hen Dr. and Mrs. Steven Levine decided to remodel their master bathroom their biggest decision— what remodeler to use—was one many homeowners face. Ultimately, the Levines selected Jon Guy of Guy Corporation (GuyCo) because every one of his references said they’d choose him again. “To me that was the most important thing,” Niki Levine says. The Levines had remodeled nearly “every square inch” of their home and had never found a contractor they’d use twice—until Jon. Jon has 32 years in the business. YOU MAY HAVE A HARD TIME NOT drooling over the delicious recipes on page 50 crafted by local chefs who have a knack for knocking our socks off. The four-course meal was created specifically with grill-masters in mind, and I’m thinking I’ll have to make a special trip to my parents’ house where a grill is readily available. Although that specific cooking technique was never my dad’s forte, I still find myself nostalgic for the days my family would come in from a long afternoon of playing on the lake and stuff our faces with his tasty—albeit somewhat dry—burgers. Indiana summers were practically made for smoky meals and taking a dip in the nearest swimming hole, and I know I’m not the only one who thinks that. The owners of a gorgeous house on Geist (p. 76) wanted to take full advantage of their lakefront property. They worked with local designers to create a stunning, resort-like outdoor space that would be any lake-lover’s dream. Cozy lounge areas, a large outdoor kitchen, and a crystal clear pool overlook the water and surrounding neighborhood. And on page 58, we tour a lovely home in Pendleton tucked behind the trees and placed right on the edge of a small pond. Those homeowners, Mike and Lisa Baker, also know how to set up a small waterfront paradise. A picturesque pergola casts some shade on the deck that hangs over the pond—the perfect spot to dip your toes in the water and bask in a little alone time. And yet—even though we live in a state with over 1,000 natural and manmade lakes, there’s still not enough room for all of us to have some waterfront property. Good thing there are landscape designers like Bill Eagleson creating nature-inspired scenery. One of his recent projects, a backyard oasis in Carmel (p. 42), features a wild, splashing stream flowing past a sapphire pool that will make you forget you’re nowhere near the lake, which is all anyone needs—a place to take a dip, soak up the sun, and enjoy the summer.

MATT HEINCKER IS NOT AFRAID TO MIX THINGS UP IN HIS own home. The Carmel-based interior designer transformed his circa-1970s pad into a contemporary masterpiece, showcasing period pieces with classic modern furnishings. He pulls in a fun and bright 34

palette of color, proving that a coordinated design doesn’t have to resemble a 1990s wedding party. Floral prints can live with geometric patterns. Bold artwork can share the space with subtle accessories. Pricey pieces can coexist with castoffs—assuming the latter get a little Heincker love and inspiration. “It’s all about mixing super classic and super contemporary pieces,” says Heincker, who also pens a monthly “Modern Home” column in The Indianapolis Star. Let’s be honest. For some of us, mixing classic and contemporary would result in an uncoordinated mess resembling your first apartment with your roommate’s old couch, grandma’s antiques, and that one departmentstore table you splurged on. But Heincker understands the limits and the potential of such a plan, and the tactic creates a high-end yet comfortable vibe in the home he shares with his wife, Stephanie, 4-year-old son ,Levi, and 2-year-old daughter, Olivia.

“To mix color, you first need to decide if you’re cool or warm,” Heincker says. Let one or two pieces inspire the chosen hues. Heincker has an abstract print above his fireplace, a tiled design of watery blues and smoky grays interspersed with yellows, greens, and oranges. The color combination pops out around the room, like on the recovered pair of vintage wingback chairs in blue and green and the brown leather Chesterfield sofa with vibrant throw pillows. The same idea shaped Olivia’s room. Heincker started with colorful Cole & Son wallpaper in a digital butterfly print on one wall, inspiring the wall color, the artwork, and the fabric on the big girl bed’s headboard.

The master bedroom started out fairly traditional, but Heincker infused it with his style by adding antique furniture painted gold and a yellow settee from the ‘70s he didn’t even have to tweak.

Geometric area rugs work together and complement the other patterns in the room, like the chevron throw and the animal-print pillow. Hardwood floors of durable hand-scraped tuan offer a sturdy backdrop. “If you have a neutral foundation in a room, you can fearlessly mix prints,” Heincker says. Stephanie brought a green Turkish rug into the marriage, which found a home in the master bedroom. What could Heincker do with a dark green that had little in common with the soft hues of the lower level? He magnified it by painting the master bedroom walls a matching deep green. Everything else is black, white, or yellow, including the artwork, trim, and an unexpected punch from the sunny vintage loveseat. “The room can handle color because

everything else is neutral,” Heincker explains.

