Albury'sflyingpriest,Rev. FatherJohnGlover,wasfatally injuredrecentlyinanaircrash inNewGuinea,wherehewas attachedtoamissionarystation.

Beyondthebareannouncement ofhisdeath,nothingisknownof theaccidentwhichoccurredon anairstripintheAlexishafen region.FatherGloverhadreturnedhurriedlytotheisland afterhisrecenttriptoAlbury, sothattheplanewouldbeavailabletocarryontheaerialwork associatedwiththemissions, anotherplanewhichhadbeenin usehavingcrashed.

FatherGlover,whowas39 yearsofage,wastheeldestson ofthefamily,wlhichisverywell knowninAlburyanddistrict. BorninPerthandeducatedat theChristianBrothers'College, Albury,hestudiedforthepriesthoodatSpring-woodandManly, andwasordainedinSt.Patrick's Church,Albury,17yearsago.He wasthenthefirstAlburyboyto beordainedinStPatrick's.

ItwtsatCootamundrain 1939thathelearnedtofly,and soonafterwardshewentonmissionaryworktoNewGuinea, wherehelabouredintheMorobe district.

Later,FatherGloverbecame achaplainwiththefamousSixth Division,withwhichhewent throughthedrawn-outAitape campaign.Afterhisdischarge fromtheArmyaftertheendof thewar,hereturnedtohismissionaryworkinN.G.

Amongthesurvivingmembers ofhisfamilyisanotherpriest, Rev.FatherKevinGlover,his brother,whoisatpresentin Rome.

Itistherecognitionofthistruenatureofthe"trial" andofitsrealpurpose-todestroytheChurchinHungarybyblackeningthereputationofitsspiritualleader- thatintheviewofallunbiassedobserversfurnishesthe keytotheproperevaluationofthedramatic,oftenbewilderingdevelopmentsintheBudapestcourtroom. Personsthoroughlyfamiliarwiththetruesentiments oftheHungarianptoplehavedeclaredthemselvescon- vincedthattheoverwhelmingmajorityoftheHungar- iansarenotfooled,either,bythe"revelations"drummed intotheirearsbyCommunistpropaganda.

- Thereaie,admittedly,certainaspectsoftheBudapestp:oceedimjswhich,pendingfurtherclarificatlon, simplydefyareasonableexplanation.Itcanonlybe conjecturedastowhatextentcruelorrefinedmethodsof physicaldrmentaltorturehavebeenemployedto"con-dition"theCardinalandhissixco-defendantsfortheir trial.

Numerouspersonswhoarethoroughlyacquainted withtheCardinal,whoknowhisstrengthofwillandhis forceful,austerepersonality,declarethemselvesstillunabletoreconcilesomeofhisalleged"confessions"and "admissionsofguilt"duringthetrialwithhisunyielding, fearlessatitudethathascharacterisedhisactionsand utterancesduring'flatlyyears,unless,theydeclare,hehas beenovercomebythat"weaknessoftheflesh"ofwhich theCardinalspokeinalettertotheHungarianBishops shortlybeforehisarrest.

ItiswiththeCardinal'sallegedrepudiationofthis letterduringthetrialwhichappearstomanyobserversastheclearestindicationthattheCardinalwhofacedhis "judges"wasnotthesamepersonastheCardinalwho ruledfromEsztergomasHungary'sspiritualshepherd.

AccordingtoViennareports,theCardinalwrote, shortlybeforehisarrest,amessageaddressedtotheBis- hopsonthehackofausedenvelope.Hetoldthem(1) thathehadneverparticipatedinanyconspiracy,(2) thathewouldneverresignhishighoffice,(3)thathe wouldneverconfess,andthatany"confessions,"evenif theyborehissignature,wouldresultfrom"weakness oftheflesh."
