WHENEVER I VISIT A FRIEND’S

home, we always tend to gravitate towards the kitchen—and not just because that’s where the pantry is. There may be a plush couch sitting a few feet away in the living room, but there’s something comforting and intimate about standing around a kitchen island, sipping drinks, and chatting about life. The designers in our story on kitchens, “Everything And the Kitchen Sink” (p. 52), understand that, and they’ve created beautiful, cozy spaces in a range of styles and aesthetics that do justice to this important area in the home. Of course, after you hire the perfect designer and create your tour-worthy house, then you have to actually live in it. Life gets chaotic, stuff accumulates, chores get put off, and suddenly your precisely arranged abode looks less like the set of a photo shoot and more like a tornado just blew through. Inspired by Marie Kondo and her less-is-more wisdom, we talked to local home organization pros about how to de-clutter your life and keep it that way. Hopefully, their tips (p. 44) can help you keep everything looking picture perfect. But we all know the real reason you picked up this magazine: to get a peak inside some of the most beautiful homes in the city. Well, you’re in luck. We’re excited to bring you a gorgeous historic house in Lockerbie Square (p. 34). Originally built in the late 1800s, it’s had more than a few famous visitors. (We’ll give you a hint. One was a Kennedy.) Now the owners work hard to keep its aging bones in good condition while both honoring its history and incorporating modern updates. And then on page 66, we take you inside a stunning travel-inspired Meridian Hills house that effortlessly fuses traditional formal styles, rustic African themes, and eclectic modern design. Whatever grabs your eye, we hope that inside these pages, you find exciting sources of inspiration along with the perfect people and resources to help turn that dream into a reality.

Show Me the Green IN THIS NORTHERN INDIANA LAKE HOME, DESIGNER GARY NANCE DEMONSTRATES HOW TO PULL OFF GREENERY, THIS YEAR’S PANTONE COLOR OF THE YEAR.

Y

YOU MAY HAVE BEEN SURPRISED WHEN PANtone declared Greenery the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year. It lacks the richness that has made emerald green so popular in recent years, but its yellowy-green hue is too sharp for people who favor soft, demure pastels. If you still

have your doubts, this home that incorporates the fresh shade will surely turn you green with envy. Although the home was designed back when the hot purple Radiant Orchid was all the rage, it just goes to show that sticking to what you love is sometimes better

than feeling the need to incorporate the hottest trends and current “it” colors. The homeowners’ favorite hue is green, so they chose to use a variety of shades, from forest to apple, in the nautical-themed home. Benjamin Moore’s Lafayette Green is the darker shade in the hallway that contrasts sharply with the bright white floors and railing, but the stars of the show— the cabinetry and window trim in the living room—are painted with Adam Green also by Benjamin Moore. “We did run into some difficulty trying to make it look right,” admits Gary Nance, the home’s designer. “The key was blending in the shades

(This page) Simple nautical elements like the lantern wall sconce and 1700s-inspired wrought-iron chandelier lend a more demure tone to the loud green background. (Opposite page) Rope chandeliers and exposed wood beams keep the room’s bright color from feeling juvenile.

of green and softening different colors with the architecture and wood flooring in mind.” Nance advises homeowners to draw inspiration from the structure, style, and décor of the room when working with bright and bold colors. It may be daunting, but with the right combination, you can pull anything off. n

Flower Power DISCOVER AND CARE FOR THE PERFECT MIX OF ANNUAL BLOOMS FOR ANY SPOT IN YOUR YARD OR HOUSE.

G

by Jussi Kent-Doolan

GARDENING USED TO BE RESERVED FOR COUNTRY FOLK. They were probably the only ones with enough dirt to do it. But ever since container gardening came along and turned over, well, a new

leaf, that changed for those who didn’t have enough space or time for gardening. And what’s not to love? Most containers can be moved if they’re not getting the right mixture of sun and shade. It also eliminates pesky problems like neighboring plants leaching away new fertilizer. But there are still a few rules you’ll need to follow. If you ask the green-thumb experts, they’ll say over-watering is the number one mistake first-time container gardeners make. Pro tip? Just poke a finger into the soil. If it’s moist and cool, there’s no need for more water. To make it even easier, four of the best local nurseries have assembled various planters for whatever space you need to fill. Instructions and tips are included for DIYers, and the pots are also available pre-arranged. There’s no longer any reason you can’t have your foliage and plant it, too.

Hot ’n’ Cold

These floral planters from Sundown Gardens will thrive wherever they get both sun and shade—like the front porch.

