Description: The HANNA High Range Combo Meter is a multi-use instrument that can be used to measure soil pH, EC/TDS and temperature. Knowing the pH level of soil is very important as it is a factor in the availability of soil nutrients. Electrical conductivity (EC) and TDS are measurements of total dissolved soilds in water, where EC levels detect solids that conduct electricity. An EC measurement can reveal amounts of clay in the soil, salinity, and moisture contact and both pH and EC/TDS measurements will help to distinguish the amount of nutrients available to plants, if nutrients will burn plants, if salinity needs correction, or if additional nutrients are needed.

An IPM Approach to Controlling Leafminers.

Leafminers, liriomyza sp. feed within leaves or needles and produce damage that looks like meandering tunnels (mines).

Although leafminers rarely pose a threat to a healthy plant, the damage they cause is very visible.

Monitoring using Blue or Yellow Sticky Traps (page 32) is the first step in managing leafminers. These traps will capture the adults and alert you to when eggs are being laid so you can be prepared to treat for the emergence of the larval stage. Regular inspection of the trap is essential to the timing of interventions.

When populations reach an unacceptable level we recommend using Spinosad (Monterey Garden Insect Spray (page 51) or Entrust WP (see on our website) as a knockdown spray for the larvae. Follow knockdown sprays with programmatic releases of the Leafminer Parasite, Diglyphus isaea.

Follow these applications with releases of Beneficial Nematodes (page 44-45) to control larval stages in the soil.
