TheThirdAnnualPlainChantFestival,whichtookplacelastweek, gavestrikingproofoftheremarkableprogressthathasbeenmadeinsuch ashortperiod.Fourthousandchildrentookpartinthecompetitions, andthestandardwasuniformlyhigh,astheAdjudicator'sreporton thispagetestifies.NohighertributecouldbepaidtotheDiocesan DirectorofSacredMusic(Rev.AlbertLynch)thantheproficiencyand enthusiasmevincedbythesethousandsofschoolchildren.
Eachyearitisnowassuredthat therewillberecruitedintotheparish choirs,hundredswell-trainedinthe sight-readingofliturgicalmusicandin singingthechant,besidesaccomplished organistsandothersproficientinthe artofconducting.Thebeautifulmusic heardbythosepresentattheMassesof thefestivalweekwillbetheregularexperienceofallineverypartofthe Archdiocese.

TheRussell'sViper,asitsnamesuggests,bringsforthitsyoungalive. Onesnakemayhaveasmanyasthirty young,everyoneofthem,thoughonly sixincheslong,carrythedeadlyViper venomintheirtinypoisonglands, Thereisdeathawaitingyouinthese fewinchesofRussell'sViper.Unlike theCobratheRussell'sViperhasvery longfangs,three-quarterofaninch long,andtheseliefoldedalongthe upperlip.WhenitbitestheViper hasastabbingaction.Itcannot hangon.Itjustinjectsitsvenom andletsgo.TheCobrawithitsshort fangsplacedalmostatrightanglesto theupperjaw,bitesandholdson. Viperpoisonactsonthebloodstream, attackingthebloodvessels.TheeffectsofViperpoisoningaregenerallyverypainful,anddeathmaytakelong incoming.

InIndiawehavethreevarietiesof Cobra-theSpectacledCobrawhich wearstwowhiteringsonitsexpanded hood;themonocledcobrawhichhas onlyonering,andtheblindorblack Cobra.Ihaveheardofacobrawith adoublepairofspectacles,onebelow theother,butthisvarietyofcobrais notsocommon.TheNaiaTripudians, orthespectacledCabro,isthemost commonintheplains.Itreachesa lengthoffiveandahalffeet,though amissionaryoncetoldmehehadkilledonemeasuringsevenfeet.
ThereisstillanothertypeofCobra, theHamadrayad,orNaiaBungarus. TheHamadrayadiscommonlyknown astheKingCobra.UnliketheordinaryCobrawhichischaracterisedbya hood,theKingCobrahasnohood,but threedarkringstakeitsplace.Isaw aKingCobrawhichhadjustbeen shotwitha12boregun.Itmeasured 12feet.Therearestilllargerspecimensgoingupto15feet.TheKing Cobraisthemostaggressiveofthe snakesanditgiveschase.

BishopO'Collinssaidthattherewere sonsanddaughterswhofounditmore thantheycoulddotolookafteraged andinfirmparents.InNazareth Housetheywouldfindaplace,where theywouldbewelcomedandwhere theywouldbeproperlycaredforThe orphans,whowouldbetakenevenas infants,wouldbereceivedandtended withthecareofamotheit'love.Such childrenwouldprobablybebetteroff anddobetterinlaterlifethanmany childreninfamiliesincomfo;tablecircumstances,becausetheSistersloved childrenandtherewasnothinginthe worldtoogoodforthem.Theywantedthebestfortheirchildren,andalso fortheagedandinfirmspendingtheir decliningyearsintheirmidst.In NazarethHouseCatholicandnonCatholicwouldbereceivedwiththe samewarmthofcharityandloveby theSisters,becausetheywerebrothers inChrist.
ItwasbecauseofthisChristiancharity,whichdictatedauniversallove amongstallpeoplethattheSistersof Nazarethhadundertakenthiswork.
WhydidtheseSistersleavetheir homesandtheirrelations,theircountryandtheirfriendstocometoGeraldton,erectthisbuildingandcarry ontheirwonderfulworkwithinits wallsofcaringforthosenotwanted bytheworld?Whatcouldtheyex. pectfortheirtoil?Threemealsper dayandabed,andthehopeofa happydeath.Theywere,however, inspiredbythetruestinstinctsof Christiancharityandthedivinityof God.DeprivetheseSistersofthe divinityoftheirGodandtheywould foresaketheconventforavocationsin lifewhichwouldprovemoreprofitable.