26

IM HOME | 2017

Mario Mirelez of Sundown Gardens designed a planter that calls for a good mix of sun and shade. The best spot for this selection is on a step or patio. The plants he chose are high in foliage but still infused with color. Backdrops like the coleus and heuchera give added volume and subtle colors, while the lysimachia trails down

OUTDOOR LIVING

the side of the planter for a beautiful cascading effect. Perennially popular blooms still make an appearance. Begonia and New Guinea impatiens take a front seat. For Mirelez, designing any planter is all about balance. “Anything that blooms has a period where it kind of takes a break,” explains Mirelez. “When the flowers aren’t present, you still have a dynamic and attractive display.” Water every other day, then water daily after May. $125. Sundown Gardens, 505 W. 186th St., Westfield, 317-846-0620, sundowngardens.com

Throwing Shade Sam Butler of Butler’s Flowers and Plants arranged a shade-only planter with a combination of towering heights and cascading varieties. Double impatiens can become very tall and expansive when they bloom. Combine those with the green-andorange coleus, while the cascading spring rye serves as a backdrop for the delicate Giant Snowflake bacopa. With this arrangement, caretaking is a breeze. Just pick dead blooms off the coleus, and make sure to water the planter every other day. Here’s a secret for healthy buds: Every time you water, feed the plants too. Just add a third of the prescribed solution to your feeder. According to Butler, it’s the secret of the trade. “People come to the nursery, take a look at the plants, and say, Why can’t I ever do that at home? It’s because we’re always feeding when we water them.” $25. Butler’s Flowers and Plants, 2401 W. Morris St., 317-638-3316

Since this selection from Butler’s Flowers and Plants works best in the shade, it won’t need as much water. Start with watering every other day, but check the soil first so you don’t drown it.

Inside the Box If your thumbs aren’t naturally green, this is about as lowmaintenance as it gets. Karen Thacker of Altum’s Horticultural Center and Landscape created an enclosed indoor terrarium including ferns, parlor palm, baby’s tears, and peperomia for an easy piece of contained greenery. Laying a foundation of gravel and activated charcoal at the bottom of a container elevates the soil for drainage purposes. After that, the best thing you can do for this planter is leave it alone. Just make sure to air the terrarium out every month or so. A couple tablespoons of water every couple months is more than enough. Sometimes it can go six months without water. “These plants do well in a closed terrarium and like the high humidity, but anything blooming does not,” says Thacker. $97. Altum’s Horticultural Center and Landscape, 11335 N. Michigan Rd., Zionsville, 317-733-4769, altums.com (Clockwise from top) Getting healthy plants from a good nursery is one of the best ways to ensure your terrarium thrives, like this one from Altum’s. They also provide succulents— another small hardy plant—and tools that make caring for your terrarium even easier

Soak Up the Sun Salsbery Brothers’ Holly Lindzy put together a hardy sun planter with a robust base of coleus and Dragon Wing begonia filled out with trailing licorice plant, orange zinnia, and pink petunias. A burst of cordyline red star takes center stage. The arrangement looks delicate, but it’s more than capable of withstanding the summer heat. According to Lindzy, this planter is about as resilient as it gets. “These plants are showy with minimal effort,” she says. “They withstand a missed day of watering and bounce back easily from any wilting.” But in a perfect world, you should make sure to water every other day and pinch off any petunia deadheads. The other plants are self-cleaning. It’s most certainly not a highmaintenance planter, but if you really want to knock your neighbors off their feet, Lindzy recommends fertilizing weekly for the most volume. $150. If These Walls Could Talk … ONE OF LOCKERBIE SQUARE’S MOST HISTORIC HOMES BOASTS AN INTRIGUING BACKSTORY. by Amy Lynch

(Top) The home was the site of childcare as Day Nursery in 1943. One can imagine the beating it took. (Bottom) Bob and Helen Small purchased it in 1971, and after nearly seven years of renovations, they had only just begun to return the home to its former glory.

Purple, Heather’s favorite color, inspired the decor in the formal parlor.

WHEN HEATHER AND JOHN WILLEY MOVED into their gabled Queen Anne-style home in 2013, they inherited a French-themed bathroom, an attic full of memorabilia, and a whole lot of Lockerbie history.

