Curator’s Statement

SquaredAlumni 2016 brings together eight of the most popular alumni from previous FourSquared exhibitions at Arc in support of local non-profit organizations. Each artist will be exhibiting four works. The exhibition is a reflection of the Arc partners’ strong and abiding interest in supporting San Francisco Bay Area art, artists and community. All of the artists in the exhibition will be donating about 20% of their proceeds to the beneficiary organizations. Arc will be donating 100% of its proceeds from this exhibition to those organizations. Curator: Michael Yochum is the author of SF Art News, which maintains a list of featured art events and openings in San Francisco, as well as profiling local artists in periodic articles. Michael Yochum, Matthew Frederick, Stephen C. Wagner and Priscilla Otani are co-founders of Arc Gallery & Studios.

Rebecca Fox Circular Explorations In this series, Circular Explorations, I explore the contradiction of material by transforming steel using various metal-working techniques resulting in work that evokes contemplation and further investigation. By manipulating the circle in various configurations, I use minimal positive and negative space to play upon tension, balance and form with various textural elements. The circle helps to achieve the contrast of material vs. form by invoking a sense of continuity, calmness and tranquility.

Paul Gibson 4 of 4 In this current body of work, I am going back or re-thinking the “picture plane”. This is one of the recurring problems in visual art, the representation of space and objects within it on a picture plane. The concept is “perceptual perspective” with the use of multiple vanishing points. This moves the view’s eye/vision in and out of the plane. It seems basic, bit it is not a problem easily solved. Using glass, tools, orange cord and an abstract table top surface, I try to solve this basic visual problem. 4 of 4 is an example of the possibility of more than one right answer.

Joseph Kowalczyk Beside the Mask We Make III “Wearing a mask to impress others. - If the face you always show the world is a mask, someday there will be nothing beneath it. Because if you spend too much time focusing on other people’s perception of you, or who everyone else expects you to be, you can eventually forget who you really are.” May 30, 2014, “The Mind Unleashed

ing underneath this new layer of paint.

When I was a child around the age of 6 or so, I remember one day my father began repainting the interior walls of our home. Upon starting my room with paint roller in hand, he jokingly painted a great big smiley face on my wall… directly over my bed. It terrified me! I’m not sure why it scared me so much. The smiley face had no personality, no portrayal of maliciousness; it was just two rectangles above a simple smile. After seeing how I felt, my father immediately painted over it, but STILL I was scared. I knew that although the face was covered, that colossal smile was still there, hid-

Over 20 years later I still remember the event vividly, and I find it fascinating. The fear obviously wasn’t based on any legitimate threat; it was completely inside my head. I can’t help but to consider the fears I hold today and how they might influence my decisions. What fears are legitimate, and which ones are just smiley faces? And furthermore, how did they get there? Katja Leibenath

Views from the Studio Katja Leibenath’s artwork begins with experiencing a scene or moment and recording it through a series of photographs, drawings, and observations. These experiential sessions ignite new series of work. Back in the studio, Leibenath uses her direct visual recollection and her experiential memory to shape each piece based on the new body’s subject matter. She intuitively builds the paintings in layers, relying just as heavily on formal considerations as she does on the source material. The finished painting is a record of the painting process as well as an exploration of the subtle nuances of the moment. Originally from Germany with a background in architecture and art, Leibenath has been painting in San Francisco since 2006. Her work is part of several private collections nationwide and has been exhibited in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Atlanta, in addition to San Francisco.

Four Metamorphoses of Seduction My main body of work is to interpret and illustrate episodes of the Greek mythology or portray its eminent characters. In this mini series, the topic focuses on four stories in which Zeus had to metamorphose himself in various shapes and or animals to succeed seducing women or goddesses. In many stories, Zeus disguises himself in animals and appeals the compassion and love that the female characters feel for different creatures: Europa is successful in taming the white bull, Hera gives protection to a vulnerable little bird, Persephone is grateful to the Serpent for having protected and escorted her during a long journey. The most peculiar metamorphose of this series is the golden shower that impregnated Danae. She is imprisoned in a tower and in her isolation, the only thing that she can feel from the outside world is the rain coming from a tiny opening. Each metamorphose is a demonstration of Zeus power and his ability to understand the singularity of each women’s yearning.

Artist’s Cabaret This being the centennial of the DADA movement, 1916-2016, I have been inspired by the happenings that took place at the Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, Switzerland, the cafe where the artists and poets escaping the war that spread throughout Europe would gather for performances, poetry readings and music, often leading to chaos. I see the shadow of that era over the times we live in now. I relive in the making of the books the creative times and artists that sought out a creative means to react and maintain some sanity.

Night Photography We have had a longstanding interest in night photography as reflected in the variety of subject matter and places depicted in our work. We see our night work as a good example of the continuing desire to explore our environment, to see common sights in a different way and to capture images that reveal the mystery of the everyday. We are struck by the transformative power of night lighting (whether moonlight or artificial) to create beauty and feeling in urban settings. We have an attraction to what has been left behind to be destroyed, to decay, or just to wait to be reanimated by human presence. Although our work is not documentary, we see our urban landscape transforming so quickly that we often feel a sense of urgency to photograph the scenes that we are drawn to before they fall to the steady march of progress. About this Series From the tranquil setting of a bayside park, while much of the world is asleep, we observe the comings and goings of the rest of the world in planes that streak across the sky in patterns which compete with the star trails and reflect off the water, amplifying the light.

Rectangles In my abstract paintings I use repeated, handmade forms to create clusters, fields or grids. My recent work is a series of grid paintings made with tape, acrylic, gouache and gesso. The process involves adding and removing pieces of tape and rectangles of paint to make bands that are interconnected. Straight lines made by the machined tape and by scissors are paired with more unpredictable elements such as dripping, seeping paint and irregularly edged rectangles. I am exploring the balancing of the mechanical and the bodily, control and surprise, perfection and imperfection.
