ArchbishopMarellawasin chargeoftheVaticanPrisoners ofWarInformationBureauin Japan.Notonlydidhehaveto obtainlistsofprisoners,healso hadtoarrangeforthedespatch ofmessagesfromprisonersto theirrelativesoverseas.

ArchbishopMarellasaidthat theHolyFatherprovidedhim withlargesumsofmoneytobuy

giftsfortheprisoners,Obviously, themostappreciatedgiftwould befood,butfoodwasimpossible tobuy.

Hewasabletopurchaseafew musicalinstruments,butnever sufficienttosupplytheneedsof theprisoners.Hethentriedto purchasebooks,butthecensors insistedonreadingeachcopy, withtheresultthatonlytwoor threeeachweek-sometimesnone atall-gotthroughtotheprisoners.

Finairy,ArchbishopMarella leftmoneyattheprisoncamps inthehopethatthemenmight beabletopurchaseafew"extras"fromcanteens,butwhenhe returnedtothecampsweeks laterhefoundmostofthemoney intact,becausesolittlewas availableforpurchase.

Onthespiritualside,ArchbishopMarellaspentnearlytwo yearsinnegotiationsforpermissiontohaveMassofferedinthe P.O.W.camps.TheJapanese couldnotunderstandthattheliv.

ingshouldbeinterestedinreligion;theythoughtitwasuseful onlyforthedead.

Whenpermissionwasfinally grantedforthecelebrationof MassbyJapanesepriests,Confessionswerespecificallyforbidden.Theprieststhenaskedthe mentoreciteanActofContrition,gaveageneralabsolution anddistributedHolyCommunion.

LONDON,Feb.15.-(Radio,NC).-GreatBritainwillissueaWhitePaperanofficialGovernmentstatement-onthecaseofCardinalMindszentyassoonasinvestigationshavebeencompleted,MinisterofState,HectorMcNeil,toldtheHouse ofCommons.

SpeakingforForeignSecretaryErnestBevin,Mr.McNeilalsosaid:"Sincethe HungarianGovernmenthasrefusedpermissionforanofficialBritishrepresentative toattendtheCardinal'strial,theBritishMinisterinBudapest(AlexanderHelm) hasbeenunabletoreporthisimpressionsfirst-hand.

"Hehas,however,reacheda firmconclusion,withwhich ForeignSecretaryBevinagrees, thattheproceedingshadnoresemblancetoafairtrialinterms understoodinthiscountry,par ticularlysincetheentireresourcesoftheStatewereusedbeforeandduringtheCardinal's detentiontocreateprejudice againsthim"

Mlle.deMiribelwasGeneral deGaulle'ssecretaryduringthe entireperiodofhisleadershipof FreeFrance,whichheadministeredfromLondon.SheremainedwithhimafterhereturnedtoParisin1944andbecameheadoftheProvisional GovernmentoftheFrenchRepublicafteritsliberation.

Sometimeago,F.Hunter,of Manjimup,sentmeacutting fromthe''WesternMail."It hadaphotographofPhillippede Gaulle,onlysonofthewellknownGeneraldeGaulle.With Phillippewashiswifeholding theirfirstbaby.Underneath thispicturewasthefollowing caption:"Thechildwasbornat DijoaandtheMayorofthetown, M.FelixKir,whoisaCommunistCatholicpriest,sentflowers totheclinic."Thepersonwho sentmethiscuttingfromthe "WesternMail"wrote:

"Icannotunderstandhowa CatholicpriestcouldbeaCommunistorforthatmatter haveanythingtodo,withpolitics."

4 thathehadeveryright.His rightto"intrudeontheprovince sacredtothetheologicalexpert" isbasedonhislackoffaithin theologicalexpertsowingtothe factthattheologyisnotanexact science.TheProfessor,apparently,laboursunderthedelusion thatthereareonlytwoprocesses ofvalidthought-exactscience, andknowledgebasedonexperience.Surely,however,ProfessorMurdochwilladmitthat thereissuchathingasdeductive knowledge,elseallphilosophyis worsethanfolly.Now,our basicknowledgeofGodasitrelatestoHisexistenceandessence,derives,notfromtheology, butfromphilosophy.Aman maysayhe"feels"thepresence ofGodintheuniverseorhisown soul,butclearlyhisbeliefisof littlevaliditybesidethatofa manwhosereasonisimpelledto thatknowledgeby,say,theargumentsofcontingency,final causality,orthemoralorderof theuniverse.

Solongasmanisrational (thatis,solongasheisman)he willbeguidedinhishighestmomentsbyhisreasonandnotby funnyinternalfeelings.Once wegetawayfromtheanchor sheetofreason,weareexposed toeverybreathofhumanfolly resultingfromfeelings,imagination,impulse,etc.Nothingis morepainfultowitnessthanthe processofself-deceptionwhich isto-daypontificallydubbed rationalisation,thatjumbleof bogus"reasons"compoundedby acravenconsciencetojustify somefalsecourseofaction.

