A letter from the president

Dear Class of 2020,

It has been an honor for me to serve you during your senior year at Hoban. It is now an honor to salute you in your liminal transition from high school to even higher orders of education and service.

This may be the last time I’ll have the privilege of addressing you, so I want to share a few thoughts on reverberation. If you’re a musician, you’ve surely heard the term “reverb.” Well, I’m speaking more broadly about the reverb you’ll experience throughout your life—even without a guitar handy. Because it’s one of the great wonders of life. How people and experiences and memories you have as a person now continue to reverberate in your life for decades to come.

And that reverberation will certainly include your teachers at Hoban— and your coaches, your counselors, your parish priests and ministers. The older you get the more you will realize how important these mentors have been to you. I assure you: you will find yourself looking them up years from now just to tell them how much their instruction or advice or lessons reverberate in your life. And it will mean the world to them. That is a mentor’s food and drink. You don’t have to wait. You could tell them today. But just know that this will happen and you may be surprised and delighted when it does.

There is another group who you will experience the reverb phenomenon with: Your first teachers—your parents. They’re beaming with pride right now. They will walk with you every day of your life, sometimes literally, sometimes figuratively. When I was a few days old, my parents gave me the greatest gift I’ve ever received—the sacrament of baptism. Years later, they gave me the second greatest gift of my life—the gift of Catholic education.

Hoban’s greatest legacy to you is your formation in Holy Cross which you share with graduates past and future. Our core values reverberate in Knights across the generations and will enliven your spirit all the years of your life. When you meet other Hoban alumni, ask them about what’s reverberating for them today. Their answers may surprise you.

I will always feel a special bond with the Class of 2020. Thank you for making me feel so welcome in my first year at Hoban. May the words of our patron, Blessed Basil Moreau “the mind will not be cultivated at the expense of the heart” burn deeply into your hearts and minds and remind you to live out Christ’s teaching to “love God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind; and to love your neighbor as yourself.”

I congratulate each of you on this milestone in your formation. Always remember, Hoban and Holy Cross are true to you.

Dear Class of 2020,

Congratulations on reaching graduation! You are an amazing group of young adults who fully exemplify the values and mission of Archbishop Hoban. We, the Hoban family, are so proud of your accomplishments. I have especially enjoyed walking this journey with you for the last four years. It seems like just yesterday it was August 2016 and we all started our freshmen year!

Over the last few weeks I’ve been thinking back on times we’ve been together over the last four years. Most specifically I remember how nervous each of you looked as freshmen on those first days of school, being driven through the Mum Day line and receiving your party hats as you walked in through the Dome.

To this past fall when you were the leaders staying up all night decorating and lining the drive welcoming our current freshmen to their first Mum Day experience.

Thank you for being strong leaders within our Hoban family who embody the Holy Cross Core Values. Each day I see you being role models who demonstrate to both adults and students what it means to strive for excellence, live with integrity and serve others, all while having a lot of fun and laughs along the way. Our Hoban family is better because of you!

In days, weeks, and months ahead I will pray for your continued successes. Please know that you are always welcome to return to the Castle; to tell us about your success, seek assistance through your challenges and continue to inspire new generations of Hoban students!

This year especially I look forward to a day (hopefully soon) when you can all come back to Campus to see each other and our faculty as you so deserve. Thank you for being such remarkably bright, caring, creative, funny and compassionate members of our Hoban family.

By most people’s standards (including my own, when I’m thinking rationally), I had a pretty great high school experience. I excelled academically, played on a varsity team for a season, endEditor-in-Chief ed up with an amazing group of friends and underwent a fantastic period of personal growth. Still, when I first realized that I probably wasn’t going back to school, I was relieved. I allowed myself to see high school the way I wanted to see it: a grueling trek through psychological damage and a level of stress that drove me to the lowest of lows. Leaving that behind didn’t seem like the worst thing.

It took a couple months in isolation for me to realize that this socalled grueling trek was actually one of the best journeys I’ll probably ever take.

I love the girl who came out the other side (or, at least, I’m finally learning to). She is strong. She is compassionate. She loves harder than anyone I’ve ever known. She once genuinely resigned herself to the belief that she’d never actually be happy, and now she finds true beauty in the world. She once epitomized darkness. Now, she is learning to be the light.

