SELECTING THE PERFECT VENUE for a wedding can make or break the wedding experience for the bridal party and their guests. That’s why it’s often the number one decision couples make when planning their event. “The venue is a reflection of the couple and their style,” says Bryna O’Neill, rental events manager at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. “The venue itself is an indicator of what’s important to that couple.” Choosing the right venue can even alleviate some of the stress that’s par for the course on the big day. “You want a venue that makes you feel comfortable from the time you walk through the doors and a venue that understands what you want from your wedding weekend,” says
Jordan Allen, director of catering at the Indianapolis Marriott North. Fortunately, there are more wedding venues than ever before to select from— traditional churches, historic homes, elegant hotel settings, rustic barns, and cultural destinations. “It just depends on what the bride and groom want,” says Darinda Dragon, owner of Avon Wedding and Event Barn. “What picture do they have in their minds?”
{ THE TRADITIONAL ROUTE } Have you always pictured yourself in a beautiful wedding dress, walking down the aisle to meet your beloved at the altar, while the choir sings and organ music plays? Or does making an entrance look more like walking down an elegant flower-trimmed staircase in a historic home with an intimate
dinner party surrounded by antique furnishings? Either scenario can be very meaningful. Couples who opt for a more traditional type of ambience may face more restrictions and limitations when it comes to personalizing the décor. Not to mention, it can put a dent in your budget. “You can incorporate different elements in traditional venues, but it may cost a lot of money to do so,” O’Neill says.
{ THE HOTEL EXPERIENCE } Hotels are always a popular venue for weddings and receptions. With spacious rooms, they can accommodate large events. And you can go as glam as you want. “Having event space and sleeping rooms in one building is a huge convenience for weddings that have a lot of out-of-town guests,” Allen says. “And a hotel is generally able to offer a one-stop-shop event.” Hotels have everything—plenty of space options, plush amenities, accommodations for the disabled, A/V equipment, sound systems, and banquet space complete with tables, chairs, dinnerware, and linens. “Not having to find all the vendors to provide those items is a huge cost- and time-saver,” Allen says. Then there are the little things that can make a big difference. Events are one of hotels’s primary functions, so there’s always going to be more flexibility as to when you can access the space, when you can set up, and when you can start your event. A hotel space may, however, lack the intimacy or casual ambience some couples seek. “At a venue like the Avon Wedding and Event Barn, people can play outdoor games or walk to the bridge and watch the stream,” Dragon says. “You can’t do that at a hotel.

Whether it’s the ballpark, a museum, or a rustic barn, unique attractions are always popular with brides-and-grooms-to-be. They can be whimsical or ultra casual, and they often include various activities for guests to enjoy. The biggest drawback is that many attractions are public places. “Our set-up time at The Children’s Museum is not going to be as easy to work with as a banquet hall or a hotel ballroom,” O’Neill

Don’t Forget About These! No matter what type of venue you’re considering, here are some things you need to think about.

PARKING: Is ample, convenient parking available? Is it free or will your guests have to pay? CATERING: If you have a favorite caterer, better check the venue’s list of preferred caterers! The Avon Wedding and Event Barn works with 22 caterers. (Although for an additional fee, they’ll work with any caterer not on their list.) Many hotels and attractions, like the Children’s Museum, provide in-house catering. “We want to make the planning process as seamless as possible,” O’Neill says. The Children’s Museum catering team excels in making signature cocktails and culinary touches to complement the environment. Dinosaur cake topper, anyone? But it has also been known to recreate an old family recipe. BATHROOMS: This is especially important for outdoor events. Although guests take advantage of the beautiful outdoor setting to walk or play games, the Avon Wedding and Event Barn is equipped with convenient indoor bathrooms. ACCESSIBILITY: Will elderly guests or guests with disabilities be able to safely navigate your event? The Manor at the Children’s Museum, a historic home built in 1904, has an elevator and other modern amenities, for instance. The 100-year-old Avon Wedding and Event Barn features a drop-off entrance with a smooth concrete slab to make access easy for wheelchair-bound or mobility-challenged people. But not all historic venues are ADAaccessible. Venues that seat people on multiple levels can be a hassle for guests or catering staff. “It also cuts some of the people off from what’s taking place on the first floor,” Dragon says.

says. “That’s probably the biggest challenge.” For outdoor venues or ones that include outdoor activities, weather is a major factor. “When you look at a space it may look just fine because it’s a beautiful, sunny day,” Dragon says. “But you’ve got to think about the worst-case scenario.” The biggest plus about going with an attraction is that it’s so easy to implement a theme. Much of your work is already done. “In terms of décor and the ambience of the event, a lot of it is built-in,” O’Neill says. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enhance the Dinosphere, for example, because it already has fun mood lighting and sound effects.” The Avon Wedding and Event Barn has a nostalgic, casual feel, and Dragon has an entire room of rustic decorations and antiques couples can use for free if they like.
{ PICTURE PERFECT } Some venues are naturals when it comes to providing spectacular photo ops. Think the Chihuly Fireworks of Glass sculpture and the Carousel at The Children’s Museum or the bridge at the Avon Wedding and Event Barn. But a professional photographer can find the best spot at any venue and make any lighting situation work. “If, seeing it with your naked eye, you think the venue is beautiful, then it is going to photograph really well,” says Jen Clark, owner of Jen Clark Photography. “It doesn’t matter what style it is or if it’s indoors or outdoors. What matters is having the couple pick something that’s special to them and finding a good photographer who can work well in any environment.”

You’ll want to start looking at least a year in advance, especially if you want a date in June, September, or October—the most popular bridal months. First, decide on the type of venue you want, then select one from that short list. And even though it may seem like a daunting task, it probably won’t be as difficult as you think. “I think of it as shopping for a home,” says Darinda Dragon, owner of Avon Wedding and Event Barn. “You know as soon as you see it. You walk in and say ‘Oh, this is it!’”
