InBudapest,theCardinalsoon learnedofwhathadbeendecided duringtheCominform'sbusy day.Hebegantoprepareforhis arrest.

OnthenightafterChristmas, asthepoliceconvoyapproachedtheCardinal'sresidence,he scribbledahastypostscripton theenvelopethatheldhismessage.Hewarnedhisfellowpriests tobescepticaliftheyheardthat hehadresigned,orhad"confessed."Eveniftheywere shownhisauthenticsignatureon aconfession,theyshouldconsiderhissigningastheresultof "humanfrailty,"i.e.,theresult ofhisinabilitytowithstand Communisttorture.

Thenhewithdrewtohischamberstopray.There,thepolice arrestedhim.Theyhadbeen carefultocomeatnight,toavoid therepetitionofamemorable scene,justfouryearsago,when Mindszentywasbeingarrested byHungarianfascists.Atthat timeherefusedtobedrivenoff inapolicecar.Hedonnedhis robes,and,followedby20priests, walkedtoprisoninbroaddaylight,blessingthepeoplewho linedthestreetskneelingin prayer.

Thistime,themoreefficient Communistpolicegavehim barelytimetokisshisweeping 85-year-oldmothergoodbye. Quietly,hesaid:"Verywell," andquietlyenteredthewaiting policegar,rosaryinhand.StickingcloselytotheSofiadecisions, thegovernmentannouncedthat Mindszentywasbeingheldincommunicadoonsuspicionof

ThearrestofHisEminenceJosefCardinalMindszenty shouldnothavecomeasasurprisetoourreaders.Forthe lasttwomonthswehavedevotedalotofspacetothe eventsthatleduptohisarrest.

AsthecourseofSoviet"Justice"willprobablyrunits foulandinhumancoursewedecidedtomakethisissuea special"CardinalMindszentyNumber"toputbeforethe peopleofW.A.factsandcommentswhichwilleitherbe hushedupordistortedbythemajorinternationalnewsagenciesonwhomoursecularpapersdependfortheir information.

Initsissueofthe10thinst.,theAmericanNews magazine,"Time,"revealedthefactthatthePrimate's arrestwasdecidedonduringaspecialsecretsessionofthe CominformheldinSofiaearlyinDecember."Time"'s versionoftheproceedingsisgivenhere. treason,attemptingtooverthrow thedemocraticregime,espionage andforeigncurrencyabuses."TheCommunistsgaveoutalong listofincriminatingdocuments saidtohavebeenfoundin"a metalboxburiedinacellarin theCardinal'spalace."

Communistnewspaperstookup thehueandcry,screamedthat Mindszenty'sreputationasan anti-Naziwasunmerited.thathe hadbeen"anotoriousantiSemite."Climaxofthisfarrago wasthechargethattheNazis hadarrestedMindszentyonlybe- causeherefusedtogiveuphis hoarded"1,500pairsofunderwear."

ThischargewasatypicalCommunistdistortion.Truthwasthat onedayin1944,Hungary'sNazi dictator,FerencSzalasi,haddecidedtosetupheadquartersin thebishop'spalace.Mindszenty, whowasshelteringabout100 Jewsinhiscellaratthetime, declaredthatsolongashewas bishop,noneofSzaiasi'smen wouldenter.TheNazispromptly occupiedthepalace.Thepolice foundasizablestoreofclothes whichMindszentyhadquietly collectedforHungary'sperse- cutedandpillagedJewry.The clothesincludedunderwearwhich Szalasthadwantedforhisown troops.

Mindszenty,thesonofapoor peasant,hadrisentothehighest Churchofficeinhisland.Some ofHungary'speasants,whoused toflocktogetherincrowdsof. 45.000tohearhimspeak,haveseenhim,eveninrecentyears,workingthelandathismother's five-acrefarminthevillageof Mindzent.Hungarians,whowere nowaskedtobelievethatMindszentywasananti-Semite,rememberedhiscourageouswar-timesermonsattackingNaziism, inwhichhedeclaredthat"anti-

Semitismandtheproceedings againsttheJewsaretheshame ofcivilization."

"FORRIGHTEOUSNESS' SAKE"

ThereasonforMindszenty's arrest istswasplain.TheCommunwantedtodemonstratethat nopowerremainedinHungary thatcouldstandagainstthem.Thedemonstrationmightnot proveentirelysuccessful.Two daysafterMindszenty'sarrest wasmadepublic,theMinisterof theInteriorsummonedfourof Hungary'sRomanCatholicbishopswho,jointlywiththeirPrimate,hadstaunchlyheldout againstagovernmentplande signedtomaketheCatholic clergyvirtuallyemployeesofthe State.Theministertoldthefour hold-outs,onpainofimprisonment,toresign.Theyflatlyrefused.Nevertheless,theCommunistpresstrumpetedthenews thatHungary'sBenchofBishops hadagreedtotheirterms.