(1)IthasnofoundationintheBible itself.FortheBiblenowheresays thatitisthesoleandsufficientguide forthosewhowishtoknowanddo God'swill.Onthecontrary,theBible insistsonthenecessityoforalteaching.Examinethefollowingtexts: Matt.,XXVIII.,20;Mark,XVI.,15; Rom.,X.,14-17. MuchthatOurLorddidandtaught wasnotwritten.SeeJohnXX.,30; XXI.,25.

ByTraditionismeantthebodyof truthsrevealedbyChristtoHisApostles,orrevealedtothemafterHisAscensionbytheHolySpirit,notcontainedinScripture,butpreservedand taughttoeachsucceedinggeneration bytheliving,teachingauthorityofthe Church.

TWELVEyearshadhardlyelapsed sincethefoundationoftheSeraphicOrder,andalreadythe FriarsMinorshadconventsinItaly, Spain,France,Germany,andeven Palestine;theblessingofHeavenhad giventhemgracetoincreaseandmultiplyeverywhere.TheSecondOrder, theOrderofthePoorClares,though threeyearsyounger,wasnotlessflourishingthanitspredecessor.Theexample,preaching,andmiraclesofSt. FrancishadmovedEuropeandinspiredauniversalattractiontowards thecloister,andfromeveryrankof lifecamegeneroussoulswhotookrefugeunderthebannerofthePatriarch ofAssisiorhisgloriousdaughterSt. Clare.Clericsandlaity,whomsacred engagementsortheobligationsoftheir stateinliferetainedintheworld,were grievedtheycouldnotfollowthegeneralmovementthatwasdrawingpeopletowardssolitude.Many,wearyof (fa.),ofcorruptionandanarchy, cametoconsultthesaintandaskhim foraruleoflifedrawnupbyhisown hand,inoF4ertowalkmoresecurely inthewaysofChristianperfection. Thiswork,likeallFrancis's,orrather allGod'sworks,wasborninsilence andobscurity.PassingthroughPoggiBonziinTuscany,onhiswayfrom FlorencetoSienna,thesaintmetone ofhisoldfriends,themerchantLuchesio.Forsomemonthshewasno longerrecognisableasthehard,avariciousmanhehadbeen,andwasedifyingbyhisliberalalmsgivingthose whomhisselfishnesshadscandalised. Theysawhimhelpingtheneedy,caringthesickinthehospitals,keeping openhouseforpilgrims,anddefending therightsoftheHolySee.Inhis zealousardourhetried,butinvain, toinspirehiswife,BonaDonna,with thesamesentiments.Apiouswoman, buthearkeningtoomuchtotheprudenceoftheflesh,shewasoneof thosemothersoffamilieswhoarealwaysafraidtheywillnothaveground enoughtostandon,andtherefore sharplycensuredherhusbandforhis prodigality.Amiracleconvertedher. AllwhoprofesstheCatholicFaith, andafilialsubmissiontotheHolySee, maybeadmittedintotheThirdOrder. Nevertheless,fourconditionsarerequired:-

(3)ToobservetheCommandments ofGodandtheChurchandinaddition whateverisprescribedbytheRule.

TheRuledoesnotobligeunderpain ofevenvenialsin,havingnoother moving-spiritorsanctionthanlove andgoodwill.

