Sir,-Whereistheblastof righteousindignationthatone wouldexpectfromFrancisGilbertwhentheStatepublishedits "house-purchase"planfortenantsofGovernmenthouses?

TheStateGovernmenthasofferedtoselltotheirtenantsthe housestheyoccupy,andthatin itselfiscommendable,sinceno familycanhaverealsocialsecuritywhiletheroofoveritshead isthepropertyofanother.But thebasisofsaleiswhatone wouldexpectfromablack-marketerratherthanfromaselfstyledLiberalGovernment.

Houseswhichmayhavebeen builtanythinguptothreeyears agoarenowbeingofferedattheir valuationasatJanuarylast-a valuegrosslyabovetheiractual cost.And.that"bargain"is availableonlyifacceptedby nextMonday-aLentenspecial, sinceafterthatdatesaleswillbe effectedonlyatcurrentvaluations whichwillbeevenhigher,dueto theStateGovernment'sfailure tocontrolprices.Homeownershipwillbeimpossibleformany hundredswliGnowtoccupytheir housesonhYrdshipgrounds.

Notmanywouldcomplainif theStateadoptedthehardbusiness-likeattitudeofsellingatactualcostlessdepreciationto date.Ifitalsoallowedarebate ofthecapitalportionoftherent alreadypaidonemightsuspect thattheLiberalsreallybelieved intheirownplatform,

Inadditiontothisrental scheme,theCommonwealthpeggedinterestonloansforhousing atamaximumof4ipercent., anditselfloanedmoneythrough theCommonwealthBankat31 percent.fortheerectionof homes.Butthatisnotsoimportant'inW.A,,wheretheLiberalGovernmenthasavirtual Statemonopolyofhousing.Itis veryimportant,however,inthe LabourStates,wherehousebuildingandhouseownershipisencouraged.Theresultisseenin therelativehousingfiguresW.A.hasatargetof3,400(vide StateMinisterforHousing,Hansard,page3,480),whileN.S.W., withonlyfourtimesthepopulation,hasatargetof90,000. Itwillberememberedthatan importantpartofthepresent Government'selectoralsuccess wasduetoitswildpromisesto workwondersinthehousing field.Thatto-dayafternearly fiveyearsofpeace,westillhave amajorhousingproblemisthe Government'sgreatestindictment-Yours,etc., TOMGILHOOLEY.

Sir,-Iwould,onbehalfofthe W.A.OperaSociety,liketothank DeGustibusforhisveryreasonablesummaryoftheSociety'srecentproductionof"LaTraviata." Thesurveywasamostsincere andeminentlyfaircriticismand onethatnoperformercouldpossiblytakeexceptionto.

Unfortunately,inanotherarticle,hecompletelyspoiltthe wholeeffectbyinsistingthat criticsmustberegardedasinfallibleandcompletelyabovecritic. ism,Thereissomeexcusefor hisfinaldefenceoftheinfallibilityofcritics.Firstly,thefailureofartiststoanswerback gavethecriticsafeelingof smugness,and,secondly,theabsenceformanyyearsinour courts fordamages, duetothelackofinformation amongstartistsastotheirlegal rights.Finally,thefactthat throughouttheCommonwealth to-daytheartistishittingback inallcapitalcities,andarecent legalactionhasdefinitelyputthe windupthecritics.
