Arcadia Contemporary presents THREE painters, all UNDER the age of THIRTY, who we believe, represent the future of representational painting.

Eac h ar tist’s wor ks are steeped in the tradition of strong draftsmanship and respect for their “ar tistic predecessors,” yet, bring a fresh eye and unique, contemporary take on realistic painting.

Arcadia Contemporary is proud to present this first, major exhibition for each of these young painters.

DANIEL BILMES B. 1989 – Currently resides in Los Angeles, CA

Through tactile textures and delicate expressions, Daniel Bilmes’ paintings weave together the magical and mysterious. Each canvas marries realism and symbolism as his imagery lies “somewhere between the vitality of the Russian circus and the gravitas of a Churchill speech.” Bilmes began his artistic journey at the age of 8 under the tutelage of his father, the respected artist and educator, Semyon Bilmes which created a lasting foundation of curiosity that continues to drive and inform his work today. The beauty of Bilmes’ paintings is achieved by a unique technique that is as much subtractive as it is additive. For all the paint applied to his canvases, much of it is scraped, scratched and removed to reveal timeless, haunting and elegant images.

RAE PERRY B. 1989 – Currently resides in Dublin, Ireland

Only a female painter could create the intimacy and intensity displayed in Rae Perry’s canvases.

The physical aspects of her paintings are influenced by the style of American and Danish impressionists from the turn of the 20th century. The psychological themes, however, seem to be drawn from contemporary, dark romanticism. After briefly attending an atelier in Italy where she completed a drawing course, Perry then decided to trust her own instincts and began painting without guidance from others and the results have been nothing short of extraordinary. Often using herself as a model, her elegantly, still works explore a host of dualities including the intimate and universal, the classical and the unconventional.

KATIE G. WHIPPLE B. 1991 – Currently resides in Long Island City, NY

Growing up in Indiana never could have prepared Katie for the travels her talents would take her. First stop would be New York City to study academic painting at the prestigious Grand Central Atelier. Soon after, as the recipient of the 2013-2014 Alma Schapiro Prize, she traveled to the American Academy in Rome to study the works of the old masters. Later in Florence and Naples she would study antiquity and the Renaissance. Laughingly, she recalls that while class trips required that she be indoors to study anatomy, the lure of the European countryside convinced her to “befriend” olive and lemon trees and depict them. Many painting awards would follow, including scholarships from the Grand Central Atelier, the Art Renewal Center, and a purchase award from the Indiana State Museum for their permanent collection. Katie is one of the few still life artists whose works are a true reflection of her personality; buoyant, vibrant and filled with eternal optimism.
