Sir,-Iwould,onbehalfofthe W.A.OperaSociety,liketothank DeGustibusforhisveryreasonablesummaryoftheSociety'srecentproductionof"LaTraviata." Thesurveywasamostsincere andeminentlyfaircriticismand onethatnoperformercouldpossiblytakeexceptionto.
Unfortunately,inanotherarticle,hecompletelyspoiltthe wholeeffectbyinsistingthat criticsmustberegardedasinfallibleandcompletelyabovecritic. ism,Thereissomeexcusefor hisfinaldefenceoftheinfallibilityofcritics.Firstly,thefailureofartiststoanswerback gavethecriticsafeelingof smugness,and,secondly,theabsenceformanyyearsinour courts fordamages, duetothelackofinformation amongstartistsastotheirlegal rights.Finally,thefactthat throughouttheCommonwealth to-daytheartistishittingback inallcapitalcities,andarecent legalactionhasdefinitelyputthe windupthecritics.
