PROGRAM | Boutique Hotel TIMELINE | 5 weeks

PROCESS STUDIES As this project would be my first time working with a mixed-use building, it was important for me to understand ways in which public and private realms can be differentiated from the buildings form. During these midjourney studies, my prompt focused on a multistory hotel building in an urban landscape. I also specified the generatiions to be in the style of David Chipperfield, as I have always appreciated the way that his buildings uses are understandable even before stepping inside the space. The biggest takeaway from the generations was the glass storefront on the ground level, creating a warm and inviting feeling to the most public realm. (required in our project brief to hold a bakery, bookstore, and grab n' go cafe)

Glulam System After deciding on the massing of the hotel, the most defining aspect of the design was the ground level plaza that would be defined by a series of pilotis holding the above private hotel realm. From this, I finalized my design on a cross laminated timber system, that would then define the structure for the remaining building to be composed of mass timber beams and columns. The ground level system is constructed of strips of glulam woven together to create a take on a waffle slab structural form. The slab then utilizes the plasticity of Glulam to flow the woven slab directly into the column supporting it.

Building Skin After moving into the private realm and designing the schematic layout of the hotel, it was important to continue my findings from my earlier generative studies, and apply them to the facade of my building, differentiating the public ground level from the hotel zone. Doubling as a protective skin, and aesthetic feature, and continuing the organic nature of the glulam woven system, a series of accoya wood panels arranged in a voronoi grid finalized the visible concept of the new and organic forms taking over the old and structured. This would allow the hotel to act as a landmark for new building practices within the community.

PROGRAM | Abstract Investigation TIMELINE | 10 weeks

PROCESS STUDIES Through in-depth analysis of the futurist painting Speeding Automobiles Giacamo Balla, the artist's design choices began to portray themselves as more than abstract stylism, and rather the way that transparency and spatial reasoning is curated. e volendiilla From this analyis, the deployement of dynamic operatives such as fluctuating transparency conveying implicit directionality, were used to design a physical model through manipulation of fibonacci constrained members both in measurment and varying angle joints (5*, 8* etc). Through many takes and variations, a final physical model was constructed under the dynamic operative of delaminating forms creating an implicit space through an interpretive skin.

PROGRAM | Chess Club TIMELINE | 7 Weeks

PROCESS STUDIES As extra studies, two conceptual collages were made for reference when constructing the pavillion. The first, was a conceptual study model based on my interpretation of the books, "Teaching Architecture" and "Transparency", primarily written in regards to Swiss architect Bernhard Hoesli and his take on spatial theory.. The final model consisted of a cubic form illustrating the abstract thought of space within space and the removal of the human axis, as well as collaged portions of an essay that I wrote regarding my thoughts on the texts. The second study was a take on utilizing the fibonacci sequence to create a three dimensional grid to then create architectural forms. This was done because of a similar grid that we would be creating to form the initial massing of our chess pavillion.
