YOUNG SALESIANS ENJOY RECORD

NUMBERS AT THIS YEAR’S SUMMER CAMP

The WA Young Salesians Summer Camp in Dwellingup brought together campers and organisers for a week of fun outdoor activities and reflection.

MORE THAN 100 young people descended on Nanga Bush Camp in Dwellingup recently for a week of sport, outdoor activities, reflection and Mass, as part of the WA Young Salesians’ Summer Camp.

The event – held from Monday, 9 January to Friday, 13 January – drew record numbers, with 98 campers and 22 leaders in attendance, a marked improvement on previous years, according to Camp Coordinator Graham Maher.

“This was our 27th year as a camp, and it was the largest single camp in terms of numbers in that time,” he said.

“We went as low as 15 campers four or five years ago, so bouncing back has been a great milestone for us. All the leaders are very

enthused about seeing the numbers increase.”

An important focal point during the week was the celebration of Mass on Monday and Thursday, with Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB officiating for the second occasion.

“There was no specific theme for the camp this year, but our Masses had themes: on Monday, it was ‘Being a neighbour to one another’,

where the Mass included the Good Samaritan reading,” Mr Maher said.

“On Thursday, Mass focused on the idea, ‘I will take care of you’, indicating that God will always be there for you, no matter what else is going on in your life.

“Having the Archbishop there to celebrate Mass provides a kind of validity to what we’re doing over the week.”

The WA Young Salesians – and their summer camps – hold a particular importance for Archbishop Costelloe, as they are connected to the Salesian order of which he is a member.

The Salesian Order was founded in the mid-19th century by Don Bosco, an Italian priest whose teachings and works focused on helping young people and bringing God into their lives.

Mr Maher said his own experience as an attendee of the camps showed him the profound effect it could have on young people over the week.

“I attended for the first time when I was 17 years old - one of the kids from my parish wanted to go but their parents didn’t want them to attend alone, so I decided to go too,” he said.

Holy Cross Parish honours priests and community at

HAMILTON HILL’S Holy Cross Parish recently celebrated its 50 year anniversary with a morning Mass and the arrival of a new tabernacle and honour board, recognising the many priests who have served there over the years.

The Mass – which was held on 4 December, 2016 – was celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB and co-celebrated by Parish Priest Father Nicholas Nweke, Fr Emmanuel-tv Dimobi and Fr Greg Donovan, supported by acolytes John Williams and Des Cox. The Archbishop blessed the tabernacle and honour board before a congregation of more than 150 people, including parishioners past and present.

Later, parishioners and their families gathered at the West Australian Portuguese Club in Beaconsfield for a ticketed lunch to celebrate the occasion.

Holy Cross Church Hamilton Hill Parish was dedicated as a church in 1966, but had been previously known as Holy Cross Hall, built 10 years earlier by Fr Mirko Maslovar, who served as Parish Priest in Spearwood from 1957 to 1965.

The following year, Holy Cross Hall was converted into a church, dedicated by Bishop Miles McKeon and opened with Fr Maslovar as Parish Priest.

Parish Council Treasurer Bernadette Pinto said the anniversary had been a great opportunity to bring together members of the parish community and to honour those who had been associated with it in the past.

at a Mass,” she said. “And the honour board, which lists all the parish priests who have served at Holy Cross Church Hamilton Hill Parish since 1966, was an important step in recognising them.”

Congregants at the Mass received a special Mass booklet which outlined the parish history and included photos of its celebrations and feast days.

As a memorial of the event, those who attended also received a prayer card with a picture of the relic of the True Cross which is

enshrined in the church.

Reflecting on the celebrations and feast days, Ms Pinto said the parish had long been a centre for Portuguese culture and religious celebrations, including Pentecost.

“Holy Cross Church H a m i lton H i l l Pa r i sh has always had a strong connection to the Portuguese community and parishioners of that background have their own feast days throughout the year,” she said. The parish also had a Portuguese chaplain, Fr Julian Carasco, now deceased, who served at

Holy Cross Church from 1991 to 2013. The Parish Council did some fundraising by approaching state and federal members for Fremantle, the Fremantle Dockers and local businesses, while the tabernacle was donated by a Portuguese Association.

by Portuguese associations within the parish and Fr Nweke donated a framed ‘Divine Mercy’ picture.

