A CENTURY OF SOUTHERN PUBLISHING

PELICAN

A Celebration Founded in 1926 by New Orleans poet and literary editor John McClure, Pelican Publishing was born in the storied Vieux Carré, steps from the Mississippi River, at a moment when the American South was finding its voice. Pelican Publishing’s original home, the Pelican Bookshop on Royal Street, was a gathering place for the literary circle of the era — William Faulkner, Sherwood Anderson, Caroline Durieux, and others who believed that the stories of the South deserved to be told with dignity and craft. For a century, Pelican has done exactly that. From the WPA-commissioned folklore of Gumbo Ya-Ya to the inspirational reach of Zig Ziglar’s See You at the Top; from the beloved Cajun Night Before Christmas ® — which launched Pelican’s entire children’s book division in 1973 — to Leah Chase’s Dooky Chase Cookbook, an enduring testament to Creole culinary tradition, Pelican’s catalog reads like a biography of the American South itself.

Pelican Now In 2019, Pelican joined the Arcadia Publishing family, ensuring its backlist of more than 2,500 titles and its mission — to publish books of quality and permanence that enrich the lives of those who read them — would endure for generations to come. Today, under Publisher Scott Campbell, Pelican continues to tell the stories that matter: the history that shaped us, the food that defines us, the heroes who protected us, and the children’s classics that have been read aloud in Louisiana living rooms for fifty years. This catalog celebrates the full breadth of what Pelican publishes — history, biography, cookbooks, military history, Southern folklore, children’s books, and more— organized to reflect a century of storytelling from the Gulf South and beyond.

Voices of the Dust Bowl

The story of the Alamo encompasses more than a siege during the Texas Revolution. That story begins in the 1500s with the Native Americans who inhabited the area. Page by page, different voices—Spanish, Tejano, Texian, Mexican, and American—describe history from their individual viewpoints.

The 1930s Dust Bowl was the greatest ecological tragedy in the United States. A combination of drought and fierce winds left America’s Great Plains bare. A series of narratives brings to life the voices of this period.