Tocometohardfacts:itwould

beinterestingtolearnjustwhat "experience"ProfessorMurdoch hashadofGod'ssimplicityorof survivalafterdeath.Forthe wholetruthaboutreligioncannotbecomeatbyphilosophy,or evenfromtheBible,thoughthat isGod'sownrevealingofHimself.Therealissuecentres aboutChrist'sDivinity,andHis foundingofaChurchinwhichhe vestedauthoritativeteaching power.Thetheologicalexpert whoseauthorityisboundedonly byhiseruditionstobuttresshis personalinterpretationofthe Scriptures,isnotentitledtomore thanthecustomaryhumanrespectaccordedtootherkindsof learning.

ButthetheoogiansoftheCatholicChurchcannotbedismissedinanysuchairyandarbitrarymanner.Fortheirteachingsarenotbasedprimarily uponscholarshipandtheyarenot personalviews.Theybutexpoundanddevelopwhathasbeen implicitintheChristiandesposioryofRevealedTruthfromthe timeofChrist.InaWordthey teachwithChrist'sauthority, andtheirteachinghastherefore divinesanctionwhichisbinding uponallmen.

Furthermore,thereisquitea numberofmatterswhicharenot intherealmsof"exactscience" towhichallmenassentandtowardswhichcontraryopinions aretoberegardedmoreinthe lightoftemeritythananything else.itisgood,moreover,torememberthatsciencedoesnotset upthelawsoftheuniverse,but merelydiscoverswhatalready exists.

Theteisatouchofpaganpride abouttheProfessor'sdismissal ofthetheologians.Foragreat manytoywiththefancythatSt. AugustineandThomasAquinas werenotaltogetherfoolsand thattheirintellectualquality wasnotnotablyinferiortothat ofthemodernUniversitydons.

TrialsWhichDon'tConvict

Itisaremarkablereflection onCommuniststupidity,butthe Comradesneverseemtorealise whentheyhavehadenoughofa badthing.Imeanthat,justat themoment,theyarepilingit onabittoothicklywiththeir "trials."Whateversuccessthey mighthaveclaimedoverthe Stepinacproceedingswasbroken dcwnutterlybytheMindszenty affair.Therewasfartoomuch humilityandrepentancefrom quarterswhichdidn'tneedthem inthecircumstances.Butthe wholebusinesshasnowbecomea fiascowiththe"trials"ofthe PresidentoftheSupremeCouncilofthe ChurchesUnitedEvangelical andtheheadofthe PentecostalChurchinBulgaria. Inall15ProtestantpastorsarebeforeaSofiacourtonthecustomarytrumped-upchargesof "activitiesagainsttheState," i.e.,oppositiontothetyrannical puppetMarxistgovernment. DISCOVERY

Fawkeswasnotdeceivedby thecasualmanneroftheLord Chamberlain,andhehurriedto informPercyofthevisit.Percy, withCatesbyandtheWrights, decideditwastimetofly,andarrangementsweremadeforarendezvousintheMidlands.The braveFawkesalonewastoreturn tohiscellarwithinstructionsto blowuptheplaceonthefirstindicationofdanger.Itmustbe rememberedthatinformationrelatingtotheplotisofficialand obviouslyriggedforthepurpose ofprosecution.Anditisnoteworthythatwhilemanyminor articlesfoundinthecellarwere minutelytracedtotheirorigin andtheirpurchaseaccountedfor, nomentionwasmadeoftheenormousamountofgunpowder saidtohavebeenhiddenthere.

GuyFawkes,inthemeantime, hadvisitedthecellarandhadreportedthatnothingwasdisturbed Theconspiratorssawno reasonforalarmandremained inLondon,OnSunday,November3rd.,theybecamesuspiciousandquestionedTresham whoadmittedthattheplothad beendiscoveredandadvised everyonetosavehimself.They decidedtowaittillMonday morningandthentodisband, withtheexceptionofGuyFawkes,whowastoresumehispositionascaretakerofthecellar.

Cecilnowhadthemalmostinthe open,Iftheypanickedandfled itwasmerelyaquestionof roundingthemup.HeldtogetherbyPercy,whoemergesas thestrongmindbehindtheconspirators,theyrefusedtopanic andforthemomentweresafe.

ThetrialofGuyFaWitesand theremainingconspiratorsopenedonJanuary27th1606.They wereaccusedofhightreasonand SirEdwardCoke,theAttorneyGeneral,openedthecaseforthe crown.Hisspeech,whichwas longandlaboriouslywindy, gaveahistoryoftheplotandhe said:"Ithadthreeroots,all plantedandwateredbyJesuits, andEnglishRomanCatholics." Theverdictwasaforegoneconclusionandalltheconspirators werefound"Guilty."Onbeing askediftheyhadanythingto say,onlyRockwoodmadeany speechindefenceofhisactions.

Theothers,includingFawkes,acceptedtheinevitableinsilence.

Whenthemainissueswere nowsafelyundercontrol,and theleadersoftheconspiracy eitherdeadorinprison,Cecil begantogatheruptheloose ends.Heresortedtothirddegreemethods.Theinterrogators toldFawkesthatCatesbywas arrestedandhadconfessedeverything.Fawkesnowadmitted thatCatesbywastheprincipal actor,butittooktherackbeforehewouldadmitanymore.