A set of 1960s cane-backed chairs Heincker saved from the trash—and fondly refers to as his “Golden Girl chairs”— surround the sleek dining table. “We were bringing my daughter home from the hospital, and I saw these chairs by the side of the road, and I had to get them,” Heincker recalls. “My wife was like, What are you doing?” Blending trash with treasure takes work, though. Heincker stripped down the chairs and spray-painted them with metallic lacquer. Then he added colorful fabric to the chair backs, resulting in a cheerful addition to the family space. 40

Stephanie’s Greek roots inspired the couple’s lively guest room. Heincker opted for a bright-yellow printed wallpaper, which casts a golden glow on the bed, covered in blues, creams,

and reds. Framed travel prints accent the ambience. A desk that used to belong to Stephanie’s grandfather now doubles as a vanity with a Moroccan mirror placed above it. Using a mix of high- and low-end items keeps Heincker’s home from looking like a thrift-store display. The living-room bookshelf combines white Jonathan Adler accessories with Target pieces. The sitting area works because the Chesterfield leather sofa sets the tone for a space that includes vintage chairs and a mid-century modern coffee table. There’s no need to settle for all traditional or all contemporary, Heincker says. Enjoy them both in the right combination. “Make sure the ratio is one to one,” Heincker says. “Have equal amounts of both in a room and watch it come to life.” n

FROM THE STREET, THE CARMEL HOME BLENDS IN WITH the neighborhood. The two-story abode on the burb’s east side is painted a quiet shade of green with a few leafy, mature trees in the front yard and a couple of Labrador retrievers trotting out to greet visitors.

Step into the backyard, though, and you might wonder if you’ve landed in the Pacific Northwest or rugged New England. The area looks nothing like a typical suburban landscape and more like the grounds of a lodge in New York. Water plays over craggy rocks, and a sapphire pool sits nestled among weathered sandstone and tall pines. “Water in the landscape adds a tremendous amount,” says Bill Eagleson, owner of Eagleson Landscape Company and designer of the area. “It can be as simple as a fountain. It can be a pond. Water is sensory—it’s a white noise. It can kill road noises or sounds you really don’t want. It gives birds and critters a source of water, too.”

No, you’re not in the mountains, but this idyllic backyard certainly feels that way after drawing its inspiration from nature.

As the homeowners added elements over the past six to seven years, the backyard slowly transformed into its current state. Natural elements are juxtaposed with orderly pavers and concrete surfaces around the pool and patio area. An outdoor kitchen area is a fully functional prep area for cooking and eating when the weather cooperates. Water flows freely in small but deliberately planned spaces, like the recirculating pond that separates the pool from the patio. Along the back, the pines shade a dry creek bed designed to become a flowing stream when rain comes or the home’s sump pump empties out. On drier days, a

Eagleson drew his inspiration from nature, designing areas that flow into and complement the next. “There’s a danger of creating a mess,” Eagleson says. “I’ve seen a lot of places that have a lot of beautiful elements, and each one has nothing to do with the other.” Eagleson met the homeowners back in 2009, when they were looking to extend a 12-foot by 12-foot deck to a patio with pavers and a fire pit. Eagleson designed the patio with concrete pavers in varying sizes and a curved border allowing the space to extend gracefully into the rest of the backyard. A patio set is perfect for outdoor dining, and the spacious area can 44

easily accommodate a crowd for a casual cocktail party. Next, Eagleson rebuilt the patio under an existing pergola just off the home and transformed that part of the yard from a generic deck into an outdoor kitchen and entertaining space. While the homeowners were trying to decide if they wanted a pool,