HISTORIC HOMES

According to the Lockerbie Square People’s Club, the two-and-a-halfstory Henry Runge House the Willeys now own was built in 1894, just a few doors down from James Whitcomb Riley’s. It remained a private residence for several decades until Day Nursery purchased the property, opening a childcare facility on site in 1927. It served the children of parents working downtown at the nearby Real Silk Hosiery Mills, Indianapolis Glove Company Branch, and other local companies. During the economically draining World War II years, the nursery cared for more than 100 children

each day (including a young Senator Richard Lugar), providing healthcare services and hot meals. On April 4, 1968, Robert F. Kennedy visited the nursery, shaking hands and tousling heads during his presidential campaign. In another star turn, the house has also made appearances in campaign ads for the late Governor Frank O’Bannon and for Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson, who now lives just down the street. 36

IM HOME | 2017

HISTORIC HOMES

The handsome property came into the Willeys’ possession in a rather serendipitous way. Heather worked for Bob Small, the home’s previous owner, during her first job out of college. They developed a close friendship over the years. “I had the pleasure of working for Bob after I graduated from Indiana University in 1996 and then joined the staff of Governor O’Bannon,” Heather said. “Both Bob and his wife, Helen, immediately became like extended family.” Small and several of his law school buddies were part of the group that was instrumental in a grassroots effort

(Clockwise from above) Heather loved the French-themed bathroom and changed almost nothing when they aquired it. The dining room, with original pocket doors, has a more country vibe. The tiled fireplace and Greek-key inlay on the floor are two exquisite features in the TV room.

that resurrected the once-struggling Lockerbie district in the early 1970s. Small secured a loan from a friend because no bank would fund it and bought the property from Day Nursery in 1971. At the time of purchase, the house was in a sad state and needed some serious TLC. Through painstaking renovation, much of it done personally by hand, the Smalls slowly and steadily brought the historic property 38

life and lived there happily for more than 40 years. Small later helped Heather purchase her own house in Lockerbie, where she lived for eight years. When Bob and Helen were ready to downsize to a smaller home just across the street, they passed the torch to Heather and John to keep their original house in the “family.” Now, with three dogs and an 11-year-old son named Carter in the mix, the Willeys are adding their own chapter to the story. “We liked the idea of having a larger family residence,” Heather said. “We had heard so many great stories about Bob and Helen’s kids growing 40

up in this home and wanted the same for Carter.” Because of the Smalls’ extensive renovation efforts, Heather and John didn’t need to do much structural work when they moved in, although they have changed up some of the decor to accommodate their own personal tastes. “We have added some of our own design touches to blend a mix of modern styles while keeping the original integrity of the home,” Heather explained. Many of the home’s original features have been lovingly maintained, including the gorgeous inlaid wood floors, a showy arched wood staircase

with a “secret” room tucked underneath, three fireplaces (two with the original brick still intact), and pocket doors in the formal living room and master suite. The front formal parlor space is Heather’s domain, currently painted a light shade of lilac with contemporary West Elm window treatments and a funky modern light fixture made from coconut shells. “John tolerates my eclectic tastes,” Heather said with a laugh. In the airy kitchen, a family heirloom corner cabinet filled with pig tchotchkes holds a place of honor—it was hand-carved by Bob’s grandfather from a single piece of walnut.

(Above) An original door with the Day Nursery dedication plaque still swings smoothly in the pantry. (Right) Also in the pantry, the Willeys picked up an antique locker and turned it into a spot where guests can store their liquor.

The Willeys are “holding” the item on a $1-a-year lease for Bob’s young grandson until he’s old enough to move it into his own house at some point down the road. Heather added a few elements from local stores to the main-level bathroom off the cozy family room, but chose to keep Helen’s original French theme basically as is. “We’re both Francophiles,” Heather said. “She made me some replacement curtains, and re-created the exact same bathroom in her new house across the street.” Formerly with damaged walls and a random toilet sitting in the corner, the refurbished pantry that doubles as a mudroom at the back of the house is one area the Willeys are proud to have tackled on their own. Now full of cookbooks and kitchen gadgets, the space boasts one of the home’s original doors with the Day Nursery dedication plaque still intact. Neighbors stop by so frequently, the Willeys refinished a storage locker they picked up at Midland Antique Mall to give visitors their own space for bottles of bourbon and wine. No strangers to entertaining, John and Heather started an annual Lockerbie block party three years ago, and they also host nearly 200 guests for the neighborhood’s annual Christmas shindig. In the summers, 42

their back porch and pool—a rarity in these downtown parts—see plenty of social activity. “We send out what we call the ‘Bat Signal’ via a group text, and 15 to 20 neighbors will show up toting coolers within 30 minutes,” Heather said. For the Willeys, the biggest challenge they face with their 100-yearold home is keeping up with the maintenance. “Since we moved in, we’ve spent time making additional significant upgrades,” Heather said. “We rebuilt

fireplaces, put on a new roof and new gutters, and have fully remodeled the laundry room and pantry.” Next up on the Willeys’ ever evolving to-do list? Repairing the original siding and painting the exterior a cool slate gray. “We love this home, and we want to ensure it’s always being perfected and restored,” Heather said. “The best way to build on the past and to restore and preserve a home like this is by ensuring that we maintain the integrity of the original elements.” n

