’Tis the season

EMMIS PUBLISHING LP PRESIDENT

THE HOLIDAYS ARE NOW FULLY UPON US, and I’m not entirely sure how that

happened so suddenly. I feel like I’ve been moving about through a thick fog since March, trying to navigate working and acquiring supplies and services safely. The silver lining is that I’ve discovered some new ways to localize my personal shopping to avoid the masses at big-box stores. We’ve certainly seen the devastating effects of the pandemic on the restaurant industry. Retailers have also taken some hard hits this year, but I’m encouraged to see new boutiques entering the marketplace. Tuggle’s Gifts & Goods on page 11, for example, brings quite a selection of Hoosier-made wares to the Fountain Square neighborhood. Given that we tend to be generous not only with our families and friends this time of year, but also make donations to charities during the Christmas season, we’ve included a roundup of seven boutiques that support the community in various ways. “Value Added” by Bailey Briscoe (pg. 30) highlights a few of these conscientious entities where you can maximize your spending dollars while giving back. Starting on page 37, our listings of literally hundreds of Central Indiana outlets cover clothing and accessories, household items, gifts, hobby gear, and much more. While a few businesses are operating online only or with limited hours, most are open to the public and offer conveniences like curbside pickup, delivery, and private shopping appointments to mitigate COVID risk. With policies constantly changing and evolving, we recommend checking with individual stores before venturing out.

Knock on Wood

JUST IN TIME for holiday shopping, Fountain Square newcomer Tuggle’s Gifts & Goods opened its doors in early November. Woodworker Ross Tuggle and his wife Brooke estimate that about 75 percent of their inventory is Indiana-made (including the ArtMix ornament on page 13). Over time, they strive to bump up that figure to 100. The owners’ handiworks—his wall art and her polymer-clay earrings—are among the fabulous finds here. Their well-behaved doodle, Biscuit Louise, is worth a visit, too. 1016 Virginia Ave., 317-672-5023, facebook.com/tugglesindy

How to create in-house work and study zones to maximize function, productivity, and style. BY AMY LYNCH

C

endeavors from inside our dwellings has become the new normal, with the COVID-19 virus sending telecommuters and remote learners scrambling to carve out spaces that are both attractive and functional. “Home offices are in high demand right now with everyone working from home,” says Dustin Polster, sales manager at Houseworks. “It’s become one of our biggest categories since the pandemic started. We’re having a hard time keeping items in stock and getting home-office products from our vendors.” Likewise, Kittle’s Design Studio has also noted a significant increase in customers wanting to create working environments and virtual school stations.

Modern artwork and unspoiled views of the outdoors accentuate this BDI Sequel 20 office set from Houseworks.

Office Space

ONDUCTING BOTH business and academic

Martin Furniture’s Hartford Collection, available at Kittle’s Design Studio, includes multiple desk and bookcase options to customize your work setup.

“We’ve been seeing people taking lofts and basement areas and turning those open spaces into work spaces.” LISA HAYES, KITTLE’S DESIGN STUDIO

Essential elements TO HELP YOU FUNCTION at your most

productive level, a good home office or work space should include a handful of necessary pieces of furniture—first and foremost, a quality desk and chair. “If you have to sit at your desk for several hours a day, it’s vital to have a comfortable office chair with good ergonomics,” Polster mentions. 16

IM SHOPS | 2020

With options ranging from carved, solid wood to sleek, modern metal, selecting the ideal desk really boils down to budget and personal preference. Try to coordinate the furniture in your work area with the existing style of other pieces and rooms in your home to prevent a jarring transition. Sit/stand desks are currently popular, allowing virtual

students and telecommuters the ability to stretch throughout the day. Also, make sure to stock up on office and school supplies like pencils, pens, markers, legal pads, notebooks, paper clips, and a stapler so you’ll have the tools and support materials you need within arm’s reach.