Eagleson suggested taking water in a different direction. He eyed the narrow space between the proposed pool and existing patio and recommended a pondless creek—a recirculating stream rolling along a riverbed of weathered sandstone pieces in varying shapes and sizes. A large, flat stone hides the water source and keeps

the water flowing among a curving colorful rock formation. Eagleson accented the pond with unique plants, like the Uncle Fogy pine with its twisted branches. The narrow space meant the creek had to be set down painstakingly, Eagleson recalls. Instead of laying out a liner and placing rocks, workers had to create the stream bit by bit, unrolling the liner a few feet each time and adding rocks as they carved out the creek in the home’s backyard. The project’s construction was like a puzzle, Eagleson says. “One thing I’ll tell people with water features is that I have no idea what it’s going to look like until I dig it up and find out what rocks I end up with,” Eagleson says. “The project evolves and comes together.” Eagleson loves to talk about nature, and he’s always looking for ideas while spending time in upstate New York, Northern Minnesota, or Southern Indiana. As a Purdue freshman, Eagleson quickly figured out he wasn’t going to be happy in a lab with a chemical engineering degree. He 46

talked to a counselor about his love for the outdoors and was encouraged to pursue landscape architecture. By combining those two passions, Eagleson seeks to recreate natural settings in his clients’ backyards. “We look at how nature has done her thing, and we try to emulate her,” Eagleson says.

These bucolic landscapes are more than just a pretty picture. In many cases, Eagleson is able to combine form and function—like the home’s dry creek bed that runs along the back of the lot. The rocky creek bed starts near the house and meanders through the backyard. In dry weather, it’s a picturesque path of pebbles and large

rocks of various sizes. Colorful plants and mulch surround the bed and provide contrast and texture. In rainy weather, the creek bed fills up with water from the home’s downspouts and sump pump, transforming into a bubbling stream that draws the water away from the home into a natural drainage pattern. 48

At the edge of the pool , a large, heavy piece of sandstone takes the place of a traditional diving board. The homeowners toyed with the idea of having a diving board, but they weren’t sure they wanted the necessary pool depth. Sandstone gives the kids a jumping-off spot while tying the pool to the rest of the backyard. Plus, there’s a history lesson in that sandstone. “That thickness was laid down by a flood or some other event that washed sand into the area, and over millions of years the pressure solidified it,” Eagleson explains. He hopes his clients have learned

to expect the extraordinary from him. As a tradition, Eagleson likes to leave behind a random rock—something that might be found in nature for no apparent reason. It’s intended as a conversation piece, a reminder that nature has its own order. Eagleson’s staff has taken it a step further, sometimes creating cairns like the stack of stones set near the pool and other similar markers. “If you’re out in nature, you’ll find rocks in weird places,” he says. “It’s just kind of a thing where people ask why, and we say, because. It gets people to interact with the space.” As for Eagleson, he’s open to trying something never done before. “I’m always looking [for new ideas],” Eagleson says. “Nature is a great teacher.” n

1 bunch spring bulb onions 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon salt

1 cup fresh peas 1 teaspoon lemon zest 3 mint sprigs (no stems), minced small pinch cayenne ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ cup olive oil

Peel and thinly slice the whites of the onions. Combine with the sugar and salt. Mix well and let stand for 30 minutes to an hour. Drain, but do not rinse. Set aside.

Blanch the peas in salted water until tender (about 1–2 minutes) and immediately shock in ice water. Drain well. In a small bowl, combine peas, lemon zest, mint, cayenne, and salt. Smash

Heat grill to medium-high. Rinse mushrooms very well. Drain and dry with a towel. Toss mushrooms in olive oil. If they are large enough, place directly on grill grate. If smaller, a grill pan is best. Cook until they start to give up a little moisture and soften. Remove to a bowl and season with salt, pepper, and a squeeze of lemon. ASSEMBLE ON BAGUETTE

1 baguette 1–2 tablespoons olive oil salt and pepper to taste ¼ pound Traders Point Creamery feta chopped herbs of your choice Reduce grill to medium heat. Slice baguette into quarter-inch pieces. Rub generously with olive oil and lightly sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill until they have a little crunch and color on the surface, but are not dried out inside. Some charred corners are fine. Remove and let cool slightly. Smear the grilled bread with the smashed peas, top with the spring onions, cooked morels, and feta. Garnish with chopped light herbs like parsley, tarragon, or arugula.

STEAK

2½ pounds flat-iron steak Generously season the steak with salt and pepper. Grill it on a hot grill to medium-rare or until its internal temperature reaches 120–125 degrees. (Due to the cut of the meat, the steak needs to be cooked medium-rare; anything under or over will be chewy.) Once cooked, remove from heat and let it rest for three minutes. Slice the steak, across the grain at a 25-degree angle. Reserve the slices of the steak. POMELO SALAD

Ryan Nelson, chef/owner at Late Harvest Kitchen and The North End BBQ, created this recipe after tasting a similar dish in Thailand years ago. It’s got a kick, but the pomelos balance the heat of the chiles. Nelson prefers the flavor and texture of the flat-iron cut, although you can use any steak you’d like.

