Alargefarmwasboughtand convertedintoSt.Patrick'sAgriculturalCollege,withaclericol Superiorandresidentinstructors. LadswhoattendedtheCollege weregivenasolidfieldandtheqretietrainingingoodfarmingtheyweretaughttouseboth bookandplough-andalsoa soundliteraryeducation;andall thisinanatmosphereofCatholic spirituality.

THECREATIONOFSUSPENSE.
Theelementofdramaticsuspenseisfundamentaltodrama. Itmustbesuppliedinthefirst instancebytheplaywright,but itisnonethelessthedutyofthe producertoworkforitatevery pcssihleturn,makinguseofall significantdetailtoensurethat maximumbenefitisobtainedfrom thisverynecessaryiniredient Atmosphere,tempo,movement, orabsenceofmovement,the emotionalpitchofthevoice-all thesemustenterintotheconsiderationsofthevigilantproducer inhisquestformeansofintroducingsuspense.Thinkfora momentoftheopeningof"Macbeth."Theweirdsisters,creatureswho"looknotliketheinhabitantsoftheearth,"arepur- poselyplacedonthestageat curtainrisetoprovideatmosphereandbuildsuspense.They
speakonlyafewlinesbeforethe scenechangesandthedialogue giveawaytotheprosaicutter aicesofbuncan,butwhatan opportunityfortheimaginative Herehecan tobearlightingandsoundeffectswhichimmediatelysetthe moodoftheplayTheaudience i-insuspenseuntilmoreis knownoftheserepulsivehags andtheirpartinthedrama.
DRAMATICCLIMAX.
Anywell-writtenplaypossessesanemotionalrhythm whichissuesatmanypointsin littleclimaxesallleadingtoa finaldominatingclimax.Not onlythefinalcurtainhasits climax,buttheact,thescene,the episodeandoftenthesentence mustbesoregarded.Theproducerhastoanalysetheplay forthesehighlightsandfaithfullyreproducetheminaction. Hereitmaybewelltoadmonish theproducerthathisprimefunctionistointerprettheintention ofanauthortotheaudience.Irrespectiveofhisownviewsinthe matter,hemustbesincereinhis attempttobringaplaytolifetothatlifewhichwasplanned foritbytheauthor.Anything lessthanstrictfidelitytothis principleisanunjustifiableinterferenceinthedomainofthe playwright.Ifaproducerfeels thathehassomethingimportant tosayhimself,heshouldwrite hi:ownplay.
BALANCE.
Thelastfunctionofthepro- duceristopreservebalancein whateverheundertakes.This refersbothtothepartsofthe playandtothecharacters.No sceneshouldbeallowedtodetractattentionfromthemain plot,andnocharactershouldbe allowedtoappearasa'scenestealer."Sincethesympathyof anaudienceisall-importantin theultimatesuccessofthatpiece, theproducermustseetoitthat audiencesympathyisdirectedto therightquarter. Henceitisclearthat,particularlyinyoungpeople, evilpracticesaretheeffect,notsomuchofignoranceof intellectasofweaknessofawillexposedtodangerous occasions.Inaddition,thereisaspecialdangerarising fromattemptsatsexeducationinasecularistatmosphere. Itiswithpleasurethatweare abletoreportanothersatisfact-oryyear'sprogressfortheMissions.Yearby,yearthepeople ofthisArchdiocesearebecomingmoreMission-conscious,and itisedifyingtonotetheirgenerousresponsetothisveryworthyappeal.Thisyear,duetoa changeofpolicy,itwasnecessarytofinalisetheMissionsaffairsbeforeChristmas.Consequentlytheyearconsistedofa littleovertenmonthsOursincere thanksareduetothePriests, BrothersandSisterswhocooperatedsoreadilyandmadeit possibleforustocarryoutthe directionsofNationalHeadquarters.
DuringtheyeartheNational Director,FatherThomas,ofSydneyvisitedtheArchdiocese.His visitwasofgreatpracticalassistance,andhewasabletosolve quiteanumberofproblems.
PROPAGATIONOFTHE FAITH.
DuringtheyearthemembershipofthisSocietyincreased greatly.Everyparishhasimproved,andtheimprovementis dueinlargemeasuretothecooperationoftheparishpriests. TherehasbeenaverymarkedincreaseinthenumberofPerpetualMembers.Quiteanumber ofpeoplehaveenrolleddeceased friendsandrelationsasPerpet. ualMembersofthePropagation oftheFaith.Thisensuresthat foralltimethesedeceased friendsandrelationswillberememberedinthethousandsof Massesandprayersofferedby gratefulMissionariesthroughout theworld.Duetoprintingdifficultiesanddespatchproblems, thedistributionofthemagazine, "CatholicMissions."wasnot good.However,FatherThomas assuresmethathehassolved theseproblems,andthataregulardeliverywillbeafeatureof theyear1949.

ThisSocietycontinuestoflourisheachyear.Thechildrenare veryenthusiastic,andtheymust begivenverygreatcreditfor theirgreatspiritofself-sacrifice andtheirwonderfulgenerosity. In1947thechildren'seffortfor theyearaveraged18.15pence perchild.In1948theaverage ro'eto42.6penceperchild.The peicentageisbasedonanestimateof12,000children,though inpointoffacttheonlychildren whoshareintheworkarethose inourCatholicschools,andthey numberapproximately8,500.The childrenactuallyraised£2,131 18s9d
Thetotalamountraisedforthe Missionsintheyear1948was
£4,3393s9d.Sufficienttribute cannotbepaidtothePriests, BrothersandSistersoftheArchdiocese,fortheirencouragement andsupport-Withhttheir wholeheartedco-operationthis appealcouldneverbeasuccess. Theresponseofthepeopleisa happyomenthattheFaithof theArchdioceseisgenerousand practical.Thereisstillmuch morethatwecando.Fromnow onthecauseoftheMissionsmust neverlookback.Eachyear mustbeanimprovementonits predecessor,andnotuntilwe havetheentireCatholicpopulationoftheArchdiocesepraying forandsupportingtheMissions, canwefeelthatwehavereally succeeded.
