Thesearefightingwordswhichthrowachallengein theteethofthecomplacentwhobelievethatitisenough tokeepCommunism"incheck."FortheplainsignificanceofeventsemphasisesthatMarxismwillnever berestrained,letaloneoverthrown,bytheChurchDormant.ItisthehighprivilegeanddutyofCatholicsto maketheChurchMilitantalivingreality.Wearenot thesecondarybuttheprimaryandthetrueinternationalisminanagewhichisthinkingincreasinglyintermsof oneworld.Butwehavebeensolongaccustomedtoa defensivepositionthatmanyhavecometolookonlife inmerelynegativeterms.Now,however,whetherwe likeitornot,therevolutionisuponusandwilly-nillywe shallbecompelledtoreinvigorateourthinkingandto initiateaction(baseduponsoundCatholicsociology) whichwilloffermenarationalalternativetoRedtotalitarianism.ItisherethatthelongplanningofCatholic ActionmustproduceitsfruitsNolongercanitremain merelyamissionwithintheFold.Itmusttaketoitself theoriginalmissionaryvocationgivenbyChristtoHis Church-togooutandpreachtheGospeltoeveryliving creature.Thatistheprobleminakernel,tobringto theworldtheGospelinaction.
Itnota*ifthewholecampaignhadtobetediously consideredandplanned.Thatdifficultpartoftheprogrammehasbeensplendidlyandlonglaiddownbya seriesofincomparablepopes.Thecharteriswritten; whowillfulfilitsterms?Iftheworldgoesdowninto theinhumanslaveryofCommunistsupremacythefault willbeentirelywithCatholics.Fornootherorganisation assumesthebreath-taking)pretensionsof,theCatholic Faith.Wehavethesolventsoftheworld'sillsifweare onlywillingandabletoappl-,themintime.Wehave concreteproposalsaffectingtherestorationofproperty, therationalisingofthelabourcontract,thefairerdistributionofwealth,thepreservationandprogressoffamilylife, andahundredothersuchimportantquestions.Butabove all,itisourtasktorestorethespiritofcharityandjustice. Forthecosmicenemy-Communism-isnotprimarilya politicaloreconomicsystem,butareligionofanti-Christ aimingtodestroytheChurchofGodandallnaturalreligion.Ifwecouldeffect,underGod,thespiritualconversionofmankind,allelsewouldbeaddedtoourefforts. TheCarnivallasteduntilDecember31,1948,andwhilethe inen'splaywasdisappointing,the ladiesplayedwell,andwontwo matches,andrantheother Statesclosely.However,itmust berealisedthatW.A.isatquite adisadvantage,owingtothe distanceinvolved,WhereasVictoria,N.S.W.andSA.,withonly oneday'stravelhavepractically thepickoftheirplayers.But itisconsideredthatrepresentationisofparamountimportance, andgreatlycontributestothe successoftheCarnivals.
Thesocialprogrammewasvery large,andcombinedwithdaily tennisconstitutedveryheavy work.Allmanagedtostand thestrain,butacoupleofearly nightsaftertheCarnivalwere veryacceptable.Thesocial highlightsweretheNightonthe Ice,DinnerandDanceatthe MelbourneTownHall,Picnicto Somers,andtheNewYear'sEve BallatSt.Kilda.Thesewere outstanding,butperhapsthe mostintriguingtotheWestAustralianswastheice-skating,and manylatervisitsweremadeto theGlaciariumandSt.Moritz TheNewYear'sEveBallattractedapproximately1,800,andlasteduntil3a.m,TryingtoobtaintaxisatthathourinMelbournecanreadilybeappreciated.Wewerefinallyaccommodatedbyabout4.15a.m.
