ThedeathoccurredonJanuary6th.,athisresidence,ofa wellknownandhighlyrespected memberofthecommunity,inthe personofMr.WilliamJames Easton,of112GuildfordRoad, Maylands.
Thedeceasedwasbornin NorthMelbourne77yearsago HewasmarriedinMelbourne, andcametothisStateasa youngman.Mr.andMrs. Eastonhadrecentlycelebrated the55th.anniversaryoftheir marriage.Afterseveralyears inFremantle,Mr.Eastontook upabusinessinKalgoorlie,and latermovedtotheWilunadistrict,whereheconductedacontractingbusinessforaperiodof 16years.OldWilunaresidents willrecallthatherenderedthe districtgreatassistanceinpioneeringatransportservicefrom thetowntothemine,
Mr.EastoncametoPerthwith hisfamilyin1922,andfora numberofyearscarriedona butcheringbusinessinHaySt. East.Hewasheldinhighesteembyassociatedmasterbutchersandmembersofthetrade.
Hehadbeenretiredfromactive businessforsome8or9years priortohisdeath.Adevout andpracticalCatholic,Mr.Eastonlivedforhisfaithandhis family.Ofaquietdisposition, hismaininterestswereconfined tohishomelife,andhispassing hasprovokedwidespreadsympathyfarhisfamilyintheirgreat loss.
Hisremainswereconveyedto theQueenofMartyrs'Church, Maylands,whereRequiemMass wascelebratedbyRev.Father Delahuntyonthemorningof 7th.January.Thecortege laterproceededtotheCatholic
portionoftheKarrakattaCemetery,whereRevFatherDelahonty,assistedbyRev.Father McKeon,recitedthelastprayers atthegraveside.TherepresentativegatheringatMassand atthecemetery,thefloraltributes,andnumerousmessages ofcondolencereceivedwasinitselfastrikingtributetothe popularityofthedeceasedand evidenceoftherespectandsympathyforhiswidowsandfamily intheirbereavement.

Thedeathoccurred,onthe 13th.inst.,ofMrs.BrigidMary Kelly,of24CameliaStreet, NorthPerth.
FormanyyearsthelateMrs. Kellywasa'familiarfigureto thosewhoattendedthechurch attachedtotheRedemptorist Monastery,NorthPerth.Every morningsheattendedMassand receivedHolyCommunion.Not adaypassedthatshedidnot maketheStationsoftheCross.
Deathfoundherwellprepared,andalthoughthefatalcollapsewassudden,shewas anointedbyoneoftheRedemptoristFathersanddiedcomfortedbytheritesofherreligion.
Herson,Rev.FatherP.T. Kelly,C.SS.R.,whowasinSydneyatthetime,rushedtoIVrth andhadtheconsolationofrecitingthelastprayersatthe graveside.

Therecentnewsofthe'arireet ofCardinalMindszenty,'PrincePrimateofHungary,oncharges oftreasonandcurrencyspectr lating,wasnotunexpected,and theeyesofthewholeworldare uponthisgallantandundaunted figureashedisappearsintoimprisonment,whilsttheprayersof Catholicsofeverynationsupport himinhisloneliness.
Thecliqueofgangsterswho nowruleHungarycouldscarcelyknow'whattreasonis,because theydonotknowthemeaningof truepattiotism.SincetheRed regimewasinstalledinHungary CardinalMindszentyhasstood likearockinthefloodofCommunistintrigueandvituperation thatispaganisinganddegradinghiscountry.
Hisarrestfollowscloselythe arrestlastOctober.ofDr.Louis Orclass,headoftheHungarian LutheranChurch,whowassentencedbya"workers'court"to twoyears'imprisonmentforreceivingremittancesfromAmericanLutheranswithoutclearing thefundsthroughtheNational BankofHungary,thoughin NewYork,officialsoftheNationalLutheranChurchinsist thatallmoneysenttoHungary wassentdirectlythroughthe NationalBank.
Thechargesagainstboth leadersaredeaflyonlyexcuses forremovingecclesiasticalfigures becausetheyresistedtheencroachmentoftheStatein Churchaffairs.Bothmenrefusedtosubmitonthequestion ofthenationalisationofthe schoolsinHungary.
Fromthereportsavailable fromHungaryduringthepast12 months,thereis-goodreasonfor thinkingthatthearrestofCardinalMindszentysignifiesthe finalassaultontheCatholic Churchinwhichwasonce"The RealmoftheCrownofSt.Ste-