In a medium bowl, combine the olive oil, shallot, garlic, fish sauce, soy sauce, lime juice, sugar, and Thai chili pepper. Stir until the sugar has dissolved. Place the slices of steak in the dressing, making sure the dressing covers the meat. Let stand for 20 minutes in the refrigerator. In a large bowl, combine the bok choy, peanuts, pomelo, mint, and cilantro. Add the marinated steak and dressing, and toss well. Arrange the salad on a large platter and serve immediately.

BLACK WALNUT–HERB PESTO

¼ cup black walnuts, toasted ½ bunch parsley leaves 3 sprigs tarragon leaves Dime-sized bundle of chives ½ cup sorrel, packed (arugula works, too)

4 tablespoons ice water 3 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon salt ½ cup canola oil Combine walnuts, parsley, tarragon, chives, sorrel, water, vinegar, and salt in

a food processor. Blend for six seconds, until herbs are rough chopped. Scrape down the sides of the bowl. With machine running, add oil in a steady stream. Taste and reserve until ready. BEETS

2 pounds yellow or candy-stripe beets 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon olive oil ¼ teaspoon salt Pre-heat grill to medium. Scrub the beets well—no need to peel them. Slice into disks half-inch thick. Toss the beets in honey, olive oil, and salt. Lay the beets directly on the grill grate. Allow to get slightly charred and caramelized before flipping and finishing (about 12–15 minutes.) You may need to reduce the heat or move off the coals to finish cooking. Set aside. ASPARAGUS

2 pounds asparagus 1 tablespoon olive oil ¼ teaspoon salt Adjust heat to medium-high. Trim the asparagus, and coat with olive oil and salt. Grill over medium-high heat until the color turns bright green and a little bit of the tip starts to char. Remove from heat while the spears still snap. ASSEMBLE WITH SHAVED RADISHES AND FROMAGE BLANC

Arrange beets on a platter, place asparagus on top, and drizzle pesto over the platter of grilled vegetables. Add radishes. Dot with cheese, crack some black pepper over the top, and serve.

Finish the night off with this juicy plate—created by Tinker Street’s Braedon Kellner—that combines sweet and savory flavors straight from Indiana’s fields.

GRILLED PEACHES

4 peaches, ripe 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper Heat the grill to the hottest setting. If using a charcoal grill, rake the coals into an even mound. Clean and oil the grill. Halve peaches, and brush the cut side with olive oil. Season with pepper. Place peaches on the hottest part of the grill, cut side down. Cook 3–4 minutes, turn peaches 45 degrees, and let cook another 3–4 minutes. Set aside. CORNBREAD PAIN PERDU

½ cup butter 2 3 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 cup buttermilk ½ teaspoon baking soda 1 cup cornmeal 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon tarragon, minced 3 eggs 3 egg yolks 2 cups cream 1 3 cup sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 3 tablespoons butter Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease an 8-inch square pan. In a saucepot, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Remove from heat and whisk in sugar. Add the eggs, and rapidly whisk until well incorporated. Stir in the buttermilk and baking soda.

Add the cornmeal, flour, salt, and tarragon. Stir until blended and only a few lumps remain. Transfer to baking pan. Bake 30–40 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let cool completely. Cut into 12 twoinch squares. In a small bowl, combine eggs, egg yolk, cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Whisk well to combine. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt butter until it begins to foam. Working carefully, coat the cornbread in the egg custard and cook each side for about one minute or until golden brown. Transfer to a plate lined with paper towel to absorb excess butter.

CHARRED-CORN PUREE

3 ears of corn, cleaned 2 teaspoons canola oil 1 cup cream 1 tablespoon butter 1 pinch salt Heat grill to medium-high. Rub the corn with canola oil. Cook for 25–30 minutes or until the corn is softened and charred on the outside. Set aside and let cool. Remove the corn from the cob, and in a saucepot combine the corn, cream, butter, and salt. Simmer over low heat for 20 minutes. Puree in a food processor until smooth.

