New school opens in Maddington STUDENTS, family, staff and special guests of the newly opened St Francis’ School Maddington have been celebrating its success since classes began in March this year.

The school is the latest Catholic Education Western Australia CARE (Curriculum and Re-engagement) educational facility and combines a variety of practical learning areas. Its focus on fundamental literacy and numeracy skills aims to re-engage with teenagers who have not found mainstream schooling effective.

Plight of asylum seekers takes centre stage at Requiem

By Jamie O’Brien THE MUSICAL TALENT of Welsh composer Karl Jenkins took on a new theme in memory of refugees and asylum seekers who have lost their lives in the search for freedom as part of a concert at St Mary’s Cathedral last Sunday, 11 October.

Conducted by local musician Jangoo Chapkhana, the choir and orchestra gave a stellar performance made all the more powerful by the mindset of the 650-strong audience. Key organiser Anne Stephens said she was extremely pleased with the turn-out, and hopes the occasion gave those who attended the opportunity to reflect on the call to action – including that of Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Pope Francis.

The aim of the concert was to raise funds for locally based activities of MercyCare and The Humanitarian Group, a legal service that provides assistance to asylum seekers who are having their protection claims processed in Western Australia.

Mrs Stephens went on to explain that development of the concert came about, in large part, as a natural response to her work as a school psychologist working with refugees and asylum seekers, having been deeply moved by their situations.

“It was also a consciousness–raising event to highlight the need to respond with compassion to the needs of those who seek asylum,” Mrs Stephens said.

Perth teens gather in Brisbane to ‘Ignite’ faith BRISBANE Archbishop Mark Coleridge described the recent Ignite Youth Conference as a wonderful gathering of more than 1,300 of the Church’s brightest young faces.

The conference, which was held in September in Brisbane, was bolstered by an enthusiastic group of teenagers and young adults from the Perth Archdiocese.

The four-day annual conference is known around Australia as being a vibrant and energetic gathering of young people, youth ministry leaders, clergy and religious.

McGinniss described the vast range of faith-themed encouragement offered at the Ignite Conference.

“It is wonderful to see 14-year-old skateboarders sitting next to religious sisters, and young people walking from a rock climbing wall to

a time of adoration with 1,300 others,” Mr McGinniss said.

“In-depth theology workshops were followed by music workshops, as well as sessions with Bishops and teenage missionaries.

Mr McGinniss went on to explain some delegates

attended on their own, while others attended with a group of several hundred from neighbouring dioceses.

“The diversity was truly amazing, but the unity was even more impressive,” he said.

A branch of Ignite Youth was established in Perth early this year, using local people and resources, in partnership with Catholic Youth Ministry.

Youth strengthened by CYM camp, event grows in numbers

By Josh Low ‘STAND FIRM in your faith, be courageous, be strong’ from St Paul’s letter to the Corinthians was the theme for the annual Stronger Teens Camp co-ordinated by Perth’s Catholic Youth Ministry held earlier this month.

Held at Fairbridge Village in Pinjarra, the event has steadily been growing in numbers every year, and was this year attended by more than 60 youth, CYM staff and a number of youth leaders from across the Archdiocese.

The weekend included talks from youth leaders from around the Archdiocese of Perth that covered topics on faith, facing insecurities to feel secure through Jesus and learning to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit.

by CYM Chaplain Father Brennan Sia, who spoke to a demonstration of mixing different liquids to create a chemical reaction as a symbolic representation of reconciliation and a reflection on sin and the healing power of God’s grace.

“It was really inspiring,

and taught us many things about God that we may not have known,” said camp participant Lydia, from Bateman Parish.

Fellow Bateman parishioner Brian said that, for him, the camp was a great success.

“My faith was definitely strengthened through the inspirational speakers we

had, with meeting other teens adding to the experience and making it a whole lot better,” he said.

Reconciliation was also available during the day on Saturday, with four priests, including Fr Sia, on hand to provide the sacrament to leaders and participants alike, with the evening also including Eucharistic adoration.

St Emilie’s Canning Vale Parish youth leader Matt Woodford, who gave a talk and led a Discipleship group for the weekend, says he was impressed with the response from those who attended and their enthusiasm.

“It was amazing to see everyone get really involved and make the most of this experience,” he said.

St Elizabeth’s Catholic Primary School in Hocking celebrates its official opening ST ELIZABETH’S Catholic Primary School in Hocking has last month celebrated its official opening, with students performing an impressive repertoire of songs for guests.

Foundation Principal Carmel O’Shaughnessy said watching the new students sing at the opening event was an inspirational moment.

The school was blessed and dedicated by St Anthony’s Wanneroo Parish priest Fr John Daly, together with Catholic Education WA Executive Director Dr Tim McDonald, who officially opened the facility.

Guests included Luke Simpkins MP, Member for Cowan representing the Australian Government; WA State Education Minister Peter Collier; Shadow Education Minister Sue Ellery; Wanneroo Mayor

Tracey Roberts; principals representing primary and secondary Catholic, Independent and Department of Education schools; architect Peter Quinn; owner of building contractor DBM Contractors Howard Marson; as well as numerous families

St Elizabeth’s Catholic Primary is looking forward to developing a relationship with the wider community and friends of the school, who shared morning tea and toured the facilities.

Kindergarten classes first began at the school in July 2014, with Pre-Primary students joining this year.

Mrs O’Shaug hnessy went on to explain that St Elizabeth’s will expand to become a Kindergarten to Year 6 school in the coming years, providing quality Catholic education for families in the growing Hocking community and surrounding areas.

Mrs O’Shaughnessy added she is very honoured to be a part of the new school.

“The school is experiencing a growing phase and we are looking forward to developing a relationship with the wider community,” she said.

“It is a real blessing to be witness to the school going from strength to strength.”

A BRAND-NEW Vinnies shop has opened in Mt Hawthorn and Vinnies is looking for volunteers willing to help out.

Vi n n i e s’ Retail Operations Manager Tim Lee said they were excited to have the new shop open in the area at an easy-to-find location on Scarborough Beach Road. “We recognised a need in the community and are pleased that we can provide a great op shopping experience for people,” Mr Lee said. “The Mt Hawthorn shop was newly fitted-out and has a very clean and modern look which I think people will enjoy.

“Vinnies’ shops provide great quality secondhand items at a reasonable price and we are confident that the Mt Hawthorn community will get behind us and support the new shop.

“We’re looking for volunteers to work at the front counter, ringing up sales through the register and generally helping out with customer service,” Mr Lee said. “Our volunteers always have a great time and enjoy the opportunity to give back to the community by giving some of their time.

“We are also keen to receive donations from the public and will readily accept secondhand clothing and household items that are still in good, useable condition,” Mr Lee said.

GENERAL CENTRE FOR LITURGY ADVENT PROGRAM The 2015 Advent Program for the Archdiocese of Perth will be released in September 2015.
