at Kindred: The Bohéme Collective, a new shop in a residential-style Carmel space across the street from the Indiana Design Center. Owner Christie Wright welcomes customers into the airy space, offering flowy dresses, tunics, wide-leg jeans, and lacey bralettes befitting a boho queen. With several rooms, each filled with a carefully curated selection, Kindred exudes a fresh, sunny vibe. Macrame wall hangings, woven sweet-grass baskets, living plants, and crocheted blankets lend a homey backdrop to the displays of clothing hung on birch-branch racks. You’ll also find handmade shoes, baby items, vintage goods, candles, and home décor that speak to the soul. On-site salon services give you just one more reason to stick around and bask in the glow. “It was a long-term dream of mine to combine my love of hair and fashion to create a place filled with inspiration in every corner,” Wright says. owner Kelli Norwalk, Alyssa Norwalk grew up in Meridian-Kessler with retail in her blood. Now, she tends to her own mindful mix of local artisan-driven goods at her new Broad Ripple shop, Plenty Lifestyle. Sitting pretty at the intersection of 54th Street and the Monon Trail, the shop is the perfect place to browse while digesting Dancing Donuts or a delicious dinner from Diavola. These are gifts with a conscience, but that doesn’t mean they’re not also fun and funky. Sassy socks, magnets, and cards emblazoned with cheeky messages feel right at home amid the ArtMix ceramics made by disabled students, Ambre oils, Kyle Ragsdale paintings, and Unplug soy candles in the comfortable loftlike setting. The shop also carries a handful of furniture pieces, and while the selection may not be large, each piece is worth lingering over. ATHLETIC WEAR WITH A BACKGROUND THAT COVERS PUBLIC POLICY, MASSAGE THERAPY,

and competitive ballroom dancing, Love Your Body Yoga and Loungewear Boutique owner Lisa Berry feels she’s finally found her true calling. The north-side boutique combines Berry’s current passions—yoga and shopping—culminating in a personality-packed storefront. Browse fashions customers can take directly from down dog to date night. The location next to F3 Fitness and Dragonfly 360 Yoga seems strategically calculated, although the inventory goes above and beyond basic leggings and tanks. Shop brands like Spiritual Gangster, Alo, and Glyder—yoga fashions almost too pretty to sweat in—and feather-soft, black tie-appropriate attire that feels like pajamas. (Don’t miss the swoon-worthy shoe section.) Although the shop has been open since October 2015, an expansion in March of this year doubled the store’s size (and inventory), creating a brand-new experience. “We’re seeing more and more people who come to visit Indianapolis,” says Walter Knabe. A celebrated fine artist, he also owns a SoBro shop where he sells his designs printed on everything from leggings and iPhone cases to wallpaper. “During three-day weekends, we’ll see people who come visit from Chicago or Nashville—a lot more of that than I’ve seen in the past,” he says.

ARE YOU PLANNING A SHOPPING TRIP TO CINCINNATI, CHIcago, or another metropolitan area? Local tastemakers have a message for you: Stay home. Thanks to independent businesses and cultured consumers, Indianapolis is growing into its own shopping destination. The city’s shopping scene has changed dramatically in the last decade, and a handful of artists with one foot in the design world and one foot in the retail world have big ideas for where it should go next. 30

Love, has been in business since 2000. She splits her time between interior design projects and her retail shop where she sells décor like furniture, stunning area rugs, and sculptureesque lighting; but shoppers can also score quirky finds, like a menagerie of ceramics, homemade dog bowls, or designer office supplies. Although Indianapolis has a reputation for loving big box stores and many still flock to the familiar when outfitting their homes, more locals are taking that term to heart and choosing to frequent neighborhood shops like Haus Love. “I definitely see a push towards local, which makes me so happy,” Woodman says. “I’m all about community and supporting smaller businesses.” As the city and surrounding areas become more diverse, shoppers follow its lead, Knabe says. Transplants from other parts of the country bring new tastes to the shopping table. Millennials are willing to break out of a mold and buy something different. Many will spend a little extra money to buy something that has a unique flavor. Knabe has learned not to assume anything about the people who walk through his door. While teenagers love his leggings, some of his older customers buy them as well. “We’ve been selling them to women in their 60s and 70s, who are rocking them,” Knabe says. Neighborhoods with unique personalities, like Broad Ripple, Mass

Ave., and Fountain Square, encourage individuals to experiment and express their own fashion sense, says Truen Jaimes, co-owner of House of Fifth. Although he doesn’t have a brick-andmortar shop and sells his handcrafted leather bags through an E-boutique, as a local artist, he has a strong Indianapolis customer base. Hot spots, where people can develop unique styles, are growing, Jaimes says. “We still have a ways to go, but I think the food and art scenes are giving people places to go and things to do when they want to express their style more,” Jaimes says. “I see more people unapologetically experimenting and having fun with fashion.”

spired by fine art. Haus Love doesn’t just provide the hottest trends; it offers unique (often handmade) items homeowners won’t find elsewhere. “I look for passionate artists, not trends. I look for anything that speaks to me,” says Woodman. “I’d much rather pay for something that has a soul.” In Zionsville, Nikki Blaine Couture maintains a back room where pieces can be customized and stocks the latest trends before they hit the mainstream stores. Owner Nikki Blaine serves as a personal stylist, fashion designer, motivator, and cheerleader. Local retailers have their own favorite shopping spots. Jaimes of House of Fifth loves the style of 14 Districts in Carmel and Haus Love. He also admits having an addiction to Just Pop In for treats and gifts. “I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a trip to Silver in the City,” he adds. Knabe is excited about the growing shopping districts around town. Mass Ave. has solidified its role as a shopping favorite for downtown residents,

suburban explorers, and out-of-town visitors. SoBro, located just south of Broad Ripple, added three new stores this year. Fountain Square reinvented itself with restaurants and retail space. Shop owners also love the vintage choices for people on a budget or those who want to incorporate one-of-a-kind styles into their look. Blaine, who frequents The Toggery, a Broad Ripple consignment and resale shop, calls herself “The Toggery Queen.” Even if the style isn’t right, a piece might be repurposed into a Nikki Blaine Couture garment.

Indianapolis has many creative talents, and businesses would be wise to spotlight them, whether through pop-up shops or by selling brands and products in established shops, she says. “I always pay attention to bags that people already possess,” Resiak says. “If I see something that I can’t stop thinking about, I’ll make it with my twist on the design. I throw it in my shop as a one-of-a-kind and let the people tell me the pros and cons.” Knabe’s customers are often familiar with his artwork, and that allows him to use it on items they might not naturally consider. The aforementioned leggings have been a big hit. Knabe also sells wallpaper that packs a punch in any room. “I’m never sure how people are going to take things, but most of the time they really seem to embrace the best,” Knabe says. Local shop owners look forward to even more growth. They dream of 34

Owner Lori Warren opened the doors of the shop, named for her mother, two years ago and describes the inventory as “trail-to-table, mountain-to-meeting” goods that take shoppers through all their daily activities with comfortable ease. Say hi to Monty, a friendly yellow Labrador retriever and the shop’s official greeter, and then dig into the racks of Yeti, Patagonia, Kuhl, Chaco’s, and Kavu. Warren also sources many regional items and brands, including Joe’s Jerky and Kentucky-based Altera Alpaca.
