a word from our archbishop Dear Angels, United as one family of God, we live with the clear mission to rediscover and make fruitful the mercy of Jesus Christ. Thank you for accepting His invitation to follow His compassionate example asking us to offer love without measure. This Donor Honor Roll is an opportunity to honor you for your support of the Archdiocese of Miami this past year and to show you that everything is possible for one who believes. Thank you all for your generosity and believing in the works of the church and the difference it makes in the lives of our brothers and sisters in need.

Your support bears witness to the very essence of what it means to be Catholic. We are called upon by God to be good stewards of the gifts He has given us by placing those gifts at His service. Because of Angels like you, the Archdiocese continues to help those in need through the many ministries and programs supported by the ABCD. The need within the Catholic community is great, and when we unite as one Church and one Family of God, we can make a difference in the lives of everyone – not because they are Catholic but because We Are Catholic.

As a Catholic community in South Florida, we continue to build and sustain the Church and its parishes, schools and programs. The good works of the church, made possible through your generosity, are a testimony to our faith, a faith that is very much alive and is a part of each one of us.

This year, as we reflect on all that we have accomplished as a Catholic community, I must pause to say thank you. Thank you for considering the church when sharing your blessings and all of the sacrifices that were made by you to make the good work of our church possible.

Changing lives • A single mother with two autistic children who works two part-time jobs.

• A father who contracted COVID-19 in June and has been in the hospital on a ventilator for the past six months, with mounting medical bills and a family to feed.

• A Hollywood family with six children in the household who moved to South Florida from the Bahamas after 2019's Hurricane Dorian destroyed their home. After settling in and finding work, the father lost his job due to the pandemic.

A parishioner of St. Mark in Southwest Ranches, 61, received aid through the emergency fund to pay medical bills. Her family’s business was forced to shut down due to the pandemic.

Romero and her husband of 32 years used their entire savings to keep the business going and pay the staff.

They lost their home and had to move in with one of their children.

“We have received punches from the left and from the right,” she said. “My insurance didn’t pay for all my medical bills. I am beyond grateful for the help that the archdiocese gave me. I didn’t know what I was going to do."

Changing lives A single mother of three children, ages 8, 13 and 16, received assistance after losing her job due to the pandemic. She received emergency relief from the archdiocese two months ago after losing her cleaning job due to the pandemic.

“The archdiocese helped me with three months' rent,” said the

mother, a parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen in Sunny Isles Beach. A local food program helps her with food while she continues to look for work. “It has been very difficult for me. I am thankful for the assistance I have received. I have a lot of angels,” she said. “I am thankful to God.”

A family of four from St. Ambrose parish received aid during their time in need. The Father, 45, lost his job and couldn’t afford the rent or to put food on the table for his wife of 15 years and two children, ages 2 and 7.

The father began working for Uber and Lyft days and nights, making next to nothing and in fear that he might get the virus or bring it home to his wife and children. “My family is the most important thing to me,” he said. “I want to protect them.”

The St. Ambrose community helped the family with food while the archdiocese was able to help them with rent assistance while they worked to get back on their feet.

“I live in a very hard situation,” he said. “In Brazil, I have my family. Here I have no one. My greatest fear is to be on the streets with my family.”

I will continue to hope and pray for a job, because God is on my side,” he said. He has applied for his dream job with a charter airplane company. A graduate of Broward College, he is positive about landing the opportunity and picking up the pieces for a brighter future in 2021.

“I don’t have the words to thank the archdiocese for the help,” he said, pausing to hold back emotions. “I only have tears.”

Thanks to your generosity, the Archdiocese of Miami continues to build and sustain the Catholic community in South Florida. Since its inception, the Archbishop’s Charities and Development Drive (ABCD) has always been a conduit to carrying out God’s Will. The many life-changing programs and ministries of the Archdiocese of Miami are a resource that people continue to turn to in times of trouble, and people continue to seek the help of the Church.

As Catholics, when we find ourselves in trouble, we look to the Lord for guidance and help, and He always answers our prayers, often through His Church. Through your gift, you are the answer to someone’s prayers.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam — “for the greater glory of God.” Each year, the Archdiocese of Miami recognizes and honors Donors who have supported the ABCD at the highest level for five or more consecutive years by inducting them into the AMDG Society. Their generosity is truly transformational and will have a lasting impact on our Catholic community and those it serves.

Thank you for your sacrificial generosity and loyal stewardship.

When I was a student in my parish school, Sacred Heart in Lake Worth, Fla., the sisters taught us to write at the top of every paper, every homework assignment: J.M.J., which stood for Jesus, Mary and Joseph. It was a way of making even school work a prayer — a lifting up of our minds and hearts to God. Under these initials, we also wrote: A.M.D.G., an abbreviation of the Latin phrase, Ad Majorem Dei Gloria, which means: For the greater glory of God. We should always do what we do for the greater glory of God. But giving God the glory is supposed to stretch us — which was, I think, the point the sisters were trying to make when they also had us write A.M.D.G. on our papers. You didn’t bring God much glory without giving it your best effort.

Over the years, the good people of our archdiocese have been giving their best effort — a sacrificial effort — in the support of the Archbishop’s Charities and Development campaign (ABCD) which funds the ministries of our archdiocese above and beyond what happens in our parishes. This January, once again, I am appealing to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Miami to support the ABCD. Of course, I know that some people in the news when they hear their parish priest asking them to make a sacrificial pledge once again might be tempted to shout out: “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!” But let us remember that all this is Ad Majorem Dei Gloria.
