Romans,beloved.sonsanddaughters:

Onceagain,inagraveand grievoushour,thefaithfulpeopleoftheEternalCityhashastenedtoitsBishopandFather. Onceagainthissuperbcolonnade seemsbarelyabletoclaspwith itsgiganticarmsthemultitude that,likewavesmovedbyanirresistibleforce,arewashedupto thethresholdoftheVaticanBasilicatoattendtheMassofExpiation,inthecentralpointof thewholeCatholicworld,andto pouroutthesentimentswith whiohtheirsoulsoverflow. Thesentenceimposed-amidst theunanimouscondemnationof thecivilisedworld-onthebanks oftheDanubeonaneminent CardinaloftheHolyRoman Churchhasstirredonthebanks oftheTiberacryofindignation worthyofthecity.

Butthefactthataregimeadversetoreligionhasthistime smittenaPrinceoftheChurch veneratedbytheoverwhelming majorityofhispeople,isnotan isolatedcase.Itisoneofthe linksofthelongchainofpersecutionswhichsomedictatorial statesarepursuingagainst Christiandoctrineandlife.A commoncharacteristicofthepersecutorsofalltimesisthat,not ccntentviAthcrushingtheirvictimsphysically,theyseekfurther torenderthemdespicableand hatefultothefatherlandandto society.WhodoesnotremembertheRomanMartyrsofwhom Tacitusspeaks,sacrificedunder Neroanddepictedasincendiaries,abominableevildoers,enemiesofthehumankind?(Ann. 15,44),Themodernpersecutorsshowthemselvesdocilepupils ofthatingloriousschool.They copy,sotospeak,theirmasters andmodels,andevensurpass themincruelty,skilfulasthey areintheartofemployingthe mostrecentadvancesofscience andtechniquetotheendofa dominationandanenslavement ofthepeoplesuchaswouldhave beeninconceivableinpasttimes.

Romans,theChurchofChrist followsthepathmarkedoutbytheDivineRedeemerSheknows herselfeternal;sheknowsthst sheesannotperish,thatthemost violenttempestswillnotavailto submergeher;shedoesnotbeg favours.Thethreatsandthe injuriesofterrestrialpowersdo notintimidateher.Shedoes notmeddleinproblemspurely politicalandeconomic,nordoes shedeigntopassjudgmentupon theusefulnessortheharmof oneformofgovernmentoranother.ShegivestoCaesar thatwhichisrightlyCaesarthatwhichisrightfullyCaesar's,butcannotbetrayorabandonthatwhichisGod's.

Nowitiswellknownwhattne totalitarianandanti-religiodt statedemandsandexpectsofher asthepriceofitstoleranceand problematicalrecognition.It wouldlikeaChurchsilentwhen itshouldspeak,aChurchthat woulddimthelightofGod,adaptingittothedesiresofhuman willswhensheshouldloudlyproclaimitanddefendit;aChurch thatdetachesherselffromthe firmfoundationonwhichChrist hasraisedhertosetherselfdown ontheshiftingsandofopinions ofthedayandabandonherself tothecurrent(ofopinion)ofthe moment;aChurchthatdoesnot resistoppressionoftheconscienceanddoesnotwatchoverthe legitimaterightsandthejustlibertyofthepeople;aChurchthat, withindecorousservility,remains aChurchonlywithinthefour wallsofthetemple,forgetting

His Father,AdvocateErnestoPacelli,wasverywellknownintheCatholicworld. FatherAhern,lookingvery wellafterhisholiday,saidthat itwasastrangefactthatjust twelvemonthsagohetoldthem thathewasgladtobegoing home,andnowhereallymeant itwhenhesaidthathewasglad tobebackamongthem.His stayathomehadbeensaddenea bythelossofhisfather.It was,however,awonderfulconsolationforhimtobethere whenthetimecame.Theprayersthatwereofferedbythose presentboretestimonyfar moreeloquentthananyspeeches oftheiraffectionandsincerity.

HethenthankedFatherE. Carolanforthewonderfulwork hedidlookingaftertheparish iirhisabsence.Theywereold friends,andheknewthepeople wouldbeingoodhandswhen helearntthatFatherCarolan wastotakehisplace.

