This elegant shop amasses an eclectic treasure trove of covetable statement pieces for every room, from glass bubble chandeliers and plush sofas to gorgeous wood headboards and swank settees. Owner Amanda Snider thoughtfully curates the one-of-a-kind inventory for her original Valparaiso store and its six-month-old Carmel outpost by scouring distribution warehouses, floor samples, and overstocks. Her regular buying trips to India and Indonesia lend a subtle Asian undercurrent to the overall collection. Owner Christie Wright welcomes customers into the airy space, offering flowy dresses, tunics, wide-leg jeans, and lacey bralettes befitting a boho queen. With several rooms, each filled with a carefully curated selection, Kindred exudes a fresh, sunny vibe. Macrame wall hangings, woven sweet-grass baskets, living plants, and crocheted blankets lend a homey backdrop to the displays of clothing hung on birch-branch racks. You’ll also find handmade shoes, baby items, vintage goods, candles, and home décor that speak to the soul. On-site salon services give you just one more reason to stick around and bask in the glow. “It was a long-term dream of mine to combine my love of hair and fashion to create a place filled with inspiration in every corner,” Wright says. GIFTS

AS THE DAUGHTER OF TARKINGTON TWEED–

owner Kelli Norwalk, Alyssa Norwalk grew up in Meridian-Kessler with retail in her blood. Now, she tends to her own mindful mix of local artisan-driven goods at her new Broad Ripple shop, Plenty Lifestyle. Sitting pretty at the intersection of 54th Street and the Monon Trail, the shop is the perfect place to browse while digesting Dancing Donuts or a delicious dinner from Diavola. These are gifts with a conscience, but that doesn’t mean they’re not also fun and funky. Sassy socks, magnets, and cards emblazoned with cheeky messages feel right at home amid the ArtMix ceramics made by disabled students, Ambre oils, Kyle Ragsdale paintings, and Unplug soy candles in the comfortable loftlike setting. The shop also carries a handful of furniture pieces, and while the selection may not be large, each piece is worth lingering over. A single mom of four, Norwalk also somehow finds time to give back to the community by hosting events, classes, and parties at the store; participating in international service trips; and donating to charitable local causes. 1051a E. 54th St., 317-426-2645, plentylifestyle.com

ATHLETIC WEAR WITH A BACKGROUND THAT COVERS PUBLIC POLICY, MASSAGE THERAPY,

and competitive ballroom dancing, Love Your Body Yoga and Loungewear Boutique owner Lisa Berry feels she’s finally found her true calling. The north-side boutique combines Berry’s current passions—yoga and shopping—culminating in a personality-packed storefront. Browse fashions customers can take directly from down dog to date night. The location next to F3 Fitness and Dragonfly 360 Yoga seems strategically calculated, although the inventory goes above and beyond basic leggings and tanks. Shop brands like Spiritual Gangster, Alo, and Glyder—yoga fashions almost too pretty to sweat in—and feather-soft, black tie-appropriate attire that feels like pajamas. (Don’t miss the swoon-worthy shoe section.) Although the shop has been open since October 2015, an expansion in March of this year doubled the store’s size (and inventory), creating a brand-new experience. Berry and her welcoming staff make it feel like you’re browsing a friend’s closet, complete with a large fitting area where you can kick your heels up on the couch and chat over coffee or wine while the kids wreak havoc in the playroom next door. 1726 E. 86th St., 317-663-8440, loveyourbodyboutique.com 28

Let’s Talk Shop INDY DESIGNERS AND RETAILERS DISH ON THEIR FAVORITE BOUTIQUES AND BIG DREAMS FOR THE HOOSIER SHOPPING SCENE. by Lori D. Roberts

ARE YOU PLANNING A SHOPPING TRIP TO CINCINNATI, CHIcago, or another metropolitan area? Local tastemakers have a message for you: Stay home. Thanks to independent businesses and cultured consumers, Indianapolis is growing into its own shopping destination. The city’s shopping scene has changed dramatically in the last decade, and a handful of artists with one foot in the design world and one foot in the retail world have big ideas for where it should go next. 30