IN 2014, MARIE KONDO

published her practical uncluttering handbook, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. Known for its extreme views on folding clothes, organizing items, and minimalizing your belongings, her KonMari method became the latest home trend, inspiring people to purge any possessions that didn’t bring them joy. Organizing is a huge industry, with shops like The Container Store and Bed Bath & Beyond offering myriad solutions for anything you want to store, display, or arrange. But despite these options and books like Kondo’s filling up bestseller lists, people still struggle to organize their belongings and keep them that way. Here’s what three local professional organizers had to say about creating your own tidy magic.

Detach Some pros believe the hardest part of uncluttering your life is figuring out what is worth keeping and what you can throw out with no regrets. Nothing we own is simple. There are memories attached to almost all our belongings, and that can make purging even more difficult. “Closets are very difficult because people tend to hold onto things for emotional reasons,” says Erin Hulse, 44

owner of Do Life Indy. “The same is true for attics and children’s rooms. Heirlooms, pictures, and especially children’s clothing and toys are representative of a positive time in people’s lives that they want to hold onto via these objects.” If you can’t bring yourself to get rid of something, Claire Dilts of Neat Method recommends finding appropriate storage solutions that will keep the items safe without them taking up space. If your mother-in-law gave you an antique vase for your wedding that doesn’t fit the rest of your decor, keep it in storage and bring it out when she visits. That’s part of the reason why some people hire professionals to assist them. It’s much easier for a thirdparty to tell you it’s time to get rid of your box of birthday cards from high school. An objective person can identify items worth saving and those that are time to get rid of. Dilts also suggests letting the items speak for themselves. For example, if you have a packed closet, try turning all the hangers the opposite way. After six months, discard any piece whose hanger is still hanging the wrong way, indicating that you haven’t worn it in a long time. Specific gear like ski pants or wedding dresses are obviously exempt from this rule, but it can apply to everything else. Dilts says people find an excuse to keep clothing, like planning to lose weight or needing it for a special occasion, even when they should suck it up and toss it.

Get Personal It’s easy to see a closet in Real Simple and think, I’d like my closet to look like that. But the only way to create an organizational system that works for you is to make it work around your life, not the other way around. Organizational systems often don’t stick because they’re not designed to be easily maintained. It’s 46

Even if a capsule closet like this one isn’t your goal, you can still use these methods to at least hone down your collection of clothes and make it more manageable.

one thing to have a beautiful filing system, but if it doesn’t make sense, you’re not likely to keep up with it. According to Claudia Appel, owner of Pink Elephant Home, logic should always beat aesthetics. To determine what’s most logical, do a run-through of your day. When do you get home? Where do you put the keys, the mail, your purse? “Step back and make a list of what 48

a typical day, week, and month look like, paying special attention to those tasks that overlap or repeat themselves,” Appel says. “Also, make a list of the pinch points or constant irritants that you battle. From there, you can customize a flow that works for you.” Another major problem that Appel encounters is people buying storage solutions first and then organizing existing items into those new

containers. Successful organizing involves getting rid of unnecessary belongings first, buying storage solutions for what remains, and immediately disposing of items you’ve nixed so they don’t just sit around, or worse, get rescued from your discard pile. Plus, if you do the purging first, you might find you don’t even need new boxes or folders, saving money and a trip to The Container Store.

nized, it’s time to fling open your closets and throw everything in the trash. But starting too quickly can lead to burnout. “Try to spend 30 minutes at the end of each day organizing a different area of the house,” says Hulse of Do Life Indy. “Each day can focus on a different room.” HIRE A PROFESSIONAL . There’s nothing wrong with needing outside help when it comes to organizing. Managing a home on top of working and raising children is stressful for any family. It’s important to find a compromise, she says, so everyone will help maintain the system and use the solutions you’ve created. “What is crucial is to be realistic about your expectations and goals and that those align with others’ in your family,” she says. STAY POSITI V E . Organizing is like dieting or starting an exercise plan. The first few weeks will be tough as you try to settle into a new routine and develop different habits. CLEAN SLATE adam gibson’s airy design uses sharp lines and uncluttered counters.