The version of myself who entered high school four years ago wasn’t ready to be the person I am today. She was naive. Her personality was a mere blending of the people who’d surrounded her. She hadn’t felt true pain, the kind that leaves you so broken that you can’t think and spend days, weeks, months feeling hopelessly and irretrievably lost.

The last four years put this bright-eyed little idiot through the ringer. They showed her how to love, but taught her that most people wouldn’t love her in the same way. They built up her intelligence, but with it her predisposition to overthink and overanalyze until she wound up crying on the floor. They gave her so many strengths, but made her painfully aware of her weaknesses.

In summation, they built her up and broke her down, all at the same time.

Standing here now, with all this in my rear view, I can’t remember many specifics. I have notoriously bad long-term memory. I do, however, remember broad strokes and important moments, and if they’ve taught me anything, it’s this: happiness because of, not in spite of.

Though all around me the world is falling apart—though the life I knew has come crashing down—I, at my core, am happy today. I didn’t get to this point despite all that has happened to me. Rather, it was the rejections which broke me that taught me I was strong. It was the loneliness which crippled me that taught me to deeply value true friends. It was the times at which I lost my faith in a brighter tomorrow that taught me the meaning of hope. I am happy because of that which I’ve overcome. As long as I never forget that, I know I’ll approach each obstacle in life as an opportunity to grow and become a better version of myself.

As we part ways and embark on the next phases of our lives, I wish I could tell you that I hope for nothing but good fortunes in your future.

If young adulthood has taught me anything, though, I should actually hope you struggle. I should hope that the next four years push you to your breaking point, and that the four years after that push you even further. And then, at the same time, I should hope that you fight—fight to overcome the barriers to your success, fight to bounce back from the darkness that pulls you in, fight to keep the faith even when every sensible voice in your head is telling you to give up. I hope all these things because I truly wish for you the best that life has to offer, and that is not an existence without pain or hardship. Rather, it is a grueling trek. It is a grueling trek that beats you up and teaches you how to fight like hell so that one day—one glorious day—you can look back on all that you’ve been through and see the beauty and resilience that has resulted from your pain.

One of my best friends was born on Sept. 11, 2001. She celebrates her birthday every year on a day that is ingrained in our memory as the worst terrorist act in American history.

Editor-in-Chief I remember where I was when I heard about the shooting at Marjory Stoneman-Douglas High School. My phone balanced on Mr. Yanko’s podium as I read to our Mock Trial Team that the early death count was seven.

Only weeks ago, we stopped theatre rehearsal to announce that the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education cancelled the state Mock Trial competition because of COVID-19. My teammates and I excused ourselves to cry.

This pandemic is just one of the many historical events that have impacted our lives. I say historical because, even though they have yet to appear in our history textbooks, they will one day. We will, one day.

As the class of 2020, our lives have been plenty tumultuous: our class is the first to spend our whole lives under the shadow of the 9/11 attacks; we went to school worried about gun violence and spent class periods discussing what we’d do in the event of a school shooting; now, even our college experience may be altered because of a virus outbreak.

I remember, at the March for Our Lives in Cleveland, there was a group with a sign that read “history has its eyes on you,” a quote from Lin Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton.” Four years of listening to that soundtrack before shows and on the bus to cross country meets, and I’m finally understanding what it meant.

From birth, the class of 2020 has actively participated in history. Whether we wanted to or not, we’ve helped write the AP History tests for which our kids will one day cram. Truly, history has watched the class of 2020.

It’s bittersweet. History has rarely been happy, and neither have what seem to be our defining moments. Do we want to be known for missing our graduations or hiding in storage closets during lockdowns?

Maybe not.

But maybe that won’t be our singular legacy.

Maybe we’ll be known for the way we called our friends every day when we were apart, or revitalized letter writing. Maybe we’ll be known for how we fought senior slide with Zoom classes and YouTube videos. Maybe we’ll be known for the fact that, even when the world stumbled to a halt, our high school experience didn’t.

We missed out on some of the most important memories of our high school years, but that doesn’t negate the ones we’ve already made.

Abruptly-ended senior seasons don’t replace our recollections of gameday traditions. Cancelled dances can’t erase our favorite homecoming nights. Untraditional graduations haven’t changed the fact that we made it: every study session, sleepless night and internationally-felt catastrophic event amounted to a success for every one of us.

