LONDON,Dec.10-(NC).-Aforgottenvault,discoveredoychancenearthebombedruinsofChelseaOld Church,inLondon'sWestEnd,hasledtoanewattempt toproveordisprovetheancienttraditionthattheheadless bodyofSt.ThomasMorewasburiedthereafterhisexecutionin1535.
Thediscoverywasmadewhen awomangardenerworkinginthe ancientchurchyardcausedasuddensubsidenceofthesoil,disclosingavaultneverknowto theauthoritiesofthenowProtestantparish.
ItisknownthatafterSt ThomasMore'sexecutionon TowerHill,hisdaughter,MargaretRoper,tookthesevered beadtotheRoperfamilyvault atSt.Dunstan's,Canterbury,60 milessouth-eastofLondon.The placeofburialofthemartyr's body,however,hasbeenamatterofmuchcontroversy.The mostwidelyacceptedtheoryis thattheremainsstilllieintheir originalburialplace-thechapel ofSt.PeterAdVincula,inthe oldTowerofLondon,butsome authoritiesfromthesixteenth centuryonwardshaveheldthat thebodywasbroughttoChelsea OldChurch.
Fromdescriptionsgivenby themitwasbelievedtohavebeen interredinthevaultbeneaththe Morefamilychapelthere,under anepitaphpreparedby St. Thomashimselfduringhislifetime.Whenthechurchwas largelydestroyedbybombing duringthewar,theMoreChapel wastheonlypartofthebuilding tosurvive.Whenrebuildingwas ilk plannedtwoyearsago,thisvault wasopenedbutnothingwas found.
Thenewvaultnowdiscovered may,itisbelieved,betheactual vaultinwhichthebodywas placed.Afirstexplorationproducedfragmentsofabrass-stud-
dedcoffinandshredsofcloth,but thesewerefoundtobeofthe eighteenthcentury.Furtherexplorationsoftheunderground areaarenowbeingundertaken.

Beforethewar,thelargerJapanesecitieswerelikeanymodern Westerncity.Theofficesand shopsintownwerereplicasof thoseathome;tramcarsranregunightthestreets,Arewelllightlargelytoallpartsofthecity;at ed(incidentally,electricityislaid onallovertheislands);whilethe suburbanelectrictrainservicebetweenYokohamaandTokyowas equaltothebestanywhere.The distancebetweenYokohamaand Tokyoistwenty-threemiles,and thetraindidthetripintwentysirminutes,withthreestopson theway.Astherehasbeenno opportunity,sincethewar,ofreplacingtherollingstock,thetrip nowtakeshalfanhour.
Mostofthecitieswerebadly damagedduringthewar,but greatstepshavebeenmadeduringthepastthreeyearstorebuildthehouses.Thehousesare small,andtoustheyappear flimsy,buttheyallhaveone thingincommon-theyarespotlesslyclean.OnenteringaJapanesehouse,thefirstthingyou doistotakeoffyourshoesand leavethemjustinsidethefront door.Thenyoustepupintothe house,whichisraisedupaoout footabovegroundlevel.Allof theroomsareflooredwithstraw matscalledtatame.Themats areaboutsixfeetinlength,about threefeetinwidth,andaretwo inchesthick.Theycoverthe wiholefloorspace.Thesizeofthe roomismeasuredbythenumber ofmatsneededtocoverthefloor. Thematsaresofttowalkon, andsavewearandtearonthe socks.Foryoumustremember thatyourshoesireoutatthe frontdoor,andyouwill,notsee themagain'untilyouareready toleave.
Thereisverylittlefurniturein thehouses-afewtablesabouta foothigh,andsomecushionson thefloor.Therearenochairs. SittingdowninJapanisanart whichisacquiredpainfully,and onlyafterlongpractice.Avery thincushionisplacedonthematting;youkneeldownonit,and
thensitbackonyourheels(if youcan).TheJapanesealways sitthatway,anddonotfindour styleofchaircomfortable,but thentheygotusedtotheirown systemwhentheywerechildren, andI,unfortunately,didnot.So forthepresentIcutmyvisits veryshort.Thelengthofmy visitdependsonhowlongthe achesinmylegsstaybearablewhichatthemomentisaboutten minutes.TheJapanesesitthat waytoeattheirmeals,write theirletters,andeventousethe typewriter.Asyouleavethe house,youfindyourshoessetout, facingthedoor,sothatyoucan steprightintothem.Thebetterclasshouseshaveashoe-horn hangingatthefrontdoor,andas itisalmosttwofeetinlength, youdonothavetobenddowin.
TheJapanesehousesarebuiltin astylealltheirown,andthat andwegetminorearthtremors style*asevolvedtosuitthepeculiarlocalconditions.Japanis locatedintheearthquakezone, hereabouttwiceamonth.Normallytheydonodamage,apart fromrockingthehouseforaminuteortwo.Inordertowithstandthetremors,thehousesare builtmainlyofwood,withmudplasterwallsandslidingdoors andwindows.Duringasmall 'quake,thehouserocksalittle, butitdoesnotcrackbadly,or falldown.Itisanuncannyfeelingtobeonthesecondfloorofa house,andtofeelthewholeplace tremblingunderneathyou.There hasnotbeenasevereearthquake inYokohamafortwenty-five years,sonoonepaysanyattentiontothesmalltremors. Whatprobablymisledyouwas thefactthatintheyear1937 AustraliaandNewZealand, throughtheApostolicDelegate, madearequesttoRomefora modificationoftheregulations regardingfastandabstinence.
Thesuggestedamendmentstothe lawsweresubmittedtoRome, andthereasonsfortherequest werealsostated;thereplycame backinOctober,1937.Rome hadgrantedourrequestfora periodoftenyears;butitwould takesometimetopublishand makeknownsuchachange.As therewastobeaPlenaryCouncilofAustraliaandNewZealandintheyear1937,itwasdecidedtoholdoverthepromulgationofthedispensationuntil thatCouncilissueditsdecrees.At theendofthatassemblytheBishopswhohadgatheredissued theirdecrees,andtheregulations 116, theyhadmadefortheportionof theChurchundertheirjurisdic-

HisGracethankedthepeople ofSubiacoandWembleywho weresohelpfultotheSisters sincetheirarrival.Hefeltconfidentthattheywouldcontinue tohelpthemineveryway.The Sistersweregivinginreturnto thechildrenoftheseparishes whatnomoneycouldpurchase, viz.,theloveoffaithfulhearts andthecourageofnoblesouls.
Rev.FatherH.Wallace, C.S.S.R.,madetheappealfor thereductionofthedebt.He secondedHisGrace'sremarks concerningtheworkofthenuns, ashisownexperienceofthemin NewZealandandtheEastern Stateshadconfirmedhisopinions. TheFaithwithouttheteaching Ordersarounduscouldbelikened toabodyWithoutasoul.Hence toseeourfuturechildrenreceivingtheprivilegesofasound Christianeducationwasaresponsibilitygiventous,and thereforetherewasaneedtobe asgenerousaspossibleinthe matterofreducingthedebtthe nunshadenteredinto.Atthe present,200,000childrenwere beingeducatedintheCatholic schools.