LastweektheHungarianCommunistshadtheremarkablegall toinvitetheVaticantonegotiate anagreementonthestatusofthe Hungarianchurch,"regardless ofthepersonalcaseofMindszenty."TheVaticanrejectedthe overturesasa"puerilemaneuver."

AsforMindszenty,theHungariangovernmentformallyannouncedthat"undertheweight ofevidenceagainsthim[he] madeaconfession."But,sofar, theCommunistshavenotpub-lishedanyconfession,withor withouthissignature.Cardinal Mindszenty,despitethehuman frailtyheknew,wasastrong man.Justbeforehisarrest,he hadwritten:"Thisisnowthe wordoftheSermononthe Mount:"Blessedaretheywho arepersecutedforrighteousness' sake,fortheirsisthekingdomof heaven."

The31-year-oldmissionaryof theSacredHeartpassedflight testsatEssendon,Melbourne, andtookhiswrittenaviationexaminationherebeforesettingout. Heisnowqualifiedasanaviation helicoptermechanic,commercialpilot, pilot,andinstructorin flyingengines,meteorologyand navigation.FatherPatrickbegan aviationtrainingwhileachap- lainattheLewisCollegeofScienceandTechnologyatLockport,Ill.Hehas530flyinghours tohiscreditand crosscountryflightsintheUnited StatesandMexico.

MarianasM.Horishny,O.S.B.M., atSt.George'sCatholicChurch, whichisadministeredbythe BasilianFathers,here.Father Horishnysaidthat.Mrs.Kasenkinahadbeenunderinstruction byhimsincelastSeptember.He saidshewenttoConfessionand receivedHolyCommunionthis morning.

ThisCommunistreticenceisprimarilydictatedby themoralsofexpediency,forineachoftheEasternEuropeannationswheretheSoviet"yes-men"rule,theCatholicChurchiseitherthechiefsocialforceoratleasta hardcor-ofresistance.Hadanyonedoubtedthatthe realstruggleofourtimesisbetweenChristianityand Communism,thereisampleproofathandinEuropethat theonly"reactionary"forcewhichtheRedsfearandtry toliquidateisnotapoliticalpartybuttheCatholic Church.Insofaraspoliticsareconcerned,thereisa tragicstc..ryoffailureallalongtheline.TheSocialists haveeitherthrownintheirlotwithCommunism,asinthe Italianelections,orhavesincerelytriedtoco-operate withitandbeendevouredasinCzechoslovakia.The onlyperseveringpoliticalresistancehascomefromthe peasantparties,andtheirinspirationhasbeensolely groundedinCatholicsocialtheoryandpractice.Inthe faceoftheRedterror,asbutashortwhilebeforeinthe faceofVieNazis,thespiritofthesubjugatednationshas beenembodiedinthepersonofagreatandfearless churchman.TheBishopandnotthepoliticianisthe symbolofhiscountry'sresistancetotyrannyandofits willtofreedom.

Atthisdistancefromthesebarbarouseventsthere maybeatendencyamongsometorelyrathersmuglyon OurLord'spromisethatHisChurchwouldneverfail. That,ofcourse,istrue,butauniversalCommunist victorycouldreducetheChurchinnumbersandinfluence tothecatacombstage.Moreover,weoughttorememberatthisgravehourthepracticalimplicationsofthe MysticalBodyofChrist.Sinceweareallmembersof oneBody,onepartcannotsufferwithoutinvolvingthe other.WhatweinAustraliacanchieflydotohelpthe ChurchSufferinginEuropeistopraythatGodwillgive thegracesoffortitudeandconstancytoHismanyconfessorsandmartyrs.We,inourturn,willshareinthe meritsoftheirsufferings.InthisconnectionwerejoicetohavethesympathyofourAnglicanbrethrenso graciouslyandsincerelyexpressedduringtheweekbythe ArchLishopofCanterbury.HisGrace'srecognitionof thepresent"deadlystruggle"betweenCommunismand ChristianityisasignthatChristianmen,whereverthey arefound,mustclosetheirrankstomeettheonslaughtof thismostterribleenemy.For,astheHolyFatherhas pointedout,thereissufficientfundamentalagreementof allmenofgoodwilltouniteinpreservingthosesocial valuesandinstitutionswhichChristianitycreatedand Communismimperils.