when kris and mike fruehwald decided it was time to update the kitchen in their traditional-style home north of Meridian-Kessler, Kris knew exactly what she wanted. “I’ve always been drawn to a minimalist, modern style,” she says. They turned to designer Adam Gibson, who agreed the kitchen was due for a makeover. “It was functional enough,” Gibson says of the former space, “but really run-of-the-mill, non-descript.” Gibson worked with Kris to pull together the sleek look the Fruehwalds desired, adding extra lighting to brighten up the space, choosing low-maintenance quartz countertops, and turning the large island into a show-stopper with waterfall edges that slide down to the original tongue-andgroove oak flooring. The kitchen’s focal point is undoubtedly the island, which provides the additional storage space Kris wanted. It features two deep drawers where oversized pots and pans can be stashed and an induction cooktop with a pop-up downdraft that lies flush when not in use. Even the electrical outlets are invisible, hidden as pop-ups in the countertops and beneath the cabinets. The Sub-Zero A mix of shaker and glass-front cabinets lend the space depth without adding clutter, pattern, or color. fridge and double ovens are typical high-end must-haves, but the dishwasher Kris wanted was a European model with specs that called for a six-inch toe kick (the height cabinets sit off the floor) instead of the standard four inches. The extra two inches might not seem like much, but Gibson says the additional space gives the kitchen a little more of the airy feeling he was going for, a win for both designer and homeowner. Across from the island, six windows—two above the sink and four behind the kitchen table—let natural light pour into the space, which also features a long line of top and bottom soft-close drawers and cabinets, chosen by Gibson and complemented by the marble mosaic tile backsplash, which Kris picked after poring over some 50-plus samples. Finally, in a move to ensure the streamlined space remains uncluttered by toasters, stand mixers, and the like, Gibson added two appliance garages on either side of the counter but eschewed the typical, clunky tambour roll-top, instead installing doors that lift up and slide back as easily as if they’d been buttered. 54

HIDDEN FEATURE Gibson embraced the challenge of creating a mimimalist kitchen—a space often cluttered with gadgets and tools—and incorporated small details, like the downdraft that rises up from the countertop when in use.

CHIP OFF THE OL’ BLOCK We talked to Chris Baker at Cathedral Granite and Marble, and she helped us narrow down the pros and cons of various countertop materials. MATERIAL

Granite

Marble

Quartz

Porcelain

Concrete

Laminate

EASY TO CLEAN?

Yes. It’s not very porous, so spills don’t soak in.

Don’t count on it. Marble is porous, and if you let a spill soak in, it’s not coming out.

Absolutely. Quartz is completely nonporous, so it’s easy to clean up anything that fosters bacteria.

Yes. It’s like cleaning a shower wall except on your kitchen counter.

Fairly. Just make sure you don’t scrub too hard or use abrasive materials that will wear off the seal.

Very. Laminate countertops are also nonporous, so wiping them down is all you’ll need to do.

LONG LASTING?

Yup. Granite is the most durable natural stone.

It will last a long time if you care for it properly.

Quartz can last a lifetime.

Very. Porcelain is an extremely strong material that lasts for a long time.

Sort of. If you care for them properly, they’ll last a long time.

They can last up to 20 years, though that’s not long compared to stone counters.

CUTTING BOARD NEEDED?

Yeah, if you don’t want to ruin your knifes. Otherwise, chop away. It doesn’t burn or scratch.

Definitely! Hard water, acidic foods, and alcohol can cause etching.

Probably. Although quartz is scratch-resistant, it’s not scratch-proof. There is a difference.

It’s not a bad idea. Porcelain is scratchresistant, but not scratchproof.

Yes. Concrete can scratch, and it will also dull your knives.

Have you not figured out by now that you should always use a cutting board no matter how durable your counter is?

RESISTS STAINS?

Oh yeah. It doesn’t stain, either.

No, although sealing the stone will help a bit.

Yes. Although not as heatand stainresistant as granite, quartz is still up there.

Yes. Porcelain is heatresistant and waterproof, so it resists stains.

Depending on the method used to make the countertop, some will be more stain- and heat-resistant than others.

Although they do stain, you can usually get stubborn marks out with the right household cleaner.

IS IT AFFORDABLE?

Granite can be expensive, but there are cheaper slabs available.

Depending on the stone, marble can be affordable to moderately expensive.

A wide selection of quartz is available in various price ranges.

Very. Porcelain is hard to beat if you’re looking for a cheap countertop.

Relatively. It’s not the cheapest, but also not the most expensive.

Man made materials are very affordable. (It’s because of this thing called supply and demand.)

EASY TO MAINTAIN?

Yup—unless you think applying a fresh seal every 10–15 years is difficult.

Kind of. The stone ages over time, developing a used look or patina.

Very! It doesn’t even need to be sealed.

Yes. There’s not a lot of maintenance needed over the years.

Eeeh. Depending on how tough you are on counters, you’ll need to reseal these suckers every few years.