SMOKED BERRIES

8 oz. hickory chips, soaked in water ½ pint blackberries ½ pint raspberries ½ pint strawberries, quartered Set up the grill for smoking, or place the hickory chips in an aluminum foil pouch and poke a few holes in the top. Place pouch over the fire. Smoke berries in a grill basket for 15 minutes, being careful not to cook them.

ASSEMBLE WITH FRESH TARRAGON LEAVES AND SHAGBARK HICKORY SYRUP

Spread a spoonful of the charredcorn puree on a plate. Place three cubes of the cornbread pain perdu on the puree. Add some of the smoked berries to the side of the cornbread. Cut the grilled peaches into thirds and arrange on the plate. Garnish the dish with a sprinkle of fresh tarragon leaves n and a drizzle of hickory syrup.

when mike and lisa baker began creating their dream

home on a secluded 11-acre piece of land in Pendleton, they longed to build a place that would meet their present and future needs. It had to be made from sustainable materials, have a universal design, and be filled with items that reflected the couple’s lifestyle and personal taste. “Our overall vision for the place was to create a non-traditional Indiana ranch house that had less square footage than you typically find in new construction, but plenty of interior and exterior living space,” Lisa says. “It was important for us to use a certified green builder, use high-end finishes, and to incorporate as many man-made materials and reclaimed items as possible.” The result is an abode that is a step above the rest and drop-dead gorgeous—just perfect for the podiatrist and mortician who live there.

step inside he house, tucked between the tree line and pond, is only accessible via a bridge, making the Baker home a hidden gem that’s invisible from the road and a bit disconnected from the surrounding world. It rises out of the land with the look of a rustic mountain lodge or a converted barn that may have been on the property for 100 years or more.

“We didn’t want the house to look like a new home at all,” Lisa says. “We wanted it to appear as though it has been here all along, and if you look closely, you can almost imagine where it has been added onto.” When you walk past the tranquil water features near the front door and into the foyer, it’s obvious that the home is unlike any other, especially considering the entryway features anatomical art, an antique embalm-

ing table, and a wax head Lisa made when she was a student in mortuary school. Adam Graef of now-defunct Rogue Decor helped furnish the home with repurposed items, and the embalming table was one of his cool finds. “There were some antique tools that came with it, which we framed and put in a shadow box above it,” Lisa says. “I love unique pieces, and although it wouldn’t be everyone’s style, given my line of work, it’s perfect.” The aesthetic really isn’t as creepy as it sounds. The main level of the home is a formal, open-concept space with lots of natural light, neutral colors, custom furniture, and beautiful light fixtures. The Bakers worked with Patrick Schmidt, FASID, of J. Baker Interiors to fashion an area that would balance the old with the new, the custom with the reclaimed, and the ordinary with the unique. “I never thought we could afford to have a designer on the project, but really, we couldn’t afford not to,” Lisa says. “Patrick saved us so much money. When he purchased something on our behalf, it was as if he was spending his own money. He had respect for our budget, and I really appreciated that.” He also took into consideration the items Lisa had already bought. Before and during the construction phase, the Bakers found items they wanted to use—like the set of vanities they got on sale at Restoration Hardware or the armoires Lisa found on Craigslist for the kitchen— and stored them in their barn until it was time to install them. Then Schmidt was able to find furnishings that complemented what the Bakers already had.

getting settled chmidt used three shades of white in the great room, dining room, and kitchen area that accented the natural light streaming through the large windows. He also brought in some roughhewn mantelpiece beams, as well as plenty of mirrors and shimmery velvet fabrics begging to be touched. The Bakers can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the water or watch TV in the large sitting area off the living room. “We really wanted the fabrics to tell the story in here, which is why we used a neutral background,” Schmidt says. “In addition to being all custom-made, the furniture is very comfortable and appropriate for this pet-friendly home.” Throughout the house, you’ll find areas where the Bakers made atypical design decisions that reflect their plans to age in place, or to incorporate reused and repurposed items. For instance, instead of installing a typical kitchen island with an attached breakfast bar, the couple opted to use a detached table that could be moved when entertaining and will serve them for years to come. “You can easily pull a wheelchair up to the table and still eat there,” Schmidt says. One of the boldest choices in the kitchen is the lack of upper cabinets. The Bakers installed an antique armoire to hold their microwave and other items and created storage in the island for their china and flatware. The decision to eliminate cabinets was partially due to their commitment to use as few building materials as possible, but it also keeps everything accessible in the future. “We were married on this property in 2008, and we don’t intend to leave it,” Lisa says. “Although there is a basement level, we were really committed to the universal design. Everything we could need is on this main level, so we won’t have to make big changes later.” Other fun features on the main level include the Dutch door off the mudroom and the storage shelf created from an old bowling alley floor. Just above it, a truck box is mounted on the wall for additional storage. Lisa says Graef found and repurposed both items. In addition, there is a forest-green powder room that boasts emerald-green geckos accented with black glaze on the ceiling, which sits adjacent to the couple’s office bearing a number of works by local artist Emma Overman. “She’s one of my favorite artists,” Lisa says. “The one in the middle titled Dearly Departed is what inspired me to go to mortuary school.”

