The ofCashelhascutferedanotherlossbythedeathofVery Rev.PatrickCanonMurphy,theesteemedpastorofMoyne,Thurles, whosedeathmarksthepassingofthe fourthparishpriestofthearchdiocese withinbutafewmonths. CanonITurphy,whowas,aged68, hadbeenillforseveralmonths.His death,thoughnutunexpected,aroused feelingsofdeepregretinhispariete ione.-sandfellow-clergy. Asimple andunassuming,typicalIrishsoggarth aroon,hewroughtmuchgoodduring hiscareerofforty.year,,. FatherMurphywasanativeofCionoulty.HewasordainedatMaynooth in1880.andactedascuratesuccessivelyinKillenaule,Templemore,andTipperary.Inthelatterplace,wherehe spentmanyyears.hewashighlyreveredandrespected.Inaquiet,unostentatiouswayCanonMurphysought topromotethespiritualandtemporal advancementofhisflock.Tohimwas inlargemeasureduetheinitiationand spreadoftheco-operativeideawhich hasprovedsoadvantageoustothe dairyfarmersandsmallholdersofCo Tipperary.Appointedparishpriestof Moynein1909,hewasactiveinhis ministrationuntilwtihinafewmoi-alis ofhisdeath.

GOVERNMENTANDTHEHOUSINGPROBLEM.

PresidentCosgraverecentlyino-yducedaHousingBillinDailEfreann, toprovidefortheerectionof3,000 houses,theexpenditureingrantstobe £300,000.Themainobjectwastoalleviateunemploymentandtosupply dwellingsfortheworkingclassesata rentwhichtheymightheabletopay. PatronsontheirarrivalattheBoulderRacecoursewillfindeveryconvenienceattheirdisposal,andshouldfind nodifficultyinhavingthetimeof theirlives.TheprocessionleavesAll Hallows'Churchat1p.m.'TheBoulderMines'Bandhas.beenengagedfor theoccasion.ThechildrenofAllHallows',St.Mary's,andtheChristian Brothers'College,togetherwiththe KalgoorlieandBoulderII:beraianSocietiesandtheIrishNationalForesters,arearrangingforabigmuster.

Agatheringmassofmaterialism,the;;roductofeducationwithoutreligion,is,unfortunately,bulkingovereuchinsociallifeto-day,andmany Catholics,puffedupwithhumanpride:ctrlthat-littlelearningwhichisa dangerousthing."jibatbeingsubjectotheauthorityoftheChurchinthe importantdomesticmatterofmarriage.Often,toooften,unhappily,the adviceofthepriestiswilfullyandpoepouslysetasideasimpertinent,and unionsaremadethatfrequentlyendattheCatholicpartyfallingawayfrom theFaith.Mixedmarriagesaremostlyresponsibleforthatleakagewhichis becomingaminterofanxietytotheC.tureh.Thechildrenofsuchunions invariablyarebroughtupwithoutinstructionintheFaith,andnursedand rearedinasecularawlmaterialisticenvironment,andultimatelyrenounce beliefinreligion.OldIriehandCatholicnamesare,unfortunately,becomingcommoninthemembershipofthevarioussects.'Theyarethose whoarethechildrenofwilfulparentswhorefusedtoopentheirearstothe wisdomoftheChurchspokenwithauthoritythestiff-neckedmemberswho stubbornlywenttheirownwayindisobedienceandpride.

MuchevilisbeingdonetotheFaithofouryoungpeoplebytheperniciousliteraturewhichCatholicparentsallowtobeintroducedintothe bornebytheirchildren.Theclassofnovelswrittenforpublicconsumption"theswiftsellers"ofthebigpublishinghouses-arenottheclassofreadingthatwillinspireouryouthwithhighidealsofFaithandMorals,since, invariably,theydealwithsexproblemsandsexweaknesses,thefrivolities ofthehourwhicharetaintedwiththeevilsoftheworld,theflesh,andthe devil.Ratherdotheypandertothetendenciesofsocietyanditshuman frailties.

Catholicbooksarenotnowfashionableinthehandsofourrisinggeneration.Itisnotinkeepingwithmodernnotionstobeintouchwithsuch prosyteachersofreligion.Thelatestbook,withaseductivetitle,writtentocapturethereaderandtomodernisehisthoughts,ismostlythe mostacceptablementalpabulumofamajorityofoaryoungCatholicreaders.

TheCatholicpaperisfrequentlyputasidetomakewayforthelatest thrashysecularconcoction,whichgivesprominencetosocialgossipandcurrenthappeningsspicedwiththehotandfilthystuffoftheDivorceCourt iindthesewageofthegutter.Theremustbealeakagewherethereisno highregardforcleanlinesswhichwillcomefromgood,clean,wholesome reading.

CotholicparentswhowillnotprovideCatholicreadingmatterfor theirchildren,whentheyhavethemeanstodoso,arehelpingthemonwards toindiffeenceintheirFaith.WherethereisnointerestinCatholicteachingtheleavenofunbeliefisworking,andthereisnotlikelytobefoundrespectfurtheChurch'sauthority.

