Black is often a style safety net, but if it’s become your default choice in legwear, it’s time to consider some more interesting options. From bold, look-at-me colors to pairs of tights with just a hint of a pattern, there’s something to satisfy everyone’s sartorial preferences. Fashion stylist Danielle Smith, founder and president of Fresh Fettle, explains how to expand your hosiery comfort zone.

What shades of colored tights are most versatile? This year, there are going to be tons of colored tights—anything you want should be available. Try something different, like navy or mustard or burgundy. I think burgundy is a great choice because you can pair it with navy or with black. You can wear it during the day or at night. I think mustard is fun, too, especially if you have neutral colors on. It gives a burst of en-

ergy to your legs. It’s not a huge commitment—that’s why it’s fun for people to play up legs. It’s an easy way to be on trend.
How do you wear patterned tights with patterned clothing? First determine the scale. If you have a large-scale print on your legs, then you want to wear a smaller scale on your bottom, not the same size overall on your body. What most people want is to have a combination of both, so it kind of balances the look.
For those who are afraid to wear anything besides black, what would you suggest? If you just cannot give up the black tight at all, go for textured tights, like a pinstripe where the majority is black or a polkadot tight, just a small dot. You could get fishnet, metallic, or ombre. All of those are great options, even in black.

What do you recommend for tights/bottoms/shoe combinations? The traditional rule is your shoes should match your tights. Really nowadays you can wear any kind of shoe you want with your tights—whatever’s going to make your legs pop. One thing you could do easily is take a complementary color that’s close to your tights or a shade down or a shade up from your tights. It’s good for a monochromatic look.
What other tips can you share for wearing tights this season? I would suggest that people have fun with their legs and not worry about what shape they are. Colored and patterned tights look great. It’s really about having the confidence to go out and wear them, because you’re probably giving someone else the confidence to wear them. —Zina Kumok

The shop stocks specialty oils, foods, and spices, including a white-truffle salt that is “beyond amazing,” according to Schwartz. The Olive Mill is the only store in Indiana where he’s found it.