Optimum organization IN A HOME OFFICE, e-learning station, or

arts-and-crafts corner, clutter can quickly get out of control. Keeping the chaos contained and tamed requires adequate storage, along with a good dash of selfdiscipline. “A lateral filing cabinet is a must-have to stay organized and keep your workspace clear,” Polster says. “A shelving unit with bins can also keep clutter under control. As a modern, contemporary store, we at Houseworks love the clean lines of our office products. They make for an organized office space that tends to stay that way. Having an office that’s simple and uncluttered keeps your mind clear and ready to be productive.”

“We’ve been seeing people taking lofts and basement areas and turning those open spaces into work spaces, which is nice to keep the main living areas visually clutter-free,” says Kittle’s interior designer Lisa Hayes. Keeping style and substance top of mind is key to creating a practical yet motivational business area at home— one in which you’ll feel good spending a major chunk of the day. Whether you’re upgrading an existing home office or carving out a brand-new space from scratch, here are some critical components and a few useful suggestions to consider.

From Simple to Extravagant, Home Details of Savvy Décor can meet all of your hardware needs.

LARGEST SELECTION OF CABINET HARDWARE

“Consider keeping window treatments simple to provide a rest for the eyes.” CARYN O’SULLIVAN, DRAPERY STREET

Bookcases and desks with drawers for files and supplies provide the means to quickly stash and stow papers, folders, and other office paraphernalia. If you’re working within the context of a larger living room, look for coffee tables and ottomans that provide hidden storage to keep the area neat and orderly. Even in the digital age, an old-school desktop or wall calendar makes it easy to track appointments, meetings, scheduling notes, and deadlines at a glance. Kids might think it’s fun to give the surface behind their desks a coat of

chalkboard paint onto which they can write and doodle freely.

School solutions SINCE COVID-19 BECAME a concern back

in March, many families have been thrust into navigating the challenges of virtual school, requiring the transformation of home offices into spaces that are also conducive to e-learning—an undertaking that’s often easier said than done.

“For kids’ work stations, I recommend using an area without a TV nearby where the kids can still be supervised,” Hayes suggests. “Kids can each have their own storage baskets in different colors to put away work and papers at the end of the day.” “Make the room fun with colorful artwork and a good backdrop for the kids to use during virtual schooling or Zoom meetings,” Polster adds. “A peninsula desk with seating on both sides allows your child to sit in the room with you.” While adding age-appropriate decor and accessories can make a home office more welcoming for young users, Caryn O’Sullivan, owner of Drapery Street, advises against getting creative to the point of distraction. “It can be hard for a child to focus on the computer all day,” she says. “Consider keeping window treatments simple to provide a rest for the eyes. Get playful instead with fun colors and whimsical patterns in playrooms and kids’ bedrooms.”

See the light

Drapery Street in Carmel carries a full line of Hunter Douglas blinds to filter and optimize natural light.

18

IM SHOPS | 2020

lighting can have a big impact on the design of a home office or work space, and many of the choices are dependent on where the room is sited, the flow of traffic through the home, and what time of day or night the space is likely to see the greatest amount of use. “Everyone knows the feeling of sitting at a restaurant or on the back porch and having a beam of sunlight suddenly blind you as you’re trying to talk,” O’Sullivan describes. “You don’t want that to happen while you’re on a Zoom call. It’s also important you’re not straining your eyes to see the computer screen or constantly trying to adjust your screen to get rid of a distracting glare.” To control natural light, O’Sullivan recommends installing window treatments and operating systems with adjustable shades that can be raised in the morning, lowered to filter UV rays as the sunlight intensifies during the day, and then closed at night for privacy. “People often select a treatment they end up leaving closed all the time because it doesn’t offer light control,” she says. “This can result in a dark office that makes the afternoon slumps particularly hard to contend with.”

WINDOWS, WINDOW TREATMENTS, and

Connectivity concerns

An adjustable desk like this BDI model found at Houseworks allows the user flexibility to either sit or stand.

