LastweekIwasdiscussingin thesecolumnstheextentto whichgovernmentalactionwas necessaryorjustifiableinregard totheCommunistParty.Duringthepastweektherehasbeen anextensionofaparticularly nastyallairwhichcommenced threeyearsagoandinwhichthe StateGovernmentmightfindit advisabletoconsiderwhatpow-' ersithasandwhetheritisexpedienttousetheminthisinstance.
TheactivitiesofanorganisationknownastheCommittee fortheDefenceofNativeRights cameprominentlybeforethe publicnoticethreeyearsago, whenamemberoftheirorganisationwasfinedforhavingincitedstationnativesinthePilbarradistricttoleavetheirlawfulservicewithouttheconsent ofaprotectorofaborigines.
ThismanwasaprofessionalagitatoroftheCommunistParty, andasaresultofhismischievousactivitysome800natives lefttheiremploymentonthe stationsandsetup"co-operative"settlements-oneatthe12.mile,PortHedland,andthe otheratMoolyella,nearMarble Bar.
Oneunfortunateresultofthis socialdislocationwastheembroilmentonanAnglicanclergyman,whoseidealismsooutran hisdiscretionthatheranfoulof theLaw,andwhatwasworse lentaidandcomforttothe CommunistParty,whichunder theguiseofhumanitarianism, wasintentonmakingpolitical capitaloutofthenatives.
Thesameagitatorisapparentlyactiveagain,asrecentdisturbancesreportedfromthe Northindicate,Unhappily,it isagainthenativeswhosuffer whilethewhilemalcontentgoes scotfree.Itisacuriousphe-
nomenonwhichwehavenoted regardingalltheactivityofthis "workingclassmovement"-that theworkersinevitablysufferthe odiumandtheloss;theonlyadvantageaccruestotheCommunistPartybywayofpublicity.
Idon'tknowhowtheCommitteefortheDefenceofNative Rightsisfaringatthemoment, orwhetheritstillsupportsthe fieldworkofMcLeod,or whethertheclergymenandother respectabledupesoftheCommunistPartyarestillwillingto servetheirpurpose,butIdo knowthatsomeactionshould betakentostopthedepletionof thenaturallabourresourcesof thepastoralindustryandthe exploitationofthenativesbythe CommunistParty.
Ihavenotatanytimemaintainedthatthenativesengaged inthepastoralindustryarereceivingallthatsocialjusticedemands.Iknowaswellasanyonethattherehasbeengrievous exploitationoftheminthepas*. Butitisnodeliveranceforthem tobenowexplotedbytheCommunistParty.Itistruethat nativeshavebeenimprisonedforholdingoutfor30saweek inwages;itisalsotruethat nativessuffergaolbecausethey weredupedbyCommunistswho asmuchas30 pence. Asforthe"co-operative" campsandsettlements,Ihaveit ongoodauthoritythatthestrikingnativeshaveboughtthemselvesapiginapoke.Many ofthemliveonthevergeof starvation,allinsqualor.Itis onlyunremittingagitationwhich keepsthestrikefromdisintegrating.Onewondershowmuch moneythewealthyCommunist Partyputsintothemaintenance ofthemiserablesystemithas createdfortheseunfortunate aborigines.
WhenThePresidentPrays
DuringtheweekitwasreportedthatPresidentTruman hadmadeaverysoundandcommendablestatementonthesubjectofdivineworship.Accordingtothereports,hetolda groupofchurchpresseditors: "ThePresidenthastobevery carefulwhenhegoestochurch thathegoesforthepurposeof worshippingGodandnotforthe purposeofbeingacircus.A greatmanypeople,iftheyfind thatthePresident-notHarry Truman,butthePresident-is goingtobeinchurch,willgo, too,Thatisnottherightframe ofmindinwhichtogotochurch. Idonotcatertothatsortof programme.IgobecauseI wanttogoandbecauselthink Ioughttogo,andnotforthe purposeofmakingashow." Thereisagreatdealtoponder inthatforthrightstatement.
Foronething,weareentitledto begladthatamanofsuchpower andprestigeasthePresidentof theUnitedStatesrealiseshis placeintheplanofcreationthat,basically,heisacreature, restinginthepalmofGod'a hand,andthatheowestoGod everythingthathehasandis. Hencehefeelstheneedandthe dutyofworshippingGodaccordingtohisconscience.
Wearelikewisefortunatein theEnglishRoyalFamily,who, beingineverywaymodernand
Evenwherethistypeofexhibitionismisnotpresent,the frivolous,"modish"outlookof someill-instructedCatholicsleads themtoeschewthebeautiful andrichly-blessedNuptialMass infavourofamorefashionable eveningwedding.Thereis,in thisoutlook,asuperficiality arisingfromignorance,whichis disturbing.Onefearsthatthey mayleantowhatismerelymomentarilyprevalentinthefield
ofmorals.
Finally,letushopeandpray thatagreatmanymorepeople willfollowtheirleaders(from puremotives)inthematterof church-going.Itistheonly remedyforthediseaseofmaterialism,andevenapartialChristianityisbetterthannone,for thereisatleastsomekindof afoundationuponwhichsomethingmoreextensiveandcompletemaysometimebebuilt.

