TheHungarianGovernmenthasbegunthecirculationamongworkersandpeasantsofpetitionsdemanding theutmostinpunishmentforCardinalMindszenty.The petitionsarebeingcirculatedfortheworkersandpea*santstosign,anditismadeabundantlyclearthattheir failuretodosowillinvolvethegravestconsequencesfor them.

Wordalsohasbeenreceived thattheHungarianCommunists intendtosetppforthetrialof CardinalMin6lszentyatribunal constitutedexclusivelyofcareerjudgeswhoaresubservient tc,theregime.Itisindicated thattheCommunistsplantouse, asfaraspossible,Catholicjudgeswhomtheyhavefirstso compromisedthattheywillbe deprivedofindependentaction. SincewhatFatherMurtaghcalls "thegreatapostasy"inhisbook 'Australia:TheCatholicChapter,"theCatholicschoolhashad tosupportitselfwithoutanyfinancialaidfromtheState.But whatrichdividendsthecourae andvisionofArchbishopVaughan'spolicyofaschoolinevery parish,tobebuiltbythepeople, andstaffedbythereligiousorders ofmenandwomen,haspaid!In 1879SirHenryParkesintroduced aPublicInstructionBillwhich withdrewS'tateaidtodenominationalschoolswithinthreeyears. BrandishinghisBillintheLegislature,hedeclared:"Iholdinmy handwhatwillbedeathtothe callingofthepriesthoodof Rome."Whatafalseprophethe hasprovedtobe!Andherealisedhowshallowwerehiswords ofboastingbeforehedied,for hetoldCardinalMoranthatthe

theparishforseventeenyearsa largeroomwhichattimesthey urgentlyneededforthemselves andfortheirboarders.Theparishcanneverdoenoughforthe SistersofS't.Josephforthisgraciousactofhospitality,andindeedformanyotherservicesto theparish.

Ontheeveoftransferringfrom theoldtothenewschool,anothernamedeservesmentionhere forhiseagleeyeoneverystage oftheconstructionofthecrew school.Thatwachfulnesshas beeninvaluable,andhiswideexperienceofbuildinghasserved ourcausewell.WerefertoMr. PatrickDuffy,ofCoodeSt.,and putonrecordthethanksofthe parishforhisservicestothenew school,andhiswonderfulexampleintheparish.

Afteragoodnight'srest,we hadadelightfulbreakfast,and spentmostof-thedayinthe loungecalr-music,cards,and chatterfillingthedayalltoo

TheCarnivallasteduntilDecember31,1948,andwhilethe inen'splaywasdisappointing,the ladiesplayedwell,andwontwo matches,andrantheother Statesclosely.However,itmust berealisedthatW.A.isatquite adisadvantage,owingtothe distanceinvolved,WhereasVictoria,N.S.W.andSA.,withonly oneday'stravelhavepractically thepickoftheirplayers.But itisconsideredthatrepresentationisofparamountimportance, andgreatlycontributestothe successoftheCarnivals.

Thesocialprogrammewasvery large,andcombinedwithdaily tennisconstitutedveryheavy work.Allmanagedtostand thestrain,butacoupleofearly nightsaftertheCarnivalwere veryacceptable.Thesocial highlightsweretheNightonthe Ice,DinnerandDanceatthe MelbourneTownHall,Picnicto Somers,andtheNewYear'sEve BallatSt.Kilda.Thesewere outstanding,butperhapsthe mostintriguingtotheWestAustralianswastheice-skating,and manylatervisitsweremadeto theGlaciariumandSt.Moritz TheNewYear'sEveBallattractedapproximately1,800,andlasteduntil3a.m,TryingtoobtaintaxisatthathourinMelbournecanreadilybeappreciated.Wewerefinallyaccommodatedbyabout4.15a.m.

AftertheCarnivalPatMcGrade,HazelDillon,KathMcCaul,BernieEaston,RitaMillard,andMaureenDonohoetook theopportunitytovisitSydney andtheremainderofusorganisedtripsamongstourselves,and visitedPhilipIsland,Cowes,San Remit,AcheronWay,Mt.Donna Buang,Lorne,Anglesea,etc.Bob McIntyre,whomsomemembers mayrecallbeinginPerthattach-

edtotheNavyduringthelatter partof1945,wasagoodfriend, andhisassistanceandhospitality wereverywelcome.Someof uswerehisguestsonaruntothe GreatDivide,andtoacountry, clubatFrangston,namedRene- lagh.

Naturally.tvmadeseveral callsto reactionsLunaPark,andtheusual fromthegirlswereup tostandard.HazelDillon,MaryMcGinnityandMadgeMut- phycametomind.Togetthem intotheBigDipperforcewas almostcalledupon.

Thenightclubs,Continental restaurants,andcafeswerealsoveryinteresting,andsomedinner parties,etc.,werearrangedat them.