JUST ASK ANY PARENT who’s accommo-

dating virtual schooling at home how important connectivity and reliable WiFi are for effective work. If possible, position your office or work space in proximity to a router, or consider installing additional routers to maintain the best access for all internet users in the dwelling. This is particularly important if multiple people in the household are likely to participate in virtual meetings at the same time. After you evaluate your internet bandwidth to make sure everyone stays up to speed, you may want to call your service provider to discuss your needs and update your account. Investing in a wireless printer/copier/ scanner is a smart move for both kids and adults who need to print out contracts, worksheets, and other papers. And don’t neglect the value of cord management to eliminate cable clutter and streamline the work space. For those who need to concentrate while other meetings are going on, a good set of noise-cancelling headphones can be a lifesaver.

EVEN IF YOU DON’T have an entire room

to devote to business or school functions, it’s quite possible to carve out a dedicated work space in a corner, closet, nook, or along an empty wall. If you want to partition a room temporarily, mobile screens and dividers can be used to block off a portion of the area for instant office space during work hours and then folded or rolled to put away at the end of the day. “Utilizing the space you have in the room and planning before you purchase furniture is key to a functional home office,” Polster explains. “We can lay out your office to make sure everything fits perfectly.” Adding pieces that multitask is another good way to create a pop-up work area if space in the home is limited. For instance, a small lap desk can be stowed under a couch or bed or in a closet when not in use. “With most people just needing a laptop to work from home, a work space can be set up pretty much anywhere,” 20

IM SHOPS | 2020

“Utilizing the space you have in the room and planning before you purchase furniture is key to a functional home office.” DUSTIN POLSTER, HOUSEWORKS

Hayes says. “Lots of people are using smaller writing desks or setting up small tables to use as desks.”

Extra effort THERE’S NO RULE that says home offices

have to be bland, beige, or boring. Personal touches make any office feel more like home. A few well-chosen plants, art items, fidget toys, and accessories go a long way toward establishing a space where you’ll actually want to spend time. “I always like to do an accent wall in

the customer’s favorite color, a color that makes them happy every time they see it,” Polster says. “Artwork and accessories make it more fun for kids to spend time in the office. Kids have short attention spans and need things to look at to break up staring at a monitor for such long times.” Trying to stick to a routine can also help you optimize the use of your home office or virtual school space. Treat the day just as you would if you were still going to work or school outside the house. Dress for success and allow for timed breaks to eat lunch, snack, and recharge throughout the day.

HE LIST OF PEOPLE AND PLACES in need of support this year is a long one. From charities to small, independent businesses and local restaurants, where do you start? We would suggest it’s not about doing it all, but about doing the most with what you can. Retailers all over the city help customers make the most of their purchasing dollars by organizing fundraising efforts, donating profits, and operating with socially conscious missions in mind. When you buy items from these seven shops, you’re also providing living wages for vulnerable people around the world, contributing to a grant for Black-owned organizations, and building public structures around the city. Spending sprees have never been so worthwhile.

F

air trade is for fashionistas, too. In fact, if you scroll through byTavi’s Instagram feed, you might think you’re shopping the likes of BluePeppermint, Beauty + Grace, and other fan-favorite Indy boutiques. Although byTavi fits in with its stylish peers, the shop operates a little differently. The conscientious retailer, which is a project of the Center for Global Impact, employs nearly 30 Cambodian women. With the sewing workshop based in an impoverished and underserved area, fair wages, benefits, and a safe and communal work environment go a long way toward preventing the women from falling victim to human trafficking and other dangerous situations.