I leave you with this: Miranda, on the topic of Hamilton, once said that “history is entirely created by the person who tells the story.”

Stay home and stay safe, yes, but don’t forget that history has its eyes on us. And that same history is available to us for both creation and interpretation.

We can change our legacies.

I don’t know that much about anything. I’m 18 years old. What I do know is that everyone knows the most about something: themselves. I don’t know who you are, what Managing Editor you’re thinking or what life you want to live. That’s a simple fact. I don’t know who you really are. Only you know that, and only I know about myself. So, in my final words with The Visor, I’d like to let you all know who I am, what I dream about and what goes on in my head.

I want my parents to live on forever with each other. I want them to have the perfect life they deserve. I never want them to have to work another day in their lives (even though they will never stop working). I want them to travel and learn everything they can about the world around them. I want them to send me postcards from wherever they are and each one to read “we’re happy” in my mother’s handwriting at the bottom. Then, when they’re ready, I want them to stop. I want them to live in the house I grew up in for the rest of their lives. I never want them to grow old or feel the effects of Father Time. I want to send my kids to their house, have them fight over which room they want (probably Ellen’s) and get asked if they want pancakes, a pizza or Taco Bell at three in the morning. I want my parents to be happy and healthy for the rest of their lives.

I want my sister to find her dream job. She already found her person, her future husband Chris (who’s just like my father), and I already know that they are a perfect fit. If you could see the way they look at and interact with each other, you’d know what I know. I want her to find that job that satisfies her every need: money, location, coworkers and vacation time. I want this for Chris, too.

Both being recent college graduates (O-H!), I’ve witnessed how hard they’ve worked to get their new life together off the ground; they’ve earned so much more than the means they have now. I want them to have that big white house with a wrap-around porch like Ellen likes, accompanied by the sound of a third, fourth and/or fifth little voice that’s just as loud as her’s. I know what they’ve earned and I can’t wait for it all to work out for them.

I want my brother to achieve his dreams. I want him to find a great job in whatever city he wants. New York, Chicago, San Diego, Seattle, Boston, Columbus. Wherever he wants to go, I want him to be there. Obviously, I want him to stay close to home, but Luke Lauterjung is bigger than Ohio. He’s capable of more than any of us could ever fathom. I want him to be with whoever makes him happy. Whoever that guy may be, he doesn’t know how lucky he is, because if Luke Lauterjung chooses him, then he must be pretty special. I want Luke to never stop complaining, because he’s right and he always deserves better. He deserves the best.

For The Kool-Aid Jammers (not all of the Jammers, but the ones who know I’m talking about them), you boys know what I want for you. I want you all to find the woman that you deserve, the one who makes you a better person and accepts you for who you are. I believe that all of us will be monumentally successful in whatever we want to do. I want you all to build a comfortable life for yourselves that will be blessed with fortune, families and multiple championships for your favorite sporting clubs. However, between the championships and children, I want us all to come back to Hoban one more time. I want Dom to break the news to us that Mr. Lucey is retiring. I want Tom to pull up in whatever sports car suits his mood. I want Joey to bring some banging food that his smoke show of a wife made. I want Macinga to still be rocking Vans and a “Led Zeppelin” t-shirt. I want Sam to drive in from somewhere far away from Doylestown. I want Skelin to show up in a green Jeep, but even more tricked out than the one he has now. I want DJ to be on aux and play “Dior” and “Orange Soda.” I want Alec to still be our quarterback, fitting up the whole squad. And I want Jaren to forever be my best friend.

For Erica Mae, I want you to wake up every day with a smile on your face. I want you to find joy in every aspect of your life. I want you to be with me through every high and low moment and to be with you for all of yours. I want you to keep bringing me in when my head is out the door and keep putting me back together when I’m out of order. I want you to not only have your dreams, but to help you achieve them. I want you never to love soccer or Mac Miller as much as I do. I want you to grow into who you want to and will be. More than anything, I want you to understand that I desire so much more for you than you’ll ever realize, whether our lives are connected or not. You may be embarrassed right now, knowing that anyone can read this (hey Mr. and Mrs. Rey, how ya doin’?) but that’s ok, because I don’t care who knows how I feel about you. I want to be with you every second of every day, no matter what we’re doing. I want you to know that there’s no place I’d rather be.