Apresentationwasalsomade toMr.andMrs.Brownandfamilyonthisoccasion.Mr.Brown, afoundationmemberoftheHoly NameSocietyandpresidentof theBelmontBranch,hadalways takenaleadinallparishaffairs, andhisfamilyhadalwaysbeen notonlyagreathelptothe priestsoftheparish,butalso,by theirsterlingCatholicity,awonderfulconsolation.

*VisitingDuo-Pianists daysofshowdom.Inspiritwe werecarriedbacktothetime inPerthwhentheCapitolwas initsheyday,whenBertHowell's bandandorganist,LesWaldron, werefixturesattheAmbassadors, whenJimmyMillerwastheman insideHoyt's,andregularstage presentationswerepartofthe billoffareattheoldPrinceof WalesTheatre.Then,asyou remember,atalkingfilm(in thosedaysanovelty!)formed thefirsthalfoftheprogramme;

afterintervalwewentbacktoa reallysmartstageshowofimportedacts.Theyoungergenerationofto-day,whohavenot seenthesethings,mustsometimeswonderwhatthepastheld, astheygazecuriouslyatthenow neglectedforlornstatuaryinthe spaciousAmbassadors,orasthey wanderforthefirsttime throughtheloftyCapitollounge, notingitsairoffadedmagnificence. Contrasttheselavish productsoftheboomdaysin showbusinesswiththepigmy cinemasthedepressionhasgiven us Nowthe"talkies"gobble upallourtime.

RawiczandLandauerappear edinwhitecoats.Theybowed,andsatdownatthetwo grandpianos.Theywerenot lacingoneanother,buttheybeganplayingsimultaneously.Here wasthefirstindicationofthe perfectunderstandingthatexists betweenthesetwo.Wewereto seeitfunctionIngwithuncanny precisionmanytimesthroughout thenight.Whetherornotwe believeintheirownclaimto musicaltelepathyisbesidethe point.Whatwesawandheard providedsufficientevidencethat theyhaveattainedaveryhigh degreeofcommonaction.Itis ecircumstancewhichlendspolishtotheirperformance.

Theiracknowledgedfieldis thatoflightmusicalentertain. ment,andPerthaudienceshave beenquicktoshowtheirappre- ciationofthistypeoffare.Loud andlongapplausegreetedthe ((inclusionofeverynumber.The accomplishedduo-pianistsevokedanaudienceresponsewhich wasmoregenerallyspontaneousandsincerethanmanyofthereceptionsaccordedartistsof greaternoteinthemusical world.RawiczandLandauer areundoubtedlyattimesrather showy,butnever,1think,offensivelyso;andconstantlyinformingtheirworkisanauthentic undercurrentoffeelingwhich givesthequalityofgenuineness totheirinterpretations.Thus theyseemtohaveachieveda veryhappybalancebetweenpianisticbravuraandkeenmusical perception.Theresulthasa charmofitsownOnlythe hopelesslyhighbrowwouldturn uptheirnoses. SelectionsonFridaywerefrom Tchaikowsky,Mozart,Chopin,Friedman,KreislerandLiszt. Amongtheencoreswasthefamiliar"RitualFireDance,"byFalla Thiswentparticularlywellasa duet.OnthefollowingTuesdaythepianistsdrewupon Dvorak,Liszt,Chopin,Addinsell ('WarsawConcerto"),Strauss, Laidow,andSarasate.

KathleenGoodallsangsoprano solos Figaro"fromMozart's"Marriageof onbothoccasions.She alsosangbracketsoflighternumberswithmuchsuccess.

Oneday,duringhispolygamouslife,JohannaKitanga heardabout"theMaster,whowascalledChrist."ForthwithKitangaleftallhismaterialpossessionsandhis sixwives,andfortenyearsapostolisedintheregion.

WhensomeCatholicmissionarieseventuallycame acrosstheMountainsoftheMoon,theyweresurprisedto find1,000nativesfullypreparedforBaptismandseveral thousandothersunderinstructionsascatechumens.All thisthankstoJohannaKitanga,catechist.

ChiefsconsultedKitangaonimportantdecisions,and theBritishGovernmentrecognisedhisworkbydecors, inghim.Kitangadiedattheageof85in1939. daymanyyoungnativeCatholicsstillvisitKitanga's tombandpray"toourgrandfather."