TAKING THE GOOD WITH THE BAD,

KEY TO A HAPPY MARRIAGE TAKING THE GOOD WITH THE BAD and a commitment to staying in love are the keys to a successful marriage, according to Mercy Place Mont Clare (Claremont) residents Katherine and James McMahon, who recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Mr And Mrs McMahon, who are both aged in their nineties, were thrilled to receive letters from the Queen, the Prime Minister and a host of Western Australian politicians on the occasion.

The couple hail from very different parts of the world: Mr McMahon was born in Mount Gambier, South Australia in 1924, and Mrs McMahon entered the world in Calcutta during the time of the British Raj in 1920, with her family moving to Western Australia eight years later.

After getting married on 28 December, 1946 at St Mary’s Cathedral - where they first met - the couple ran a dairy farm in Nannup for close to 15 years, after which they moved into fine wool production.

At the same time Mrs McMahon worked as matron at Nannup District Hospital for close to two decades.

The couple, who live together at Mercy Place Mont Clare, celebrated their milestone with a party for friends and family, as well as Mercy Health staff.

“We courted for many years before getting married as we were only able to see each other when I was on leave from the services,” Mr McMahon said.

Family had been a great source of joy for both of them, Mrs McMahon added.

“We have been very fortunate in our lives, and were blessed to have six happy and healthy children: three boys and three girls,” she said.

“Today we have 11 grandchildren and six great grandchildren who we are also very proud of.”

Mercy Place Mont Clare Service Manager Janelle McFarlane said the entire Mercy Health team were keen to congratulate the couple on their special milestone anniversary.

Helpfulness had no boundaries: FAT H ER M I C H A EL J O H N B R OW N O F M

A gentle and joyful man whose helpfulness knew no bounds, Father Michael John Brown OFM passed away on 31 December, 2016 at the age of 94.

In the 67th year of his religious profession and the 61st year of his priestly ordination, Fr Brown ministered across Australia as a Parish Priest and Spiritual Director to many in the Archdiocese of Perth.

Below, Neil Brown shares treasured memories of his older brother with The eRecord journalist Rachel Curry. This article also includes excerpts of the eulogy from fellow Franciscan Friar and friend, Fr Bob Matthews OFM. MICHAEL JOHN BROWN was born on 12 July, 1922 in the wheatbelt town of Wyalkatchem, about 200km north-east of Perth, to James and Mary Anne Brown.

One of seven children, Fr Brown moved to Perth with

his family as a boy and gained his education at St Mary’s Convent School in Maylands and Christian Brothers High School in Highgate.

His younger brother Neil recalled that Fr Brown felt called to be a priest at an early age.

“It was always in his mind from when he was at school.

Mum encouraged it, because she was a fairly religious person, but none of the other children wanted to be religious,” Neil said.

When he was in his teens, Fr Brown spent a year with the Redemptorists in Galong, New South Wales, but was sent away with advice to seek another career.

Luckily for the countless people he would go on to help as a priest, Fr Brown did not give up hopes of a religious vocation.

However, he would first spend five years in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II, before returning to his education to gain his Leaving Certificate.

Pictured as a young priest in 1961 with one of his cousins, Father Michael Brown is remembered as a gentle and joyful man whose helpfulness knew no bounds.

Father Michael John Brown OFM passed away on 31 December, 2016 at the age of 94, in the 67th year of his religious profession and the 61st year of his priestly ordination.

It was while studying at CBC Leederville that Fr Brown met a Franciscan Friar – who was visiting the college on a recruitment drive – and was invited to become a novice in Box Hill, Victoria, which he did in 1948.

“People have said it was a late vocation, but it was really a deferred vocation,” Neil explained.

“He was refused at Galong and then interrupted by the war. He always said it was what he wanted to do; he never had any regrets.”

Fellow Franciscan and friend, Fr Bob Matthews, said in his eulogy that Fr Brown took to the task of his religious studies seriously, though he was not a brilliant academic.

Sport, however, was a different matter.

“He was a good batsman on the cricket field, not easy for a bowler to remove from the crease; he was also a reasonably good footballer,” Fr Matthews said.
