Welcome to Hoban’s 40th Annual Extravaganza Gala, Havana Knights! We are excited to welcome you to campus for what promises to be an evening to remember. Extravaganza celebrates all that is good about Hoban–most notably our greatest asset, our people. Thank you for joining us as we continue to lead in the Holy Cross tradition.
Since 1953, Hoban has prepared students to meet the unique challenges of the world around them. Our mission as a Catholic, Holy Cross school is to educate the hearts and minds of students, so they develop the competence to see and the courage to act. In my estimation, this is the noblest of causes.
It is imperative that we work to keep tuition affordable so that the Hoban experience remains accessible for all. We appreciate our families’ financial sacrifice to provide their children with a Hoban education. Still, tuition revenue alone does not cover the costs associated with educating more than 860 students. Next school year, we will see this enrollment number increase to over 900! Extravaganza gives Hoban the “extra” leverage we need to provide our Knights with vital financial and material resources, meaningful spiritual engagement opportunities, world-class academic programming, robust cocurricular activities and a top-tier facility. To accomplish all of this, your support remains vital.

This challenge originated with Mr. Ralph L. Bernard Sr. who passed away in 2009 at the age of 94. The Bernard Family, with the support of generous Extravaganza guests, has raised $2,356,598 for student financial assistance over the past 20 years.

THREE GENERATIONS OF GIVING
The Wartko name has long been intertwined with the Hoban community. For more than 60 years—dating back to the late 1960s—the Wartko Family has been a steadfast supporter of Hoban students and Catholic education. Doris and Donald Wartko chose to send all five of their children to Hoban. Over the years, each of the five and their spouses has made their mark on Hoban.

As dedicated parents, Doris and Donald played an active role in the Hoban community. They were a familiar presence at school events— grilling sausages at Oktoberfests, preparing meals for athletic team banquets, and taking a leading role in the Save Hoban campaign, which ultimately ensured the school’s continued existence. They were both recipients of the Friend of Hoban Award for their exceptional service and loyalty to Hoban. Donald was recognized in 1983 and Doris in 2011.
Their legacy of generosity and commitment has only grown stronger with the next generation. Over the past six decades, the Wartko Family has been instrumental in nearly every major capital campaign and fundraising initiative. Their contributions have helped build the Holy Cross Chapel, name the Wartko Pavilion, and sponsor numerous events, including Extravaganza. Most recently, they have played a key role in transforming Hoban’s classrooms to enhance student learning.
Beyond financial contributions, the Wartko family continues to serve Hoban in meaningful ways. Patty Wartko has been a member of Hoban’s Board of Directors since 2014, currently serving as chair of the advancement committee. Her dedication is evident to all who serve alongside her, as she passionately champions fundraising initiatives and has guided the school through pivotal moments with grace and leadership. She was recognized for her many contributions in 2022 as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award.
The Wartko family’s impact now extends into its third generation. Tom and Margaret’s son, Matt Wartko (Class of 1999), continues the family’s legacy of service as a member of the Hoban Board of Directors. His expertise in law and construction has been invaluable in the development of the new student center and the plans to renovate Foley Commons.
It is impossible to fully capture the countless ways the Wartko family has shaped the Hoban community. Beyond their support for campus improvements, the Wartko Family Scholarship has provided lifechanging tuition assistance for dozens of students—this year alone, 28 students have benefitted from their generosity.
Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate welcoming the fourth generation of Wartko’s to Hoban. The strength of our school is, in no small part, due to the unwavering commitment of the Wartko family. We are immensely grateful and incredibly proud to call each of you Hoban Knights.