Yup. Stains and marks are usually pretty easy to remove, plus they don’t require a seal.

VARIETY OF COLORS/ PATTERNS?

Definitely. Lots of colors are available, and each piece has a unique texture and pattern.

Marble offers a decent selection.

Yes, plus it has a more consistent color selection than natural stone. Interpretation? What you see in the store is what you get in your home.

For the most part. Although it has less options than granite or quartz, it comes in more varieties than marble or other manmade counters.

Definitely. Every time cement is pored, the color and natural blemishes vary. Your countertops will certainly be unique.

Although each piece won’t have the same unique pizzaz that granite offers, if you can name the pattern, you can probably find it.

sometimes an eye-popping coat of paint is all it takes to freshen a tired space, but this Carmel kitchen, bar, and adjacent sitting room called for more. “It was a complete overhaul,” designer Nate Slabaugh says of the renovation. “We blew out the whole first floor.” Taking the “go big or go home” approach, Slabaugh’s plan included adding a large partial wall to divide the casual sitting area off the kitchen from the more formal living room. “The owners love bold and modern,” says Slabaugh (who also favors contemporary aesthetics), and they allowed him to run with his ideas, including a few pet projects: He made the eat-in kitchen table which expands to seat 10-12, as well as the diagonal wine rack in the bar.

Although a very modern kitchen, the owners embraced a maximalist approach with bold cabinet fronts and funky patterns in the sitting area.

(Top) Wraparound shelving seamlessly merges the kitchen with the sitting area. (Bottom) The kitchen’s geometric shapes and warmand-cool color scheme mirror the sitting room’s rug and decor.

House guests are unlikely to have seen anything like the unique red gumwood–veneer covering both the kitchen and bar’s bottom cabinets, the island, and the dividing wall (which also features a hidden door for stereo equipment and a three-sided fireplace). The long sheets of veneer needed meticulous placement. With the grain front-and-center, Slabaugh was careful to match it across every drawer face, and the accuracy with which he laid the eyepopping pattern makes it a little difficult to tell just where one cabinet ends and another begins. There’s plenty of space with full-extension drawers and built-in amenities like a built-in spice drawer. Slabaugh created a sharp contrast between the dark grain’s warm tones and the rest of the kitchen’s sleek, modern features—glossy-acrylic and frosted-glass cabinets, stainless steel edges, and gray quartz countertops. The kitchen’s warm and cool color scheme, 3D-oval backsplash tiles, and funky pendant lights reflect the shapes and colors in the sitting area’s geometric rug. The bar ties the two rooms together with floating shelves that wrap around the corner between the two spaces. 58

KITCHEN REDUX in need of more space and better storage, these homeowners called on chateau kitchens and home remodeling.

last year, tara and randy birchfield partnered with Victoria Pelly of Chateau Kitchens to remodel the first floor of their home in Carmel. The kitchen had good bones but was expanded to include seating for their family of seven, a beverage center, and a large bar area. “This kitchen was purposely designed for entertaining,” Pelly says, noting that the former dining room was moved to make way for the bar, which includes counter seating and a cocktail table surrounded by four molded Eames–style leather chairs that Tara found at Castleton’s Urban Styles. The countertop surrounding the sink extends into the living room and affords extra seating, and an attached half-table maximizes the size of the large quartz-topped island. Ample space and unique organization features were top requirements in

this modern rustic kitchen. “I took a lot of inspiration from the modern farmhouse kitchens I saw on home shows,” says Tara, who studied architectural design in college. “I’d have an idea, and Victoria would take it and make it even better.” In addition to expanding the kitchen, Pelly suggested widening the pass-through space over the sink to offer a better view of the living room, adding to the wide-open feel Tara and Randy wanted for the kitchen. Tara’s favorite features are the two refrigerated crisper drawers built into the island—one for fruits and one for vegetables, each with separate thermostats. “I prep on that corner of the island and everything is right there,” she says of the drawers. The island also includes a built-in knife drawer with slide-out cutting boards, and spice drawers on either side of the stovetop offer arms-length convenience and help keep different-sized containers organized. But ask the Birchfield’s five children, ages 15 to 23, which spot in the kitchen is their favorite, and they’ll point to the beverage counter’s coffee bar and fridge stocked with drinks—a handy serve-yourself feature any busy family would appreciate. 62

