NEW PRESBYTERY SET TO BOOST SPACE AND ACTIVITY FOR PERTH’S VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY

PERTH’S VIETNAMESE Catholic Community has this month welcomed the opening and blessing of a new presbytery and community centre in Westminster, which it hopes will boost cultural and faith activities by providing more space for the parish groups to meet.

Some 1,000 people attended a Thanksgiving Mass for the blessing and opening of the new presbytery on 5 June, which was principally celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, who also cut the official ribbon and blessed each room during a special service before the Mass.

young people wishing to attend language and faith classes.

The project was first proposed in 2010, when the committee saw that land adjacent to the original community centre could be used for a new presbytery.

Mr Le said the top part of the new building will provide living space for resident clergy, while the bottom part will be used for meeting areas for groups, including members of Perth’s Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement (VEYM).

“This will provide increased room for the younger generation to learn the language and about our faith,” he said.

In his homily for the occasion, Archbishop Costelloe reflected on the Gospel story of Jesus raising a young man to life, and how this, and other Gospel stories, showed His love for ordinary people, and the promise of Eternal Life.

NATSICC retreat in the heart of Australia touches Perth attendees

ARCHDIOCESE OF PERTH Auxiliar y Bishop, Don Sproxton, and Aboriginal Catholic Ministry staff have been inspired by their recent trip to the inaugural National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council (NATSICC) Spirituality and Formation Retreat in Alice Springs.

Supported by the Bishops Commission for Relations with Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, the retreat took place from 19 to 21 April and brought together about 60 people working in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic ministry from all over the country.

Bishop Sproxton said the retreat had been planned as an opportunity to reflect, share and learn from one another.

“Normally, our meetings are for business, but it had been felt by the NATSICC members that a retreat would be very valuable in building an important foundation of

trust and deeper respect as we listened to one another in a spirit of prayer,” he said.

“It turned out to be a moment of great grace and communion.”

He was one of a number of prelates in attendance, including Archbishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Christopher Prowse, and Bishop of Darwin, Eugene Hurley, while the presenters included theologian, Evelyn Parkin, and NATSICC chairperson, John Lochowiak.

Bishop Sproxton said one of the highlights of the retreat

was hearing the Dreamtime stories of the local Aboriginal people, which are inspired by the forms of the MacDonnell Ranges that run east and west of Alice Springs.

“Their stories of the Dreamtime are ways of explaining their origins and the respect for the world around them,” he said.

“We, the people who have come to Australia much later, have received a tradition that helps us to understand the way things are in the Book of Genesis, particularly the gradual alienation of human-

ity from God and the need for Christ to come to restore the relationship on our behalf.”

The retreat also featured Lectio Divina sessions to help attendees to pray with the Scriptures and sessions on symbols, initiation, sacrament and mission, as understood by the Church and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

TRAYNING PARISH COMMUNITY CELEBRATES 90TH ANNIVERSARY

THE WHEATBELT CHURCH of St Joseph in Trayning last month celebrated a significant milestone with a Mass that jointly recalled 90 years of history and commemorated the life of local girl, Sister Irene McCormack, who died in Peru in 1991.

The Mass on 22 May was celebrated by Parish Priest Father Richard Ye Myint and took place at St Joseph Church, Trayning, attended by some 70 people, including former and current parishioners and relatives of Sr McCormack.

St Joseph Church, along with Our Lady of the Assumption, Koorda and Our Lady Help of Christians, Mukinbudin, - is one of four churches grouped as part of the Lord of the Harvest, Bencubbin parish.

Parishioner Sandra Waters gave a speech during the Mass, outlining the history of the region, saying much had changed since the Trayning church was first established in 1926.

“Our church has seen priests and buildings come and go, including two schools, a convent and a presbytery,”

she said. “We have always been renowned for our hospitality and, when our presbytery was demolished, we set up a great area at the back of our church to facilitate our ministry, where we shared our week and lots of good food and great stories.”

She added that the parishioners’ welcoming approach had been aided by having clergy from around the world working in the community.

“We have welcomed 15 priests into our parish from 1975 until Fr Richard today,”

she said.

“We have had Spanish, Irish, Burmese, Vietnamese and Polish priests bringing the Sacraments to us.