They’re able to send their kids to school and put food on the table,” says Whitney Chuchla, director of U.S. operations. “These are normal things most of us take for granted here in America.” Because every purchase helps to pay it forward, byTavi began paying closer attention to trends as it started to grow. “When you looked at fair-trade products available a few years ago, you could see there was a major gap with the standard American shopper,” Chuchla says. “We realized it could benefit more people in the long term if we were able to please a larger audience.” Originating in Greenwood, byTavi has made a home for itself in downtown Franklin. It hired an in-house designer and branched out from traditional fair-trade fabrics and offerings, so now you’ll see denim jackets, swing dresses, and jogger pants on the racks. It also sells and donates masks in bold prints. 51 W. Monroe St., Franklin, 317-494-6226, bytavi.com

hile you’re on mass ave, pop inside Silver in the City’s neighbor, Global Gifts—a nonprofit that partners with 50 artisan groups from 40 different countries. When you spend your shopping dollars on handmade items from jewelry to seasonal decor to stationery, you provide assistance to artisans around the world. The fair-trade promise provides consumers peace of mind knowing the faces behind the products are equally and justly supported in key areas of work and life. Partners are paid fair wages upfront, which in turn allows them to sustain their crafts and provide for their families. And, the goods are produced in ways that preserve the environment rather than destroying it further.

SILVER IN THE CITY

T

he boards, covered with names of Black Americans who lost their lives at the hands of police, may have come down from the store’s front windows since last summer, but Silver in the City’s commitment to the minority community persists. Instead of a special sale or limited-edition product to commemorate the gift shop’s 20th year in business, owner Kristin Kohn established the Silver Linings Fund through the Central Indiana Community Foundation. The first round of fundraising will provide a $5,000 COVID19 relief grant to a Black-owned business in our own backyard. Seed money comes from the sale of $5 themed stickers, along with direct donations.

It was born from a moment of feeling powerless and needing to feel powerful,” Kohn says of the inspiration she gained from the turmoil of 2020. Silver in the City has been a longtime supporter of LGBTQ+ and reproductive rights, reflected in its stock of “Sorry About Mike Pence” tees, drag queen coffee-table books, and almost anything you can think of emblazoned with late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s face. In a normal year, various donation days and shopping events make it pretty easy to buy from one of Indy’s favorite merchants and find a way to give back to these causes. Previously, a certain percentage of sales went directly to local organizations focused on equality work. As for when that will resume? That may be determined by the volume of local shoppers this holiday season. 434 Massachusetts Ave., 317-955-9925; 111 W. Main St., Carmel, 317-993-3669; silverinthecity.com 32

Indianapolis is far from a third-world country, but it’s not hard to witness the impacts of poverty on our own people. To give back to that fight locally, Global Gifts organizes several roundups each year. Those funds get donated to worthy organizations individually chosen by each store. They never stray far from their fair-trade roots, typically supporting human rights and social justice causes and organizations like LGBTQ+, Black Lives Matter, and local soup kitchens. “These roundups give us a chance to support local efforts and create a community connection,” says marketing manager Sarah Swank. Prefer to donate your time instead of dollars? Both of the Indy-area Global Gifts stores are volunteer-run and could use extra personnel. 446 Massachusetts Ave., 317-423-3148; 1300 E. 86th St., 317-569-0670; globalgiftsft.com

PEOPLE FOR URBAN PROGRESS

t all started in 2008 with the demolition of the RCA Dome (or Hoosier Dome, depending on your generation). Michael and Jessica Bricker, siblings who would later create People for Urban Progress, knew “there was truly no ‘away’ in ‘throwaway’” and started inquiring about what happens to the materials when a structure that large comes down, specifically the white roof recognized by so many people in the Circle City. With a heart for rethinking waste and a little curiosity, the Bricker twins saved a piece of the Indianapolis skyline from a life in the landfill. Here’s how it works: PUP salvages material that would otherwise go to waste, quite literally, and uses it in reimagined products. The nonprofit is fueled by the sale of uber-unique and incredibly chic accessory designs, from wallets to duffel bags.

