ThegreatestcentresofRussia'sreligiouslifeandreligiouslabour,and, perhaps,herreligiousthoughtaswell, werehithertohermonasteries.Atthe presenttimethesearedissolved.But, thougheconomicallymonasticlifemay existnomore,onecannotforamomentadmitthatmonasticism,inits spiritualaspects,isdeadinRussia. Thisissovastasubjectthatitisdifficulttodealwithitbriefly.
ThebigmonasteriesofRussia,as, forinstance,theKievLavra,theTroizko-Petcherskaya,andinnumerable othersinMoscowandelsewhere,have allbeen"nationalised."TheGovernmentpersecutedthemperhapsmore thanitdidthesecularclergy,probably becausethereligioushadastronger holdonthepeople.TheSovietsheld afairlycorrectestimateoftheimportanceofthe"monkishinfluence" uponthepeasants.Hencetheirpol- icywasoneofintermittentbutsyste-maticdestruction,andtheRussianreligiouswerehardlyevergiventheop- portunityto"adjust"themselvesto thedemandsofthe"ReformedRed Church."Theneophytesofthelatter "sere.bishopsexcepted,allseculars.TheRussianOrthodoxBishopsbelong- edlo-theirranktothereligious,or"black."clergy,and-hadtokeepcelibacy;inthistheydifferedfromthe seculars,orthe"whiteclergy,"who wereobligedtogetmarriedbefore theirordination.

Therewereothercases,alsonumerous,whenmonksmetwithsilentmartyrdom,andthesewerespeciallyfrequentduringtheyear1922,whenthe requisitionofsaints'relicsbeganand whenmonks,inmostcases,vehementlyprotestedagainsttheinevitablesacrilegeswhichaccompaniedtheseproceedings.Therewereagaincases,, andthesemostlyoccurredinPetrogradandMoscow,especiallyatthe Alexander-NevskyLavra,Petrograd, whenmonkssamehesitatinglytothe Catholicpriests,laidtheirdifficulties openandbeggedtobereceivedinto theCatholicChurch.Onemustnot expectthewholecontingentofthe RussianreligiousgoingovertoRome onthestrengthofthefewwhohave alreadydoneso.Butthesecasesare strikingallthesame,inthattheyare totallyunprecedented.Thereasoningofthesemonks,mostlyveryaged men,isverysimple.Oneofthem said:"OurLordsaid,thatthegatesof HellshallnotprevailagainstHis Church.Weseehowtheyhaveprevailedandareprevailingstillagainst ourChurch.lf'atHisChurchmust existsomewhere,fortheendofthe worldhasnotcomeyet.Wefeelsure somehowthatHisChurchisyours. Thesemonk-converts,whenreceived intotheChurch,bringwiththemmuch ofwhatshouldnotberejected.They mightbeofimmensevalue.inthefuturemissionarywork,since,themselves ofthepeople,theyknowthepeople andthelatterwouldtrustthemmore thananyoneelse.
Theindividualcasesofmonks'conversions,inspiteoftheirscantiness, countedheavily,sincethoseconverts werealmostthefirsttogooutand workamongtheCatholicsinRussia outsidethebigtowns.