as the owner of klein4design, Carmel Klein has spent more than a decade professionally designing living spaces for others. A year ago, she finally got the chance to design her own home from the ground up. Working with longtime friends and builders Kathy and Steven Sears, she designed a farmhouse that evokes memories of the time she spent at her grandparents’ farm in Southern Indiana. “I wanted to refer to my past,” Klein says of the house, which includes a large front porch and cheerful red barn-style garage. Another homage to the vibrant color is Klein’s kitchen, which features a counterto-ceiling backsplash of red subway tile and a bright red custom island that pops against the Carrera marble countertops and light gray cabinets. “I just thought, Have fun. Have something bright in your day,” Klein says. Though the kitchen makes a big impression, Klein notes it’s relatively small in comparison to the restaurant-grade kitchens many homeowners now request. However, the galley-style space is exactly what she wanted. “I love to cook, and I wanted to have as few steps as possible,” she says. “This is the most efficient design.” One noticeable absence? Aside from three floating corner shelves, there are no overhead cupboards for dishes and the like. But Klein isn’t lacking for storage. Hidden behind a pine sliding barn door is a mammoth-sized pantry, complete with an additional countertop for baking, floor-to-ceiling open shelving, outlets for small appliances, and even space for her dog kennel. The breakfast nook behind the island also offers ample storage beneath bench seating, and to the right of the pantry is another perfect accent. Sliding the barn door all the way open reveals a chalkboard wall that Klein might cover in hearts to celebrate her daughter’s recent wedding or use to announce the evening’s menu to dinner guests. n

COMEDIAN GEORGE CARLIN ONCE DESCRIBED

a house as “a pile of stuff with a cover over it,” but everyone knows a home is so much more than that. We use our homes to define ourselves and tell the world how we want to be perceived. We fill it with memories, things that bring us joy, and objects that tell the stories of our lives. That was the vibe this Meridian Hills family of four was hoping to achieve when they began planning their new living space. After living in a small Meridian Kessler home for several years, they were ready for a larger place where they could include traditional and transitional elements along with an open floor plan and plenty of practical areas where the family could interact. “Every room had to have a purpose and everything had to be kid-friendly,” one of the homeowners said.

T WARM AND IN VITING

The homeowners opted for a neutral color scheme and furniture with simple profiles to create a laid-back atmosphere.

THIS COUPLE chose Scott Campbell Custom Homes to create the home of their dreams after seeing his work on the house directly behind their lot and touring the 2015 Indianapolis Monthly Dream Home. They told him they needed a space that would grow with their two boys, ages 4 and 6, and one that could accommodate the large parties they enjoy hosting. They presented him with several pictures highlighting the elements they loved in hopes he could design something that was both traditional and timeless. “In the end, they got a great family home that entertains well and complements the eclectic blend of other home styles in the area,” Campbell said. Informality and intimacy were the keys. The couple jettisoned the idea of a formal living room, study, or office space off the entryway in favor of a lounge area that includes seating for two or three couples, a bar that resembles a bookcase, and a gallery wall that highlights some of the family’s favorite adventures over the years. “We love traveling to places that are off-the-beaten-path,” the homeowner says. “We were married in Kenya, and we have gone back several times so there is some of my own photography work as well as some special things we have brought back from our travels.” A few of those conversation pieces include the beaded tribal collar and masks displayed prominently above the bar in addition to the travel photographs incorporated into the gallery wall. Pillows covered in African-inspired prints prevent the leather couch from feeling too stuffy or formal, and natural wood, soft linen textures, and exposed metal elements give the room a bit of a chic-safari vibe. Across from the lounge is the formal dining room, the only space that feels like a separate entity from the rest of the first floor. The deep indigo wallpaper and matching ceiling cover set the tone, and a Forrest Formsma abstract painting with gold leaf lends some light to the heavy room. In the center, a show-stopping chandelier hangs over a simple round black dining table encircled by elegant wooden chairs. The chandelier is more than just a statement piece, though. The beads were con-

structed by women in Africa who have tested positive for HIV and need employment. Heidi Woodman of Haus Love is responsible for the chandelier as well as the interior design throughout most of the house. To create the vibe the homeowners wanted, she knew it was important to infuse the home with African design elements, and so she chose many of the lighting elements, furnishings, artwork, and even the grass cloth-inspired wallpaper in the powder room with that goal in mind. “I knew the chandelier was going to make a statement because the dining room is so dark and a little more closed off from the rest of the house, so I wanted to give it something special that would still reflect the family’s travels and what is important to them,” Woodman says.

The large, open kitchen looks into the living room and ensures that no one in the kitchen will feel disconnected from the rest of the group.

