingoutthatthefreedom ofreligiouseducation,therecognitionoftheGermanConcordat withtheHolySeeandrelated issuesareatstake,thePope's letter,withaclearreference'A) theattitudeoftheSocialistmembersoftheBonnassembly,continuesasfollows:

"We,whofeelboundtothe Germanpeople,initspresent plightandhumiliation,withunchangingaffection,andwant;t tobecomearespected,healthy andefficientmemberofapeacefulfamilyofnations,couldnot begrievedmoredeeplybyanythingthanbytherealisation thatsomegroupsinGermany wishtoestabli.hthenewculturalorderofeircountryona foundationwhichwould,unwittinglyandunconsciouslymake themapeapoliticalregime,now defunct,which-asidefromother deplorableaspects-stoodoutbecauseofitssystematicdisregard ofnaturalandreligiousrights. andopenlybrokesolemnengagements."

Thecompromisereachedbetweenthevariousfactionsat Bonn,whichpavedthewayfor theadoptionofthenewconstitu tion,providesforcertainsafeguardsleavingtheultimatedecisionregardingtheConcordat andotherprovisionsconsidered essentialbytheChurchtothe futureGermanParliament.Pendingitsestablishment,boththe national(Reich)Concordatand theexistingconcordatswithin-

dividual'GermanStates,areto remaininforce. However,inapreviousdraft ofthiscompromise,theSocialistshadeliminatedvirtually eeryprovisionconsideredessentialbytheChristianchurches inthereligiousandeducational field,TheHolyFather'sletter aas,therefore,consideredhere mosttimelybybothProtestant andCatholicleaders,whose handsarethusstrengthened whilethesevitalissuesremain atstake.

TheSocialists,whoare'the strongestpoliticalgroupinwesternGermany,andvirtuallyhold amajoritycontrollingtheconstitutionalassembly,haveagain shownthemselvesasbeingopenlyopposedtoChristianprinciples.Theirstand,itissaid here,may,however,openthe eyesofmanyoftheirsupporters, particularlyinsuchstrongholds astheRhinelandandWestphalia, whicharepredominantlyCatho. lic.

Oneofthemoreunreasonable objectionsbeingmadeespecially intheUnitedStates,againstinternationalisingJerusalegi, is thattheHolyCitywouldthen becomeafinancialburdenonthe UnitedNationsandtherestof theworld.

Thosewhoallegethisobjection,eitherconsciouslyorunconsciously,overlookthefollowingfacts:

(1)Asthesanctuarysacred tothethreegreatmonotheism religions,Christianity,MohammedanismandJudaism,itisone of..thegreatesttouristattractions,holdingareligiousappeal for850millionpeople,one-third oftheworld'spopulation.

(2)WhileJerusalemisnota manufacturingcentre,itdoes producealargenumberofreligiousitemswhichbringconsiderablewealthintothecity.

(3)Therearemanyreligious institutionsintheHolyCity whichChristiansthroughoutthe worldhavelongsupportedwith agenerositythatonlyreligious sentimentcaninspire.

(4)UnderastableU.N.government,Jerusalem's"million dollar"climatewouldattract manysettlerswhowouldbring withthemlargeamountsofcapitalforpermanentinvestment.

(5)Jerusalemhasalwaysbeen aprosperouscity,andevenunderTurkishandespeciallyBritishadministration,needednofinancialbacking.

HereinSingaporethenuns, numberingabout70,conducta dayschoolfor1,800girls,a boardingschoolfor200,anorphanagewithfacilitiesfor200 girls,andafoundlinghomewhich receivesabout40babiesamonth. MotherTarsiciushasreceivedthe OrderoftheBritishEmpirefor herwork.

Ofspecialinterestisthe foundlinghome. Everyday new-bornbabies,thrownaway bythepaganChinese,finda homeattheconvent,Theycome fromantheaps,dustbins,re liftinpaperbagsattheconvent door,orfoundbythepolicein theslums.Usuallyneardeath whentheyreachtheconvent,the majorityofthemlivejustlong enoughtobebaptised,andthus besenttoheaven.Thiscorrespondentbaptisedtenofthem whileconductinganeight-dayretreatforthenuns.Onlyoneof thebabies,practicallyalways girls,livedmorethanaweek,

Itisnoeasytasktodowhat Mr.Bowershasdone.Alesser spiritwouldquailbeforetheimmenselabourinvolved,tosay nothingofshrinkingfromthe weightofcontumelythatmight easiybeheapeduponhisoffendingheadinanumberofholes andcorners-forMr.Bowershas sometimesoffendedwithhiscausticcriticalcommentsinthevery fieldsofartisticendeavourin whichhenowstrugglestodo somethinghimself.SuchcarefreetriflingwithFatecompels ouradmiration.

Thestrengthoftheplayisin it.tail,andthesuccessofthe playiswhollydependentondramaticworking,outoftheplot.In thisregardMr.Bowerswaswell servedbyPatriciaSkevington andBettyBaheninthefinal scene,whenahighdegreeof dramaticintensitywasreached.

