PEIPING,China,Nov.29-(NC).-RequiemMass. accordingtotheTrappistritual,wascelebratedinthePeitangCathedralhereforthereposeofthesoulsof33TrappistmonkswhodiedatthehandsofChineseCommunists fromAugust,1947,toMay,1948.

All33victimsweremembers eftheMonasteryofOurLady ofConsolation,atYangkiaping, 85mileswestofhere.Themonasterywassackedandburnedby CommunistsonAugust28last year.Ofthe75monksatYangkiapingwhenitwasseizedby theReds,sixwereexecutedat PanP'uEsun,Chahar,inlate January,and27diedofmaltreatmentorillnessinsqualid mountainprisons.

Afuneralservicewasalsoheld hereuponreceiptofnewsconfirmingthedeathinRedhands ofBrothersBasilYuan,John CapistranoTien,DamienHuang. andJohnMarieMias.Their deathhasnotpreviouslybeen reported.

Moreover,decentburialhad beendeniedtomostofthevictims.Theirbodieswerecommittedwithoutceremonytoshallow,unmarkedgraves.

Ofthevictims28wereChinese,threewereFrench,one DutchandoneCanadian.Fourteenwerepriestsand19were Brothers.

ThesixexecutedlastJanuary arenowknowntohavebeenshot todeath.Theydidnotdieby stoning,asvillagersoncereported.

MostoftheYangkiaping monkswhosurvivehavenow beensetatliberty,andoperate adairynearhere.Oneofthe Trappistsstillalive,butinCommunistshands,isFatherMaurus Bougon,a48-year-oldFrench priest.Accusedatmobtrials

HesaidthathalfofChina's Catholicsliveinprovinces noweitherunderCommunistcontrolorindangerof fallingtotheReds.

FatherO'Farrell,writing inJesuitMissionsmagazine,publishedhere,said saidthisterritoryhas1,800 foreignand1,300Chinese priestsand1,000foreign and2,000Chinesenuns,who carefor10,000orphansin 160orphanages;feed15.000 otherchildren;nurse20,000 patientsin170hospitals; give4,000,000medicaltreatmentsayear,andeducate 175,000childrenin2,700 schools.

Youthmustnotonlybearilpreparedforparticular careers,butmustalsobewellequippedtomeetthe manydifficultiesofenvironment.Anyformofeducation whichdoesnotstresssoundChristianprinciplescan haveverylittlesuccess.

IfwearetohaveaChristianAustralia,thenWe mustgiveouryouththefullbenefitofChristianEducation.RecentlytheresultsofaGallupPollonthe questionofreligiouseducationappearedinthelocal press.Thoughwemustaccepttheresultofsucha pollwithlimitations,yetGallupPollshaveprovedin mostcasestobeafairindicationofthelinesonwhich peoplearethinking.That90percent.shouldfavour religiousinstructioninStateSchoolsisareasonable indicationthatthepublicgenerallyfeelthat,toputit mildly,educationwithoutreligioustrainingisveryinadequate.

Aboutthesantetime:isAustraliancitizenswere expressingtheirviewsonreligiouseducation,HisHolinessPopePiusXIIwasbroadcastingtotheInterAmericanCongressonCatholicEducationinLaPaz, Bolivia.HisHolinessdefinededucationasaco-operationwithDivineGraceintheformationoftrueand perfectChristians,whichincludesthetaskofenabling theChristian,assuch,toconfrontthedemandsofthe timesinwhichhelives.

ThePontiffurgedtheneedofimpartingaprofound consciousnessofreligioustruthsthroughagradually developedcurriculumofreligiousinstruction.Heemphasisedthatreligionshouldhaveaparticularplaceof honourinourUniversitiesandothercentresofhigher learning,inordertoovercomethedoubtsanddifficultiesexperiencedbystudentsbecauseoftheirunavoidablecontactswithpersonsanddoctrinesopposedto Christianity.