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY PEOPLE FOR URBAN PROGRESS

It’s important to recognize you can impact the community at different price points,” explains PUP’s executive director, Turae Dabney. The proceeds are then put back into the community through public-use structures and art installations. You know those orange stadium seats at IndyGo bus stops? That’s PUP. The organization has installed other trail stops and shade structures seen throughout the city. Since its origin, the PUP project list has only grown. Recycled items salvaged through its partnerships have included stadium seats, Super Bowl banners, and leather Amtrak seats. Stitchers stepped up during the early days of the pandemic to cut, sew, and donate face coverings to local childcare centers, health facilities, long-term care homes, and other essential businesses. Most recently, PUP took a stand in support of equality with its Ignitor collection. Featuring a backpack made from recycled pool covers and a T-shirt—conceptualized by a local African-American graphic designer—the line’s proceeds are intended for a PUP fellowship. The program’s goal is to give someone in the design community a microphone, tasking the fellow to continue the organization’s work by designing a project with local impact. 160 Steeples Blvd., peopleup.org

THE SECRET INGREDIENT

T

he north end of butler-tarkington is home to a sweet little block of shops that makes for a great afternoon stroll. One of the longest-standing tenants in the neighborhood is The Secret Ingredient, a boutique specializing in women’s fashion and accessories. Owner Jeanne Weber Rush attributes her “quiet giving” to her mother, saying she always lived by the motto “it’s more fun to give than to get.” The mentality that started as a spark for Rush is now part of the fabric of her business. Bracelet stack enthusiasts will want to add Blessing Bracelets to their wish lists. Four large beads remind the wearers to count their blessings (one for each bead) when they put them on for the day and again when they take off their jewelry in the evening. With gratitude trending almost as much as arm candy, the baubles make great gifts. And, they’re not only blessings for those who add them to their wardrobes, but for others as well—all profits are donated to Indianapolis charities. The Secret Ingredient is also known for its style shows. Rush partners with various nonprofits—sometimes upward of 20 per year—to produce fundraising fashion shows in which a portion of proceeds supports the host group. “I’m bad at saying no,” Rush chuckles. In her fourth decade of business, she provides an example of success combined with generosity for others to follow.

INDY READS

D

o good. read more. If these simple deeds appear on your resolutions list for 2021, Indy Reads may provide just the right mix of books and benevolence. According to the literacy-focused organization, one in six adults in Indiana alone reads below a fifth-grade level. Every purchase from Indy Reads goes toward a goal of accomplishing literacy for all. Through a community classroom approach, Indy Reads employs a team of coaches and instructors who help Indiana’s residents learn this basic skill in order to improve their overall quality of life. In July, the organization announced the addition of free High School Equivalency diploma classes. The bookstore arm of the nonprofit brings in a good deal of the funding for the program, in addition to monthly recurring and when-you-feel-compelled donations from the public. Indy Reads has been a Mass Ave staple for years, jam-packed with families and browsers almost every weekend. A move to a larger location in Fountain Square is on the horizon, but progress has been slow and the Mass Ave location closed to visitors since the onset of COVID-19. But don’t let that stop you from checking books off your list. Indy Reads is still ready to serve you with online orders that can be shipped to you. 1066 Virginia Ave., 317-384-1496, indyreads.org/bookstore 34

ontributing to charitable causes is as easy as raising a glass at Peace Water Winery. The main attraction at each of its three Indianapolis locations is a giving wall featuring eight different organizations and corresponding buckets. With each purchase, customers are given tokens to place in the bucket calling their name. At the end of the month, 50 percent of the profits gets distributed accordingly.

Buying wine is an interactive experience here,” says co-owner Scott Burton. “They think about which charity they prefer, and hopefully that’s a lasting effect. You know, you get a good feeling from giving, and they might come back to do it again.” How do the owners determine the rotating selection of charities? They don’t. Their eight children do. The Burton offspring, ages 18 to 32, have given love to organizations like Indy Reads, The Cathedral Kitchen, and Reins of Grace, among many others, over the years. Scott and his wife reverse-engineered Peace Water Winery into hangouts that leave you feeling good about your purchases. Before they even considered a winery, they developed a concept of a business that gives back. Once they had a mission, this model felt logical because “wine is communal.” And, well, they love it. If you share the Burtons’ sentiment, you will appreciate the bottles they bring to Indiana from their vineyards in California. At Peace Water, wine really is the gift that just keeps giving.