Allthesecompetitorsandtheir schoolsaretobecongratulatedon theirenterprise,whichhasbeenattendedwithsuchsplendidsuccess.
Forayeartheyhadmadeexacting sacrificesandteachershaddevoted precioustimetowardsthemastering ofthismusic,andnow theendof thecompetitionscamethismostbeautifulfunctionofall-theofferingofall intheHolyMass.Thiscountedincomparablymorethananythingelse. Theyhaddonewellinthecompetitions,andjudgedaccordingtoearthly standards;buttheirrealstandardwas aheavenlyone.TheymustneverforgetthatGodwaslisteningtothem, thatitwasforHimtheyhadstriven todotheirbest.
"WhoknowswhatmarksHehas placedagainstthevariousindividuals andschoolswhohavetakenpartin thisfeastofsong?"saidFatherLynch.
"Perhapssomesmallschool,withits multitudeoflittlewillingsacrifices, hasfoundfirstplaceintheeyesof God."
Whatmatteredwasnotthecompetitionmarks,theplacetheyfilled,but spiritwhichwasbehindtheirefforts. Thissubjectwasnotlearntas otherswere,tofitthemtoearnalivingandmaketheirwayintheworld. RatheritwasalliedtoChristianDoctrine,thattheymightthebetterassistintheofferingoftheHolySacrificeoftheMass.Hehopedtheywould neverforgetthistraining,butwould alwaysbewillingandabletoplaytheir partwheneveraMissaCantatawas celebrated,TheChurchhadruled thatinsuchaMasstheirpartentitled themtotheroleofministerswiththe priest.Theywerethenparticipating morethanbymerelybeingpresent. Thustheyshouldbeanxioustoseize everyopportunitytodosointheir parochialchurches.
Especialthankswereduetothe priestswhohadshownunflaggingenthusiasmandgonetoconsiderable troubletoprovideopportunitiesfor thelearningofthemusic.Inevery parish,eveninthecountry,thepriest hadendeavouredtoarrangeachildren'sMissaCantataonceamonth.
Chaplainshaddonethisinmanycolleges,too,andotherswerepreparing todoso.Godwouldcertainlybless theseeffortsandbringsuccesstotheir work.MembersoftheAltarSociety hadalsoearnedtheirgratitude.LookingroundtheCathedralonecouldsee everywherethemarksofalovingdevotion,tooffertoGodtheverybest thatwasours.Sowasthemelody risingfromtheirlipsmadebeautiful, andcalculatedtoraisetheirhearts alsoanddirectattentionontheMass.
TheChurchherselfhadgiventhem thosegloriousmelodies,sungbyher childrenalldownthecenturies.It wasevenpossiblethatsometheyhad chantedthatmorningwerewrittenbeforethefifthcentury.
Theirpatronthatmorning,the"LittleFlower,"whowasthegreatsaintof moderntimes,hadshownthetremendouspoweroflittlethingswelldone. Shehadtakeninfinitepainsoverjust suchlittlethings,thelongdaysofexactingpractiseandthedisappointments,astheyhadendured.To-day, thetwoandahalfthousandofthem placedalltheirofferingstogether,and withtheirvoicesrisinginunisonlike oneofthebeautifulcolumnsofthe CathedralitselftoldGodthemost beautifulthingstheChurchhastosay andinthemostappropriateway-the Church'sownsong.
Thisthoughtshouldthrilltheir hearts,andtakeawayanylingering disappointmentwhichthecompetitions mighthaveleft.FortheyweregivingeverythingtoAlmightyGod.

TheFestivalclosedwiththefinal concertatAnzacHouseat8p-m.on Friday,October3. HisGracethe ArchbishopwasrepresentedbyRt. Rev.MonsignorB.Fagan,V.G.,who presenteddiplomastothewinning choirsandtheprize-winnersinthe sectionsfororganaccompanimentand conducting.
ThewinningchoirsfromAquinas College,SacredHeartHighSchool, Highgate,St.Joseph'sParishSchool, Fremantle,theparishschoolsofBeaconsfieldandClaremont,eachsang severalGregorianChantmelodiesfrom theirrepertoire.Theaudience,which despitetheverywildnight,wasafairlylargeone,wasverydelightedwhen boththeSacredHeartHighSchooland ClaremontParishSchoolsangthe"TanturnErgo,"conductedbyoneoftheir ownchildrenwiththegreatestofcon. fidenceandprecision.Therestof theitemsweresungunderthedirection ofRev.FatherLynch. Thesecondhalfoftheprogramme consistedofaviolinsolobytheRev. FatherAlbertLynch,followedbya groupofsongsbyMissZoeLenegan, whoselovelyliquidsopranovoiceheld herlisteners'raptattention. Mr. BrewsterJones,whogaveagroupof 'cellosolos(by)andpermissionof theAustralianBroadcastingCommis. sion),astonishedtheaudience(especi allytheyoungermemberofthechoirs) withhisvirtuosity.Buttherewas moretoitthanthat;therewasalso solidmusicianshipanddeepfeeling. MissLindaBarbergaveagroupofcontraltosongs.Herwarmvoiceand sincereinterpretationmadeeverymomentofitajoy.Mr.SidneyLynch hasneversungsowellashedidinthe closinggroupofthisconcert,and ablyabettedbyhiswife,whoplayed hisaccompaniments,heensnaredhis audienceinthemeshesofatraptocapturea"green-eyeddragon."Thiswas toomuchforthejuniorsectionofthe audience,whodemandednothingbetterthantobecarriedoffinthisfashion again.Theaccompanistfortheother itemswasthewell-knownpianist, DorisTyler,whosepolishedworkwas anevidentinspirationtotheartists sheaccompanied. SomesaythatisFascism.When businessandlabourguidethingsin anyorganisedway,andtheGovernmenthelpsthem,itis,theysay,Fascism.Andtheysaythatitmeans dictatorshipandgovernmentalcontrol ofreligion,educationandthepress, andallhumanrights.Nothingcould belesstrue.
Thedifferencesarethere,andeachis acrucialdifference.ThefirstdifferenceisthatunderaFascistschemeof thingstheGovernmentcreatesand controlsthebusiness,farmerandlabourorganisations;theorganisations arenotthepeople'sownbuttheGovernment's.Thesecondisthatthe Governmentdoesmostoftheworkand theGovernment-createdorganisations dolittle.Andthethirdisthatthe purposeisnotjusticeandtheorganisedandorganiclifeofthepeopletorule theirownworkandownershipforthe commongood,butsomethingelse,usuallynationalglory,warandempire.
Ifwemarkthesedifferenceswecan moveforwardandgladlyforgettheold competitionofagenerationagoand stillmoregladlyturnourbacksonthe presentdominationbybigbusiness andbigfinance.Butitisnoeasy roadwestarton.Itmeansenteringa newera,a"neworder."Thenew ordercanbeaworseorder.Itcanbe Communism.OritcanbetheNazi schemeofalmostcompleteGovernmentdictationandwithlittleorno interventionofbusinessorlabourorganisations.OritcanbetheFascist betterbutnotgoodplanofatleast someactionbyagovernmentally-dominated,thoughorganised,people.
Oritcanbearightbalancebetween theGovernmentandthefreeorganisationsofbusiness,labourandfarmers. Anditcanbethislast,dedicatedto domesticwelfareandworldco-operation.Thatisourhope.
ThechargesofFascismanddictatorshipoughtnottokeepusfromacting. Butweoughttorealisethatthe changeswillhemade.