lamps that sit against a backdrop of grays. Just past the bedroom the couple’s bathroom features his-and-her sinks, a walk-through shower with two heads, a linen armoire rather than a built-in closet, a laundry room, a coffin-shaped jewelry armoire handmade by Lisa’s father, pocket doors to give the illusion of extra space, and his-and-her closets. “One of my favorite pieces is this island that originally came from a Victoria’s Secret store,” Lisa says. “We found it at Bella Chic in Carmel, and the owner said that she had sold it several times, but everyone kept bringing it back because it didn’t fit through a traditional door. She told me the only way anyone could have it was if they were building a house, and I said, Well, I guess I can have it, because I’m building.” The couple nearly tossed it on the side of the road before they got it home because it was so awkward, and the heavy top is made of marble. In the end, the island was the first piece of furniture that went in with the framing. The house was literally built around it. That’s not the only unique feature in the Bakers’ closet. The space offers a secondary access point to the front of the house, so that if one person has to leave while the other is still in bed, he or she doesn’t have to make an extra trip through the bedroom. “I like the idea of being able to get up, take a shower, and get dressed without disturbing my husband,” Lisa says. “People die at all times of the day, so when I get the call, I have to go.”

eight feet under f the main level is the formal area of the home, life below stairs is considerably more casual. The basement is a great place to gather with friends for a movie or to watch the big game. Even with less formality, the Bakers’ style shines through. Guests can curl up with a drink on the leather furniture or convene around several bar tops and tables for conversation. Their basement delivers more color than the main level. In addition to the sage-green walls, a huge graphic mural in bold reds and golds hangs above a sleek Graef-designed entertainment center. The Bakers purchased the painting after the person who originally commissioned the piece failed to claim it. The main gathering space features a hidden projection screen, a TV, a fireplace, and full bar created by Graef. He made the cabinet doors from old shutters, and the wallpaper behind the counter looks so much like chrome it’s hard not to reach out and touch it. “He also did the bar top and found the cabinet that stands at the end of the hall in the basement,” says Lisa. “He is so creative and has amazing vision.” In the basement, you’ll also find a workout room, a half-bath with a full marble sink, a spare bedroom, and another bath with a reclaimed vanity and colorful bowl.

There is plenty of hidden spaces for storage and access to the outdoor patio and pool deck. When the weather is nice, the doors are open and piped-in music fills the house and grounds with sound. The patio contains even more entertaining areas, including a firepit, a gazebo by the lake where the couple was married, and a blackbottomed pool complete with a sun shelf and fountains. In order to round out the exterior vision of the property, the Bakers worked with the team at Mr. Landscape in Fortville. Lisa credits the firm for planning the pool, gazebo, water features, hardscapes, and the deciduous plants that require less watering, allowing them to remain true to their environmental commitment. “I can’t say enough about Chris Rafert and his team,” Lisa says. “Every time we thought for sure something couldn’t be done or were told something couldn’t be done, he would show us how we could do it. He gave us the things we wanted while saving our trees at the same time.” Schmidt thinks people will be surprised to see what the Bakers have created in Madison County, and he applauds their commitment to eco-responsibility. “This is not the kind of house you expect to see, but they are good stewards of the land and they got what they wanted,” he says. “They made every decision with purpose, and I think they are very happy with the end result.” n

may think the home looks like an alien ship landed in the middle of their neighborhood. Situated between a bright-blue, three-story Arts and Crafts home and a more demure forest-greenand-brick Prairie-style residence, Pete and Sarah Welsh’s narrow, rectangular abode is certainly unexpected. It pulls certain themes from the surrounding neighborhood—brick columns, a flat roof, the small front porch—but it is decidedly more contemporary than anything else on the block.