GATHERING SPACES

THE CENTRAL HUB of the house is the kitchen, dining area, and hearth room in which the family spends the majority of their time. The kitchen, designed by Kristen Okeley at Kitchens By Design, features the same neutral tones found throughout the rest of the home. A dark gray Viking refrigerator and matching hood stand out against the clean white cabinets and taupe tile backsplash. Standing behind the quartz-topped island (which features refrigerator drawers), the homeowners can see directly into the dining and sitting rooms. “I like to cook, but I didn’t want to miss out on the fun by being separated from everyone else. With a large open space, I can still interact with everyone even if I am in the kitchen,” the homeowner said, noting that one of her favorite items is the crushed ice machine tucked away in the pantry.

74

IM HOME | 2017

Between the four wood and rope-mesh bar chairs, the dining table that seats eight, and the hearth room’s cozy couch and tub chairs, there’s more than enough seating for everyone at large gatherings. A poured concrete fireplace, exposed beams, and the furniture’s variety of soft textures and simple profiles give the room a contemporary vibe while still feeling like a space where one could curl up with a good book. Two large bookcases store toys, games, and other amusements for their two active boys. “I wanted a living area that had clean lines—was contemporary and comfortable without being cluttered,” says one of the homeowners. “We were originally going to have canned lights going down the main hallway, but then we changed it to these glass globe pendants. My husband and I have a bet as to whether or not the boys break one in the first year.” In a nook behind the dining table, two wingback chairs overlook the backyard amenities. A grill area,

bar, dining table, and fire pit provide even more space for family and friends to relax. In the screened porch, an enormous elk head that the husband bagged on a trip to Colorado hangs over a fire feature. “He wanted to put it over the fireplace in the hearth room, but I didn’t think that was a good idea. So we compromised,” says the wife with a laugh. In the basement, dark wood, concrete countertops, and exposed metal give the entertaining space downstairs the vibe of an exclusive club. Three TVs hang behind the bar—perfect for watching multiple sports games at once. A sunken theater is filled with armchairs and a sectional from their last home, and the remaining space makes a great play area for young kids but will eventually hold a pool table or shuffleboard. “They are such a comfortable family,” says Okeley. “There is nothing fussy about them at all. They wanted to create a cohesive space with timeless elements so that was easy to work with.”

floor embraces a neutral minimalist design. The bedroom holds a simple four-poster canopy bed, midcentury modern nightstands, and little else. The bathroom also holds very little: separate his-andher vanities, a garden tub (often used by the boys), and a large shower space. Cream, gray, and rich browns dominate the space. The second story is the kids’ domain. While still filled with industrial midcentury modern furniture, the boys’ and guest rooms glow with a more playful vibe. In one room, a collection of colorful, paper mache animal heads hang above the dresser, and bookshelves filled with games, stuffed animals, and

toys surround a window seat. In the other room, framed finger paintings hang on the wall. “One of our son’s bedrooms is inspired by sea creatures while the other one features land animals. It has a fun geographic wallpaper that highlights the famous animals and landmarks from around the world,” the homeowner says. “Both have their own bathroom with a shower stall, and there is a secret passageway in the closets that connects one bedroom to another.” In addition to the bedrooms, the boys also have a playroom and craft room on the second floor. beanbag chairs, plenty of toy storage, and an indoor tree house—complete with fireman’s pole—are the main attraction. The homeowner says they had a similar type of play space in their old home and it was something they wanted to carry over into the new space. When the boys are older, the tree house can easily be removed and the room expanded into a teen lounge. “We’re very happy with how everything turned out,” the homeowner says. “We have plenty of space to showcase our life experiences and plenty of room to grow in the future.” n

ZMC Urban Homes Marketed by Flock Realty

317-634-4242

ZMC Urban Homes was founded by Patrick Stroup who has over 32 years of experience in the homebuilding business. Having built over 130 new homes in Fall Creek Place and surrounding neighborhoods, he understands that homebuilding is more than just assembling a stack of sticks and bricks, collecting a check, and handing over a set of keys. He knows you are not just purchasing a product but a process as well. Your experience throughout that process will determine your satisfaction with your new home as much as the quality and craftsmanship. We view your home as the result of a partnership between ZMC and you. We encourage you to make the custom changes that fit your lifestyle. One of our primary goals when we work with you is to ensure that the space, features, and rooms in your new home don’t go unused or under-used. We want to build the most livable customized home just for you. As in any partnership, there are responsibilities on both sides but we are there throughout to explain what needs to be done and what to expect. Most importantly, we listen. You will have a lot of choices to make when you build a new home but we will be there every step of the way to assist, advise, and ensure you feel confident in each of those decisions. Building a new home is one of the biggest financial and emotional investments you will make. It is exciting and maybe even a little scary at first but the rewards of realizing your dreams are well worth it. You can trust ZMC Urban Homes to help you get there.