SometimepreviouslyDomMoreno hadpromisedtocomposeapieceof musicspeciallyfortheband.Pressureofworkhadnotallowedhimthe opportunitybefore,buthepromised theboyshewouldwritethemaspecial marchintimefortheopeningofthe newClontarfChapelonDecember21. Itwouldbecalledthe"Clontart March,"andnobandintheworld wouldbepermittedtoplayitother thantheirown.Thisannouncement wasreceivedwithtremendousenthusiasm,andMr.McCormackpromised that,withtheco-operationoftheboys, theywouldendeavourtopresenttheir ownMarchinacreditablemanner.
Sothattheband'sfirstappearance willhaveanaddedinterestforthepeopleofthisState.Butthereisone centraldifficultyyettobeovercome. Hehadsincefoundthatcolourmade nodifferencetothispointofview. Whenpeoplegrewoldtheywouldnot leaveoldsurroundingsandoldfriends. Hehadhadtheunpleasantnessofhavingtoarrangeforoldpeopletobesent toinstitutionsinPerthandthestill morepainfuldutyofrefusingtoallow themtoreturntoGeraldton,whenhe visitedthemsubsequentlyinthese homes.Thiswouldnotbenecessary inthefutureandthesepeopleinenteringNazarethHousewouldnotbe leavingtheirfriendsandthedistrictto whichtheyweresomuchattached.A fatherwouldnothesitatetosendhis childrentoNazarethHouseifhesufferedthebereavementofhiswife.He couldkeepintouchwithhischildren whilstcontinuingwithhiswork.He hadreceivedfromtheMotherHouse atHammersmithacablegramthepreviousdayextendingcongratulationsto allassociatedwiththeopeningofthis newinstitutionandassuringtheSistersthatthemembersofthecommunityinallpartsoftheworldwouldbe withtheminspiritandprayersthat day. Soldiersdrawnfromallpartsofthe BritishEmpirewereinEnglandat present,andineveryinstancethese soldierssalutedtheSistersofNazareth,
concludedtheBishop.Theyknew theirhabitandrecognisedtheSisters. Manyofthesesoldiershadreceived theirearlytrainingandeducationin NazarethHousesindifferentpartsof theEmpire,andtheylookedonthese institutions,wherevertheyfoundthem, ashome,Theyweremadewelcomeby theSistersandtheyknewit.Itwas amarvellousspiritandonetestifying totheinterestwhichtheSistersdisplayedintheirchildrenthroughout theirlives.HethankedGodthat theyhadbeenprovidedwiththeopportunityofsecuringinthisnorthern districttheservicesofsuchexcellent Sistersforsuchanobleworkaswas tobedonehere.Godwouldnodoubt richlyblesstheirendeavoursandwhateversupportthepubliccouldgive wouldberichlyrewarded.Hewould likethemtounderstand,whilstthey werelooking'throughthiswonderful buildingthattheSisterswouldwelcomeanyassistancetheycouldgiveit. TheyshouldnotlabourunderthemisapprehensionthattheSistersdidnot wantclothingandfood,orotherassistancewhichtheycouldofferthem.The Sisterswouldlookaftertheirflock bothyoungandold,buttheywould welcomehelpandwouldofferthem theopportunityofassistinginawork theycouldnotundertakethemselves. Theywereallagreedthattheoldand theorphonsshouldbeproperlycared for,buttherewerefewwhocoulddo muchinthisdirection.TheSisters wouldprovidethemwiththeopportunityofatleastassistinginthework andhefeltconfidentthattheywoulo begenerousintheireffortsinthisdirection.Anyhelpgivenwouldbe deeplyappreciated,ItwaswithpleasurethathecalleduponthePremierto declareNazarethHouseofficiallyopen.
ThePremier(Hon.J.C.Willcock saidheknewtheyweregoingtodo wonderfulworkatNazarethHouse.He wishedtheSisterseverysuccess:he knewtheywouldbesuccessful.On behalfoftheGovernment,ofthepeopleoftheState,andparticularly everybodypresent,andonhisownbehalf,hewishedtheSisterseverysuccessintheworktheyhadundertaken, andonitsencouraginginauguration thatafternoon.Hehadpleasurein officiallydeclaringthebuildingopen.
TheRev.FatherHannigan,C.SS,R., inthecourseofaneloquentaddress, referredtotheworkoftheSistersof NazarethfromthetimeoftheestablishmentoftheinstitutionatHammersmithinLondonin1864.Therewere nowsixtyhousesscatteredthroughout theBritishEmpireandinAmerica.
Australiapossessedfivehouses,GeraldtonsharingthehonourwithBallarat, MelbourneandBrisbane.Throughout theworldeveryNazarethHousewasa homewheretheorphanwasreceivedin thenameofChrist,andcaredforby theSisterswithsuchloveanddevotionasalmosttomakethemforget theirsadstartinlife,thatofnever havingknownamother'stenderaffection.ThedoorsofNazarethHouse wereeveropenwidetowelcomefriendlessorimpoverishedmenandwomen, andtoofferthemintheirdeclining yearsatruehomeofrestandpeace, ToCatholicsweregivenalltheconsolationsoftheirreligion;atthesame timetherewouldbenointerference withtheconvictionsofnon-Catholics.