HisHolinesscontinuedthattheatmosphereofexcessiveindependenceandlibertyprevalentinourdays shouldbecounteredbyinstillinggreaterrespectfor authorityandasenseofresponsibility.TheHoly Fatherstressedthepartparentsshouldplayinthe educationoftheirchildren,byco-operationthrough CatholicAction,studygroups,andsimilarinstitutions.

JohnMageewaselectedPresidentoftheSt.Vincent dePaulSocietyfor1948.IcongratulatethePresident andthemembersontheworkdoneduringtheyear,and especiallyfortheverypleasantafternoontheyprovided forthelittleorphansatCastledare.

Averypleasingfeatureofthespiritualoutlook amongtheboysisthesteadystreamofvocationsto thePriesthoodandtheReligiouslife.OurcongratulathmsandbestwishesareofferedtoPatCunningham, whohasbeenselectedbyHisGracetocontinuehis studiesforthePriesthoodinRome.OtherAquinians studyingforthePriesthoodareLaurenceEdwardswho isattheJuniorSeminary,Guildford,andDavidKennedy,memberofthePassionistCongregation,whois studyinginAdelaide.AquinashasthreerepresentativesattheChristianBrothers'TrainingCollege,Strathfield,NS.WTheyareTamesFarrell.NormanWilson. andbikeFlanagan.

TheAnnualRetreatfortheseniorboystookplace atthebeginningoftheSecondTerm.Itwasconducted bytheRev.FatherMcCarthy,O.M.I.,whocongratulated theboysontheearnestnesswithwhichtheyentered intothespiritualexercisesoftheRetreat.

JohnMageewaselectedSeniorPrefect,andCaptain oftheCollegefor1948.Johnhasprovedaveryefficient leaderandhasbeenaidedinhisresponsibleofficeby anexcellentgroupofprefects-JohnWalsh,NeillHampton,ThomasMeagher,JohnFrisina,andTerenceMerchant.

TheExaminationResultspublishedinJanuarythis yearwereverysatisfactory.Twenty-three(23)boysobtainedtheLeavingCertificate,andthereweretwopartialpasses.Thereweretwenty-four(24)distinctions, andeighteen(18)qualifiedforMatriculation.Frederick Albrechtobtainedthebestpass-sevensubjectsand livedistinctions.WilliamSilverstoneandLeonard Pethickpassedinsevensubjectswiththree(3)distinctionseach.

Thirty-three(33)passedtheJuniorCertificate.RonaldCameronwasawardedaLynnScholarshiponhis excellentJuniorresults.

TheChristianBrothers'SecondarySchoolsAssociationofW.A.conductsannualexaminationsforSub)uniorandFirstYearJunior(lasses.Thecompetitive elementintheseexaminationsstimulatesinterestand keennessinstudy.

IntheSub-Juniorsection,Aquinassecuredfiveout Hofthefirstsixplacesintheaggregate.ClemEllieswas tirst,AlexHoransecond,NormanDysonfourth.Ron LambertfifthandJamesBushersixth.

BoysleavingschoolattheJuniorstandardhavea veryelementaryeducation.Thetwofollowingyears areinvaluableforcharactertrainingandgeneraleducation.Thepupilofaverageabilitywhoispreparedto work,cansucceedinpassingtheLeaiingCertificate, whichopensupmanyexcellentavenuesofemployment thatareclosedtocandidatesbelowthatstandard.

TheCommonwealthGovernmentispreparedtopay :illfeesandgrantallowance,uptoL150peryear'to successfulLeavingCertificatestudents,whoarcpreparedtocontinuetheirstudiesataUniversity,orother approvededucationalinstitution.PullinformationregardingtheschemeoffinancialassistancecanbeobtainedfromtheBranchOfficeoftheUniversities'Commission,c/otheUniversity,Nedlands.Assistanceis giventothefollowingstudentsinW.A.-Medicine,six: Dentistryfour;Vet.Sciencefour;Arts,Law,Education andEconomicsthirty.

