2015 LIFELINK CHRISTMAS APPEAL - Good Samaritan calls us to love the other in same way as we have been loved by God

By Jamie O’Brien ‘CHRISTMAS is a time to offer the gifts of hope, compassion and mercy to people in need’, was the message proclaimed at the launch of the 2015 Archbishop’s Christmas Appeal.

Some 150 priests and parish representatives from across the Archdiocese last week came together at St Mary’s Cathedral as part of the liturgical service and launch of the appeal, presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton.

Those present for the occasion were given the opportunity to listen to a number of speeches and readings - including the proclamation of a verse from The Church in the Modern World (Pontifical Council for Social Communications), a reading from St Luke’s Gospel about the Good Samaritan, and a video presentation of a General Audience with Pope Francis.

Marina Re, CEO of Identitywa, an agency organisation of LifeLink, spoke about the work of the disability care provider, telling the story of five-year-old Sadie and her family and how the support they have gained from Identitywa has changed their lives.

Respite, explained Ms Re recalling the words of Sadie’s mother Lynley - has been invaluable.

“While it is an emotional test for every family member, the rewards cannot be measured,”

Ms Re continued, in her own words.

“For Sadie, it has built her independence and resilience and is enabling her to socialise in ways that her mother says the family could never do.

“I know this because Lynley has told us the staff love telling her stories of what Sadie gets up to – apparently she’s a bit of a cheeky monkey!” Ms Re said.

Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton then went on to speak about the Gospel reading of the story of the Good Samaritan from St Luke - and the call we have received as Christians to love the other in the same way that we have been loved

by God. “The compassion of the Father for humanity urged Him to send His son to lift us up to new life,” said Bishop Don. “The Samaritan was moved to the same level of compassion, we are told by Jesus. In other words, he is moved to feel as God feels. The compassion stirred up within him was divine compassion.”

Bishop Don went on to explain that God’s love for humanity was able to be seen and felt.

LifeLink agencies collectively touch the lives of more than 31,000 people in need each year through the provision of accommodation,

food, clothing, financial assistance with electricity and gas accounts, and the protection of women and children escaping domestic violence and abuse.

In this year’s Christmas LifeLink Appeal, the Archbishop is setting a target of $700,000 so as to help fund agencies in being able to meet the needs of those who knock on the doors of Archdiocesan agencies.

The 2015 LifeLink Christmas Appeal will be officially launched in parishes on 14 and 15 November.

Spirit of service leads two schools to new heights, great ideas

By Jamie O’Brien THE OUTSTANDING support and positive participation in LifeLink Day has seen Our Lady’s Assumption Primary School Dianella and Trinity College East Perth being named as the recipients of the 2014 Archbishop’s Spirit Award.

Since LifeLink Day was first established in 1999, one school has traditionally been selected each year to receive a special acknowledgement and token of appreciation – namely the Archbishop’s Spirit Award.

The Archbishop’s Spirit Award is not awarded on the basis of how much money is raised but presented to the school that shows outstanding support for, and positive participation in, LifeLink Day – this year held on Wednesday, 3 June.

It is awarded to the school which comprehensively demonstrates active support for the Archbishop’s LifeLink Day initiative, embraces the goals of LifeLink Day, that is, to not only learn about the Church’s response to people in need within the Archdiocese but to also undertake some form of fundraising in support of the social service agencies funded through LifeLink; commits to educating students on their responsibility to care for those

less fortunate in the community and promotes an ethos of caring and compassion to students, teachers, parents and the wider community - that we all have a responsibility to show love and compassion, not just on LifeLink Day but every day.

In congratulating Our Lady’s Assumption Dianella, Archbishop Costelloe said the school should take great pride in the knowledge the fundraising concept has been transformed into the ‘Link up on LifeLink Day’ which was launched in primary schools across the Archdiocese this year. Primary School Principal David Barras said the fundraising idea was developed by Mini-Vinnies Co-ordinator Jenni Brown with the idea for students to create a physical paper link, with the intention of providing students with a tangible representation of the LifeLink initiative.

“We felt it was important for the students to understand that their fundraising efforts are part of a much broader contribution to support the poor and marginalised in our community,” Mr Barras said.

“Our Lady’s Assumption community has really

embraced the appeal and it has become a key activity on our annual community service calendar,” he said.

“As Principal, I am absolutely delighted that our school has been recognised by the Archbishop.

“We want all our students to see the value in supporting those less fortunate in our community and I believe the Spirit Award promotes an important lesson - that your contribution doesn’t have to be the biggest to make a difference, you just need to contribute.”

Blessing of the Fleet celebrates faith and culture at the heart of Fremantle

The Blessing of the Fleet once again succeeded in bringing people of diverse cultural backgrounds together in celebration of faith, fishing traditions and the wider Fremantle community.

Beginning with a morning Mass celebrated by Archbishop Emeritus Barry Hickey under the majestic arches of St Patrick’s Basilica, the event continued with a procession of thousands down to Fremantle’s Fishing Boat Harbour.

Groups of men carried two Madonna statues on their shoulders, the Madonna dei Martiri (Our Lady of Martyrs) and Madonna di Capo D’Orlando, before placing the statues on two beautifully adorned boats.

