ThelateFatherBrennanwas burninCastlecomer,Co.Kilkenny,Ireland,onMay4th.,1888. Afterthecompletionofhissecondarystudiesheenteredthe MissionarySocietyoftheMill HillFathersinLiverpool.He pursuedhisphilosophicalstudies inHollandandreturnedtoLondon,wherehestudiedtheology. HewasordainedtotheSacred PriesthoodatMillHill,London, in1913.Shortlyafterordinationhewasappointedthesame yeartomissionaryworkinUgan- da.Africa,wherehezealouslylaboureduntil1922,whenhecontractedthe"BlackWater"fever, In1922hereturnedtoIrelandon sickleave.Afteraperiodofconvalescencehereturnedtothe MissionfieldofUgandaandwasagainstrickenwithfever,which necessitatedhisreturnhomein 1932.WhilstinIrelandhewas attachedtotheMillHillMissionarySocietyhouseatFreshford,wherehedevotedhistime topropagandaworkonbehalfof ti theSociety'sMissions.

Thelatterhalfofherreligious lifewasmostlyspentinGeraldton,where,inadditiontoteachinginStellaMarisCollege,she hadfromtimetotimetocarry theheavyresponsibilityeitherof MotherSuperior,MotherAssistantorBursar. Althoughindeclininghealth forthepastfewyears,thelate MotherMonicacontinuedto teachandcarryoutthemany otherdutiesofherofficeasAs-

Theteachingvocationtook SisterMaryPetersuccessivelyto Wagin,Katanning,andMaylands.Herspecialaptitude wasinteachingmusicandsinging,withspecialattentionto PlainChant.

Inthisrespect,itisimportanttonotetwomatters. ThemajorcriminalcountbroughtagainsttheCardinal wasthatoftreason,andinparticularofplottingwithOtto ofHapst.urgtorevivethemonarchy.Nowthatliewas nailedbeforethetrialbegan,foronthedaywhenitwas allegedtohavetakenplaceinChicago,theCardinalwas seenbythousandsinOttawa.Hereisanobjectivefact whichallthemonkey-businessintheCommunistbagof trickscannotcircumvent.YettheCardinalconsentedto thischargeastotheotherswhenitsrefutationwasthe simplestofallmatters.Thereentersherethatabnormal elementwhichdominatesalltheprecedings.Moreover, wemustsupposethathehadsomeforeknowledgeofsome sucheventualitywhenhewarnedtheworldbeforehisarrestthatnovaliditywouldattachtoany"confession"he mightmakeaftertheevent.HisRedjudgeswerevery carefultohavehimretractthiswarning,butitwillnot beretractedbyworldopinion,becauseweknowforcertainthathewasnormalwhenitwaswritten.Inaddition,theexclusionofobserversfromembassiesandForeignMinistries,andtheadmissionofforeignjournalists fromthetrialmayyetproveofmajorsignificance.For, thejournalistswouldnotenjoydiplomaticimmunityfrom theconsequencesoftheirdespatches,astheyweretobecomepublicproperty,whereasthecontentsofthediplomaticbagarenormallyconfidential.Itwascertainlyextraordinarythatajointstatementoffreedomfromcensorshipv.rasrequiredofthem,andthattwoimportant Pressrepresentativesdidnotsignthedocument.
ThemostmonstrousfeatureofthetrialwastheprejuclinentonthepartoftheHungarianGovernment,press andradio.Evenhadtheproceedingsbeennormalin otherrespects,nofairjudicialtrialwaspossiblewhena carefullyorganisedcampaignofabuse,intimidationand slanderhadbeenworkingatfullpressuriforsixmonths before,andduringthetrial.TheCourtitselfwentout ofitswaytoslanttheevidenceprimarilyagainstAmericanforeicznpolicyandsecondarilyagainsttheChurch. DespiteDr.Olty'sclaimthattherewasnomentionofreliginus thefactremainsthatthecharge againsttheCardinalthathehadobstructedrelationsbetweenChurchandStatecentredaboutthecommunisation oftheschools,andifthatisnotamajorplankofreligious persecution,noneexists.Forallthespateofpropaganda,ityetremainsthatitwasnotCardinalMindszenty ortheCatholicChurchinHungarywhichwastriedand condemned,buttheMarxistregime,whichhasbrought downanoldandChristiancivilisationtothemostdegradedlevel.Theinhumansentencehasbeenpassed uponagreatchurchmanandleaderofhiscountry,butnot untilhisfree-willhadbeensappedandbroken.Itisa ,;ymbolnitheCommunistmenacetofreemeneverywhere. ROME,Jan.20.-Thelatest abortiveattemptofCommunists todisrupttheItalianindustrial systembyaprolongedslowdownhasbroughttotheforea vitalnewpowerinthatcountry'slabourfield-theFreeGeneralConfederationofLabour (LCGIL).
Whilesomeobserverssaidthat asuddenchangeinMoscowpolicyforcedItalianCommuniststo callofftheslow-downafterit hadspreadto63largefactories, itwasnotedthattheLCGIL,a federationofChristianworkers, rebelledagainstRedorders. InPalestinetwo-thirdsofthe city'stransitworkersdefiedCommunistordersandkepttransportationrolling.Onmanysides, non-Communistlabourleaders calledontheirfollowerstostand bytheirjobs.
JustwhatisLCGIL?It's thehandiworkofItalianCatholicAction,whichisnowengaged inamammothdrivetoenlist 10,000,000Italianworkersinthis Christianlabourfederationin oppositiontotheCommunistdominatedfederation-CGIL.
Calledtotheforefrontinthis campaignisthevastorganisation ofCivicCommittees,whichwere setupespeciallyforlastAprils: electionandhelpedbringabout thedecisiveChristianvictory overtheCommunistsatthepolls.
TheCivicCommitteescomprise amuchlargermembershipthan CatholicActionitself.Theyembracepracticallyallanti-CommunistsinItaly,andits20,000 localgroupsco-operatewith clergyandlaymenalike.The leadership,however,isinthe handsofCatholicActionmen.
TheguidinghandandpresidentoftheorganisationofCivic CommitteesisProf.LuigiGedda, whoisalsoheadofItalianMen ofCatholicActionandaleader inallspheresofCatholiclife.
Shouldthegoalof10,000,000 membersbereached,itwould constitutealabourgroupmore thanequaltoAmericanstandardsandanoverwhelmingoppositiontotheCommunistCGIL's 3,000,000members.

"Wearemerelyplacingour greatnetworkofCivicCommitteesatthefederation'sdisposal, andwillhelpitconductmembershipandeducationalcampaigns," hedeclared."Oncethisiscompleted,wewillturneverything overtolabourleaders."
Onevitalproblemisthecontractingof2,000,000unemployedworkers,whorepresent15,000,000destitutepeople,said ProfessorGedda.IftheCivic Committeescoulddistributecoal andknittingwooltothesepeople duringthecampaign,itwould henotonlyaChristiancharity butaneffectiveweaponagainst Communistpenetrationamong theunemployed,sincetheCommunistsalwaysthriveonhuman misery,headded.Sincethe MarshallPlandoesnotcover thisfield,Italianslookhopefully fortheaidofAmericanCatholics,itwassaid.