Love, has been in business since 2000. She splits her time between interior design projects and her retail shop where she sells décor like furniture, stunning area rugs, and sculptureesque lighting; but shoppers can also score quirky finds, like a menagerie of ceramics, homemade dog bowls, or designer office supplies. Although Indianapolis has a reputation for loving big box stores and many still flock to the familiar when outfitting their homes, more locals are taking that term to heart and choosing to frequent neighborhood shops like Haus Love. “I definitely see a push towards local, which makes me so happy,” Woodman says. “I’m all about community and supporting smaller businesses.” As the city and surrounding areas become more diverse, shoppers follow its lead, Knabe says. Transplants from other parts of the country bring new tastes to the shopping table. Millennials are willing to break out of a mold and buy something different. Many will spend a little extra money to buy something that has a unique flavor. Knabe has learned not to assume anything about the people who walk through his door. While teenagers love his leggings, some of his older customers buy them as well. “We’ve been selling them to women in their 60s and 70s, who are rocking them,” Knabe says. Neighborhoods with unique personalities, like Broad Ripple, Mass

Although he doesn’t have a brick-andmortar shop and sells his handcrafted leather bags through an E-boutique, as a local artist, he has a strong Indianapolis customer base. Hot spots, where people can develop unique styles, are growing, Jaimes says. “We still have a ways to go, but I think the food and art scenes are giving people places to go and things to do when they want to express their style more,” Jaimes says. “I see more people unapologetically experimenting and having fun with fashion.”

spired by fine art. Haus Love doesn’t just provide the hottest trends; it offers unique (often handmade) items homeowners won’t find elsewhere. “I look for passionate artists, not trends. I look for anything that speaks to me,” says Woodman. “I’d much rather pay for something that has a soul.” In Zionsville, Nikki Blaine Couture maintains a back room where pieces can be customized and stocks the latest trends before they hit the mainstream stores. Owner Nikki Blaine serves as a personal stylist, fashion designer, motivator, and cheerleader. Local retailers have their own favorite shopping spots. Jaimes of House of Fifth loves the style of 14 Districts in Carmel and Haus Love. He also admits having an addiction to Just Pop In for treats and gifts. “I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a trip to Silver in the City,” he adds. Knabe is excited about the growing shopping districts around town. Mass Ave. has solidified its role as a shopping favorite for downtown residents,

suburban explorers, and out-of-town visitors. SoBro, located just south of Broad Ripple, added three new stores this year. Fountain Square reinvented itself with restaurants and retail space. Shop owners also love the vintage choices for people on a budget or those who want to incorporate one-of-a-kind styles into their look. Blaine, who frequents The Toggery, a Broad Ripple consignment and resale shop, calls herself “The Toggery Queen.” Even if the style isn’t right, a piece might be repurposed into a Nikki Blaine Couture garment.

The aforementioned leggings have been a big hit. BLOND GENIUS DENIM BAR

While youre there: Tool around B-town via the B-Line Trail, a multiuse paved path stretching three miles through downtown and beyond, on electric bikes from Pedego Bloomington. Sip on creative cocktails and droll over brunch options, such as bourbon mash and breakfast bread pudding at Cardinal Spirits. Enjoy a national act on a smalltown stage at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater, and make sure to grab a shot of the iconic Indiana sign for Instagram.

Far from the land of red Solo cups and tailgating attire, Blond Genius is nestled among brick townhomes and colorful lofts in the upscale Renwick Village community on Bloomington’s east side. Opening its doors just over a year ago, it’s one of the few places in town to snag designer brands, like Paige, 7 For All Mankind, and Splendid. Although the shop specializes in denim and stocks pairs for all shapes and sizes, don’t overlook the chunky sweaters and neutral basics. Even the tees are high-quality and too soft to pass up. 1541 S. Piazza Dr., 812-9550713, blondgenius.com IM SHOPS | 2017

Franklin chic home goods, cool threads, and cozy reads give this sleepy town a shot in the arm. by Ashley Shuler

