But,eveninthisanswer,youcan sensethevaguenessofawornoutplatitude,andyoubeginto realisethatthecentralandfundamentalideaorChristmashas beenlost.Andthatisatragedy.Forwhathasbeenlostis thatChristmasshouldmean somethingvividly,intimately personalbetweentheindividual andtherealPerson,JesusChrist.

ThereIsnoonesouninformed thathedoesnotknowthatthe 25th.Decemberisthedayon ashichwecommemoratethe BirthdayoftheChildJesus.Believerandunbelieveralike,by theveryfactthattheChristmas seasonhassomeeffectontheir lives,payatleastunconscious homagetoJesusChristonHis Birthday.Buttheimpression gainedisthattheessentialsof Christmasarebeingmissedbecause'ithasbecomeamerecommemoration-aremembranceof aneventthathappened,yes,but Oh,solongago.Anditisthis subtleinsidiousheresywhich mustbecombated-evenamong Catholics-bysoundCatholic doctrine,inparticular,thedoctrinethatJesusChrist,having risenfromthedead,isaliving Personwhocanandshouldbeintimateinourlives.

Christmasisnotjustamere commemorationofapastevent. Inthat,Christmasandtheother feastsoftheChurch'sliturgical year,differfromthecommemorationsthatrunthecycleofthe civicyear.FortheMysteries ofChristcelebratedbythe Churchinherfeastsrenewand reenactthemselvesyearinand yearoutforeachindividual soul,sothatinarealsense Christ'sbirth,alltheeventsof Hislife,Hissufferings,Hisdeath, HisResurrectionandHisAscensioncanbecomeforusliving realitiesandrealcausesofour sanctification.

ButbecausethisistheChristmasseason,letusseeinwhat sensethis,thefeastofChrist's Bighday,canbecomeforusa livingrealityandarealcause ofsanctification.Thekeyto thequestionispresentedbythe Churchwheninherliturgyshe speaksnotonlyofthecomingof Christthatispast,Hiscoming tothestableatBethlehem,but alsoofthecomingofChristthat ispresent,Hiscomingtothespul bySanctifyingGrace

Twoquestions,therefore, claimourattention.Firstly, howcanChristbesaidtocome tothesoulbyGrace?Secondly,howdoesconsiderationofHis cominginthestableatBethlehemeffectHiscomingtothesoul byGrace?

HowcanChristbesaidto cometothesoulbyGrace? SanctifyingGrace,theCatechismtellsus,makesussharers i"theDivineLifeofChrist,so
