MUNICH,Jan17.-Toprevent theirinterrogationbyAmerican authoritiesaboutconditionsbehindthe"IronCurtain,"theRumanianCommunistregimeextiiratedapromisefrom191German nuns-membersoftheEnglische Fraeulein,acongregationfoundedinBavariaintheseventeenth centuryanddedicatedtoteaching ingirls'schoolsandcollegesnottoproceedtotheAmerican zonesofoccupationinAustria andGermanyandtogotoItaly instead.

Arrangementshadbeenmade fortheseSisterstocometoGermanyaftertheircongregation hadbeenbannedinRumanialast summer.HisEminenceMichael CardinalFaulhaber,Archbishop ofMunich,isanxiousforthemto cometoBavaria,wheretheir teachingskillcanbeputtogood use.Americanofficialsherehad givenpermissionfortherepatriationoftheSisters.

ThelateFatherBrennanwas burninCastlecomer,Co.Kilkenny,Ireland,onMay4th.,1888. Afterthecompletionofhissecondarystudiesheenteredthe MissionarySocietyoftheMill HillFathersinLiverpool.He pursuedhisphilosophicalstudies inHollandandreturnedtoLondon,wherehestudiedtheology. HewasordainedtotheSacred PriesthoodatMillHill,London, in1913.Shortlyafterordinationhewasappointedthesame yeartomissionaryworkinUgan- da.Africa,wherehezealouslylaboureduntil1922,whenhecontractedthe"BlackWater"fever, In1922hereturnedtoIrelandon sickleave.Afteraperiodofconvalescencehereturnedtothe MissionfieldofUgandaandwasagainstrickenwithfever,which necessitatedhisreturnhomein 1932.WhilstinIrelandhewas attachedtotheMillHillMissionarySocietyhouseatFreshford,wherehedevotedhistime topropagandaworkonbehalfof ti theSociety'sMissions.

Thelatterhalfofherreligious lifewasmostlyspentinGeraldton,where,inadditiontoteachinginStellaMarisCollege,she hadfromtimetotimetocarry theheavyresponsibilityeitherof MotherSuperior,MotherAssistantorBursar. Althoughindeclininghealth forthepastfewyears,thelate MotherMonicacontinuedto teachandcarryoutthemany otherdutiesofherofficeasAs-

SolemnRequiemMassforthe soulofFatherConwaywillbe celebratedinSt.Patrick'sChurch, Fremantle,onMondaynext,14th. inst.,at9.30a.m.HisGracethe Archbishopwill.preside. Whilesomeobserverssaidthat asuddenchangeinMoscowpolicyforcedItalianCommuniststo callofftheslow-downafterit hadspreadto63largefactories, itwasnotedthattheLCGIL,a federationofChristianworkers, rebelledagainstRedorders. InPalestinetwo-thirdsofthe city'stransitworkersdefiedCommunistordersandkepttransportationrolling.Onmanysides, non-Communistlabourleaders calledontheirfollowerstostand bytheirjobs.

JustwhatisLCGIL?It's thehandiworkofItalianCatholicAction,whichisnowengaged inamammothdrivetoenlist 10,000,000Italianworkersinthis Christianlabourfederationin oppositiontotheCommunistdominatedfederation-CGIL.

Calledtotheforefrontinthis campaignisthevastorganisation ofCivicCommittees,whichwere setupespeciallyforlastAprils: electionandhelpedbringabout thedecisiveChristianvictory overtheCommunistsatthepolls.

TheCivicCommitteescomprise amuchlargermembershipthan CatholicActionitself.Theyembracepracticallyallanti-CommunistsinItaly,andits20,000 localgroupsco-operatewith clergyandlaymenalike.The leadership,however,isinthe handsofCatholicActionmen.