Thegreatcentresofmonasticlifein Russia,especiallyintheNorth,were centresoflabour.mostlymanual.carriedonindeedonreligiouslinesand wrappedinanatmosphereofimplicit obedienceTheywerenotseatsof scholarlylearning.Soul-trainingwas
regardedonlyinsofarasitconcerned body-training.Russianmonksseem tohavecontinuallykepttheireyeson thewords"yourbodiesarethetemplesoftheLlolyGhost,"henceall theircloisteredlivesweredirectedto makethesetemplesholy,notsomuch throughcorporalmortifications,as throughincessant,useful,"God-pleasing"labour. Meditationandcontemplation,the highestgradesofmonasticlife,were onlyallowedtotheagedmonks,who hadbehindthemyearsandyearsof hardtoilwithinthemonasterywalls. Such"contemplatives"or,"schymnicks,"tousetheRussianword,existedineverymonastery,butallofthem werepasttheageofseventy.When sometimesmonks,whowerenotaged, beggedtheabbot'spermissionforretirementfromtheCommunitylife,as theywishedtoliveinseclusion,their lives,thoughsledinsolitude,would stillbeprimarilylivesoftoil. TherearenoseparatereligiousordersinEastern-Orthodoxmonasteries. Eachofthesehasarule,oftenvery rigid,andsometimesespeciallyadaptedforRussianusefromsomeEastern model.TheRussiansareabsolutely unacquaintedwith"mendicant"friars. Theirown"errant"monkswereoftentimesnottheidealspecimensoftheir ownmonasteries.ButthoughRussian monksmaybeignorantoftheFranciscanletter,theyhaveunconsciously graspeditsspirit,andthebarefeetof afriarwilltelloneloquenttaletoa Russianpeasant.whichhewilllovingly understand.Thatiswhereandwhy themissionarycedersmayprovetobe ofvitalimportanceinRussia. Thatiscertainlyasloganthatought toappealtoeverygoodAmerican,especiallytothosewhodonotknow whatitmeans.Andasamatterof fact,wefindtheFundamentalists. throughtheBishops,tryingtodictate totheotherswhattheymustholdin mattersofdoctrine.Wefindthe Modernistsproclaimingtheirfreedom, andtherightofeachonetofollowthe leadofhisreason,whateveranyman maycommandhimtobelieve.But thetootofthematteristhatthereis norealfundamentaldifferencebetween thetwoparties.Theystandoncommonground.Eachpartystartsfrom thesrrneprinciple,aprinciplethatnot onlydestroysthestandoftheother party,butisself-destructiveaswell. ItisthefundamentalprincipleofProtestantismitself.
Whatisthatprinciple?Ithasbeen 4-arionslydescribedasthe"rightof vrivatejudgment,""freeinterpreta- tionoftheBible.""freedomefconscience."Usingthisprinciplethefirst Protestantsthrewofftheauthorityof theChurchtowhichtheybelonged, hutretainedinasensetheauthority oftheBibleandofacreed.Thenew Protestants.usingthesameprinciple, havethrownovertheauthorityofthe Churchestowhichtheybelong,and thatoftheBibleandthecreedaswell.
earlydesireofbecomingapriesthad tohesacrificedtothedutyofhelping tosupporthisfamily,andhewasap- prenticedtoashoemaker.Acustom whichthenprevailedinGermanyand hassurvivedtoourowndays,obliged him,attheendoftwoyears'apprenticeshiptomoveaboutfromplaceto place,hiringhisservicestoctifferent employers,andthusenlarginghisexperienceofhistrade.Inthisway Kolpingbecameacquaintedwiththehardconditionsencounteredbyyoung working-menintheworkshopsand lodginghousesofstrangecities.The ambitionwhichheconceivedofimprovingtheseconditions,especiallyfor hisfellowCatholics,revivedinhim, morestronglythanever,hisoriginalaspirationtothepriesthood.After yearsof hardships,perseveringstudyamidmany privationsandillnesseshe wasatlast.ordainedin1845andsent ascuratetoElberfeld.Hereanumberofjourneymencarpenters,underthepatronageofthelocalclergy,had foundedachoralsociety,whichsoon grewintoaGuildof-YoungWorkingMen--Gesellenverein-withatwo-fold purpose:firsttoconsolidatetheCatholiclifeofitsmembers;andsecondto improvetheirworkmanship.Kolping, qualifiedtospeakonbothsubjects,fre- quentlyaddresseditsmeetings,and,on hiselectionaspresidentinx847,began tolaythedeepfoundationsofavery distinctiveorganisation.Withthe aimofcreatingaclassofefficientmaster-workmen,self-respectingandre- spected,hesethimselftounitethe journeymenwho,remotefromtheir homes,werelittlebetterthanvagrants inthegreatcentresofpopulation,and toinspirethemwithreligiousmotives fortrainingthemselvesintoaccom- plishedWorkmenandmoralcitizens.