Thepenultimatescene,between MissSkevingtonandFrank O'Grady,wasalsowelldone,and servedasagooddramaticapproachtothepowerfulclimax InthissceneMr.O'Gradyrevealedunsuspettedpotentialities asadeep-dyedvillain;thoughan habitualtightnessofmanner, evidentbothinspeechandmovement,threatenedtomakehis performancemelodramatic.Such tightnessprolongstensionbeyendreasonablelimitsandresultsinlackofconviction,Miss Skevingtonprovidedasteadying influenceinthisscene.

ProductionDetails.

Theproductionwascapably handled.Entrancesandexits weremadesmoothly,andconversationneverlagged.Movementsweregenerallynaturaland convenient;thoughtherewas roomforimprovementinthis matter.Forexample,itwas noticeablethatpeoplesometimes mademovementsaimlessly,when restlessnesswasnotcalledfot bytheactionoftheplay.Rather muchusewasmadeofsprawling inthesofa-oftenforonlyafew seconds.LionelNorthoverallowedusmoretimethanweneededtostudytherearofhis anatomy,hishandsinhispocketsthewhile.ItbecameirksometoseeBettyBahencarried aboutthestageasifshewerean infant.Evencripplesandinvalidshavetheirownmeansof gettingabout.Andwhilelistingannoyances,wemustmentionalsothatthenoiseofheavy boots.onbareboardsisveryirritating.Itwasareliefwhen Mr.Bowersdonnedrubbersoles. Atmosphericmusicbetween sceneswasdispensedfromrecords.Thoughgenerallys'uit,able,ittendedtobetooloudand

harsh.Alittlemorelightness, particularlybeforethefirstact, wouldhavebeenwelcome.Perhapstheintroductorymusic couldhaveservedtobuildupthe illusionthatthescenewasset nearsnow-coveredKosciusko, wherewintersportswereinprogress.AsIrememberit,the musiclaidemphasisfromthe firstonimpendingtragedy.Yet therewasnothingintheplayto suggestthisbeforewereached ActIII.

WeaknessinConstruction.

Ithasbeennotedthattheplay reliedmostlyonitsplottoarouse andmaintaininterest.Thisis characteristicof"thrillers,"but itisagoodthingwhenotheringredients,suchashumourand attractivecharacterisation,are alsopresent.Theywereconspicuousbytheirabsenceinthis play.Notoneofthecharacters wasinterestingforhisorher ownsake;theywereallonlyinterestinginsofarastheyadvancedtheplot;andthiswas evolved rather laboriously throughmanytwistsandturns ofcircumstancesbearingtheimprintofartificiality.The.first twoactsweredull.

The'dialoguewasnotdistinguished.Ratherdiditsuffer fromtoomuchfreedomwith slang,,andatleastoneatrocious punpoppedout(abouta"drip") whichwasmadeworsebythe fact.thatitseemedtobeintend. eclasapieceofsmartwriting.

ThehomelinessofMr.Bowers' dialogueismatchedbythe "modernism"ofhischaracters. Theyareyoungpeoplesuchas wemightencounteratScarboroughinthesummer,Theyare whollyconcernedwiththeir maritalandextra-maritalsex troubles.Theymaybetrueto life,butthatdoesnotnecessarilymaketheminterestingonthe stage.Infact,theyonlydemonstratehowtawdrysuchreallifesituationscanappeartodisinterestedonlookers.ActsI.and IIarefulloftrivialbickerings hichbecomesveryboring.Itis inActIII.thattheplayitself reallycomestolife.

TheActing.

Ithinkitmaybefairlysaid thatcompetentactingliftsthis playoutofthedoldrums.The castisstrong,anditisevident thattheplayhasbeenwellrehearsed.InActIIItheplayers havesomethingsolidtobiteon, andconsequentlyagoodfinal impressionismadeontheaudience.Suchsuccess,thoughbe. latedcoversamultitudesofsins, Ihavementionedthesterling workofBettyBahenandPat Skevington.TogetherwithMr. O'Grady,theyprovidethehighlightsoftheplay.Mr.Bowers himselfregistersasmoothperformance,andsoalsodoesLionel Northover,JudithBahenhad verylittletodo.Theremainingmen-JohnGill,RoyKellard, andCedricStump-arefluentbut unimpressiveinroleswhichfortunatelydonotcountforagreat deal;thoughmuchmorecould bemadeoftheseroleswith benefittotheplayasawhole.It mightbeanimprovement,forexample,toseeLester(JohnGill) orBerridge(CedricStump)asa truly.comiccharacter.Thepossibilitiesalreadyexistinthe script, -DEGUSTIBUS.

IhavereferredtoTherryas aCatholictheatricalgroup. Thisstatementisperhapsalittle misleading,fortheTherrySocietyisprimarilyabranchof CatholicAction,whoseprincipal externalactivityisinthefield ofDrama.Inotherwords,we regardthespiritualsideofthings asbeingofmoreultimateimportdncethanthetemporal.