I don’t know that much about anything, but I know what I want. What I want more than anything is for the people I love, respect and admire to live happy, healthy and prosperous lives. Nothing will make me happier than watching all of these desires of mine come true, for all of these incredible people are capable of more than I could ever dream of.

So it’s the end. And not the end we would have chosen. Things are strangely different than we ever could have imagined them being. Still, my heart is filled with gratitude for many reasons. Probably the biggest one is that I took this journey with all of you. You guys pushed me to be the best that I could be.

Through it all, you always saw the good in me. The good I sometimes couldn’t see in myself. High school wasn’t easy, but you helped me overcome my suffering through laughter, caring and encouragement.

I am so proud to say that I was a part of the Class of 2020. We’ve each been through so much, but from the very beginning we were strong of mind, heart and spirit.

If any class could overcome this, it’s us. It had to be us.

I want to thank you all for the memories. The good times that we enjoyed together, and the bad times that made us better people. There isn’t a single doubt in my mind that every person in this class will go far, will climb high and be more successful than we ever thought possible.

Again, I know this isn’t the ending we wanted, nor would have chosen for ourselves. And I know it might not help you to hear this now, but this is our story. A story that we get to tell because it’s ours. I will find joy in our story and the journey we took to get here.

Entering Hoban, I was one of two boys from my grade school. I never had a good group of friends before and I wanted high school to be the place where I did. Not only did I find the group of friends I wanted, Staff Reporter but they ended up becoming more like family to me. I don’t know where I would be without them, honestly.

But, aside from them, two teachers impacted my life and are part of the reason I am the man I am today.

My relationship with Mr. Kraus started in beginning art. He and I got along well, but at the time I didn’t think our relationship would progress the way it did. Throughout the next few years, though, making trips to his room to say hello and joke around became routine. He was someone that made me smile when I needed it and gave me advice when I asked for it. Over the years, he became a good friend. We still look back on our crazy New York trip and share a good laugh over it. More importantly, Mr. Kraus became someone I could trust with personal information. When something went wrong in my life, I knew I could count on him to be there for me and help. I could never thank Mr. Kraus enough for how much he has helped and been there for me throughout my four years of high school.

My relationship with Mr. Tocchi also began freshman year. When my original math class wasn’t working out, I made the switch to Mr. Tocchi’s class. Now, at first, he was just my math teacher, but after an open house, we sat around and ate pizza while I waited for my ride, and our relationship started to progress from there. After freshman year, I went to Mr. Tocchi’s room every morning, a tradition I kept until the end. Our relationship really changed at Spes 40. He was not my group leader, but I never missed an opportunity to give him a hug and tell him how impactful this Spes experience had been for me. I was fortunate enough to become a Spes leader this year and share yet another retreat experience with him.

Mr. Tocchi has become one of my best friends. He was there to support me through my lowest points and celebrate with me through my highest points. It is really hard to put into words how much Mr. Tocchi really means to me. He is one of the most important role models in my life. Hoban showed me the value of family in my friends, who are more like brothers to me, and my relationships with Mr. Kraus and Mr. Tocchi. Leaving them is going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I am excited to embark on my next journey as a Mountaineer, but I am sad to leave behind my Hoban family. I will always be a Knight, and hopefully the relationships I have made in high school will be for life. On that note, I am closing the door on this chapter of my life, and taking my next steps as a Mountaineer.

As an incoming freshman, I immediately noticed the wonderful community that Hoban had to offer. Little did I know the next four years I spent with that community would shape me into who I am today. Every friendship I made throughout the last four years will forever be cherished in my heart and mind. Most notably, Hoban’s community has some of the finest teachers and staff that you will ever meet. Each member of the staff participates and interacts with the student body on a very personal level. Whether it’s going on the Spes Unica retreats or attending sports games to cheer us on, Hoban teachers are always staying connected with their students. While many beloved teachers have left for various reasons, every new addition has integrated themselves very well. The athletic staff is also one of the best you will find at any high school in Ohio and they have a true passion for their jobs. Everything the athletic staff does is to give Hoban athletes the best experience possible while simultaneously preparing them for collegiate competition. I couldn’t thank every Hoban family member enough for everything they taught me and the amazing years we spent together. Love you Hoban.