up-to-date,donotregardreligionasanout-modedthing,but gotochurchwiththesimplicity andgoodheartoftheirsubjects. Suchanexamplemustcount foragreatdealinthesesad times,whenmaterialismand hedonismthriveeverywhere withsucharrogance.Itisan examplethatisworthathousandsermons,andwemaybe surethatGod'sblessingand supportwillbewiththenations whopubliclyacknowledgeHis sovereigntyandseekHisaid.
Ontheotherhand,itisunhap- pilytruethatsomepeoplewill gotochurchrathertoseethe PresidentthantoworshipGod, Theirintentionsarenotrightor pleasingtoGod.Andeven amongCatholicsitistobefearedthatinthematterofmarriagesomethingofthisfrivolous attitudeofmindexists,Weneed toremindourselvesthatmarriageisagreatandsplendidsacrament,devisedbyChristtoenablehusbandandwifetolivetogetherinfidelityandhappiness, andtobringuptheirchildrenin thefearandloveofGod.Hence theritualsurroundingthecelebrationofmarriageissolemn andsacred,andconducteither onthepartofthepartiesconcernedorofthecongregation whichtendstoturnitintoa fashionparadeoratheatrical spectacle,istobereprobatedas aformofimpiety.

Bornin1875,DeanGilroywas educatedatCavanCollegeand atSt.Patrick's,Carlow.He receivedtheholypriesthoodat thelatterin1902.VolunteeringfortheAustralianmission, hearrivedatFremantleinApril, 1903,andreceivedhisfirstappointmentintheDioceseto BoulderCity,wherehelaboured forfouryears.
In1907hewasmadeparish priestofMenzies,andremained thereforthreeyears.Hisnext fieldofactivitywasCollie, wherehewasstationedfrom

Youchapshaveawonderfultime;sometimesIwishthatI hadbeenapriestmyself."Not onlydotheysayit,butwhatis worse,manyofthembelieveit. Ionceaskedapriesthowheex- plainedthiscuriousattitude. Helaughed,andsaidthatthe priestintheparishwaslikea person's.heartorlung.It's thereallright,workingsteadilyallthetime,butneveradvertisingitspresence.

Self-preservationisoneofthe firstlawsofnature,anditimpliesalegitimateself-love;forit wedidnotloveourselves,we couldnotcontinuetolive.Our DivineLordremindedustolove ourneighboursasweloveourselves.Self-love,knowingit cannotexistbyitselfanymore thanthestomachcanexistmethoutfood,extendsitselfinone directionbytheacquiringof knowledge;andthemorewe knowofthetruth,themoreour personalityisdeveloped.
Weescapethelimitationsof thebodyinanotherdirectionby theexpansionofourfleshinthe procreationofotherpersonalities.Lovealwaystendstoan incarnation Inorderthathumanlifemightbepreservedand continued,Godimplantedtwo greatappetitiesandpleasuresin man.Oneisthepleasureof eatingtopreservethecorporal lifeoftheindividual;theother isthepleasureofmarriageto preservethelifeoftherace.
OwnershipFostersFreedom.
Thethirdwayofperfecting mr.elvesisthroughtheownershipofthings.Justasweare freeontheinsidebecausewe rancalloursoulourown,sowe scanttobefreeontheoutside bycallingpossessionsourown. Personalorprivateownershipis naturaltoman;itistheeconomicguaranteeoffreedom,asthe soulisitsspiritualguarantee.
Thehumanpersonisrestless untilitperfectsitsmindin knowledge,orgeneratesitskind inmarriage,orassuresitseconomicsecuritythroughthings. Wherethendoesabnormality arise,ifthesepursuitsarenatural?Howcouldtheycausea psychosisoranxietyoracomplexanymorethantheeyedoes inseeingortheearinhearing?
Ifwewereanimals,thesepursuitstowardperfectionwould, indeed,nevercausedisturbance, forananimal'sdesirecanbe fullysatisfied;butman'scannot, forman'simpulsesandpassions aresubjecttohiswill.Hecan misusehispassionsandmake thenendshithemselves.
Sel-love,whichisgood,canbe nervertedtoself-adoration,in whichonesays:"Iammyown law,myowntruth,myownstandardNobodycantellmeanything.WhateverIcallrightIS right;whatIcallwrongIS wrong.Therefore,IamGod." Thisisthesinofpride,theperversionofself-loventoegotism.

