Historymustbetakeninabroad sense,andincludethebiographiesof modernChurchmenandCatholic statesmen.Howfrequentlydowe delightinreadingshortbiographical sketchesofgreatmenin"TheCatholic Press-andelsewhere,yethowmany teacherscollectthoseasreadingmatter fortheirclasses?Biographiesarethe greatmeansofbringinghometothe childrenthefactthatsomemenliving amidtheirownconditionshavepracticedsuchvirtuesintheirlives.They areproofswecanpointto,goalsto spuronourefforts.Biographiesare lessonsinbeingmen.WhatisShe goodofhero-worshipunlessyoumean toliveuptothatstandardyourself? Butifsuchanideahasneverbeenproposedtochildren:ifgreatmenare merelynamesanddatesandfacts,and theirpersonalitiessohigh-and-mighty astobeunapproachable,theyreally arenotmuchgood.
Undertheheading,"Instruction,comesafullerexplanationofessential things.Ouraimistovarytheprogrammeinthissectioneachyear,so astomilitateagainstmonotonyof everdoingthesamethings.We selectsometopicandmakeitthepinnacleofinterest,andendeavourto haveanewpeakorafreshaspectof thesamepeakforstudyeachyear. TherewassomeattemptatSocial Studythisyear,oneschooldoinga considerablecourseoflecturesbased onthe"RerumNovarium"ofLeo XHI.'Wedonotaimatadetailed studyofthegreatproblemsinsocial science.Ouraimisrathertogivethe seniorpupilsinourschoolsanindicationoftheattitudeoftheCatholic Churchtowardsthegreatindustrial andeconomicissuesoftheday.The coursecanbeeasilydonein-afew well-plannedlectures.Apersonalacquaintancewithsomeproblemswhich ourowncountryprovides,wouldbea trainingfortheirgrowingminds.In IrelandandEnglandsocialguildsare flourishing.Ishaveoftenthoughtof suggestingtotheSocietyofSt..VincentdePaultheadvisabilityofformingjuniorbranchesinourbigschools withasocialstudycircleattached. Canapeoplebemoralwithoutreligion?Thereisanoldproverb whichruns:"Ifyouplucktheflowerfromitsroots,theflowersoondies." MoralitymustrestontheonlysolidfoundationofReligion.Itisobvious consequentlythatyoucannothaveamoraleducationunlessitisareligious education.Wehavedirectedyourattentiontothestatesmanwhohasoc casionedanewbirthforhiscountry.Nowcomebacktothebirthofanother nation.GeorgeWashington,standingonthesodofanewly-bornland, andvisioningthe.futurethatawaitedit.declared:"Ofallthedispositions andhabitswhichleadtopoliticalprosperity,religionandmoralityareindispensablesupports.Letitbesimplysaid,whereisthesecurityforproperty, forreputation,forlife,ifthesenseofreligiousobligationdesertstheoaths whicharetheinstrumentsofinvestigationincourtsofjustice?Andletus withcautionindulgethesuppositionthatmoralitycanbemaintainedwithoutreligion."Hissuccessorshaveignoredhiswarning,,andwecanview theresult,?nthecrime-riddenAmericaofto-day.

Itisquitetruethatmorality,"moralpower,"derivesitsstayfromreligion,andthatitfindsapowerfulallyinthehome.Butifyouholdthe viewthatreligionandmoralityshouldbetaughtONLYintheChurchand home,youhavethewrongendofthestick.IntheCatholicview,thereis nosphereoflife,nohumanactivity,fromwhichAlmightyGodandHis Lawcanbesafelyexcluded.Leastofall,perhaps.canHebeexcluded fromtheschool,thatactivitysoprominentinthelivesofourchildren,upon whomrestallourhopesforthefuture.Andregardingsolelythepracticalaspectofthematter,wearejustifiedinasking:"Ifthechildisnot trainedinreligionandinmoralityatschool,wherewillbebetrained?"Half anhouronceortwiceaweek,underchurchlyauspices,isnotenough.Few parentstoday-haveeitherthetimeortheabilitytoimpartmuchmorethan thebarestelementsofreligioustraining.Theunfortunateprobabilityis thatifthechildisnottrainedinreligionandinmoralityatschool,he willreceivenoreligioustrainingwhateverworthyofthename.Whyreligionshouldbeincludedinanysufficientschemeofeducation,andhowit canbetaught,arequestionswhichtheCatholicChurch,throughherschools, hasansweredwithnotablesuccess.Theseschoolsalonemeetthestandards whicharenecessaryforthecreationofgoodAustraliancitizens.Theydo notconsiderthat"mereintelligenceisenough,"butstrivetoimparttoevery pupil"thatmoralpower"whichfindsitsmostlastingfotindationinthe truthsofsupernaturalreligion.