looking at homes together in 2012, Pete wanted something that captured the vibrant city vibe. His vision was a glass house featuring concrete and steel near downtown, and when they couldn’t find that, they decided to build their own. After spending more time searching for the architect that would turn their dream home into a reality, they found One 10 Studio, which worked as both architects and builders on the project, a convenience that made the whole process seamless but is a service One 10 rarely offers anymore. “Pete was from Chicago, and he was looking for something that was unique, maybe not to Chicago or the West Coast, but something that was unique to Indianapolis,” says Patrick Kestner, project manager and associate at One 10 Studio. “He wanted very contemporary urban design—something he was specifically looking for and we were specifically looking for.” But putting together a super-sleek, modern house wasn’t as simple as dreaming up the design and putting pen to paper. Before construction began, the plans had to be approved by multiple committees. Since Chatham Arch is a designated historic preservation district within the jurisdiction of the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission, they had to show the plans to the Chatham Arch Neighborhood Association twice and also get approval from the IHPC. “The first time went as you would probably imagine,” says Clete Kunce, principal and founder of One 10 Studio. “It was, Why doesn’t this look like a house? And so we went through that whole process.” “People still don’t think it’s a home,” Sarah says with a laugh. She says guests seem surprised the first time they visit, and taxi drivers pull up with a look of skepticism on their faces. But upon entering the home, you realize it is much more than sharp angles and steel beams.

courtyard featuring outdoor lounge chairs where Sarah likes to relax on warm summer days and an L-shaped plunge pool where Pete cools off after runs. The simple oasis is protected from ogling eyes by a six-foot wooden fence. Of course, the slats run horizontally instead of vertically like your typical fence. Nothing about this home is traditional. From the courtyard, you can see the living room, dining, and kitchen areas through industrial-grade glass walls, which were a unique challenge for the architects. “Pete wanted glass, steel, and concrete,” Kunce says. “And how do you get glass and light into that space without feeling like you’re in a fishbowl? That’s when I came up with that courtyard entry.” The glass keeps noise from the nearby interstate to a barely audible whisper, and once inside, the space feels much homier than you might expect from such a sleek exterior. Oak floors made from reclaimed barn wood, old Turkish rugs, and brick accents warm the space, and the couple’s friendly dogs, Guinness and Dylan, erase any nagging feeling that you’re in an architect’s conceptual dream.

is the center of the home, they decided to start there. After Sarah found and fell in love with their quartz countertop, they dragged it around for months picking out hardware, furniture, and cabinetry that matched. A large, minimalist print hangs adjacent to the dining table. “That’s a Robert Motherwell from his 1971 exhibit,” Pete says. “That was one of our splurges.” Art plays a prominent role in the home, and you can find it on almost every wall in the house. “When we started working on the interior, we said, Let’s make it like an art museum,” Sarah says. She graduated from Herron School of Art and Design with a BFA in drawing and design, and, for a time, worked as a freelance graphic designer. One wall of their living room—the “Herron Wall”—features pieces by artists that Sarah either studied with or learned from at the school: Kim Fuelling, Richard Emery Nickolson, Anne Nickolson, Matt Eickhoff, Peg Fierke, Erturk Mehmet, and Michael Vaughn. The rest of the home’s walls are peppered with a plethora of local artists and a few pieces from their travels. One of the last paintings local artist Susan Hodgin finished before she passed away in August 2014 hangs above their fireplace. A small Kate Oberreich painting of paper airplanes that Sarah commissioned to commemorate Pete reaching 1 million frequent flier miles hangs on a kitchen wall, and a Johnny McKee painting of their house was Pete’s gift to Sarah on their first anniversary. The master bedroom is simple and relaxing with just enough room for a king bed and more art. The sliding pocket door between the bedroom and bathroom underlines the emphasis on the architechts place on functionality. ironically, they couldn’t source any limestone from the state. And outside is another shower Pete likes to use during warmer seasons. “I don’t get it,” Sarah says with a laugh. “But a lot of men we show it to are like, Oh yeah! That’d be awesome!”

