Youth called to find real happiness REAL HAPPINESS lies in a deep relationship with God and not through material possessions, money or power, said Ryan Shelton, keynote speaker at the recent Veritas Youth Festival.

The inaugural Veritas Youth Festival was held over the weekend of 10 to 12 July 2015 as an initiative of the Catholic Youth Network, which is a collection of youth agencies, communities and movements from across the Archdiocese.

The weekend theme focused on the World Youth Day 2015 message from the Gospel of Matthew and as determined

by Pope Francis, ‘Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God’ (Matt 5:8).

Mr Shelton, Religious Education Co-Ordinator at St Joseph’s School, Northam and a member of the Ignite Youth team, spoke to more than 400 youth on the theme of Blessed, the first part of the theme for the Festival.

Mr Shelton also spoke about his own pursuit of happiness and the need to focus on having a complete and intimate relationship with God, which will achieve true eternal happiness.

At the conclusion of his presentation, Mr Shelton encouraged the youth present to come forward and place a stone in a bowl of water, as a symbolic gesture of ‘sinking into their relationship with God’ rather than ‘skimming along the surface’.

Caritas and CYM to run Perth City to Surf for the marginalised

The Perth Office of Caritas Australia and Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM) are jumping at the chance to train together in solidarity as they look to raise funds for a special cause. The team of seven will next month run the 12km Perth City to Surf, with the money raised going towards Caritas projects that work to end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. UNDA remembers the life of Marcus Collins THE UNIVERSITY of Notre Dame Australia has this week remembered the outstanding contribution of its visionary architect and long-time friend, Marcus Collins, who passed away peacefully on Monday, 20 July 2015 after a long battle with cancer.

Since 1993, Mr Collins and his firm have been the architects for all buildings on the University’s Fremantle and Broome Campuses, and for the original design work on the Sydney Campus.

Together with Dean Fehlberg as his architectural partner, Bill Fairweather as builder, Dr Peter Tannock as Vice Chancellor and Angela Chaney as designer, Mr Collins was responsible for the creation of a superb 2 | EDITION #41 | 24 JULY 2015

Following his mantra of “touch the buildings lightly – if it’s not broken, don’t fix it”, Mr Collins and his team are

credited with restoring and transforming former shipping agencies and storage warehouses in Fremantle’s West End into beautiful and functional buildings for Notre Dame and the local community. Today, more than 11,000 Notre Dame students study and socialise in these preserved buildings of historical significance.

Mr Collins’ vision was also behind the design of new buildings on each of Notre Dame’s three Campuses: the Broome Library; the Health Sciences Research and Education building and the Tannock Hall of Education in Fremantle; and the School of Medicine building in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Mr Collins also developed a

Notre Dame “look and ambience” to the interior design of the buildings. This is reflected in the brick-red carpet with black cross motifs, jarrah timber for loose furniture, partitioning, dark grey metalwork and cream-coloured walls present in all Notre Dame buildings.

For this enormous contribution to the University, Mr Collins was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by Notre Dame in 2008.

Catholic Outreach programs ready to expand

LifeLink is the overarching organisation that provides ongoing funding support for agencies that deliver professional services and caring support to thousands of people in need throughout Western Australia each year.

This week, eRecord journalist Marco Ceccarelli spoke with Director of Catholic Outreach, Peter Mc Minn, and Outreach Officer, Betty Thompson, about the implementation and promotion of parish-based pastoral care programs throughout the Archdiocese of Perth.

When, in 1998, he was asked whether he had ever thought of taking on the job as Executive Officer at Catholic Outreach, Peter Mc Minn simply answered: “You must be joking, I am an accountant, not a social worker!”

Seventeen years later, Mr Mc Minn is still at the helm of an agency that runs quality pastoral care programs across 25 parishes in the Archdiocese of Perth.

Mr Mc Minn’s statements on the importance of volunteer work explain why Catholic Outreach is needed as much in society today as it was 25 years ago.

Catholic Outreach allows volunteers to feel secure because they’re part of a well-run agency. If you have a wellstructured program, people will want to come back,” Mr Mc Minn said.

“People will often want to reach out to those in need ... What we offer is a structure in which they can do this.”

“Although the demographics and economy have significantly changed in Perth since the program was first set up in the early 1990s, not everyone is affluent and doing well.

“There are a lot of people still in need and we have many of the agencies within the Archdiocese reporting more people needing help.

“People will often want to reach out to those in need within their community.

What we offer is a structure in which people can do this.

Set up in 1990 to assist parishioners in carrying out charitable endeavours, Catholic Outreach Care Programs offer short-term emergency care and are restricted to non-professional tasks such as visiting, transport, emergency meals, home help and more.

With 120 local co-ordinators and hundreds of volunteers in service, each parish running a Catholic Outreach Program benefits from approximately half a dozen

co-ordinators who, in turn, assess the jobs required and instruct the volunteers.

Volunteers have the flexibility of offering their services according to their schedules and capabilities, with the option of giving more or less at any time they choose to do so.

Catholic Outreach also facilitates interaction with other professional services provided by the Archdiocese and, if needed, will correspond with government or other services to ensure that people receive the appropriate care they need.

Catholic Outreach’s vision for the future is to see parishes understand what pastoral programs are as well as inform people about the services that Catholic Outreach can offer.

Archbishop Costelloe to celebrate Annual Marriage Day Mass MARRIED COUPLES across the Archdiocese will next month have a special opportunity to have their marriage vows blessed and renewed

by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe at the Annual Archdiocesan Marriage Day Mass.

The annual Marriage Day Mass will be celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral on 11 August at 7pm. Couples celebrating a significant anniversary this year, specifically 25, 30, 40, 50, 60 or 70 years, will also receive a certificate from the bishops to commemorate the special milestone in their marriage.

Director of Catholic Marriage and Fertility Services, Derek Boylen, said 2015 will be the eleventh year the event has been held and gives married couples the chance to look back at the work God has done for them.

“In front of all the challenges facing a Christian marriage today, it is important we make time to remember the love and unity that Christ has allowed us to experience,” Mr Boylen said.

“As married couples, too often we go through life, day after day, sometimes without a chance to reflect on how, why and where the Holy Spirit is guiding us, showing us what it really means to love – like Christ did – and how, as Christians, we, in turn, can pass on the gift of faith to our children and those around us through this love,” he said.