“We are very fortunate to have such great relationships with our priests.”

Mrs Waters also explained the importance of Sr McCormack’s story.

“Her father was among the early pioneers of this district and one of the forefathers of the parish,” she said.

“Not only was she baptised here, but attended school here in her early years.

“I was informed that she always wanted to be a religious sister and, after finishing school and completing a gap year, she went to Sydney to do her training; then she came back to the West to teach.”

Sr McCormack’s death at the hands of Shining Path terrorists showed a great deal of bravery, which was remembered by those she had worked with in Peru, Mrs Waters said.

“Despite threats from the

rebels, she continued to teach and distribute aid to the people,” she said.

“She is regarded as a heroine by the village people - I have a picture of the tapestry made by the women of the village in her honour.”

A number of those at the Mass included people who had a longstanding connection to the parish, but who had moved away in more recent years.

This included Mrs Marie Mofflin, who had been married in the sacristy of St Joseph 68 years ago while a resident in Nungarin, plus members of the Mulcahy, Cosgrove, McCormack, Capp, Baxter, Barnes and Hulls families.

There was also a notable presence of fellow religious from the Sisters of St Joseph, including Srs Leonie Mayne, Marie Moriarty, Kathleen Dawe and Philiomena Kalmund.

2016 LIFELINK WINTER APPEAL:

Emmaus builds on inclusive culture

TWENTY YEARS after it was established as a place of accommodation and support for people who were homeless or suffering poor mental health, the Emmaus Community is still going strong, with a building project under way which is set to increase its living space.

Founder and director, Brother Alan Archer, - better known as Brother Al - said he hoped the new buildings would help extend and reshape the community, and make it a bigger presence in Queens Park.

“We’re building four houses which, when they’re finished, will be accommodating 50 community members,” he said.

“They should be finished at the end of September. So, the plan in the next two years is just to unite what we have, and just make this community flow, and flow onto others as well.”

When Br Al purchased the original Emmaus Community property in 1996, it came on the back of his experience working for a Crisis Care Unit in Bentley.

While there, he noticed that many people returned to the unit after their allotted eight weeks of emergency accommodation and care were up, making it clear that this amount of time was not enough for people to recover and rebuild their lives.

Motivated by this, Br Al decided to provide a place where people with mental

health issues could live comfortably and recover at their own pace, with the benefit of having others around them.

Initially, the Queens Park property housed only seven people, plus Br Al. But even then, the wider community was supportive and friendly, he said.

“Neighbours and locals are accepting of the community,” he said.

“That’s the one thing that we’re trying to get across, that Emmaus is an inclusive place, and the wider community has accepted it. They love visiting, and our parishioners are very good to us.”

The stories of how people come to Emmaus are varied, but all underscore the importance of being inclusive and not labelling people, Br Al said.

“There was a gentleman who’s been with us for 12 years and, when I first saw him, he was living in a garage and they were charging him almost all of his pension. He was in a terrible way physically, but beyond that you saw the soul, and this soul just shone.

“I didn’t have a room at that time but I put him in our van and took him to our art room - he’s been with us ever since.”

He added that the inclusive culture of Emmaus extended to its approach to faith, with a small chapel which people can use if they want to, and which is open to people of all religious backgrounds.

“When I started the chapel, I’ve never to this day asked someone to come to chapel, but always welcomed them if they want to come,” Br Al said.

“So, they see this love, and they want to know what this love is about, and it’s about Jesus – and Jesus’ message is about being inclusive.

“For people on the fringes, feeling included is what they need. With all large religions, we tend to get a bit exclusive but people like Pope Francis and Archbishop Tim and Emeritus Archbishop Barry – who says Mass here once a month – show us what being inclusive is about, and that’s the leadership that we need in the Church.”

Br Al said that, for many people at Emmaus, the chapel was a place of peace, which also reflected inclusivity through its design and services.

SEEK PEACE AND PURSUE IT

The word Pax, peace, is often used as a motto of Benedictine monasteries. Within the daily rhythm, quiet and prayer of New Norcia, we will explore what it means to seek peace and then what we must do to pursue it.

We will reflect on peace within our own hearts and peace with one another, those with whom we live and work. What, then, are the implications for a world that seems so devoid of peace?