the striking visual zenith of the home. A glass wall eliminates the need for a railing, and the vaulted ceiling doesn’t hide the cool ash stairs as they ascend to the top floor. That’s where you’ll find a cozy loft area, the spare bedroom and bathroom, and a rooftop patio. A screened-in porch with a hammock is connected to the patio for rainy or buggy days. The patio’s spacious floor plan and uninhibited view of the skyline make it an ideal spot for summer parties. The privacy the space offers is hard to imagine for a home right on a busy intersection downtown. “It’s a surprisingly great house for entertaining people,” Sarah says. So great, in fact, that after the home was completed, they hosted a Buddhist houseblessing with more than 60 of their friends in attendance, and Pete and Sarah were actually married in their living room. The front of the home is narrow, and although the interior doesn’t immediately feel like a large home, it just keeps going and going. Smart design and planning made that possible, and Sarah and Pete have curated a cozy yet bright and airy space within the walls of their glass home. n “It’s an amazingly livable house,” Pete says.

Landscaping and outdoor living spaces are important features that can complement and complete a home’s interior when given the same love and care as the inside. Before the foundation is even laid, landscape artists and designers begin planning how to create an an exterior that not only matches the overall theme of the home but also seamlessly blends into the surroundings. For this lakefront property, the owners considered the outside plans just as important as the inside ones, and they recruited Chad Bruick, owner of Outdoor Environments Group, as soon as they started working on their dream home. When Bruick first saw the peninsula property on Geist Reservoir, he knew it was an interesting plot of land that would present some unique challenges, and he was more than ready to meet them. “One of the biggest differences between this lot and a traditional lake lot was the fact that it is truly a threedimensional site,” he says. “The water wraps around the property so there is not just one great view of the lake

but several, so we had to be conscientious in terms of our approach.” Bruick’s firm was brought on board very early in the development process so they could collaborate with designer Gary Nance, builder Scott Campbell, and the homeowners to create a cohesive outdoor environment that would flow well, look spectacular, and complement the natural settings. “The exterior planning took as much time, if not more, than the interior of the home,” the homeowner says. “The exterior design was inspired by the coastal regions, and our goal was to create a destination for family and friends to enjoy all of the amenities that lake living provides.”

variety of gatherings, offer plenty of amenities and recreational opportunities, and give the family a sense of solitude without obstructing the views of the lake. Bruick used a wide range of plant and hardscape material to create intimacy and privacy. He incorporated several climbing hydrangeas and Japanese white pine trees, as well as a mixture of natural stone and brick, creating forest-like landscaping around the pool and lounge deck. Whether the homeowners are enjoying coffee on the morning terrace, celebrating on the patio off the walkout basement, relaxing on the wraparound veranda, or having a party near the pool deck, they can take advantage of Geist’s scenic beauty without putting themselves on display. “The property is a very visible one, but in using a lot of different materials we were able to break up the various “rooms” of the outdoor living spaces and achieve a sense of intimacy throughout the site,” Bruick says.

The pool deck, dining nook, and alcove filled with comfy couches were ones the homeowners wanted to emphasize, and to help them create three comfortable but low-maintenance areas, they turned to Linda Mordoh and the team at Savvy Decor. The homeowner says that a lot of care and consideration went into both the furniture and fabrics to create a coastal feel that was modern yet classic. The family can gather around the gas firepit while relaxing on the U-shaped sofa, and a complementing L-shaped couch sits nearby on the veranda. A large dining table near the pool seats 10, and plenty of chairs and loveseats offer places to lounge during

a large family gathering or on a quiet evening at home. “Linda did a great job with these areas, and they have such a great feel to them,” Bruick says. “My favorite is the pool because it is centrally located to the tennis court and boat house. It has a great view and is perfect for soaking up the sun. I also love the covered fire feature, as well as the grill space that was created by Kristin Okeley at Kitchens by Design.” Because the homeowners love to grill and wanted to enjoy the fun of outdoor cooking all year long, they opted to install a two-grill cooking station near the interior kitchen so they could grill in any weather.

one vision on the way a home’s exterior looks, Bruick says a property like this one is meant to be experienced. In order to create an idyllic atmosphere that transitioned from the interior to the exterior, it was important for everyone to make purposeful decisions—to leave nothing to chance—and work from a singular vision. “The key to everything was to keep it clean and simple with a natural flow. So many people over-design, and that is a mistake,” Bruick says. “No matter where you go on this property, every outdoor space is designed with purpose and meant to create a cohesive circular flow around the house.” ■