InterviewedatAdelaide,Vire-AdmiralSirFrederickFieldsaidnice thingsofthiscountryasahospitableland,thebestintheworldforthe youngmanwhocouldnotgetintoaprofession.Totheobservingfriendly strangerwhocomestousfromabroad,ourgreatpossibilitiesaremade manifest.Unfortunately,tothenativeborn,theyarenotseenwiththe sameroseatevisioq.Ifthiscountryisthebestplaceintheworldfor theyoungmenofelsewherewithenergy,abilityandambitioninwhichto trytheirfortunes.itshouldbeatleastasgoodaland,sinceitistheir cradleland,totheyouthofthiscountry.Unfortunately,ourcompulsory andseculareducation,acostlyitemtothetaxpayer,hasnotinspiredthe youthofthiscountrywithafineambitiontoserveAustraliainthoseavenuesofenterprisewhichattracttheenergeticandambitiousyouthofother lands,whoareonthelookoutfornewandgreenpastures.Slowly,surely, theyarebeingpushedoutbythemoreenterprisingnewcorner,whoisconsciousofthesharpcompetitionprevailingintheoldworld.Allcan'the professionalmen.Theprofessionsarecongested,andtherearemoreap- plicantsforofficeworkthancanbesatisfied.Thetradesare,inasense, closedtomanyofouryouthwhoprefertobetradesmenbytherestrictions placeduponapprenticeship.Wehaveasaconsequencethestrangeamplaint,inayoungandprogressivecountrythattherearenoopeningsforour boos,whoaredesirousofadoptingatradeinpreferencetoarrofession. whilstatthesametimeskilledworkmenarebeingbroughtintothecountryfromtheoldlandundertheimmigrationscheme.Thereissomeblunderingeconomyatwork,surely,whet:suchaconditionexists.

TheNessesandBlatherems,whobreakfastwiththecables,andwhoare everonthewatch-outforRomannews,willbeagitatedbythealleged agreementbetweenthePopeandtheItalianGovernment,andthatHis HolinessnolongerconsidershimselfaprisonerintheVatican.Whatwill excitetheirsaffrontempersmostisthealsoallegednewsthettheLeanne ofNationswillguaranteetheindependenceofthePope.There'llbebother inthedugoutsofsectarianismshortly.andwemayexpectanotheroutcryagainstRomandomination.Onethingcertainisthattheworldwantstb" Pope.

St.Patrick'sDayisdifferentfromthepatron'daysofallothernations, tOrIrelandhasthedistinctivehonourofhavingthefestivaldayofa Saintasagaladayofhernationality.Hernationalityisasynonymof pureandstrongCatholicFaith.Itisonlyto-day,aftercenturiesofstruggle,thatsheisrisingfromtheashesofheroppressorsandtakingtheir placebyrightDivineamongstthenationsoftheworld.Thefacilityto exercisehernationalrightswerelongdeniedher-solongthatiftimecould killanation'ssparkoflife,herenemieswouldhavelongsincesecuredthole object.Buthernationalcharacteristics,hernationalcharms,hernational spirittheycouldneverannihilate.Andto-day,byvirtueofherspiritof charity,sheshakeswarmlythehandofherpenitentenemy,whoblush** beholdstheblood-stainswithwhichshebespatteredErin'sinnocentnatiosal robeappearinalltheircrimsonhorroruponherownwould-befairfinipire'sFlag.

ByvirtueoftheFaithwithwhichIreland'snationhoodisinextricably bound,thepastisforgiven,andsheemergesfairerthanevertoactasallinternationalleaveninanun-ChristianComonwealthofNations.Thereisno doubtthatthetenaciousadherencetoFaithwhichcharacterisedtheIrish peopleindaysofwar,vandalism,andpersecution,willbeallthemoreapparentandeffectivenowthatfountainisnolongerharnessedbythe machinationsofanenemy.Ifbeforeinthedarkperiodsofherunfortunatenationalhistoryshecouldspreadherinfluenceandherdeep rootedFaithinallclimes,whyshouldshenotnowbringtoheel,inthedays offreedom,thewhiningdaysofwar?Surelythegloryofherstruggleforthe DivinedepositofFaithcanneverfade.SheorherchildrencanneverforgetthattheflagofFaithwasneverwrestedfromthem.No,this"newlyrecognisednation"(thoughsheisolderthanthosewhoconcederecognitionto her)willeverhavebeforeitseyesthatstruggletrailingbacksomanycenturies;itwilleverseeinbroadperspectivethegloriousservicesshehas renderedtotheFaith.IrelandprizedtheCatholicreligionaboveall earthlypossessions;itmadeIaiththesymbolofitspatriotismandnationality;itperpetuatedandextended,throughsuccessiveages;thenameand memoryofSt.Patrickbyitsimmeasurableloveanddeathlessdevotion,it taughttheworldthelessonoffidelitytoFaith.Andallthisinspiteoftribulation.ThoughshewasFaith'smartyr,shewasnotconsumed.Though dispersedandexiledamongthenations,shelostnotthepowerofher weakness,butbecamemorepotentinherdispersionandoppressiontoeffect muchforthespreadofreligion.Robbedofherlands,ofhertreasures'of art,learningandreligionbyatyrannicalGovernment:hergrandchurches despoiled,hernobleinstitutionsoflearningandsanctityconfiscatedordestroyed,herworkofeducationthwarted,fetteredandobstructedinevery way,andthentauntedwithbeingignorantandpoor,sheemergesfromdie fraypurifiedandstrengthenedintheFaiththatthatvillianytriedtoeradicate.Mentionofharrowingatrocitiesshesufferedshouldnothemade whennowatlastenemiesfromtimeimmemorialhavebeenbeateninto admirersofthatlittleEmeraldGemoftheWesternSeas.Butwecanbe excused,forinIreland'scasethetearandthesmilewilleverhemingled. AppealtoFrance.

Inguardedrepliestothequestionof France'ssecurity,thePremiersaidhe wasprofoundlyconvincedthatthe mostredoubtablearmamentswould neverbesufficienttoguaranteethe securityofFrenchterritory.Hewish. edthatFrancewouldceasetoputits confidenceinmilitarypoweralone,and wouldrealisethemuchgreaterprotectionitcouldfindintheLeagueofNations.

Itwasevidenttosincerepeoplethat theentryofGermanyintotheLeague wasthebestguaranteeofsecurityfor hereasternfrontierthatFrancecould obtain.