TheDuxoftheCollegefor1948isJohnMagee. Johndeserveshissuccess.Hehasprovedhimselfa veryconscientiousstudent.Therunner-upfortheDux PrizeisJohnFrisina.

1948hasbeenamostsuccessfulyearforourCadet unit,whichthisyearattainedastandardwellabovethe average.CaptainB.F.Prindiville,0.C.,wasablyassistedbyCadetLieutenantsJohnMagee,JohnWalsh, NeillHampton.ThomasMeagherandDerryBarry. Theseboysdeserveourcongratulationsonobtaining theircommissions,andontheefficientdischargeof theirduties.

LeslieArisprovedacompetentSergeant-Major, whilstthedutiesofQuarter-Masterwereablycarried nutbyTerenceMerchant,assistedbyCorporalsFrancis Tyson,PeterSaundersandDermotO'Connor.

OurCadetunitprovidedaguardofhonourforthe BlessedSacramentontheFeastofChristtheKing,and alsoduringtheprocessioninhonourofOurLadyat SouthPerthit*May. WiththeconclusionoftheannualAssociationtournament, theredoesnotappeartobemuch fallingoffinattendance,astwo orthreecourtsarestallrequired forplayonSaturdayandSunday.Nighttennisisalsoprovingverypopular,andseveral partiesarearrangedamongst members.Recentlya"busy bee"wasorganisedtopaintthe linesonNos.1and2courts,and thefinishedresultisveryattractive.Nos.3and4courtswill bepaintedonSaturdaymorning, December18th.,andagood"rollup"ofmembersisrequested.

Thepartyofjuniormembers andprospectivemembersare makinggoodprogressunderthe competentsupervisionofMr.H. Atthemeetingoftheclubexecutiveheldrecently.itwasdecidedtocarryoutaprogramme ofworksandreconditioningof thecourtsandgrounds.This programmeisalreadyinoperation,andthegroundsandpavilionareshowingamarkedimprovement.Thisworkhasbeen carriedoutbyafewofthemale membersonSaturdayafternoons, andwiththehelpofafewmore members,weshouldhavethe placelookingveryattractive onceagain.

Asusualatthistimeofthe yeartheattendanceatthecourts onSundayshasdroppedoff,but someofthekeenermembersare alreadygettingintopracticefor theclubtournamentinthenew year.

Theclubstillhasroomfornew members,andanyCatholicwishingtojointheclubwillbeonly toowelcomeiftheycometothe courtsandmakethemselves known.Beginnerswillbecoachedbyexperiencedplayersand giveneveryassistance.

Shetakesavowofchastity,one ofobediencetohersuperiors, andavowofpoverty.She strivesafterthepurity,obelicore,andpovertyofChristinher privatelife.Throughcontinual practicesheacquiresaloveof prayer,andanunspendsmore timeincommunicationwithher Godeachdaythanyouprobably spendinaweekormore.

Theseareonlythebeginnings ofthereligiouslife:shetakes eachofthevirtues,humility,patience,resignation,mortification. self-restraint,andbyassiduous practicethroughthe years, strivestomakeherselfmoreperfect,lesssubjecttotheattractionsofthisworld,moremaster ofherhumannature,moresin less,moreliketoherideal, ChristOurLord.

Thisistheprimaryworkofa religiousmanorwomanThisis thesideofthenun'slifeabout whichyouknownothing.The secondaryobjectoftheirexistenceasanorder,whichyoudo notseemtoappreciateeither,rs tohelptopropagatetheteaching ofChristthroughtheschools, hospitals,andinstitutionswhich theyconduct.Tosaythatthey areonlyordinaryteachersand nursesshowsgreatignorance, andwereitsaidbyonewhoknew themeaningofthereligiouslife, wouldbethegreatestinsultyou couldoffertoourreligiousmen andwomen.Farfrombeing whatyoucallthem,theyareextraordinaryteachersandnurses.