Suchundueself-inflationisone oftheprincipalcausesofunhappiness,Theegotistwalks warily,inconstantdangerof havinghisfalsevaluesdestroyed. Thesexinstinct,whichisgood, canalsobeperverted.Inthe, daysofpaganRomesomecorruptindividualsattendedbssiquets,gorgedthemselveswith food,tickledtheirthroats,disgorgedthefood,andthenwent backandatemore.Thiswas wrongbecause,.asreasontold them,oneeatstoliveandthe pleasuremustnotbeseparated fromitsfunction.Inlikemanner,whenthefiresoflifeare arouseddeliberatelynottolight newtorchesoflife,buttoscorch theflesh,thereisthesinoflust.

NordoestheChurchbecomea monomaniacandbelievethatsex istheonlyinstinctamanhas,or thatallotherinstinctsaretobe interpretedintermsofsex, Rather,withadeeperunderstandingofhumannature,she saysthatthecravingforperfectionisbasicandthatsexisonly oneofthethreewaysinwhich arelativeperfectionisachieved inthislife,
Where,then,didthesexfanaticsgettheideathattheChurch istheenemyofsex?Theygotitfromtheirinabilitytomakea distinction-adistinctionbetweenuseandabuse.Because theChurchcondemnstheabuse ofnature,sexfanaticsthinkthat theChurchcondemnsnatureitself,Thisisuntrue.Farfrom slightingthevalueofthehuman body,theChurchdignifiesit.It issurelynoblertosay,withthe Christian,thatthebodyisa TempleofGod,thantosay,with somemodernminds,thatmanis merelyabeast.
TheChurchdoes,ofcourse, speakofsininthedomainofsex, asitspeaksofsininthedomainofpropertyorofsininthe areaofself-love.Butthesin doesnotlieintheinstinctorthe passionitself.Ourinstinctsand ourpassionsareGod-given;the sinliesintheirperversion.Sin isnotinhunger,butingluttony. Sinisnotintheseekingofeconomicsecurityutinavarice. Sinisnotindrink,butindrunkenness.Sinisnotinrecreation, butinlaziness.Sinisnotin theloveortheuseoftheflesh, butinlust,whichisitsperver- sion. Anundueconcentrationuponasingleoneoflife'sactivities tendstomakeamanabnormal throughlopsidednessofinterest. Thisisespeciallytrueofanexcessivepreoccupationwiththe carnal.Ittendstomakewhat isphysicalpsychic,bytracing backeverythingtoasingleinstinct.Sexinotherageswas physical;itresultedinnewlife.
Seriouseffectsresultfrom thismechanisationandthewhole tendencytoover-specialisationin modernlife.Thesetwophenomenaofourtimesarebothrelatedtotheanalytichabitof mind,imposedbythefashion1 apredominantlyscientificapproachintheintellectualworld. Everythingisviewedinisolation bymodernman,becausethis methodisthelegitimateprocedureofscience.Butthereare fieldswihereastudyoftheunit tornfromitscontextceasestobe adequate,Thestudyoflifeitselfhasbeguntosufferbyan excessiveuseofanalysis,
Thesexdriveinmanisatno momentaninstinctalone.Desirefromitsbeginningisinformedwithspirit,andneverisone experiencedapartfromthe other.Thepsychicandthephysicalinterplay.Justasthe idealists,whodenytheexistence ofmatter,sinagainsttheflesh, sothesensualistsandcarnalists sinagainstthespirit.Butto betrayeitheraspectistoinvite revenge.

NewEthicsforaMinority?
Ontheotherhandthesex fanaticsarenotonlynon-religious persons,butusuallyanti-religiouspersons.Itiscuriousto hearsuchmenurgethatwe oughttorepudiateChristian moralityanddevelopanew ethicstosuittheunethicallives ofafewthousandindividuals theyhavepolled.Becausestatisticianscanfind5,000living carnallives,itissuggestedthat theiridealshallbemadethe universalideal.Anequalnumberofcasesoflockjawcouldbe foundintheUnitedStates;one wondersiflockjawshouldthereforebemadeaphysicalstandard ofhealth?
Sinsdonotbecomevirtuesby beingwidelypractised.Rightis stillrightifnobodyisright, andwrongiswrongifeverybody iswrong.Somehavecontendedthatsexaberrationsareas commonasthecommoncold; butnobodyhassofaraskedus toconsiderthecoldnormaland desirable.