phear.!'TheCommunitsaim saakeitdecisiveandconclusive. Uptothetimeofhisarrestthe Cardinalwasthesymbolofresistanceimacountryofwhich Catholicsareabout70percent. ofthepopulation. Thenationalisation'ofChurch Schools,whichcameintoeffectas fromSeptember3rd.,1948,was precededbyaspecialreignof terrordirectedagainst,andinvolvingthearrestofstudentsor membersofCatholicorganisetMns. ThelawitselfwasannoancedoverthenationalRadio, andwasaccompaniedbyavictimsbar:ageofanti-Churchprotiaganda.ThePrince-Primate replied,bysayingthatheWet-1 excommunicateeveryonewho votelfororsupportedthelavo ofnationalisationofsehoels.
Intheparish'ofBakanyent, theRey.DenisSzittyayOpenly sidedwiththeCommunists,and wasimmediatelysuspendedby hisBishopTheGovernment supportedthepriest,andhewas givenanofficialpost.Inapastoral,theCardinalagainmadeit veryclearthatanyonealiosupportedtheGovernmentinthis disputewouldincurrigotouseeClesiasticsiSanctions,andsuspendedfromhispriestlyoffice theRev.AnzelmWenimer-a well-knownpreacher-becauseof hisleaningstowardstheCommunists.
Thatthematterwasrapidly developingtoacrisisisclear fromthefollowingremarkstakenfromaspeechmadebyM. Mihalfyi,chiefofthePresident's Cabinet:

CopyingtheoldtechniqueemployedinRussiaduringthe SpanishCivilMar,andsoasto, arousepopularfervour,therefollowedafloodofresolutionlifrola theTradeUnionsandotherComniunist-dorninate,1bodiesdemanciingthattheauthorityof theGovernmentbeupheld,and actionbetakenagainstthe Church.Numeroies.airestsfol'ewer'.IntheprisonofSopron. bohidaalonethereare600victims,mostlyCatholicpriests, whilsttheknownlaysupporters ofCardinalMindszentyatenow reducedtoveryfew.TheSecretary-GeneralofCatholicAction,MonsignorZigismondMihalovies,hasbdencondemnedto 10years'imprisonment.buthas succeededinescaping,whilstofficialCatholicActionhaspracfivellyceased.TheGove:nment alsoannounced.?protection"for suspendedpriests,andguaranteed themwell-paidGeveramentappointments.
Asapublicprotestagainstthe nationa'isationoftheschools. CardinalMindszentyheldameetingatToervekzentmiklos,andin anattempttofrustrateitspurpose,theMinisterforTransport :ecreedthatnotrainswereto ',topthere.This,however,did notpreventtensofthousands travellingonfoot.Atthesame timetheGovernmentorganised ameetingatKaposvaratwhich someoftheCabinetMinisters weretospeak,andithadtohe abandonedbecausetherewasno audience.
Aseriousdevelopmentoccurred atthevillageofPocspeteri,evh61 the-ammuniststriedtoseizea Churchschool.Intheensuing clashwiththeinhabitantsaCommunistpolicemanwaskilledThe parishpriestand28peasantsand workerswereimmediatelyatrested.Inthesubsequentsummarytrialtheactualkillerof thepolicemanwascondemnedto death,andthepriestgivena deathsentence,afterwardscomtimtedtoimprisonmentforlife. Thedeadpolicemanwasburied withelaborateceremony,and wasposthumouslyawardedthe highestpolicedecoration.'
Thisincidentprovokedafierce PressandRadiocampaignagainsttheCardinal,towhomthe MinisterofEducation,M.Ortutay-aformerCatholic-attributedtheblameandthreatenedhimwith"allofforceofthe law."TheCardinalreplied withanotherPastoralLetter,in whichhecounselledallCatholics (1),nottoreadtheGovernment Press,and(2),nottolistentothe HungarianRadio,for,hewrote, "tothebitterdisgraceofthis country,falsehood,deceitand terrorwerenevergreaterinthe courseofitshistory."
TheDeputy-Premier.M.Rakosi,thenmadeaspeechinwhich heattackedtheleadersofthe CatholicChurch,and,warning thattheGovernment'spatience hadcometoanend,said:"Anyonewhoopposesthedemocratic lawsofthecountrywillbe smashedbythefistofdemocracy."
Aswehavereadinthenews recently,CardinalMindszentyhas beenarrestedbythe"fistofdemocracy,"butsofarfrombeing "smashed,"heisnoloanational hero.Itonlyremainedforthe Government,copyinganoldNazi trick,totrumpupchargesof carreacyviolation-andtreason.