Archbishop Emeritus Hickey then cast his blessing over the fleet, asking the Virgin Mary for a bountiful season and to ensure the safety of fisherman at sea.

The procession made its way back to St Patrick’s Basilica, with a brief stopover at the Esplanade for fireworks, while preparations were made for the breathtaking grand fireworks display that sealed an unforgettable day of colour and pageantry at 8pm.

Now in its 67th year, this festa (feast) was introduced to Fremantle by Italian migrant fishermen from the town of Molfetta (southern Italian region of Puglia) in 1948 to venerate their patron saint, the Madonna dei Martiri.

The Molfettesi were then joined by their Sicilian neighbours from the seaside town of Capo d’Orlando, who introduced their own Madonna to the procession.

As one of the biggest and most popular of Italian feasts in Western Australia, the event

is symbolic of the loyalties of Italian migrants in Fremantle, as well as Portuguese and Croatian fishermen affiliated with Fremantle’s fishing industry.

The event has built a reputation as being a beautiful opportunity for migrants to remember and pay tribute to their country of origin, while simultaneously celebrating their new home of Fremantle.

In an interview with The Sunday Times Social Reporter, Daniele Foti-Cuzzola, the Mayor of Fremantle, Brad Pettit, stated that the Blessing of the Fleet is an event of great importance to Fremantle as “it captures in many ways the heart of Fremantle and its cultural history”.

“It’s been going now for over 65 years - when Sicilians came to Fremantle and brought that rich tradition with them. It’s fantastic to see that it goes on from year to year,” he said.

Current Founding President of the Blessing of the fleet, John Minutillo, also expressed his

admiration and pride at seeing this event celebrated throughout the decades.

The planning of the entire day, he added, did come with a significant effort from those in charge of organisation.

“We would have a meeting once a month and then every fortnight as the event date drew closer. Unfortunately, it is very expensive to put on an event on such a scale: for this, we do a lot of fundraising.

“We have family nights at the Fremantle Italian Club and also go around houses collecting money; people give us a donation and we give them tickets to a variety night concert where there are local singers such as Tony Pantano.

“The night before the event, we usually have The Blessing of the Fleet Ball which attracts a lot of the younger people.

We have had more than 500 attendees some years,” he said.

Slower version of the beautiful game strides into Perth

By Marco Ceccarelli AS BEDFORD Parish Priest Fr Dat Vuong was watching the FIFA World Cup being played in Brazil last year, he noticed the promotion of a slightly different version of soccer that caught his eye – Walking Soccer.

The idea of a soccer game played by people walking around kicking a ball immediately appealed to Fr Dat, who after years of playing for parishes across the Archdiocese had suffered a number of injuries to his feet, ankles and knees.

As a version of soccer very similar to the original, Walking Soccer introduces one fundamental rule: any player caught running concedes a free kick to the opposition.

The game is safe, enjoyable and especially suited for those recovering from injury, or who simply want to return to

the game they used to play as youngsters.

“The concept of walking soccer gave me great comfort and confidence to better manage my injuries without giving up on a sport that I love,” said Fr Dat. “I introduced the walking soccer games with a few priests during a Clergy Retreat in late August and they enjoyed it very much,” he said.

Walking Soccer is played on a small, five-to-a-side pitch with slightly modified rules designed to avoid injury.

According to www.sportscentral.org.au, the game is both a great way of being active and increases cardiovascular fitness without putting stress on the body.

Other physical and mental health benefits include lower heart rate and blood pressure, better oxygen absorption, less

joint related injuries, team work simulation, higher levels of psychological reward and satisfaction and lower levels of stress.

The sport has grown quickly in popularity across the United Kingdom and in Geelong, Victoria, with Fr Dat being the first person to introduce Walking Soccer to Western Australia - an achievement he is extremely proud of and one that he hopes will catch on in Perth.

“As Parish Priest of St Peter the Apostle Parish in Bedford, I wanted to officially start Walking Soccer here purely on the basis of promoting a low risk form of soccer for all to enjoy.

“I believe that if most of us walk 80 per cent of our whole life, then Walking Soccer will be a very attractive avenue for those who thought that playing soccer was impossible.”

The trend is gradually catching on as parishioners and finance and social committees from the Archdiocese have expressed interested in supporting the initiative.

Walking Soccer has also attracted people from different faith backgrounds who enjoy the fellowship and are keen on sharing something in a safe and healthy way.

As he left the soccer pitch feeling rejuvenated from an hour of Walking Soccer, Fr Dat had some final words for anyone looking at ways to stay fit without putting their body through too much physical strain: “if you can walk and know how to laugh then you have all the skills you need.

There’s no excuse for not getting involved!”

Copies can be purchased from St Pauls Publications, Strathfield NSW and Catholic retailers. Digital versions have been integrated into a CD-Rom Resource ‘Labora Worship’ from Liturgy Brisbane and the website www. liturgyhelp.com maintained by Creative Ministry Resources, Hobart. Liturgical and pastoral ministers, religious education teachers, catechists and couples preparing for marriage are encouraged to utilise liturgical formation resources about the revised orders such as: When We Marry.