Ofold,OurSaviourcommandedthe storm-tossedwatersand"therecamea greatcalm."True,butconditionsare quitedifferentinthecaseofhuman beingsendowedwiththeprerogative offreewill.Firstofall,evenan Omnipotentandall-holyGodcouldnot setasidethestandardsofholinessand saytous:dojustwhatsuitsyou:be justorunjust,pureorimmoral,andI willgrantyoupeaceirrespectiveofthe characterofyourthoughts,wordsand deeds.Moreover,Hecannotcoerce thehumanwillwhichHehasendowed withtheprivilegeoffreeanddeliberate choice.Hehassaid:"MypeaceIgive you,MypeaceIleaveyou,"andHis peaceinhumanheartsisdependent upontheobservanceoftheDivine moralcodeoftheTenCommandments, Whenmanrefusesto"offerhisrational servicetotheLord,"hebecomesenslavedtothelowerinstinctsofthe humanheart."Thereisnopeacefor thewicked,"saidthegoodGod.All high-soundingpropheciesaboutthe transformingpeace-givinginfluenceof a"neworder"willproveunavailing,if divorcedfromthedivineauthorityof theTenCommandments.
Therootcausethenofthemisery andanarchyinwhichcivilisationis founderingisapostasyfromGod. Alongthatwayliesdeath,temporal
andeternal.Thereturnofindividuals andnationstoGodinsincerityof heartistheonlyefficaciousremedyfor theevilsthatoverwhelmus-theonly waytosecurityandlastingpeace.
Everyprogrammeofworldrecovery inwhichtheteachingofJesusChrist doesnotoccupythepivotalposition isdoomedtofailure.Itdoesnotgo totherootofthetrouble.
Itfollows,therefore,thatthepressingneedofthehouris,notthedrawingupbyanassemblyofmeremenof aso-called"neworder,"butrather,the applicationtothedailylivesofindividuals,families,governmentsandnationsoftheOrderpromulgatedinthe GospelofJesusChrist,theSonof God.