THE MARSHMALLOW MONKEY Don’t be led astray by this vintage store’s name. There is nary a marshmallow in sight. Instead, you’ll find charming gifts (like seasonal pillows and yummyscented candles) sprinkled throughout the rustic-cool furniture and home goods. The shop’s eclectic mix of new and old oddities—in addition to the fresh flowers, interior design, restyled furniture, and baked goods they also offer—pays homage to Hoosier Boy Tomato, the greenhouse business started by co-owner Nicole Nicoloff’s grandfather. Buying a tea towel, cheeky pillow, beveled vase, or other distinctive novelty practically comes with a “where did you get that?” guarantee, since the store’s revolving inventory ensures something new every time you stop in. 41 W. P.F. HENDRICKS & COMPANY The atmosphere at P.F. Hendricks & Company, akin to outdoor-apparel and gear shops in much more rugged tourist destinations, will have you itching to plan your next trip to Colorado, the Alps, or even Everest. Owner Lori Warren opened the doors of the shop, named for her mother, two years ago and describes the inventory as “trail-to-table, mountain-to-meeting” goods that take shoppers through all their daily activities with comfortable ease. Say hi to Monty, a friendly yellow Labrador retriever and the shop’s official greeter, and then dig into the racks of Yeti, Patagonia, Kuhl, Chaco’s, and Kavu. Warren also sources many regional items and brands, including Joe’s Jerky and Kentucky-based Altera Alpaca. At the front of the store, colorful bags in an array of bright prints by Sari Bari draw the eye. Handmade from upcycled saris, they’re sewn by Bengali women whose names graces the tag on each piece. 101 N. Buckeye St., 765-450-6417, pfhendricks.com

JITTERBUG & CO. After a lengthy career in the beauty industry, Chantel Kebrdle launched her charming, retro-inspired gift shop on the courthouse square in 2015. Add a pop of color to your home with something from the always-rotating selection of bright home goods, including cookware and embroidered pillows, or browse the selection of books, greeting cards, and other assorted gifts. You might bump into Callie the cat while admiring the art posters that paper the green walls. A customer was so enamored with the prints, she bought one of each poster to copy the look in her dining room. Make sure to check out one of Kebrdle’s favorite lines, Opinel, a French knife-manufacturer that dates back

to 1890 and features finely crafted wooden handles. 119 W. Sycamore St., 765-8657048, jitterbugandco.com

AMERICAN DREAM HI FI Stepping into American Dream Hi Fi, you might think you’ve been magically transported back to Fountain Square. The record store focuses mostly on new and used vinyl. Their stock includes new releases by artists from Taylor Swift to Queens of the Stone Age, as well as vintage titles in a variety of genres and perennial classic-rock standards. “We will probably always have Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon,” says owner Mike Wilson. 109 E. KOKOMO TOYS & COLLECTIBLES Amber Jordan has been selling toys for nearly a decade, starting out of her own home. In 2014, she moved operations to downtown Kokomo’s

“Geek Street,” a block of stores that dabble in the nerd world. At Jordan’s shop, plush toys, action figures, Pop! Vinyls, and books line the rows of meticulously organized shelves and displays. The shop also purchases previously owned collectors’ items. Their stock includes characters and vehicles from the Star Wars series, Game of Thrones, The Avengers, and even A Christmas Story and Scooby Doo. The shop draws visitors from around the country; a guestbook by the register boasts pages and pages of visitors hailing from from Dallas to NYC. 111 E. Sycamore St., 765868-8151, kokomotoys.com

While youre there: Walk a few short blocks to the Historic Train Depot on N. Buckeye St., which houses Tin Man Brewing Co. and grab a bite at one of the restaurants right across the street. A

good night’s sleep is essential for a healthy and active lifestyle. In fact, experts claim it is just as important as eating right and exercising. Yet millions of people—of all ages—do not get enough sleep. Sleep fuels all our daily activities and helps ensure great mood, memory, metabolism and muscle response which let you perform better. Eugene Alletto, CEO of BEDGEAR, founded his business in 2009 after learning that his son wasn’t sleeping well due to bedding-related allergies. Quickly, he recognized a strong void in the marketplace for functional bedding products. “Given the athletic nature of the Indianapolis community, we are excited to launch our performance bedding brand and engage with consumers looking to find ways to maximize their performance,” says Alletto.

Continuing its mission to improve sleep recovery, BEDGEAR has joined forces with Kittle’s Furniture to bring Indianapolis an experiential “BEDGEAR Performance Sleep Shop” inside the Castleton store. The enhanced brand experience is designed to highlight an active lifestyle, while featuring an extensive assortment of BEDGEAR PERFORMANCE® bedding products, including pillows, sheets and mattress protectors. The personalized shopping experience pioneered by BEDGEAR includes interactive technology walls, a focus on customer engagement and true omnichannel environment. Kittle’s sleep associates will be on hand for one-on-one consultations to build each shopper’s personalized sleep system starting with BEDGEAR’s Pillow ID® product selector which uses a proprietary algorithm to determine the right pillow based on an individual’s sleep position, body type and mattress. BEDGEAR firmly believes that the path to PERFORMANCE® begins with better sleep—a sleep that can be achieved with the right “fit” of their products.
